Community hero retires
CPF came together to bid farewell to the outgoing Sandton Police Station Commander

The Sandton CPF, community members
and members of the South African Police
Services (Saps) came together on 2
September to bid a fond farewell to outgoing
Sandton Police Station Commander,
Brigadier Alan Billings.
Billings retired at the end of August
and was a well-respected and admired
law enforcer. He said, “It is bittersweet to
be retiring and I [will] miss the structure
and routine. But it is nice to get some new
brooms in to run the show.”
He urged young police officers aspiring
for advancement to further their education.
Billings said this on the eve of his retirement
after 40 years of unbroken service, having
educated himself after matric, obtaining a
police diploma and a master’s degree in law.
He is currently preparing for admission as an
Advocate of the High Court.
In a message of encouragement to
aspiring police officers, he said, “Nothing
will prepare them better for the challenging
police work than education. It will improve
their efficiency and creativity when dealing
with the evolving nuances and trends in
crime.” Billings joined the police in 1978
during the political upheavals when many
lost their lives for freedom and when black
police officers struggled to earn the respect
of their white counterparts. Despite this, he
rose through the ranks and led many stations
in Joburg and Pretoria.
He commanded the Sandton station for
10 years, a period he said was challenging
and rewarding, given the clout and nature
of the area and its residents who include
top national, business, industry and foreign
institution leaders who put State institutions
under intense scrutiny 24/7.
In an effort to maintain the high policing
standards left by Billings, the CPF hopes to
work closely with the community and the
Sandton police to ensure that there will be
a smooth transition. Sandton Community
Police Forum (CPF) chairperson, Anthony
Modena, said, “Brigadier Alan Billings... is
an example of how the police come together
with the CPF to make a difference.
“The definition of synergy is, one-plusone-equals-three.
What this means is that working together
as a community results in more being
achieved.” He added that the CPF was
Brigadier Alan Billings (Seated on the left) with his family, friends, colleagues, and members of the CPF, at his farewell.

Police Act that focused on establishing
relationships with the police, assisting them
in solving crimes and assisting the police

crimes.
Wendy Robertson, former chairperson of
the Sandton CPF, paid tribute to Billings in a
heartfelt speech.
She fondly referred to him as ‘The Brig’
and her speech was indicative of the CPF’s
admiration and gratitude. She said, “The
Brig has a rare ability to ensure discipline
whilst empowering the staff members
serving under him.”
Billings said, for now, he looks forward to
a family holiday he viewed as a luxury when
still in service, and to waking up at 7am
instead of 4.30am.

Nightmare ride in ‘Uber’

this is a function of the society we
live in and sick individuals find
opportunities in methods of transport
we deem safe.”
He alleged that when family
contacted Uber to find out what had
happened to the pair, Uber chose not
to assist in locating the riders. “I will
not be using the popular... app any
longer.”
In response to the information
provided by Sewkuran, Samantha
Allenberg who deals with
communications at Uber said, “This
is a despicable crime and our first
thoughts are with the victims and
their families.”
She added that social media is
one of the many support channels
where riders and drivers can contact
Uber. “Upon learning of this [the
kidnapping of the couple], our
incident response team immediately
contacted the authorities and took
precautionary measures to restrict
access from accounts where there
was any potential connection.
“While there was a delayed
response on social media, our
incident response team, who is
trained to deal with any critical
safety issues, was already in contact
with the riders and their families to
offer our full support.”
She added that Uber is assisting
the police in an ongoing criminal
investigation and cannot say more
at this time. “As a general point of
[email protected]
Uber has been widely spoken about,
discussed and debated in the media
for numerous reasons.
Once again, the public transport
service has come under scrutiny after
a Facebook user, Akshar Sewkuran,
posted a public status relaying the
harrowing experience that his friend
and girlfriend had after getting into
an Uber in Sunninghill.
The Facebook status read: “They
[friend and girlfriend] had requested
an Uber which they got into and
noticed the telltale signs of an Uber.”
He went on to explain that, shortly
after departing, two men allegedly
hiding in the boot pushed the back
seats down and wriggled into the car.
It is claimed they stabbed his friend
numerous times and subsequently
pulled the couple back into the boot.
The kidnappers then are said to
have taken the couple to Tembisa
where they were forced to withdraw
money from their accounts.
“They were then held in a house
in Tembisa township where they
were kept through the night, and
subjected my friend to random
beatings through the early hours of
the morning,” he continued.
Fortunately, Sewkuran’s
friend was able to alert Tembisa
community members who assisted
him.
Sewkuran added, “The point I
principle, if there is any allegation
of wrongdoing by a driver using
Uber they are immediately prevented
from accessing the app until an
investigation can be concluded.”
She added that Uber has since
been in contact with the families
of the victims and said they have
offered their full support. “We are
assisting law enforcement in their
investigation and we will continue
to provide them with information
to support their efforts to bring
whoever is responsible to justice.”
She stressed that Uber was
committed to the safety of everyone
who used their service. “It’s why
we are constantly developing new
technologies to ensure safety before,
during, and after every ride.
“This includes giving riders’
information about their driver;
tracking all trips using GPS from
beginning to end; enabling riders
to share their ETA or route; and
incorporating feedback from riders
and drivers. Riders can also share
their ETA [estimated time of arrival]
with family and friends so that they
can track the trip.”
Allenberg highlighted a few safety
tips. “We strongly encourage riders
to take [steps] in order to ensure
their own personal safety.
“Only take trips with drivers you
request through the app... Doublecheck the licence plate, driver name
and photo shown to you in the
application.”
Brothers up for robbery in Marlboro
Leseho Manala
and another two approached from
the driver’s side while pointing
a gun at the driver’s head. They
demanded his cellphone and money.
They searched him and allegedly
stole his wallet containing R300 and
other items, totalling R2 000.
One of the men was said to have
shouted, ‘Shoot the bastard’ while
the victim pleaded for mercy; his
head was beaten resulting in an
injury. The victim revved the car,
forcing the suspects to scatter, at
which pointed, he passed out. When
he recovered, his wrecked vehicle
was against a damaged wall of a
nearby private and guarded home
[email protected]
Two brothers were remanded
in custody at the Alexandra
Magistrate’s Court pending further
investigation for an armed robbery
in Marlboro in May this year.
Mob justice resulted in one of the
brothers being hospitalised.
The pair allegedly committed the
crime with two others, who are still
at large. The incident occurred at
11.30am on 20 May this year when
a motorist was waiting at a four-way
intersection. Two men approached
the victim from the passenger side
and he was surrounded by a crowd.
The victim heard a snoring sound
and asked the guard to investigate;
he discovered a stranger inside the
yard of the home. The stranger was
hauled out and allegedly identified
by the victim as one of the robbers.
Police were called but by the time
they arrived, the crowd had beaten
him up badly. He was taken by
ambulance to hospital for a month of
treatment under police guard.
The suspect implicated his
brother in the robbery, leading to his
brother’s arrest.
The weapon was recovered at the
scene and found to be a toy gun.

