LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year at Imagine West Melbourne.
We are a tight-knit community that comes together for a common
purpose, to educate our children in mind and character. Our measures
of Academic Growth and Positive Character Development are
both central to our mission and vision. Our belief in School
Development and Economic Sustainability is tied directly to
Parent Choice. You are our partners in this journey and without you,
we cease to exist. And finally, our Shared Values of Integrity, Justice,
and Fun unite us throughout the Imagine family. With integrity, we
look to find “wholeness” both as individuals and as a community; we
strive to look beyond our narrow job descriptions and focus on the
good of the whole organization and community. With justice we
believe that every child and adult needs to be viewed as an individual
and served in that manner. And finally with Fun we believe that “Joy at
Work” only comes from having the power to make a difference and
affect changes in the arenas that mean the most to us at our jobs.
With Fun comes the need to seek advice from all stakeholders. It is
definitely a bottom-up leadership organization and as we improve our
understanding of servant leadership, leadership opportunities will
continue to flow to the teachers and staff and further to students.
We look forward to meeting all of you this year and speaking with you
about your child(ren). We sincerely hope that you will find your niche
in our school and will discover a way that you can best get involved.
Our requested 20 hours per family of service can be met in a variety of
ways, from attending Board meetings, to volunteering in the classroom
or office, to joining a task force, to sharing a talent, to providing
treasure. We hope to see you often!
Please know that the leadership team is more than happy to speak to
you at any time. We can be reached via our email addresses or at the
school number 321-768-6200. I encourage you to bookmark our
website and regularly check the teacher pages of your child(ren)’s
teachers. Each are a source of a great deal of information.
In Partnership,
Brian DeGonzague, School Leader

MISSION AND VISION
IMAGINE WEST MELBOURNE’S VISION
STATEMENT
Our vision as an achievement-focused learning community is to
inspire a passion for learning in which all students achieve lifelong success.
IMAGINE WEST MELBOURNE’S MISSION STATEMENT
Imagine West Melbourne partners with parents to provide a rigorous learning experience
with a focus on academic growth in a safe environment that emphasizes the values of
community, student voice, and high expectations to give students a love of learning that
will stay with them through school, university and beyond.
IMAGINE WEST MELBOURNE CHARACTER MISSION
STATEMENT
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne is committed to the goals of developing positive
character and providing opportunities to lead and serve by teaching, promoting, and
demonstrating the values of Self-Discipline, Respect, Trustworthiness, Perseverance,
Caring, Responsibility, Citizenship, as well as our shared values of Justice, Integrity, and
Fun.
IMAGINE WEST MELBOURNE’S PARENT INVOLVEMENT
MISSION STATEMENT
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne believes parents are the first educators and it is our
job to assist them. We will provide parents with the knowledge and tools necessary to help
their child achieve success.
IMAGINE WEST MELBOURNE’S PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS
Goals for Imagine Schools at West Melbourne align with the Brevard Public School
District’s strategic plan and the state of Florida’s academic and nonacademic priorities, as
well as the mission and philosophy of Imagine Schools.
Six Measures of Excellence - Imagine West Melbourne’s decision making is guided
by the following six measures of excellence. These measures of excellence define who
we are and differentiate us from other charter schools. These six measures of excellence
shape the culture of the school and form the framework to shape school goals and
priorities. These six measures assure the continued operation of a quality school that
serves to help parents educate their children. Our six measures of excellence are:
1. Shared Values of Integrity, Justice and Fun
2. Parent/Guardian Choice
3. Academic Growth
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne

4. Positive Character Development
5. Economic Sustainability
6. School Development
Content, Character, and Community - What makes Imagine West Melbourne
distinctive from other schools is the way in which we are pursuing our core commitments to
content, character, and community. In all that we do, we desire to be a place that is rooted
in teaching solid content, directed toward the formation of sound character, and
characterized by a strong sense of community.
Content - Cambridge Primary is a world-class education program, typically for learners
aged 5 to 11 years. It engages learners in an active and creative learning journey, building
knowledge and skills in English, mathematics and science. Cambridge Primary gives
learners an excellent foundation for secondary education.
Student’s needs as a learner are at the heart of our approach to education. Our programs
and qualifications aim to give students a love of learning that will stay with them through
school, university and beyond.
We develop learners who are:
Confident in working with information and ideas – their own and those of others
Responsible for themselves, responsive to and respectful of others
Innovative and equipped for new and future challenges
Engaged intellectually and socially, ready to make a difference.
Character - At Imagine West Melbourne, we are committed to guiding children towards
becoming people of character. In order to be people of character, children must first know
what that means and what is expected of them. This involves helping them do the things
that cultivate character-building traits, which we identify as integrity, justice, and fun. After
knowing and doing the things that teach character, students gradually learn to be people of
character. In short, we are guided by a framework for character development that requires
children to:
 Know what is expected of them
 Do the things that reinforce the principles of integrity, justice, and fun; and ultimately
 Be people of sound character.
Community - One of Imagine West Melbourne’s primary commitments is building a
strong community that will positively shape the hearts and minds of students. Community
is an essential part of school life, and it is our hope that through relationships among and
between the school, families, and the greater community, the goal of teaching children to
be people of character will be reinforced. As we collectively pursue our mission and vision,
we commit to:
 Helping our students know that they are members of a particular community in a
particular place, and that they are accountable to that community;
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne
6




