Building Strong in the Bakken Wanzek Construction is all over the Williston Basin in western North Dakota, moving equipment and materials and completing industrial and civil projects for regional and global customers. With the opening of the two new offices and additions to its workforce, Wanzek, a MasTec company, continues to be one of North Dakota’s largest heavy industrial contractor in the state. Wanzek’s commitment to work in the Bakken goes well beyond the norm for a construction firm, says Frank Rusich, senior vice president of the Industrial, Power, Oil & Gas Group. Rusich notes that Wanzek recently opened offices in Minot, N.D. and Houston, to better serve customers in western North Dakota. Wanzek was one of the first companies to build, equip and furnish an employee housing complex for its own and subcontractors’ workers. “We’re an energy construction company that is building stronger capabilities and capacities for all energydevelopment sectors,” Rusich said. “With the crossindustry experience of our people, an exemplary record for on-time delivery and an intense focus on safety, we’ve really been able to set Wanzek apart as a premier energy construction company and a preferred contractor.” nloading Transloading /U Nor th Dakota facilit y | Ross, Wanzek Projects Completed or Underway Peaking Units | Basin Electric Power Cooperative Wanzek is the EPC contractor for two Basin Electric projects scheduled to start in 2012. Both projects are located in North Dakota – the Pioneer Generation Station near Williston and the Lonesome Creek Station near Watford City. As the EPC contractor for both GE LM6000 45 megawatt peaking units, Wanzek is responsible for complete engineering (civil, electrical and mechanical) and the BOP work for all equipment and controls to support the plant. The projects are scheduled for completion in the spring of 2013. Gas Plant Expansion | Hess Corporation People are Wanzek’s real assets. All told, Wanzek has more than 700 direct-hire craft and staff people working on projects. To help retain those employees and attract the additional qualified workers, we constructed the 179 lot housing complex, near Tioga, N.D., each with a threebedroom mobile home, yard and parking space. In addition, there is a movie room, exercise and weight facilities and an on-site store for use by all the complex residents. Wanzek is completing early civil and outside boundary limits work for the expansion of Hess’s natural gas plant near Tioga, N.D. The work includes civil earthwork and construction/erection of pilings and foundations, structural steel erection and piping. The expansion will increase the plant’s daily capacity to 250 million cubic feet of natural gas. Plans call for the project to be completed in mid-2013. “Activity in the Bakken provides an excellent opportunity for Wanzek to put more than four decades of heavy industrial and civil construction experience to work in developing much-needed oil and gas supplies for the nation,” he said. “We have all the expertise that regional and global companies need to put themselves in a position to extract the resources, and with our local connections and dedication to safety, we can put our customers in a stronger position to succeed.” Transloading Facility | Plains LPG Services Wanzek did the civil/concrete, structural steel, equipment setting, process piping, electrical/instrumentation and commissioning for a truck-to-rail loadout facility near Ross, N.D. We also subcontracted and supervised work on the facility’s control system.