Roadworks cause dusty mess
Pascale Michael
[email protected]
On 25 August, during peak hour traffic
at about 6pm, a portion of William Nicol
Drive and Sandton Drive was covered in
a cloud of dust as a result of roadworks
along Sutherland Avenue.
In the article, Road repairs cause
frustration, Week ending 26 August, the
repair work on the avenue was reported on.
Sutherland Avenue runs parallel to William
Nicol and adjacent to Sandton Drive
and is, therefore, a well-used route for
commuters. As a result of the roadworks,
the avenue is currently a sand road and this
is problematic for various reasons.
Lori Klein, who is a lower Sandhurst
resident and the administrator for her
area advised, “Road users should not be
using this sand road as this will cause
excessive amounts of dust. Furthermore,
Sutherland is infamously a dangerous road
with a sharp bend and there is a high risk
of accidents there. Until Sutherland has
been properly repaired, drivers should use

Klein highlighted that the repairs were of
utmost importance, as there were numerous
potholes and this made it dangerous for
drivers.
The spokesperson for the Johannesburg
Road Agency, Bertha Peters-Scheepers
said the repairs being done on Sutherland
Avenue were being conducted as part of the
agency’s Rehabilitation and Reconstruction
Programme, and the ongoing Roads
Resurfacing Programme which both
form part of the agency’s 10-year Roads
Development Plan.

department at Zandfontein and even met a
man on site to view the problem,” she said.
Williams added that the person in
charge at the department at the time said
the problems lay with a contractor laying
cables and as soon as that was done,
he would attend to the issue. Efforts to
obtain the contractor’s details proved
unsuccessful.
“The park is used in the afternoons for
children to learn soccer and they could
get injured should they run after the ball
[because] the netting is falling down
around the holes. And, needless to say, the
stench is disgusting,” said Williams.
DA ward councillor, Werner Smit,
visited the site and has reported it, along
with other sewage leaks in the area.

under a new municipal administration,” he
said.

A speedy response by 7Arrows security
officers, Obed Mahlase and Ignitius Pheko,
helped contain a fire which broke out at a
residence in Wendywood recently.
“You can never imagine it happening to
you,” said neighbour Jodi Gordon. After
being woken up by thick smoke and loud
cracking noises, Gordon’s initial thought
was that it was a bad thunderstorm.
However, once she heard her son shouting
‘fire’, panic spread through the Gordon
household. The fire had engulfed her
neighbour’s lapa which is situated only 3m
away from the family home.
“When you see fire move, you know it’s
not going to just stop by itself. I will never
forget how shocking it was to look out of
my window and see a wall of bright orange
flames about to consume my family and my
home, we were terrified for our lives,” said
Gordon.
After receiving a panic alarm from
Gordon, the 7Arrows Security control room
dispatched the two officers to the scene. On
arrival, they were met with a roaring fire
that had engulfed the entire lapa and garden
area.
Using buckets filled with water, Pheko
and Mahlase tirelessly attended to the blaze
along with members of the community, and
within 30 minutes the fire was under control
before emergency services arrived.
“At around 3am in the morning, we got
a call from our control room asking us to
respond urgently to a panic signal,” said
Mahlase.
“We quickly realised how big the fire
was and that the residents in the house
were not aware of it and still asleep. It
came naturally to both of us to jump in
and help with putting out the fire as it was
apparent it wasn’t going to stop and was life
threatening.”
Gordon said, “I cannot thank 7Arrows
enough, the two guards who responded
were amazing and were not only front and
centre in putting out the fire, but showed
such care towards myself and my two
children. They not only reacted immediately
but made my family’s well-being their
absolute priority.”
The cause of the fire has not yet
been determined and is currently
being investigated by the Sandton Fire
Department.

Shedding

Chronicle Reporter

The Parkmore Community Association
(PCA) said that one of the most
common concerns in the suburb is
faulty street lights.
The association stated that it regularly
reports faulty street lights, but that it
is difficult to get City Power to attend
to issues. Residents are urged to report
any street lights that are out on the City
Power web fault reporting platform.
The more issues are reported, the
greater chance the issues will be seen to
and streetlights repaired.
When reporting, it is also helpful
to email the reference number to
the association so members of the
association can escalate the matter to
the ward councillor.
The PCA regularly reports potholes
to the Johannesburg Roads Agency
hotline.

baboons are great mothers. Spirit’s

“More likely is the sad fact that
her mother was killed by hunting

McKenzie said she took Spirit

“People must realise that
primates are not pets,” McKenzie
said.
Once Spirit is ready, physically

She will eventually be released

Malala talks on current affairs
Pascale Michael
[email protected]
Justice Malala, an award-winning
journalist and presenter of the
Justice Factor, an eNCA interview
and news show, delivered a speech
at Investec in Sandton to the media
and members of the public.
He tackled topical issues in the
political, economic and social
environment of South Africa and
used quotes and cartoons to add
satire and wit to his presentation.
He chose specifically to focus on
the 2016 elections and the news that
had surrounded this event.
He expressed great concern when
explaining the ongoing Hawks
investigation into the alleged
unlawful activities of finance
minister, Pravin Gordhan. To his
mind, these allegations are incorrect
and misguided.
“Institutions [such as the Hawks]
are important and our children need
to be able to use them in 10 years,”
he said.
In terms of the topical 2016
elections, he said many eligible
voters chose not to vote this year.
“The truth is that three million ANC
voters stayed at home and did not
vote. The key to the next elections
lies in these three million people.”
The issue of coalitions being
formed between numerous
opposition parties has been widely
discussed and debated. Malala
stressed, “Nothing has been signed
between the DA and the EFF... The
DA are only hoping that the EFF
will always support them.”
He hypothesised that Jacob Zuma
would stay in power until the ANC
Lekgotla in December next year.
“There are talks that this conference
is to be moved forward, but as
a result of the ANC’s R1-billion
election campaign, they do not have
the necessary funds for this... These
conferences are costly.”
He highlighted that racism was
going to be at the forefront of
many future conversations. “Race
and racism will be a big trend
over the next few years... It’s a
conversation to be had and young
people will force us to have these
conversations.”
In terms of the social issues that
South Africans face, he discussed
the burning of buses, protests and
unnecessary deaths. He believes
these incidents of violence are
politically linked and political
parties cannot lose touch with their
people. “When we talk about people
that do not even have shoes... this
is the real problem in our country...
we need to deal with the 8.9 million
people who are unemployed.”
Malala also predicted that land
disputes and land claims would take
centre stage in the near future.

As reports of fresh #FeesMustFall protests
emerge, the Presidency has stated that
consultations are still taking place on
university fee increases.
In the past few weeks, there have been
reports that university fees for the 2017
academic year will increase by between
six and seven percent. “Consultations
within government and with stakeholders
in the higher education sector are still
taking place as announced by the Minister
of Higher Education and Training, Dr
Blade Nzimande. An announcement will
only be made once the process has been
completed,” reads a statement from the
office of the Presidency.
Spokesperson for the Presidency,
Bongani Ngqulunga said President Jacob
Zuma had appointed a Commission of
Inquiry led by Judge Jonathan Heher to
look into the funding of higher education
and training to find long-term solutions.
“The Presidency has reiterated
government’s position that a decision
on whether there will be university fee
increases or not, will be announced
once the process of consultations with
stakeholders in the higher education sector
has been completed,” Ngqulunga added.
There were reports in the media that
suggested that Zuma had instructed
Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and
Nzimande to find money for another zeropercent fee increase for 2017.
The National Treasury told the Fees
Commission of inquiry, looking into the
feasibility of free tertiary education, that a
zero-percent fee increment for 2017 was
not budgeted for.
The Higher Education Transformation
Network, an independent non-profit
network of graduates and alumni from
various higher education and further
educational institutions across South
Africa, called on Nzimande to reject
the proposal by the council on higher
education that institutions increase their
fees by six percent for the 2017 academic
year.
The Network said the minister should
wait until the presidential commission
on higher education makes its findings
around the feasibility of free education.