Involving ourselves in the local community, as well as inviting our local community
members to involve themselves in our work;
Recognizing the strengths rather than the limitations of every member of our
community, and modeling relationships of mutual respect;
Developing continuity between home and school, and respecting cultural and
educational differences that may exist; and
Treating parents as full partners and active participants in the educational process.
GENERAL SCHOOL INFORMATION
PARENT INVOLVEMENT AND COMMUNICATION
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne believes that parental partnership and
involvement in their child(ren)’s education strongly impacts students’ academic
achievement. The school’s goal is to involve each parent as a full partner in t he
educational program. The school will strive to have a high level of involvement of parents
and community members as decision makers, providing instructional support to students,
and as volunteers in a variety of additional functions. It is also the goal of Imagine West
Melbourne to have a high degree of parent satisfaction with the education their child is
receiving and the operations of the school. Each family will sign the Parent Covenant
committing to 20 hours of volunteer time per year per family.
Visitors – We want parents to be partners in their child(ren)’s education and in our
school. Parents are welcome to visit in classrooms and volunteer in a variety of ways
throughout the school. For any classroom visit, please give the teacher 24 hours
advance notice to ensure that the educational process will not be disrupted by the
presence of the adults in the classroom. In order to maintain a safe school
environment, the office must know who is entering the school and for what purpose.
Parents must sign in at the office whenever they are in the building. Visitation by other
students, including friends and relatives, is not permitted without prior permission. A visitor
pass will be issued by the office to any parent or approved visitor to Imagine West
Melbourne. A driver’s license or other form of Government issued ID is required the first
time any visitor is issued a pass. Should the frequency of visits or behavior during visits
disrupt the classroom, the school administration or designee may restrict visitation.
Teacher Pages - The goal of the Imagine Teacher Pages on Edline is to communicate
the academic goals for the week, listing of ways parents can support at home, as well as
events for the week. The Teacher Pages will be updated on a consistent basis. If your
family does not have internet access, please let the teacher know to see about alternative
means of communication. In addition, a monthly school newsletter will be sent
electronically focusing on school news and events.
CONFLICT RESOLUTION
As parents, students, and school personnel, we need to commit ourselves to seeking
reconciliation with others when a wrong, perceived or real, has occurred. Specifically, if a
parent has a concern about a class or teacher, the parent should meet with the teacher
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne

first. If necessary, a conference with the parent, teacher, and administration can be
scheduled. If a parent/student has a conflict with another parent/student, the parents and
students should meet to resolve any differences or concerns. In general, parents and
students are expected to follow the following procedure in resolving conflicts.
1. Meet with and try to solve the problem with the teacher directly.
2. If no satisfactory resolution is reached, ask to meet with the School
Administration. The teacher may be a part of the meeting.
3. If no satisfactory resolution is reached, ask to meet with the Regional Director.
Imagine West Melbourne’s Parent Liaison is Melissa Koretsky. Ms. Koretsky is your
representative to facilitate parental involvement, provide access to information, assist
parents and others with questions and concerns, and resolve disputes.

Drop Off - Students should not be dropped off before 7:30 A.M., as supervision is not
provided prior to that time. Students will be allowed to enter the building to go to breakfast
at 7:30 A.M. Students need to be in their classroom seats by 8:00 A.M. to avoid being
Tardy.
Pick Up - Students are dismissed at 3:00 and should be picked up promptly at the end of
the day. (Please note, although dismissal is at 3:00, students will not be outside in their
pick up location until sometime after 3:00.) Students will wait in their designated area until
called to the carpool lanes where a staff member will assist them into their vehicle. Cars
must have an identification tag that indicates the students who are allowed to go home in
that vehicle. Parents or other adults who wish to park and walk to pick up their students
must also have the appropriate identification that shows that they are allowed to pick up
the child(ren). Students who walk home must have a signed permission form on file before
being allowed to do so. Parents need to arrange inclement weather plans with their
child(ren) prior to the occurrence of such an event. A change in pick up plans must be
documented in writing. Students not picked up by 3:30pm (1:30 pm on early release
days) will be sent to after care and parents will be charged for that session of after
care.
Bicycles and Other Forms of Student Transportation - Bicycles and scooters
may be ridden to school by students as long as the student is proficient enough riding the
bike to be safe. They must walk the bike or scooter once they enter school grounds and
they must be parked in the racks provided and are not to be in the parking lot at any time
during school hours. Once bikes are in the racks, they are not to be removed until the
student is ready to go home. Each student is responsible for locking her/his bike. For
safety and liability reasons, in-line/roller skates, and shoe skates are not allowed on
campus at any time, including when school is not in session. Helmets must be worn
when utilizing bicycles.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Regular, daily attendance in class is extremely important to the educational process. In
accordance with state law, all students are expected to attend school for all days of the
established school calendar.
Parents must notify the school office via phone or email to report absent students on the
day of the absence. A doctor or health care provider note should be provided when
possible. Although students may not be required to make up all work assigned during an
illness, they will be accountable for its content when tested. Parents/students should
request work missed via email on the date of the absence. Please allow 24 hours from the
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne
9
receipt of the request before the work will be available. Work that is missed as a result of
an unexcused absence may be turned in for partial credit.
Teachers, and the School Administration or Designee when appropriate, may meet with
the parent to develop an attendance plan if frequent absences occur. If a student is
absent for thirteen (13) days within the school year, they may be referred to the
District truancy officer. If a student is absent for eighteen (18) days within the
school year or nine (9) days within a semester, they may be retained in their current
grade for the following school year.
PREARRANGED ABSENCE
When family need/activity results in a student's absence, advance written permission must
be sought (there is a Pre-arranged Absence form at the end of this handbook). Daily
assignments may be excused at the discretion of the teacher. However, students will
always be accountable for the material taught during their absence. They should turn in
missed work the day they return to school. Please notify the teacher to get the work the
student will miss. Please understand that notification of less than a week will likely hinder
the ability to provide necessary make-up work.
TARDIES
Punctuality is of great importance at Imagine West Melbourne. EVERY MINUTE
MATTERS. Tardiness creates a distraction for all students and interferes with student
achievement. A student is considered tardy if he or she is not in the classroom at the
designated time. Excessive tardiness shall result in a conference to include a parent or
guardian, the student, and the School Administration or Designee. A plan will be
developed and expected to be followed.
If a child arrives at school after 9:00 A.M., the child must be signed in at the office by
an adult and is deemed ½ day absent. A tardy is only excused when an appointment slip
(i.e. a doctor or dentist note) is provided to the front office. Carpooling arrangements
must be made to ensure students arrive at school with adequate time to be prepared for
their first activity.
If a student must leave before the bell rings at 3:00 P.M., they must be signed out at the
front office. Parents need to notify the teacher in advance -via email or a physical note - so
that the student can be waiting in the office and their class is not interrupted. Students
leaving prior to 2:00 pm will be deemed ½ day absent, while students leaving within the
last hour of the school day are charged with a tardy. Unless there is an extenuating
circumstance, we request that parents/guardians do not pick up their child(ren) after
2:30pm.
Three (3) tardies will equal one day unexcused absence per semester.
SCHOOL LUNCH
Our school lunch program is funded through the National School Lunch
Program. Therefore, all students receive a free breakfast and lunch.
Imagine West Melbourne recognizes that students do best in school if
they have eaten a nutritious and balanced meal.

