Whilst technical skills are essential in any career, soft skills which characterise one’s approach to people, work and life may ultimately be more important in determining one’s success. With rapid changes in the job market, it has become ever more important for people to possess soft and transferable skills that can be applied across different professions and careers. JA HK’s work readiness programs enable young people to understand the importance of developing their soft skills. They will also learn the trends and opportunities in the marketplace and practical job search tools and techniques. JA Career Dimensions Career planning starts from fostering understanding and interests from an early age. JA Career Dimensions enables students to understand the local/global career trends and opportunities in the high growth sectors, so that they can plan their education and career paths. I have learned that an entrepreneur requires a positive attitude to face challenges and setbacks. New business ideas can actually help solve social problems and change people’s lives. – Student 8 JA Success Skills Communication, collaboration, creative and critical thinking (4 C skills) are the most important 21st century skills. It is essential to equip young people with the financial knowledge they need to fully participate in the economy, as well as to enable them to make informed and wise life-changing decisions about their own financial futures. JA Personal Finance Maintaining responsible personal finances provides the foundation for a strong career and professional life. JA Personal Finance equips secondary students with the tools to make wise and responsible financial decisions throughout their careers and lives. Discussions and hands-on activities are led by business volunteers from whom students learn essential skills such as creating budgets, understanding different payment methods and credit options, and discovering the value of savings and investment. 5,156 Student Contact Hours 12 57 Schools 78 Business Volunteers “ A very good experience to share with students my financial knowledge and educate them on how to better manage their financials. - Business Volunteer ” JA More Than Money Spending and saving money responsibly starts from an early age. Through hands-on and engaging activities, students understand money basics, apply those skills to daily life, and recognise the significance of financial management in making informed life-decisions. 9,258 Student Contact Hours “ 1,543 Students 102 Business Volunteers I cannot agree more on the idea of instilling fundamental values into students when they are still a blank piece of paper. These core values are the basic concepts that regular school syllabus may not explicitly cover. It is also a great experience to lead a class of students in different grades, observe their dynamics and spend a relaxing Saturday morning or afternoon with your partner volunteer. – Business Volunteer ” JA Personal Spending 101 JA Personal Spending 101 introduces junior secondary students to the importance and benefits of adopting a positive attitude on personal finance and spending. Business volunteers lead groups of students in sessions on ways to spend money prudently and responsibly. In 2014/15, the program achieved 4,173 student contact hours. “ Children receive this essential knowledge in a fun and relaxing atmosphere. It could possibly be their first time in life to think about their dreams and life goals. The key is after the program, when they walk out of the school hall, they will have a different view on who they are, what they want to do and how they could make their dreams come true. – Business Volunteer ” 13 ALL-ROUND DEVELOPMENT Nurturing Skills for Whole Person Development The integrated programs encompass elements of work readiness, entrepreneurial thinking and financial literacy. They broaden the learning experiences of students outside the classroom and deepen their understanding of the economy as well as their sense of responsibility and belonging to the society. The learning is essential for the whole person development of each young person. JA Business Ethics Successful careers are built on sound ethical judgement and knowledge. JA Business Ethics exposes students to ethical challenges in the workplace. They learn how to successfully navigate these dilemmas and apply the lessons in real-life situations. In 2014/15, the program achieved 1,866 student contact hours. “ 14 A commitment to high standards of business conduct and ethics is a core aspect of ExxonMobil’s company culture. ExxonMobil Hong Kong Limited is proud to be the founding sponsor of JA Business Ethics Program since its launch in 2005 and has worked closely with JA HK to create learning opportunities for young people to develop positive values and ethical leadership. – ExxonMobil ” JA Our Series JA Our Series (Primary 1-6) is a fun-filled, activity-based curriculum designed to help children understand their roles as consumers, employees and citizens. The age-appropriate modules include “Ourselves”, “Our Families, “Our Community” and “Our City”. Through play, the program allows children to use their creativity while developing their cognitive and emotional strength. It enables children to engage and interact in the world around them at an early age. In 2014/15, the program achieved 8,564 student contact hours. “ The program materials are rich, comprehensive and well prepared, and give students a thorough idea of what they need to achieve in the lesson. – Teacher ” JA Leadership Seminars The seminars provide an interactive platform for senior secondary students to meet face-to-face with a business leader and to learn from his/her success stories and experiences. Through the active learning exercise, young people appreciate the value of entrepreneurship, financial literacy, career aspirations and positive life-wide values essential for their future success, and understand how the learning in school relates to the world of work. 6,423 Student Contact Hours 13 Schools 18 Speakers 15 SPECIAL EVENTS TEDxYouth@HongKong 2014 With the theme “To Be or Not To Be”, TEDxYouth@HongKong 2014 took ideas worth spreading to the youth of Hong Kong through a series of short, inspirational talks, performances, and engaging activities on technology, entertainment, design, arts, culture, entrepreneurship, and athletics.