He recognised the contribution of women
in 1956 and said, "We should bear in mind
that it was through principled unity and
sheer determination that they were able to
raise their voices against the degradation of
African women, in particular."
The MEC highlighted that it was because
of those women's heroic achievements that
government today continued to work at
improving the living conditions of womanheaded households.
According to Vadi, the aim of the session
was to recognise the contribution and
celebrate the achievements of women in
building the country, particularly women
in the minibus taxi industry. "We are
encouraged to see women making strides
in what is traditionally a male dominated
sector, with some owning and operating
their [own] minibus taxis."
Vadi added that there was a lot more
which still needed to be done to improve the
conditions of women in the taxi industry,
highlighting that full participation of women
in the taxi industry was needed.
He said his department was calling for
more representation by women in top
management positions within the taxi
industry. "The industry should create an
enabling environment for women to actively
participate in and provide leadership for
its growth and inclusion into the integrated
MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail

public transport system."
Vadi said more opportunities were being
made available for women and highlighted
that the Gauteng Provincial Government
had made strides in providing opportunities
for the economic emancipation of women.
According to Vadi, women have been
supported to start up and grow their own
businesses and the provincial government
provides services that include the
registration, incubation and growth of
women-led organisations.
"We believe that more can be achieved
through the provision of support for
co-operatives, facilitation of trade and
investment as well as increased participation
of women in strategic economic and
transport infrastructure projects," Vadi
concluded. Most women who attended
the session said it was informative and
were happy that they were told about other
business opportunities that they could
pursue outside the taxi industry.

The Gauteng Department of Education
said placement of pupils for the 2017
academic year is on track.
MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi,
gave an update on the online applications
for next year which is mainly targeting
Grade 1 and 8 pupils. "Despite initial
teething problems, the system has
worked well and has met several of the
expectations."
He mentioned that the department is
currently in the process of placing pupils,
and anticipates to conclude this by 7
September.
Lesufi highlighted that only 44 percent
of all applications for Grade 1 and 8 have
been placed, while 73 347 applications are
still pending confirmation by parents.
The MEC did not shy away from
acknowledging that the placement of
pupils is moving at a slower pace than
anticipated, but said the reason is partly
due to parents not confirming offers.
"Parents are urged to confirm acceptance
or reject offers of placement, either on
the admissions online application or by
visiting schools where assistance will be
provided. Failure to respond will result in
parents forfeiting their offers of placement
[which] causes further placement delays,"
Lesufi highlighted.
He mentioned that the problem
confronting the department is that there
will be a rush in January and some schools
may be underutilised.
Parents who still have problems
with placement outcomes may object
to the district directors by completing
an objection form (Annexure D). The
objection form, which is obtainable from
the school or the district office, must be
submitted to the relevant district office
for processing.
Parents who have not yet made
applications for admission for the
2017 intake are encouraged to apply
online or to go to the relevant district
where assistance will be provided.
Late applications will be placed by 16
November.
Lesufi said there will be no admissions
processed in January next year. The
department will provide parents with
unplaced pupils an opportunity to resolve
queries in the four regions (Tshwane,
Sediwest, Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg)
at the regional admissions open days
between October and November.
MEC for Education in Gauteng, Panyaza
Lesufi, urges parents to confirm
placements for their children.

A lot of skill and passion goes
into running a small business
and the 702 Small Business
Awards in partnership with
Sandton-based accounting
software company, Sage
One, acknowledged these
small businesses at an awards
ceremony.
The event took place at the
Primedia Building situated on
Friedman Drive in Sandton.
These awards encourage
members of the public to come
forward and nominate small
businesses that they feel deserve
to be recognised.
The winner of this year's
Small Business Awards was
Honeydew-based gourmet
food retailer, The Munching
Mongoose.
The winner was awarded a
laptop and free access to Sage
One Accounting and Sage One
Payroll software as well as a
training course and seminar
of their choice. An advertising
package to the value of R250
000 was also awarded to The
Munching Mongoose.
The co-founder of this small
business, Tamryn Dicks said,
"We're overwhelmed to have
won. We love that as a result
of our service, families spend
quality time together centred
around great food. We're
humbled that our customers
enjoy this offering enough
to have nominated us for
the award." In light of this
prestigious award ceremony,
the head of Sage One, Steven
Cohen, expressed his views on
running a business.
"Like many of the businesses
we serve, we started small
and have grown beyond what
seemed unimaginable. [A] key
lesson I have learnt from the
past 26 years is that it takes
hard work and human sacrifice
to turn a dream business idea
into a way of life."
The Sandton Convention Centre
recently appointed a new general
manager, Shaun Bird, who
brings a wealth of experience in
the management of convention
facilities and hotels to the table.

the industry as a graduate in hotel
management, working in various
four- and five-star hotels in South
Africa and London.
After his return to South Africa,
Bird managed the entire food
and beverage operations of the
Woodmead Country Club and the

Quick savings tips
Nokuthula Sonile
[email protected]
Financial success lies in one's
ability to save money consistently
and diligently.
Alfred Ramosedi, African Bank
group executive in sales and
marketing said if you manage to
build a saving habit today, you
will be able to experience financial
freedom sooner.
He stated that there is no denying
the fact that there are months
where saving money seems
impossible; particularly when we
take into consideration the financial
responsibilities and monthly
payments that are required of us
and choose not to think about how
it affects our savings.
He added, "However, regardless
of the financial pressure that we
may feel come month-end, it is also
important to remember that saving
should take priority."
He mentioned that a substantial
savings account will assist in
preparing us for the future and
ensure that we are able to live
our lives as best we can when it
comes to turning our dreams and
aspirations into a reality.
"If you hope to purchase a house,
dream car, put children through
university or pursue a year of
travelling, a savings account will
assist you in attaining your dreams.
If you put off saving your money,
chances are, when trying to achieve
your dreams, you might find it
relatively harder."
If you are looking to build your
personal capital, African Banks
offers these guidelines:
• Treat debt as a separate entity
– When it comes to saving, it is
important to ensure that you treat
debt as a separate entity. If you are
looking to build up your personal
capital, ensure that you keep
your debt and savings as separate
priorities and that one does not take
preference over the other.
• Be realistic about achieving
your dreams – If you hope to
save money with the intention of
achieving a dream, it is important
to be realistic about how quickly
you can achieve it.
If you hope to pay for tertiary
education, you will need to
familiarise yourself with a
projection of how much you will
need to save per month, and for
how long.
• Save without distraction – While
splurging your savings on a new
handbag, dining room suite or pair
of shoes may seem like you're
rewarding yourself for your efforts,
it can set you back significantly.