Shared Values - Justice
“Fair is not always equal” Everyone’s Different, Everyone’s Unique- Your child is
seeking to develop of sense of himself—what he can do, who he is, how others see him,
and how he fits into the world. Our programs take into account the differing needs of
children ranging in age from five to twelve years of age to ensure that they successfully
find their place. Our schools carefully plan lessons and activities to support the interest of
each child, whether it is technology, sports, art, quiet reading, reader’s theatre, organized
games, or science.
Parent Choice
Designed With You In Mind- Our fun-filled and educational programs are aligned with
Imagine’s calendar and are available during early release days and other school breaks.
Economic Sustainability
Raising the Bar but not the Price- Making the transition to our new program as smoothly
as possible we have decided to keep the rates the same. Keeping with Imagine’s
accountability however we are raising the quality of care.
Character Development
Outdoor Adventures and Activities- To balance out the academic portion of your schoolage child’s day, our programs build in plenty of time for outdoor recreation and fun.
Academic Achievement
Help With Homework -In a relaxed and encouraging environment, your school-age
student will be provided with homework assistance by our caring and certified teachers.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
At Imagine West Melbourne our focus is on academics. However, we recognize that
extracurricular activities are important for the encouragement of additional skills as well as
the development of character in students. Please contact leadership immediately if you are
interested in sponsoring an extracurricular activity.

Library – In addition, all students are welcome to use the school library on a regular
basis. Students are responsible for returning any items by their due dates. If a library item
is lost or damaged, the student must pay the replacement cost (parents will receive a bill
for the replacement cost.) The library collections support Imagine West Melbourne
curriculum. Students can donate a “birthday book” – a volume of their choice given to
commemorate the student’s birthday and inscribed with the donor’s names and the date of
the gift.
FIELD TRIPS
Occasionally, a field trip is planned as an enhancement to a particular class. These field

trips are an integral part of the Imagine West Melbourne program and attendance is
required. All students must turn in a signed permission slip (and fee, if necessary) from
their parents or guardian before being permitted to attend the field trip. School buses or
charter buses will be used for transportation. Parents may choose to transport their child
privately, but may not transport any child other than their own. Standard dress code,
unless specifically announced otherwise by the teacher, is to be worn. If for some reason
your child will not attend a particular field trip, parents should notify the teacher in advance
and provisions may be made at school to accommodate the situation.
HOMEWORK
At Imagine West Melbourne, the teachers and administration strongly
believe that homework contributes to the academic success of
children. Homework serves as a link between the child, the home, and
the classroom. Homework fosters positive school attitudes, good study
habits, effective time management, and personal responsibility. While
recognizing the usefulness of homework, Imagine West Melbourne staff also strives to
minimize homework loads, realizing the need to maintain a balance in students’ lives.
Homework may be a daily activity for some students. Students who use their class time
responsibly should not have excessive amounts of homework (see chart below). If
students are consistently overwhelmed, parents should contact their teacher.

be possible.
Assign work for academic reasons to practice, reinforce, and master skills.
Provide clear directions for assignment, format, and due date.
Parents should:
 Provide an appropriate place and atmosphere for homework.
 Set aside homework/reading time nightly.
 Contact teacher if time spent on homework is excessive.
READING AT HOME
In addition to homework, students are expected to read an average of 20-30 minutes
every night. This will include parents reading to their child and/or a child reading
independently. Teachers may recommend books for the children to read and may also
send home a book for the parent and child to read together.
ACADEMIC HELP
Teachers are committed to helping students succeed. Please take advantage of
opportunities before or after school for individual help. Please make prior arrangements
with the teacher.
MONITORING STUDENT PROGRESS & REPORT CARDS
Parents should sign up for access the school database, EDLINE (directions
at the back of this handbook). This database allows parents to check on
student progress, missing assignments, homework, and attendance. Report
cards are distributed approximately one week after the conclusion of each
quarter, either at parent-teacher conferences or via the student.
GRADING SCALE
In kindergarten through second grade, we use the following grade scale. (Kindergarten
also incorporates a standards based grading system)
O = Outstanding
S = Satisfactory
N = Needs Improvement
U = Unsatisfactory
In Third grade through Middle School, the following grading scale is used.
(A) = 90%-100%
(B) = 80%-89%
(C) = 70%-79%
(D) = 60%-69%
(F) = 59% and below

PLACEMENT AND PROMOTION CRITERIA
Our primary goal at the elementary level is solid literacy. A child cannot go on to more
complex studies if he or she does not have adequate reading skills. In addition to literacy,
students must have attained competence in all the core subjects (English, including
reading, spelling, grammar, composition; history; math; science) over the course of the
year. Competence is attained by not only knowing the material but by completing assigned
work. Completion of work demonstrates not only the ability of the student in the various
subjects but also the mastery of study skills necessary for academic and personal
achievement. Students whose grades or skills fall below the requirements of their grade
level and if evidence indicates the student will not be successful with the more rigorous
studies at the next grade level, they will be considered for retention. Imagine West
Melbourne will work with the parents and the student to evaluate progress in academics,
social skills, work habits, emotional maturity, physical maturity, and family support of
retention. Based on a review of the evidence, the teacher and parent will make a
recommendation to the School Leader or Designee. All final decisions about retention are
made by the School Leader or Designee.
Students will be placed in the grade that is most appropriate for the child. Upon
registration, the school will obtain information about the child’s performance level from the
parent and previous school. Some pretesting will also be done if there are questions about
which grade placement will be best for the child’s successful experience at school. Final
decisions about grade placement will be made by the School Leader or Designee.
RETENTION PROCEDURE
When a student is not making adequate progress during the school year, the question of
retention may arise. Parents should be notified via a letter mid-year in order to make them
aware of the possibility and give the team (student, teacher, parent) a chance to remedy
the situation. If at the end of the year, retention is still an option and the parent and teacher
agree that retention is the best course of action, the parents should write a brief letter to
the school to record their decision to retain their child. If the parent disagrees with retention
as an option, a meeting will be set up between teacher, parent(s), and administration. The
principal, or designee, will review the advice from both teacher and parent(s) and make the
final decision on retention. A variety of academic aspects will be considered, from
classroom grades, assessment data, birth date, and social-emotional factors.
GIFTED PROCEDURE
Students may be nominated for testing to determine Gifted status by either teachers or
parents. The first step in this process is for the child to take the KBIT2 Assessment. For
students who score a 90% or above on the KBIT2 test, additional data points, including the
Renzulli Learning Profile are considered to determine Gifted status. The final decision is
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne
21
made by personnel in the Brevard Schools Gifted department. Once a child is designated
Gifted, a meeting is set up between parent, teacher, Imagine West Melbourne Gifted
Coordinator, and the principal or designee to create a Learning Plan to identify the
student’s needs and create a plan for addressing them. These needs are addressed
through differentiation within the child’s classroom. In certain circumstances, cross-grade
grouping and/or grade level skipping may be considered. The Brevard County Schools
process is followed when these methods are being contemplated.
INTERVENTIONS
When teachers notice that a student is not making appropriate progress in the classroom,
they will attempt a variety of strategies, or “interventions” within the classroom to help
support student success. These interventions are tracked through progress monitoring, or
data collection on a regular basis to determine the students’ “response to interventions”, or
the success of these strategies. If the student is making better progress with these
strategies in place, the interventions will be continued and the student’s progress will
continue to be monitored. Should these strategies not prove to be effective, a new
intervention and/or increased intensity of interventions will be employed and further
progress monitoring will take place. Should you have questions about your child’s progress
and the need for strategies, please first contact your child’s teacher.
SPECIAL EDUCATION PROCEDURE
With the implementation of interventions (see paragraph above), the goal is for a student
to make better progress. However, if this does not happen, even with increasing the
intensity of interventions, a referral for Special Education testing may be suggested. Prior
to testing, parents will be contacted; no testing will take place without parent approval.
Following the testing, a meeting between parent, teacher, Special Education staff
members, and administration will be called to determine if the student qualifies for Special
Education services. If a student qualifies, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) will be written
to set student goals and create a plan for meeting them.
INTERNET ACCESS
Parents must sign the Internet Use and Rules Agreement before students are allowed to
use the Internet. Students are responsible for proper behavior on school computer
networks just as they are in a classroom or a school hallway. General school rules for
behavior and communications apply. The network is provided for students to conduct
research and communicate with others. In most cases, teachers will limit the sites that the
student should access for a particular activity or assignment. The school’s firewall will
block those sites that the school deems inappropriate. Independent access to network
services is provided to students who agree to act in a considerate and r e s p o n s i b l e
manner.
CHARACTER EDUCATION
At Imagine West Melbourne, we seek to provide not only a solid academic foundation, but
also a firm grounding in moral and ethical values. This begins with clear standards for
personal conduct – basic expectations for appearance, behavior and attitude – that both
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne
22
enhance the learning atmosphere of the school and prepare children for life in a world of
other individuals with their own needs, opinions, and expectations.
We believe that a focus on character education through modeling, direct instruction, clear
expectations, and consistent follow through helps children learn how to become model
citizens. It is our goal to help each child develop a strong character based on integrity,
justice, respect for authority and the rights of others, and the responsibility to take care of
his own and other’s property. This includes regular attendance, few or no discipline
referrals, and behavior that will match the expectations of the school.
CORE VIRTUES
Each month, we emphasize a different core virtue, such as responsibility, respect, joy,
diligence, and so forth. These core virtues are discussed explicitly as well as through
illustrations in grade level curriculum (literature, history, etc.) In addition, regular
assemblies are held to showcase these core virtues and award students who exemplify
these traits.
POSITIVE RECOGNITION
Every teacher has a class wide behavior management system that is based on
Responsive Classroom, and a positive behavior system. We prefer to catch