ABOVE THE LAW
Garry Hertzberg
Last week, one of our readers wrote a
letter as a warning about employing
domestic workers without properly
screening them.
This resident had employed someone
through an agency and, after 18 months,
discovered that she had stolen valuable
items to value of R250 000 from the
house.
It is quite a common practice in South
Africa to allow domestic workers into our
homes, to have contact with our children
and gain intimate knowledge of our
family, our routines and our security. Our
reader is correct in that it is unusual to do
proper background checks and screening
for these sensitive positions. This is quite
strange for a country besieged by crime.
There is a lot of confusion regarding
the right to privacy and background
checks, and complex labour laws have
made it even more muddled. Once a
person is employed, you can’t suddenly
turn to them and force them to undergo
criminal background checks without their
permission because that would be an
unfair labour practice.
You can’t go and lift their fingerprints
off a glass and take it to the police to do a
search, that’s an invasion of privacy.
The solution is to conduct a criminal
check on any potential candidate before
you hire them.
The common belief is that you can’t
really get these things done, or that it’s too
slow, or too expensive, or that you don’t
have the right to do it.
It is not true, it can be done, a criminal
check has to be verified by using digitally
captured fingerprints which are checked
against the police database.
There are private companies which will
do this for you at a very reasonable rate of
around R200, which is a small price to pay
for peace of mind.
The process should not take longer
than 48 hours. One of these background
screening companies has said that one in
10 candidates who were screened have
criminal records, which brings us to an
important question: Shouldn’t convicted
criminals who have served their sentence
be given the chance to rebuild their lives?
On the other hand, you have a right to
know who you are inviting into your home
and a right to make an informed decision.

SA Festival of Motoring Highlights
New Tiguan aims for the top
> SEAN NURSE
T
HE year of the SUV continued this past week
when Volkswagen launched its new Tiguan to
the South African motoring media. I was there
and had an opportunity to drive the newcomer
and as I had expected, I was suitably impressed.
ȹ WHAT’S NEW?
Well, pretty much everything is new for this
model; for starters it now makes use of the brand’s
impressive MQB or Modularer Querbaukasten
(Modular Transverse Matrix) platform as seen in
the Golf and various other VW group products. It
also receives an extensive list of optional driver
assistance systems which I will elaborate on later.
ȹ THOSE LOOKS
When I pulled up to the VW Dealer Training
centre in Centurion, I was greeted by a line of
new VW SUVs which looked very much like small
Touaregs, all clad with the R-Line body kits and
sporty alloy wheels. The R-Line kit might be an
R18 000 option on these cars but it’s one worth
ticking. The cars look seriously aggressive.
The front-end features a pronounced grille,
rather angry front lights while in side proÀle, it
oozes sophistication with a strong shoulder line
stretching from the front to the rear lights. At
the rear, the theme switches back to sporty with
aggressive LED lighting and two exhaust tips.
ȹ THAT INTERIOR
The interior is typically VW with excellent tangible
quality, masterful ergonomics and the general
impression that you are in something that means
business within its segment. The new model also
features a new seat design which proved quite
comfortable on the open road. The vehicle is also
bigger inside than the outgoing model with over
600 litres of boot space and enough room inside
to seat four adults comfortably.
The interior also features a new active
information display as seen in other VW products
like the Passat, which in the Tiguan comes in the
form of a 12.3-inch screen that can be customised
from a choice of six display options depending on
driver preference.
ȹ DERIVATIVES
The Tiguan range, which goes on sale from
October 2016 onwards, will feature three 1.4 litre
turbo petrol variants, with a 2.0 litre diesel and a
2.0 litre turbo petrol set to join the range later this
year. These more powerful models will also feature
the brand's 4Motion all-wheel drive system.
The base model in the range is the 92kW/200Nm
1.4 litre featuring a six-speed manual gearbox
which proved quite economical during our 170
km drive to our lodgings with a consumption
Àgure of 7.7 litres/100km. The other models I
managed to drive on the second day both have
the same 110kW/250Nm output, although one
is a manual and the other the DSG derivative. The
DSG is certainly the better car to drive with barely
perceivable shifts and an ease of use that is really
impressive.

The new model includes

and
front
passenger airbags, a curtain airbag as well as front
seat side impact airbags. All models also come with
Electronic Stability Control, XDS differential lock and
fatigue detection (Rest Assist), which helped the
car achieve a Àve star crash rating from Euro NCAP
ȹ WHAT DO I GET?
All models feature air conditioning, electric
front and rear windows, cruise control, front fog
lights, leather multi-function steering wheel,
connectivity package (Bluetooth & USB interface)
and roof rails as standard. There is also a Àve-inch
touchscreen Radio/CD Composition Colour
system with MP3 compatibility, eight-speakers,
SD Card and AUX-in connection with two other
optional infotainment systems available to
customers.

Overall this new Tiguan is a very desirable
product, it is a car that brand desperately needed
during this period of economic uncertainty and
after the it's recent emissions scandal. I think
that we can expect to see a number of these on
local roads in the near future.

All Tiguan models come standard with a 5

THE VOLVO XC90 has been a break-out machine
for the Swedish car maker, Àlling its trophy cabinet
since its introduction. I drove one towards the end
of last year and I really enjoyed it. What I liked most
about it was the look. There is no better looking
SUV on the market, in my opinion. Now the model
that I drove was a diesel, however, the global
push towards electric cars is becoming so strong
that we now get Eskom-powered supercars,
sedans and little city cars. It makes sense for a
manufacturer to offer an electric-powered SUV
then, right?
Well, that’s exactly what arrived at our ofÀces
recently – a black Volvo XC90 T8. The T8 is the
top of the range model and what made the smile
on my face even bigger, was that the car featured
the Inscription package. It’s massive wheels and
chrome detailing contrasting against its metallic
black pants makes the car look as if it is wearing
a tailor-made tuxedo. The grille also features the
iconic arrow which has been elegantly aligned with
the diagonal slash across the grille. Other features
which I like are the T-shaped DRL lights, which are
said to resemble Thor’s Hammer.
Step inside the Volvo XC90 and you are greeted
by a clean, well-designed, driver-focused interior.
In fact, this interior is really one of the nicest that
I have been in. There are very few buttons and
they are so meticulously made. For instance, the
start/stop button is a crystal-like switch that you
turn. The same goes for the drive select button, it
looks like a piece of jewellery which you rotate
with your Ànger. I could select between dynamic,
efÀciency, comfort and off-road. As for the volume
button, that too is a neatly designed dial.
The reason why there are so few buttons in
the car is because everything is controlled via an
iPad-like touch screen which is imbedded into the
centre of the dashboard. The operating system,
known as Sensus, is much like that of a tablet
and thus quite easy to use. You swipe left or right
to access speciÀc menus. You can also drag your
Ànger from the top of the screen down to access
a drop-down menu.
There is one button which takes you back
to the home screen. Even the car’s climate
control functions are operated via the screen.
As for the instrument cluster, well that is all digital
as well and once you have the navigation activated,
the map will appear right in front of you.
Okay, so now that you know what the car looks
like, let me tell you how the electric motor and
petrol engine work together. Under the hood lies
a turbo and supercharged two-litre Drive-E petrol
unit capable of 235kW/400Nm. This motor
drives the front wheels while a 9.2 kWh Lithiumion battery pack powers a 65kW/240Nm electric
motor which drives the rear wheels. It’s easy to
charge and takes about three hours.
After some math, I worked out that the
combined power output is 300kW and 640Nm,
when the batteries are fully charged. There is
also something called a crank-integrated starter
generator which is located between the engine
and the eight-speed gearbox. This device performs
three functions.
Firstly, it’s a 34 kW starter motor which allows
the car to change seamlessly between pure
electric and hybrid driving modes. Secondly,
it acts as an electric generator to recharge the
battery pack, and thirdly, as an electric engine
booster. Volvo says that it can boost up to 150Nm.
To help you control what happens under the
skin, the XC90 T8 features a drive-select function.
This includes pure, hybrid and power as well as
an AWD – an off-road setting which gives maximum
torque to the wheels for tough conditions.
However, I wouldn’t even bother with that mode
as you’d be daft to go off-roading in this beauty.
Is it all rainbows and unicorns? Well, no, not
exactly. You see, Volvo claims a fuel consumption
Àgure of 2.1 litres/100km – a Àgure most probably
achieved in an alternative universe – as I managed
around 8.0 litres/100km over my test week. Without
assistance from the batteries, the XC90 T8 did come
across as slightly thirsty.
The plus-side to having the electric motors is
that the car, when fully charged, will be able to
travel about 30km at speeds of up to 125km/h.
Something which came in handy when I needed to
drive around town. I managed to do 27km without
the engine even switching on. Now don’t think that
I was disrupting trafÀc at some ridiculous crawl
speed – I managed to stick to the speed limits.
So what are my Ànal thoughts on the car? Well, I
love the look and the elegant interior. Unfortunately,
as impressive as the electric motor is and the
occasional beneÀts it provides, I’d walk straight
past the R1 116 100 T8 and get the XC90 D5 turbo
diesel Inscription model.