and encourage students behaving well rather than using punitive methods of
control. Teachers use individual methods of rewarding student academic
and behavior progress, along with the use of positive behavior referrals.
Positive behavior referrals are submitted to the School Leader and the
positive behavior is recognized according to a teacher selected reinforcer.
In addition, school wide assemblies are held to recognize students for
academic achievement and the attainment of core virtues. Parents are
encouraged to attend these assemblies and to use the core virtue vocabulary in
conversations with their children.
DISCIPLINE
The chief advantage that our school enjoys in maintaining an appropriate learning climate
is the personal commitment to individual growth and learning. When this personal
approach becomes less than effective, a clearly-focused disciplinary procedure comes into
play. Our disciplinary system is based on the Responsive Classroom philosophy and
involves clearly defined behavior expectations, helping the child articulate how his/her
behavior was a violation of those expectations, natural consequences and refocus time.
Parents are contacted when behavior involves a significant consequence.
All our disciplinary efforts are guided by our understanding of child development and a
child’s need for structure and order, as well as by our commitment to fulfilling the
responsibility which the parents of our students have granted us. We make every attempt
to identify any academic or behavior issues that may be impeding a child’s progress o r
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne
23
contentment and stay in close contact with parents to anticipate difficulties that might be
developing.
Our ultimate recourse for handling a student who simply will not adapt to Imagine West
Melbourne’s standards is removing that child from the school, either temporarily or
permanently. It is crucial both to our ability to provide the kind of quality educational
experience we offer and to our institutional identity. Parents will be involved in any
suspensions or expulsions and such serious actions will follow a specific procedure
adopted by the school.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR
Every teacher is responsible for creating developmentally and age appropriate
classroom policies and procedures. Only major or serious offenses are referred
to the administration. There are twelve basic behaviors that may lead to a
disciplinary referral to the administration:
1. Chronic or Frequent Disrespect shown to any staff member. The
staff member will be the judge of whether or not disrespect has been
shown.
2. Weapons - having any type of weapons or toys that look like weapons
3. Rebellion - outright disobedience in response to instructions.
4. Fighting - striking in anger with the intention to harm another student.
5. Obscene language or gestures. Students are expected to use wholesome
language at all times.
6. Habitual Disruption of the educational process.
7. Stealing. It is a serious violation of Imagine West Melbourne philosophy and
policy to take something that does not belong to you, regardless of value. Any
student caught stealing will be subject to discipline by the school administration,
including the possibility of expulsion. Included in any discipline will be a matter of
restitution. Incidents of stealing will be handled on an individual basis, considering
the prior behavior record of the involved student or students.
8. Vandalism. A student involved in willfully damaging school property may receive
a three-day suspension. A second offense may result in a five-day suspension and
consideration for expulsion. The student will also be responsible for paying the
costs to repair the damage.
9. Dishonesty/Cheating. As exemplary citizens, Imagine West Melbourne students
are expected to maintain absolute integrity as members of the student body. All
provable incidents of cheating will receive a zero for the paper, quiz, test, or
assignment as well as an office referral
11. All forms of tobacco and the use of alcohol or any controlled substance
such as drugs are forbidden on school property. Possession in any form or the
attempt to sell any such substances will result in an automatic three day suspension
and can result in expulsion.
LUNCHROOM RULES
1) Follow the supervisor’s directions at all times.
2.) Sit in the grade level groupings as assigned by the supervisor.
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne
24
3.) Conversation is encouraged at tables. Please keep voices to an appropriate indoor
level.
4.) Use good manners and pick up after yourself. Individual tables will be dismissed by
a lunchroom supervisor when the table and surrounding area has been cleaned up.
PLAYGROUND RULES
1) Follow the supervisor’s directions at all times.
2) Use equipment safely and for its intended purpose.
3) Stay within the boundaries.
4) No tackling, grabbing clothes, or rough play.
5) All games must be designed to include anyone who wishes to play.
CONSEQUENCES
Any student who is a habitual offender of school rules may be subject to suspension and
may be considered for expulsion depending on the severity and frequency. Habitual
offenders must have a remedial discipline plan in place (see below) and will be placed on
the appropriate level per Brevard County Schools policy and Florida state law.
Imagine West Melbourne does not permit the use of tobacco, drugs, alcohol, profanity,
racial slurs, derogatory remarks, or gambling at school or any school sponsored activity. In
addition, use of drugs or alcohol, sexual immorality, threats of harm to faculty, staff, or
students during or after school hours and on or off campus will automatically result in
suspension from school for a minimum of three (3) days, and the student will be
considered for expulsion. When expulsion is considered for any student, his/her behavior
record for the school year and the nature of offense will be taken into account. In addition,
any student who consistently possesses and shares with others a negative attitude toward
Imagine West Melbourne, faculty, or fellow students may be called on to meet in a
disciplinary meeting with parents and school administration or designee.
Remedial discipline plans - The principal or designee may develop a remedial
discipline plan for any student who has not followed the code of conduct for students. The
goal of the remedial plan shall be to address the student’s disruptive behavior and
educational needs while keeping the child in school.
Discipline of habitually disruptive students - Students who have been
suspended three times during the school year in violation of their individual remedial
discipline plans shall be declared habitually disruptive students which may result in or
expulsion.
Suspension - Suspension from school is a serious step in the discipline procedure of
Imagine West Melbourne. It is used when other attempts to correct a problem have been
unsuccessful. Suspension may result from repeated violations of school rules or a single
serious violation of school rules. The length of suspension is determined by the frequency
or severity of the offense, and may be from a half day to five days in duration. Any
suspension requires parent contact with the administration prior to the student being
allowed to return to classes. Details of the suspension process are found in the Board
policy manual. This includes both in and out of school suspension.