FRAME OF MIND CAN DETERMINE YOUR DRIVING
Dear Editor
Regarding Beryl Allen’s letter about Àtting
hands-free connections in all cars to make driving safer. This will only partly solve the problem
of being distracted while driving. Your emotional
state plays a big role on how well we concentrate.
If your conversation on the phone makes you angry
or happy, it will have an impact on your concentration while driving. We all experience lack of

SAVE THE CHILDREN
Dear Editor
We kill far too many people on our roads. Apart
from the pain and anguish of the parents and
relatives of those who are involved, nothing upsets
me more than seeing innocent schoolchildren being
exposed to risks on our roads because of overloaded
vehicles, some of which are not roadworthy for
scholar transport.
Mothers of the nation - pregnant women and
parents with small children drive for many and
various reasons. Remember, you are your baby’s
Àrst safety seat. All children in a motor vehicle have
to be buckled up with appropriate child restraints.
Being pregnant does not exempt you from wearing
a seatbelt while driving or as a passenger, either in
the front or the rear.
Parents must strap their kids into car seats.

NEW VEHICLE LISTINGS SHOULD BE REGULAR
Dear Editor
Just a message of appreciation for the New Car
Listing that appeared pp 6-7 of Auto Dealer, week
35, 23 August 2016, Johannesburg West Edition. Do
hope it is going to be a regular feature hence forth.
Thomas Groenewald
Just read the piece on the Ford Ranger 2.2
automatic and cannot but think why this has not
happened sooner. If you look at the ever increasing
levels of congestion in our cities, you have to ask
what the need for a manual transmission is when
you speed up only to brake less than a second
later? What’s more, the days of bakkies being seen
as nothing but workhorses are changing as more
and more buyers want the beneÀt of a loadbay
but with car-like luxuries with an auto box being
a prime example. Until now, buyers wanting the
convenience of an auto bakkie in South Africa were
limited to expensive double cabs only. As our cities
and towns continue to get clogged up, more and
more manufactures will to start to release what they
have been missing out on by not making auto boxes
available on lower-spec single and double cabs.
see what is coming from behind, actually making
this useless. The same also applies for the side
mirrors in that you are unlikely to completely see
when another car wants to overtake.
What’s more, many drivers choosing this “position” do not put on their safety belts which is illegal
and can cause serious injury in the event of an
accident. Under normal circumstances, the belts
would push you back in your seat and allow you to
exist the car with little to no injuries, whereas driving
on your back could jolt you around more severely.
Being literally a backseat driver does not score
any points on a scale of “how cool do I look”, but
rather asks why are you allowed to the drive in the
Àrst place? I am not saying you must sit bolt upright
with your knees right up to the steering wheel, but
rather take up a comfortable position with a clear
view out the front and where rear and side vision
is not obscured.
In my view, this should be a point of focus for
our trafÀc ofÀcials and should be highlighted with
the eventual aim of reducing deaths on our roads.

NOTHING “COOL” ABOUT BACKSEAT DRIVERS
Dear Editor
One thing I have noticed in recent months, is how
some drivers, mostly young people, tend to adjust
their seat as far back on the runners as possible,
and then literally drive from back the seat with
what can only be described as awful music coming from the radio. I am not sure the reasons for
these but can only speculate it has something to
do with image or “looking cool”. Fact is, driving like
this is neither as it not only looks dumb but also
dangerous. Laying almost on your back means you
cannot properly focus on the road ahead, which is
then made even more worse by some cars having
a “dipping” function for the seat.
Some drivers then compound this further by adjusting the rear view mirror so that they can hardly
Bob
TAXIS MUST TURN DOWN THE VOLUME
Dear Editor
We are constantly bombarded by reports of
pollution whether it be water or air. One type of
pollution that is very much overlooked is noise
pollution, which is most prevalent in taxis. The
passengers are blasted with sound way beyond
the national standard. Factory noise is limited to
85 decibels. I happened to measure the sound in
a taxi on the corner I live with a sound level meter.
The reading was 130 db, the equivalent of standing
next to a jet engine. What worries me is that the
taxis transporting school children do the same. We
are living with people who will be deaf or suffering
from impaired hearing when completing school.

SA Festival of Motoring Highlights
'When we arrived, we were greeted by the sound
of race cars belting down the main straight past
the new pit lane. There was a band playing and
the smell of a good old South African braai Àlled the air..'
WE recently attended the South African Festival
of Motoring which took place at the revamped
Kyalami race circuit. The gates opened on the
31st of August and closed on Sunday, the 4th of
September. We managed to get an early look at
what was on offer, and a few things got our hearts
racing. Here is our list of show stoppers from the
South African Festival of Motoring.
OverÁowing with excitement, we headed to
our Àrst appointment which was BMW and more
speciÀcally, the BMW M4 GTS. One of the most
hyped about cars at the show, the 368 kW/600
Nm GTS made its local debut on the Àrst day of
the festival. Both our editor Sean Nurse and Justin
Jacobs got to drive the car, which left them in awe
due to its track honed DNA.
The M4 GTS offers a highly exclusive driving
experience and, with its high-performance
technology and motor sport genes, is clearly focused
on track use. Production run of this special-edition
model is limited to 700 units worldwide (the 23
allocated for South Africa are already sold out).
Another BMW that left our testers drooling was
the M3 30 Jahre. With this limited edition model,
BMW M celebrates the 30th anniversary of its
benchmark-setting high-performance sports car.
A total of 30 units are available for South Africa.
As a tribute to the Àrst generation M3, the
anniversary edition “30 Years M3” is painted in an
exclusive exterior colour called Macao Blue metallic,
which once celebrated its premiere in BMW’s colour
range as a special option for the very Àrst M3.
The “30 Years M3” builds on the Competition
Package, which is optionally available on the
standard M3. It comprises an increase in engine
output by 14 kW to 331 kW.
Moving on to the Mercedes-Benz stand, a car that
stuck out was the gorgeous S63 AMG Cabriolet. The

S63 Cabriolet is another fascinating AMG dream
car from Affalterbach. Underneath that sculptured
body lurks a beast, namely a 5.5-litre V8 biturbo
engine with 430 kW and a colossal 900 Nm of
torque.
Keeping the beauty pageant going, we went to
see what Jaguar and Land Rover had on offer. While
there they unveiled the new Jaguar F-Type SVR, the
Àrst Jaguar SVR model developed to exploit the
lightweight aluminium sports car’s full potential
while retaining its inherent tractability and day-today usability. The F-Type SVR is a 300 km/h all-wheel
drive supercar with a 5.0-litre supercharged V8
developing 430 kW and 700 Nm. The 0-100 km/h
sprint is said to take just 3.5 seconds.
Land Rover unveiled their latest model, the
Range Rover Evoque convertible. We got an
exclusive look as the car just cleared customs a

few hours earlier after arriving from the UK. The
Evoque convertible enhances the desirability of the
Evoque family, taking the Land Rover brand
to a new audience of customers looking for
a unique combination of open-air luxury and
reÀnement. Land Rover designers have retained
the exterior design of the standard Evoque with
the convertible roof system open or closed.
A sophisticated fabric roof with tension-bow
architecture creates a deÀned silhouette that
remains faithful to the original design of the
vehicle, while the Z-fold mechanism folds Áush
with the rear bodywork for a sleek and uncluttered
appearance
On the Mini side, Mini South African invited Charlie
Butler-Henderson, the current MINI Challenge
champion and MINI UK brand ambassador, to
demonstrate his skill in a MINI Challenge race car.
Visitors could sign up for some hot laps with the
racing driver for free.
All in all, it was a great event and we here
at Autodealer enjoyed our time there. We hope
to see more events like this Àlling our motoring
calendar soon.

Tantalising treats for all
Fire up the grill!
We’d love to keep Banchan our own dirty little secret, but it’s simply too good not to
share! This Korean restaurant that’s just popped up in the hot foodie district of Parkmore
boasts a simple yet sleek interior along with a menu that combines authentic and fusion
K-town dishes. Start off with the nachos layered with grilled kimchi, pork belly pieces,
avocado, melted Cheddar and mozzarella, then move on to the marinated duck grilled
Korean-style, which you’ll be able to cook yourself … that’s right, the tables are fully
equipped with grills and extractor fans (how cool is that?)! If you’ve got room for dessert
at the end of your meal (it’s unlikely – the portions are huge!), be sure to try the Korean
pancakes filled with sugar and peanuts … the ultimate decadence! Corner of 10th
Street and Elizabeth Avenue, Parkmore. Details: 072-913-3269

Glamorously gourmet
Oysters and bubbly, anyone? Fine dining establishment Kream has just opened the
doors to its second restaurant in Mall of Africa … and it’s even more lavish and downright
delicious than its Pretoria sister (just when you thought it couldn’t get any better!). Perfect
for a leisurely lunch or a romantic dinner, this oh-so-elegant restaurant is the epitome of
luxurious. Take a seat at a table overlooking the piazza downstairs or get comfortable on a
plush couch up top … whatever you choose, be sure you try the perfectly cooked chalmar
fillet or seared tuna steak. Then end your meal on a sweet note with the lip-smacking
vanilla crème brûlée ... totally delish! Mall of Africa, Magwa Crescent, Midrand. Details: 010591-0023
Holy guacamole!
Asian persuasion
The next time those South of the Border
cravings strike, head straight to La Santa
Muerte! Our new fave taco, burrito and
guacamole slinging spot, this fresh and
vibrant Mexican joint offers an extensive
menu to ensure there’s something for
everyone. While vegetarians munch
on corn on the cob topped with lime
sour cream and chilli salt, meat lovers
can tuck into pulled pork served with
orange chipotle sauce and aioli. For the
chocoholics, there’s something extra
special … deep-fried churros dusted in
cinnamon and sugar then dunked in chilli
chocolate (it’s as heavenly as it sounds).
The restaurant also serves the best sangria
– you’ll want to dive into it head first! 7th
Street, Melville. Details: 076-609-0383
From the outside it may not look like
anything special, but don’t be fooled
… Momo Baohaus has got it all – from
piping hot vegetarian potstickers to
crunchy tempura prawn baos. Needless
to say, it’s our new go-to to chow
down on the best Asian tapas in town!
Whether you feel like brunching on dim
sum, picking up super-fresh sushi for
lunch or grabbing your chopsticks late
at night, this unpretentious and trendy
spot is a must-visit … you can even
take your own booze (it’s not licensed
so there’s no corkage fee) – what more
could you ask for? Just be sure to book
soon … it’s already growing ridiculously
popular! 139 Greenway, Greenside.

Cosmopolitan chic
Get ready to excite your taste buds and breathe in the big city life at The Cosmopolitan
Bar! Opened by Cube Tasting Kitchen’s head chef, this ultrachic spot, tucked away in the
historical and recently revamped Cosmopolitan Hotel, is perfect for a social yet supersophisticated meal. Pull up a stool at the wooden lion-carved bar and get ready to delight
your senses with fine wine, great gin and world-class whisky paired with fine dining pub
grub (read: the furthest thing from your average pub food). A plate of pork hock, kassler
and sausage complemented by Moroccan spices, white fish ceviche served with a coconut
milk jelly and rice pudding, and beer-braised shin alongside roast baby onions, yams and
dark beer infusion jus are just a few of the exquisite dishes on offer (drool!). We suggest
ordering a few plates to share to get a taste of everything … ‘if not, why not?’, they say! 24
Albrecht Street, Maboneng. Details: 082-831-4217
Bring on the braai!
Something meaty
Calling all carnivores! Top-notch butchery Country Meat has
just expanded its Fourways shop into a fully-fledged South
African-style eatery … get ready to sink your teeth into only
the best meat at The Braai Room! No, it’s not what you’re
thinking … the menu consists of way more than just boerie
rolls and steak. The restaurant also dishes up bacon-wrapped
oopsies, crumbed pork nuggets, super-stacked burgers, the
most delicious lamb potjie and loads more. Pair your favourite
meaty indulgence with one of the gluten-free beers and you’ve
got one lekker feast! Just a mild warning … the portions are
gigantic, so be sure to arrive with an empty tummy. Cnr of Forest
Road and Sunset Avenue, Fourways. Details: 011-465-0664
Summer is just around the corner so it’s time to dust
off the faithful braai and start planning for some
yummy alfresco meals. With Jamie Purviance’s
Weber Mediterranean Best Recipes for your
Braai you don’t have to rely on simply chucking
a chop on the grill. With very little effort you can
dish up something deliciously glam. If you fancy
fish, try yellowtail with orange, fennel and parsley
gremolata or scallops with Italian salsa verde.
Meat lovers can tuck into Bistecca alla Fiorentina
over rocket with shaved Parmesan. When it
comes to desserts, think hot plums with brandyallspice butter or roasted oranges with ouzo over
ice cream – wow! The book includes braaiing
fundamentals, essential tools and braai time
guides. A must-have for fans of outdoor eating.