Expulsion – The final authority on expulsion is the Brevard County School District.
SEXUAL HARASSMENT
Families today find it increasingly difficult in our society to protect their children from
sexually explicit messages or images either on the television, computer screen, radio, or
grocery store check-out line. The immediate impact of these images and messages on our
children is most evident in the way that we see young people either speak to or treat others
in ways that have strong sexual undertones to them. It is our goal at Imagine West
Melbourne to counteract these images by nurturing a vision of friendship.
As a school however, we are prepared to deal with sexual harassment which we define as
sexually oriented remarks, behavior or jokes that make you so uncomfortable, for a
significant period of time that you consider not coming to school, or a particular class or
activity. A student’s responsibility is to clearly indicate that the remarks, behavior,
demands, etc. are not welcome and are offensive to you. This is not an easy thing to do,
but you must make this clear to the people who are making you uncomfortable. If it does
not stop, the student and his/her parents must report it to the teacher in charge.
BULLYING
Bullying is a form of intimidation. It is comprised of repeated acts over an extended period
of time. These acts may be written, physical, or verbal in nature. Bullying involves a real or
perceived imbalance of power with the more powerful individual or group abusing those
who are less powerful.
We will follow these general procedures for incidents of bullying.
 We expect children and adults to notify the appropriate adult (teacher or School
Administration or Designee) if any bullying is occurring.
 We will provide training for students on what is bullying and how we want to
prevent bullying – no matter what type of bullying is occurring.
 A bullying report form will be completed for ALL reported incidents.
 The teacher or School Administration or Designee will meet with the students
involved either separately or collectively. Individual parent meetings may also
occur.
 A plan will be developed including actions to deal with the situation prompting the
act and appropriate consequences.
 A follow up in 2 weeks and 1 month will occur to assure that the bullying does not
continue.
 If bullying continues and the school is not able to work out an agreeable plan to
stop the bullying, the person doing the bullying may be suspended. In severe
cases, the student’s enrollment in the school may be in jeopardy.
WEAPONS AT SCHOOL
Any student carrying, bringing, using or possessing any dangerous or deadly weapon in
any school building, on school grounds or at any school sponsored event shall be
recommended for expulsion. The following are dangerous weapons: firearms (including air
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne
26
guns and pellet guns – loaded or unloaded, operable or inoperable), firearm facsimiles,
fixed blade knife with a blade length of greater than 3 ½ inches, spring-loaded or pocket
knife with a blade of more than three inches, any knife used to threaten harm to others,
brass knuckles, bludgeons or any other device or substance intended to be used to inflict
serious bodily injury or death. Students who inadvertently bring in a dangerous or deadly
weapon will not be punished if he or she immediately, and voluntarily, notifies an adult at
school and gives up the weapon.
STUDENT HEALTH INFORMATION
STUDENT ILLNESS
The most important thing for preventing the spread of illness is to keep sick people
away from healthy people. If your child is sick, we expect you to keep your child
home to help them get well and to prevent the spread of illnesses.
If your child has a sore throat, persistent cough, runny nose, body aches,
vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever over 100 F degrees or 37.7 C degrees, please
keep your child home until they are symptom-free for 24 hours – without the
use of fever-reducing medicine.
Following, are the Guidelines for keeping your student home:
The beginning of any infectious illness is usually the time it is most likely to spread
to others. This is also the time your student is probably feeling unable to participate
in class. In order to keep everyone healthy, we ask that you observe the following
guidelines and keep your student home if she/he exhibits any of the following:
- Fever, vomiting, or diarrhea: Your student should remain home for 24 hours after
symptoms end.
- Colds/respiratory viruses: Keep your student home at the beginning of a cold. This is
also the time when one is most infectious and least likely to feel well enough to participate
in class. When she/he feels better and no longer has a persistent cough, it is permissible
to return to school.
- Strep Throat: Your student may return to school after taking the antibiotic for 24 hours,
feeling better, and being free of symptoms.
- Chicken Pox: Your student should stay home until there are no new lesions and all
existing lesions have scabbed over.
- Pink eye: Any eye infection must be treated by a physician before the student returns to
school. If antibiotic therapy is prescribed, the student must remain home for at least 24
hours after treatment has begun, and must be free of eye drainage.
- Open sores on skin: All skin lesions must be covered by a bandage or clothing during
the school day. This may include impetigo, ring worm, scabies, and other fungal, bacterial
or viral skin infections.
- Generalized skin rash: Any student with an undiagnosed skin rash must be seen by a
physician for diagnosis and/or treatment before returning to school with a note from the
health care provider.
- Head lice: Your student may return to school only after treatment with lice shampoo.
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne

A student will be sent home from school if she/he has any of the above conditions
and/or has a temperature of 100.1 degrees F. or more.
SHOT RECORDS
Brevard County School District Immunization Requirements
Florida law requires children in school to have an immunization record on
file and to have the required immunizations. Immunizations protect our
children from disease. If your child cannot receive immunizations because of
medical reasons or because you have a religious or personal reason to
exempt your child, the exemption line on the Certificate of Immunization must
be signed and the exempted vaccines must be listed. This certificate is
available at the schools.
Following are the required immunizations for entering Kindergarten:
5 DTP
4 POLIO
2 MMR
3 HEPATITIS B
2 VARICELLA (or written verification from your doctor if your child has had the disease)
Please give your child’s immunization records to the office.
Following are the required immunizations for 1st through 5th grade:
5 DTaP
4 POLIO

MEDICATIONS
Parents are expected to bring medications to school and leave them with the health clerk
or office personnel who will administer all medications. For safety reasons no
medications will be sent home with children. When at all possible, please try to schedule
drugs to be administered at home. Medications ordered for administration three times a
day should be administered before school, after school, and at bedtime. If drugs must be
administered at school, please try to arrange the schedule so that the drug is administered
around the lunch hour to avoid disruption of the instructional program.
THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE MUST BE FOLLOWED FOR DRUGS TO
ADMINISTERED AT SCHOOL:
BE
Prescription Medications - must come in the bottle dispensed by the pharmacy. We
suggest you have a bottle for school and a bottle for home. The bottle label must include
the following information:
1. Student’s name
2. Prescribing doctor’s name
3.Name of the drug, dosage, and the time the drug is to be administered
4. Prescription date
5. Date medication is to be stopped
Over The Counter Medications - such as Tylenol and cold medications must be brought
to school in the bottle or box in which they were purchased. The student’s name must
be written on the container, and the dosage must match the signed health care
provider’s authorization. Container will be kept in the main office.
A Medication Consent Form - This form must be completed and signed by both the
parent /guardian and a Health Care Provider with prescriptive authority and must
accompany each medication, either prescription or over the counter. The form can be
found at the back of this handbook or in the school office. It is wise for parents to keep a
couple of copies of this form at home and to take this form to the health care provider
office at each visit. The form must include:
1. Student’s name
2. Name of medication
3. Amount of medication to be administered
4. Time the medication is to be administered
5. Date medication is to be stopped
6. Permission for the school to administer the medication
7. For medications administered on an “as needed basis” the note must indicate
the amount to be administered, the frequency, and the reason for giving the
student the drug.
NO MEDICATION WILL BE ADMINISTERED IF IT COMES IN A BAGGIE, PLAIN
BOTTLE, ENVELOPE, ETC. The parent will be called and the medication will not be
administered.
We feel that in fairness to those responsible for giving the medications, and for the safety
of your child, these policies must be followed strictly. This is not meant to inconvenience
you, but to ensure the health and well being of all students.
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne
29
The health clerk’s office is available for students who are ill, injured, or have a health
concern. Students must obtain permission from a teacher to come to the office except in
the case of an emergency. Students are not permitted to bring in medications. Parents
must bring medications directly to the office.
MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION
BIRTHDAY PARTIES
Invitations for children’s birthday parties should not be distributed at
school. Birthday celebrations at school need to be prearranged with the
teacher. They will occur during the last 20 minutes of the day or during
the student’s lunch period. Families can provide an appropriate birthday
treat.
CELL PHONES AND PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Imagine West Melbourne recognizes the value of personal electronic devices such
as cell phones, personal digital assistants, MP3 players, etc. Such devices are
useful to organize information, access information and as a communication
tool. Such devices are not banned from school but may not be used in
class or during regular school hours unless specific permission has been
granted by the teacher. All cell phones must be turned off during
school hours and left in the student’s backpacks. Such devices may
be confiscated if they are being used during school hours. If the
device is confiscated, the device will be brought to the office and
will only be returned to the parent.
CHILD ABUSE REPORTING
NOTICE TO ALL PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF IMAGINE WEST MELBOURNE
STUDENTS: We are obligated by federal, state, and local laws to inform all parentsguardians of the following statutes concerning alleged child abuse and/or neglect:
1) By Law, the Florida Department of Children and Families has the prerogative to make
an unscheduled visit to Imagine West Melbourne and require that a student who is the
subject of a child abuse/neglect report be interviewed during school hours without any
obligation to notify the parents/guardians of the student or seek permission from the
parents/guardians to conduct the interview;
2) Legally, we also need to inform parents that any Imagine West Melbourne employee
who has reasonable cause to know or suspect that a child has been subjected to abuse or
neglect is legally REQUIRED to report or cause a report to be made of such fact to the
Department of Children and Families immediately. Therefore, if a discussion between an
Imagine West Melbourne employee and a parent/guardian concerning a student leads the
employee to a conclusion that there is reasonable cause to suspect that the student has
been subjected to abuse or neglect, the employee is REQUIRED BY LAW to report the
parent or guardian to the CPS immediately.
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne
30
If you have any questions about this, please contact the Florida Department of Children
and Families (800) 962-2873
CHILD CUSTODY
In most cases, when parents are divorced, both parents continue to have equal rights
where their children are concerned. If any parent has a court order that limits the rights of
the other parent in matters such as custody, records access, or visitation, please bring a
copy to the office. Unless such a court order is on file with Imagine West Melbourne, the
school must provide equal rights to both parents. The school will strive to meet the needs
of the divorced parents but, in general, one parent teacher conference will be scheduled
and both parents will be asked to attend. One report card each reporting term will be
issued to the designated parent.
CLOSED CAMPUS
Imagine West Melbourne has a closed campus policy. Students must stay on the school
grounds from the time they arrive at school until dismissal or until they are signed out by a
parent or guardian. Sign-outs must be done in the school office. If a student arrives at
school after the start time, the student should sign in at the office.
Students who must leave school during the day due to illness or appointment must check
out through the office. The office should be informed through a note or telephone call on or
before the day of an appointment. In order to maintain a safe environment, parents should
come to the office to sign out their child. When a student returns after an appointment, the
parent should sign the child back in at the office.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
The school has specific emergency procedures for all types of emergencies. These have
been developed in cooperation with emergency personnel and are designed to keep
students safe. Sometimes, the school will be in a “lock-down” where all doors are locked
and no one, not even parents, are allowed inside. In some emergency situations, cell
phones are not permitted in order to keep lines free for emergency personnel. Parents are
always welcome to come and review the emergency procedures handbook if they have
questions about what the school will do in emergencies. If parents are notified to come
pick up their children through a reverse 911 type system, please understand that the
school will ask that you show a picture ID when picking up children.
FORGOTTEN ITEMS
Students will not be allowed to call home to retrieve forgotten homework,
lunch or other items. Natural consequences for those forgotten items
will help the child to remember them in the future. Forgotten items
delivered to the school for a student will be left in the office. The
student may check during breaks such as recess or before lunch for a
forgotten lunch or other item. The teacher or office staff is not responsible for retrieving or
delivering forgotten items for students. Parents are not to disrupt class to deliver forgotten
items.
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne

HOLIDAY PARTIES
Holiday parties are permitted during the last 45 minutes of major holidays. Each
classroom will have a designated “room parent” who will work with the teacher to plan and
coordinate holiday parties.
LOST AND FOUND
All coats, sweaters, etc. should be labeled in case they are lost. The lost and found will be
located in a designated area near the office. Items left in the lost and found will be picked
up by a service organization on a regular basis.
PETS
For safety reasons, animals, including leashed pets, may not be brought to
the school grounds unless they are part of the Canine Companion Program.
However , children may bring their pet dog or cat or other animal to school
for “show and tell” as long as appropriate arrangements are used to bring
and pick up the pet(s) and prior permission is obtained through the school

positive adult examples and effective anti-tobacco educational programs.
For purposes of this policy, the following definitions shall apply; fuller definitions may be
found in state law.
1. "School property" shall mean all property owned, leased, rented or otherwise
used by the school, including but not limited to the following:
a. The interior portions of any building or other structure;
b. All grounds over which the school exercises control, including areas around
any buildings, playgrounds, athletic fields, recreation areas and parking areas;

STUDENT RECORDS
The school maintains important files of information on each student. Students and their
parents or guardians, may review those records with reasonable advance notice to the
school. Parents have the right to challenge any educational record on the grounds that it is
inaccurate or misleading. School officials may obtain access to student records for
educational purposes. All individually identifiable educational information is confidential
except for “directory” information. Directory information includes the student’s name, date
of birth, place of birth, participation in officially recognized sports and activities, height and
weight (for athletic teams), dates of attendance, degrees, and other honors awarded.
STUDENT VALUABLES
Students should not bring large amounts of money, radios, cameras, electronic games,
etc. to school. At all times students are to keep track of glasses, watches, and other
valuables. Students, not the school, are responsible for their personal property. If it is
necessary to bring a valuable item to school, please bring it to the office for safekeeping.
When an item is lost, the student should report it to the teacher or the office. The school
staff will attempt to help the student locate the item but the school is not responsible for
supervising personal property, locating it, or paying for lost personal property. The
school does not file claims for lost personal property with the police department for
parents or students.
TELEPHONES
In order to respect the educational opportunity of all students,
classrooms will not be disrupted to deliver phone messages, or to call
students to the telephone. Students are not to use the telephones without express
prior permission from an Imagine West Melbourne staff member. Please be sure that
you have your daily pick-up plans as well as an Inclement Weather Pick Up Plan
established with your child. Passing phone messages along to students during
the course of the school day is extremely disruptive to classroom instruction.
FREEDOM FROM DISCRIMINATION
Imagine West Melbourne policies provide that students will not be discriminated against
or denied the benefits of educational programs or activities based on any student’s race,
gender, religion, ethnicity, national origin, age, or disability in any Imagine West
Melbourne program or activity. If any student believes that he/she has been
discriminated against, notify the Imagine West Melbourne Administration or Designee.
The Administration and Imagine West Melbourne Governing Board
reserve the right to modify this handbook, as necessary, to promote
the safe and efficient operation of Imagine West Melbourne.

Permission for Medication
We attempt to discourage administration of medication in the schools. However, if your physician decides it
is necessary for your child to receive medication during the school day, his approval and specific directions
must be provided to the school. It is recommended the first doses of medication be administered at home.
Send the medication to the school in the original or a duplicate box or bottle with the current prescription
label on the container. Upon request, pharmacists have labeled empty containers to be used.
Please have your physician record his instructions regarding the administration of your child’s medications.

Handbook Acknowledgement
(This page must be signed and returned to the school office)
Students, parents, teachers, counselors, administrators, office staff and volunteers all
have important roles to play in our school. With so many people working together
problems may occur from time to time. Rules have been made to address these
problems. Like laws, rules apply to everyone and they work only when everyone
knows what they are.
This Student Handbook contains our addendum to the Secondary code of conduct of
Brevard County Schools. This book also refers to our general policies and procedures
as well as academic information.
Since parents/guardians can be held responsible for the actions of their children, it is
important that they are aware of the rules and consequences if the rules are broken.
Imagine Schools at West Melbourne must have proof that every student and every
parent/guardian has had a chance to read the Student Handbook in its entirety or
hear it read aloud. Signed forms must be part of every student’s record. Your
signature means that you have received this booklet and know the rules as well as
consequences.