Action-packed reads
Kesterly-on-Sea is full of secrets – some dark, some shameful and one deadly. In
Susan Lewis’s The Moment She Left, Andee is an ex-detective whose marriage
is breaking up, so when a young woman disappears without trace, she throws
herself into the search. Rowzee Cayne, who is much-loved by the people of
the town, has just discovered she’s terminally ill and decides not to burden
her family and friends with the bad news. Andee and Rowzee are to discover
that their journeys will help them uncover a secret – one that will affect them
more than they could ever imagine. Century, R230. • Unemployed economics
graduate, Leon Jacobs rescues Russian heiress Sophia Popova during a
scuba dive in the Red Sea. He then joins Sophia’s father’s corrupt
investment bank in London, but soon finds he’s out of his depth in the
syndicated crime world of Bogdan Popov, famous for the ways he gets rid
of competitors. Then, in Louis Wiid’s Submerged, an ex-Mitchells Plain
gangster has to leave his peaceful West Coast village and mobilise
his gang to help Leon stop the maniacal Russian. Staging Post, R220. •
In the town of Midnight, Texas, weapons are flying off the shelves of the
local pawnshop. They’re being used in sudden, dramatic suicides at the
town’s main crossroads. In Night Shift by Charlaine Harris, the best person
to figure out what’s happening is the vampire Lemuel. While translating
mysterious texts he discovers the reason why witches and werewolves, killers
and psychics have been drawn to Midnight. Now they must come together
to stop the bloodshed, because if all hell breaks loose it will put the secretive
town on the map – where no one wants to be. Orion, R365.
Local muso
Matthew Mole is finally back with his
hugely anticipated second album Run!
This is after the rather crazy success of
his first album, which grabbed him the
number one spot on iTunes – he’s the only
South African artist to have ever achieved
that! Thankfully his new release stays true
to the winning elements of the first with
a deep personal touch to each track. The
lyrics will resonate with diehard Mole fans
and probably even entice a new audience
too! Don’t miss out on Running After You
and Dreams and Heartache which are
without a doubt our favourite tracks. Just
the thing to throw on for a chilled day by
the pool! Available on iTunes.
Heartbreakingly beautiful
The Light Between Oceans transports us to post World War
I Western Australia, where we meet a beautiful young couple
(Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander). The happily married
pair – who live in an old lighthouse – make a startling discovery
when they notice a lifeboat drifting to shore. Inside they discover
a wailing baby girl and a dead body. They decide to raise the
child as their own, but this is a choice that leads to absolutely
devastating consequences as years later, they encounter their
daughter’s biological mother (Rachael Weiz). In cinemas now.

Skye Quadling (24) and Victoria
Wigzell (26) are passionate artists
who will display and sell a unique
and delicious form of art, in
conjunction with Stevenson Art
Gallery, at the FNB Joburg Art
Fair at the Sandton Convention
Centre on 8 September.
The team, who refer to
themselves as ‘Koeks’, are experts
in the field of art. Quadling studied
an honours degree in fine art at the
University of the Witwatersrand
and Wigzell completed a master’s
degree in public art at Ecav in
Switzerland.
They have put their adventurous
and creative minds together to
come up with an interesting
concept. Quadling explained,
“We make edible versions of your
favorite artworks. We make sense
of art by giving it a sense of taste.”
The first piece is based on Damien
Hirst’s The Physical Impossibility
of Death in the Mind of Someone
Living.
Wigzell and Quadling said that
their interpretation of the piece is
an edible, green sweet made with
jelly and a white chocolate shark.
The flavours of this treat are just
as unique as their artistic works as
they mix the flavours of chocolate,
bubblegum, mint and coconut.
Wigzell added that the formation
of these edible pieces has ‘become
an artwork’ and said that the next
piece they plan on making is
inspired by local artist, Serge Alain
Nitegeka. She highlighted, “The
knowledge to make anything and
everything is out there. Artists can
use anything they want because
they are so free.”
Quadling said that she is
inspired by art because it allows
her to find a positive space where
she can think about things. She
passionately added, “We learn
new things from each other as a
team and each project teaches us
something fresh and different.
There is such freedom in the way
we think.”
Wigzell said that her studies in
Switzerland introduced her to a
word that reminds her of the freespirited work that she does with
her art partner.
“Bricolage is a term used to
describe something that is done
spontaneously by someone who
grasps an opportunity and need not
be an expert. Example, we are not
chefs, but we still make delicious
art.”

The Sandton Chronicle asked pre-primary pupils of FasTracKids Parkmore
which school rule they disliked the most and here is what they had to say...
Not being able
to run because I
run very fast.
I don’t like not
being able
to scream at

Being quiet is

A mobile zoo visit
Pieter Dempsey
[email protected]
Junior Colleges Tiny Town in Sandton
received a visit from a mobile zoo where the
children were educated on selecting suitable
house pets.
Fanie Barnardt of the mobile zoo said the
zoo was a fun learning experience where
children learnt and interacted with different
animals.
“They learn where the animals come from,
their lifespan and their habits and behaviours.
All the animals are rescues and people do not
always realise that the animals they buy at
pet shops are not always suited as pets,” said
Barnardt.
The mobile zoo brought a range of exotic
animals, some of which are not always
suitable as pets, for the children to see and
interact with under supervision. Some of
the animals included chinchillas, tenrecs,
hedgehogs, marmoset monkeys, bearded
dragons, snakes and birds.

Scarlet Howard, Lethabo Moeti, Sarah Degener, Leah Baker and Jonty Mare hold a
splippery long snake.
A pupil of Redhill School in Morningside,
Boitumelo Phaho, shone bright at
the recent Philip H. Moore Music
Competition as a pianist.
The competition aimed to encourage,
support and uplift classically trained
music students from diverse cultures and
backgrounds up to and including 25 years
of age in solo performances.
The adjudicators this year were Marian
Friedman, Wessel van Wyk, Ronelle
Bosman, Elize Kruger, Tessa Rhoodie and
Waldo Weyer.
The final gala evening adjudicators
were Jetty van Rensburg, John Roos,
Carel Henn and Tinus Botha, who are all
well-known and respected in the classical
music world.
Phaho made her piano teacher, Dr Nita
Wolff exceptionally proud as she was the
category winner in the competition.
Wolff explained, “They [pupils] have to
prepare for three rounds. This competiton
started at the end of July and only just
finished this Saturday [27 August]. After
the first round, Phaho was selected to go
through to the second round and they only
chose two finalists.”
She added that the young talents then
go through to the gala evening.
“At the final evening, Phaho played
Der Schmetterling und die Blume [The
butterfly and the flower] by Nicolai
Podgornov and Witches’ Dance by
Theodor Kullak.
Congratulations to this nine-year-old
little star who is justly rewarded for her
hard work by maintaining a rigorous daily
practising schedule.”

Ashlinn Gray releases her new single
Racine Edwardes
[email protected]
Move over Taylor Swift, 22 is out and
we’re all feeling Nineteen.
Independent musician, Ashlinn Gray, is
tackling the music industry with only the
help of a few industry friends and is on a
productive path that has led her to release
her newest single, Nineteen.
Released on 2 September, Gray told
Sandton Chronicle a little more about the
new song she’s excited for the world to
hear, in a short Q&A.
Q. What does Nineteen mean to you?
A. Nineteen is about making the most of a
seemingly insignificant year and not leaving
the kid inside behind. I’ve never looked
forward to the age of 19 and I realised it
was because society doesn’t have any
expectations of that year which made it
seem so insignificant.
So as a challenge to myself, I wanted to
make it a year where I really chased my
dreams, with childlike faith. Sometimes we
have to chase our dreams the way we used
to chase paper planes.
Q. Who did you work with on the song?
A. I worked with Jake Odendaal and
Simeon Kriel on the songwriting and Jake
also produced the song.
Q. Did the lyrics and melody come easy?
A. The verses and bridge came really easy
but we really battled with finding the right
chorus melody. I think we went through five
versions till we reached the one you’ll hear
on the track. It’s hard work, but in my mind
it was worth it.
Q. What response do you hope to get from
fans?
A. I really hope they enjoy this pop side
of my music. Following your dreams and
making the most of insignificant years
is something everyone can relate to.
Everyone can relate to feeling insignificant,
and I really hope whoever listens to it, is
encouraged to start believing in the dreams
inside of them and go for it.
Ashlinn Gray is ecstatic to see the
response to her new song, Nineteen.

Above and beyond...
Chronicle Reporter
[email protected]
One of the many highlights at the
2016 Land Rover Africa Cup polo
tournament at Inanda Club will
be the debut of Team Above and
Beyond.
The team consists of two polo
veterans and two up-and-coming
development players who will
participate in a weekend of
thrilling horsemanship from 17 to
18 September.
In the team, and playing in their
first international tournament, are
development players Thokosane
Zondo and Lucky Nsingo. Both
were from a selection of six
players who were put through their
paces at the Inanda Development
Cup earlier this year.
After demonstrating their talent
on the field and passion for the
sport, Zondo and Nsingo were
voted as the most valuable players
of the tournament. To further aid
their development, Land Rover
sponsored both of them with a full
complement of new polo gear for
the upcoming tournament.
Joining Zondo and Nsingo
are seasoned polo pros, Terence
Spilsbury and Richard Pohl. Both
have a love for the sport and
horses, and boast extensive playing
experience. Additionally, Pohl will
contribute his valuable experience
from successes he has had at local
tournaments and in representing
South Africa at international level.
“These aspiring polo aces have
made it into Team Above and
Beyond on their own merit through
hard work and dedication,” said
Craig James, polo manager at the
Inanda Club.
“With Terence and Richard,
Thokozane and Lucky will have

With the Olympic Games still
fresh in the minds of South
Africans, the Wanderers Athletics
Club, Asics Athletics Shoes
South Africa and The Sweat Shop
decided to make a difference in
the lives of a few well-deserving
athletes of Marlboro Gardens
Combined School.
Dylan Burgess, chairman of
the Wanderers Athletics Club
explained, “Today is really just
about giving back. I met these
kids at one of our races, and one
of the 11-year-old’s beat me in a
5km race, running in slippers. I
hunted down their coach, Marco
[Bucarizza] and we decided to get
these young athletes some proper
running gear.”
Bucarizza, coach for the
school’s long distance athletics
team expressed his gratitude on
receiving the generous donation.
“Growing up as an athlete, I’ve
always had an affinity towards
being an educator and a trainer,”
he said. “I’ve been pushing my
pupils to work hard and it has
paid off. These athletes are all
rather new to the sport, and the
idea of long distance running was
slow to pick up, but now we have
a really strong team, with some
of our athletes even competing
in the national championships in
September.”
Katlego Bogale, a Grade 6 long
distance runner of the school who
will be competing in the South
African Championships in George
was absolutely ecstatic about his
new running shoes. “With these
new shoes I might have a chance
to win,” said Bogale.
The Wanderers Athletics Club teamed up with Asics and The Sweatshop in Dunkeld to kit young athletes
out with new running shoes.

Proteas wicket-keeper batsman, Quinton
de Kock, has described his debut as an
opener in the second Sunfoil Test match
against New Zealand in Centurion as a
proud moment in his career.
De Kock, a King Edward VII School
(KES) old boy, volunteered to move to
the top of the order after Dean Elgar got
injured – and batted brilliantly on a tough
pitch which assisted seam and swing
bowling.
He and Stephen Cook, another KES old
boy, put on only the third 100-run opening
partnership before lunch for South Africa.
The pair displayed the perfect balancing
act of aggression and defence.
“Opening the batting in Test cricket is
an underrated job,” he admitted after the
opening day.
“It’s a different level of test – the
different skills that you face aren’t the
same as opening the batting in one-day
and T20 cricket. With the ball moving
around a lot it tests out your technique and
patience. I learnt a little bit about myself
today, which is nice going forward – but I
think it’s more [suited to] Dean [Elgar] and
Stephen [Cook]. I’ll stay there at six and
seven,” he quipped.
De Kock said his innings gave him

confidence in his technique and tested
him to adapt and restyle his naturally
aggressive game plan. “I learnt where to be
tight and how to play certain balls,” he said
of his 82 off 114 balls, which included 79
dot balls.
The 23-year-old wicket-keeper learnt his
cricket at KES, which has produced many
South African cricket greats including
Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie. He
also played club cricket at Old Eds where
he hit 98 runs off 74 balls to help them win
the premier league in 2009.
De Kock’s conversion rate in One Day
Internationals (ODI) is also outstanding. In
the 55 ODIs he has played, De Kock has
passed 50 on 15 occasions, and gone on to
three figures 10 times, giving him a 66.6
percent conversion rate.
“... I think it’s the most that I have left
the ball in my professional career, to be
honest,” he said of his Centurion knock.
“I’m proud of myself for doing that, I
don’t normally do that. It’s nice to know
that I can do that.”
Following his 82 in the first innings,
De Kock also became the first South
African wicket-keeper to score two halfcenturies in the same Test. For his sterling
contributions, De Kock earned the Man
of the Match award after the Proteas beat
New Zealand by 204 runs to win the twomatch test series.
From being a sports writer and editor at The
Daily Voice newspaper to being one of the
most sought-after presenters in the country,
Julia Stuart is fast-becoming a household
name in the world of football.
She is not only a beauty but has the brains
to back it all up with a degree in film and
media from the University of Cape Town as
well as honours in media theory.
Stuart, affectionately known as Jules,
started out in print media, was trained at
Independent Newspaper headquarters in
Ireland, and was the former sports editor of
The Daily Voice newspaper at the age of 22,
becoming the first female sports editor in
the country.
After seven years with the newspaper, she
took a different route and accepted a job as
a sports presenter at eNews Channel Africa.
She admitted that the transition from
print to broadcasting was a challenge. “It is
intimidating being in front of a camera, and
when I watch those first few tapes of mine
from eNCA, It’s hard to watch yourself on
TV.
“It was such a big risk because I took a
big pay-cut, but I just thought it’s time to
move and challenge myself. I had been at
the newspaper for so long.”
Despite football being a male-dominated
sport, Stuart praised the female sports
presenters that came before her for laying
the groundwork for the next generation.
“Now there are more female presenters in
sports than ever before. The females who
were before us did a really good job in
paving a way for us.”
Having joined SuperSport just over a year
ago, Stuart now has made massive strides at
the inter-continental broadcaster and she is
not done yet.
Being one of the many voices on
SuperSport Blitz, she also is seen around
the country during local football matches
providing on-field interviews before and
after matches and recently joined the
Monday Night Football team discussing all
things Barclays Premier League.
A huge Asernal fan, Stuart was born in
Mitchells Plain on the Cape Flats outside
Cape Town and is now a Sandton resident.
The Supersport presenter recently visited
Julia Stuart covers the 2016 UEFA
European Championships in France.
France to cover the European Football
Championship showpiece in the TV show
French Connection.
As the demand for female personalities
in sport continues to grow, Stuart has
encouraged young women interested in
becoming sports presenters to be prepared
to work because a pretty face will only get
them so far. “Rejection is part of the job,
get used to it and don’t stop knocking on
those doors,” she advised.
