She was born on August 26, 1910 and was baptized the following day as Agnes Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, a date she considered her ‘true birthday’. She received her First Communion when she was five and a half. Raised in a devoutly Catholic family, her father was an entrepreneur by profession. Her mother had a spiritual and religious bent of mind and was active participant in the local church activities. Sudden and tragic death of her father when she was eight years old left young Agnes disheartened. Despite facing financial crisis, Dranafile did not compromise on the upbringing of her children and raised them with utmost love, care and affection. Over the years, young Agnes grew extremely close to her mother. It was Dranafile’s firm belief and religious attitude that greatly influenced Agnes character and future vocation. A pious and compassionate woman, she instilled in Agnes a deep commitment to charity, which was further affirmed by her involvement in the Jesuit parish of the Sacred Heart. KURNOOL VANI - SEPTEMBER 2016 1 Religious Calling As Agnes turned 18, she found her true calling as a nun and left home for good to enroll herself at the Institute of the Blessed Mary Virgin, also called Sisters of Loreto, in Ireland. It was there that she first received the name Sister Mary Teresa after St Therese of Lisieux. After a year of training, Sister Mary Teresa came to India in 1929 and initiated her novitiate in Darjeeling, West Bengal, as a teacher at St Teresa’s School. She learned the local language of the state, Bengali. Sister Teresa took her first religious vows in May 1931. Thereafter, she was assigned duty at the Loreto Entally community of Calcutta and taught at St Mary’s School. Six years later, on May 24, 1937, she took her Final Profession of Vows and with that acquired the name, which the world recognizes her with today, Mother Teresa. The next twenty years of her life, Mother Teresa dedicated to serving as a teacher at the St Mary’s School, graduating to the post of the principal in 1944. Within the walls of the convent, Mother Teresa was known for her love, kindness, compassion and generosity. Her unflinching commitment to serving the society and mankind was greatly recognized by students and teachers. However, just as much Mother Teresa enjoyed teaching young girls, she was greatly disturbed by the poverty and misery that was prevalent in Calcutta. Call within a Call Little did she know that the journey from Calcutta to Darjeeling made by Mother Teresa for her yearly retreat, on September 10, 1946 would transform her life completely. She experienced a call within a call - a call from the Almighty to fulfill His heartfelt desire of serving the ‘poorest of the poor’. Mother Teresa explained the experience as an order from Him, which she could not fail on any condition as it would mean breaking the faith. He asked Mother Teresa to establish a new religious community, Missionaries of Charity Sisters, which would be dedicated to serving the ‘poorest of the poor’. The community would work in the slums of Calcutta and help the poorest and sick people. Since Mother Teresa had taken a vow of obedience, leaving the convent without official permission was impossible. For nearly two years, she lobbied for initiating the new religious community, which brought favourable result in the January of 1948 as she received a final approval from the local Archbishop Ferdinand Périer to pursue the new calling. On August 17, 1948, clad in a white blue-bordered saree, Mother Teresa walked past the gate of the convent, which had been her habitat for almost two decades, to enter the world of poor, a world that needed her, a world which He wanted her to serve, a world she knew of as her own! Gaining Indian citizenship, Mother Teresa travelled all the way to Patna, Bihar to gain medical training at the Medical Mission Sisters. After 2 KURNOOL VANI - SEPTEMBER 2016 completing her short course, Mother Teresa returned to Calcutta and found her temporary lodging at Little Sisters of the Poor. Her first outing was on December 21,1948 to help the people in the slums. Her main mission was to serve Him by helping the ‘unwanted, unloved, and uncared’. From then on, Mother Teresa reached out to the poor and needy each day, fulfilling His desire to radiate love, kindness and Compassion. Starting off all alone, Mother Teresa was soon joined by voluntary helpers, most of which were former students and teachers, who accompanied her in her mission to fulfil His vision. With time, financial help also came in. Mother Teresa then started an open air school and soon established a home for the dying and destitute in a dilapidated home, which she convinced the government to donate to her. October 7, 1950 was historic day in the life of Mother Teresa; she finally received permission by the Vatican to start the congregation that eventually came to be known as Missionaries of Charity. Starting off with merely 13 members, the Missionaries of Charity went on to become one of the most significant and recognized congregations in the world. As the ranks of congregation raised and financial aid came in easily, Mother Teresa expanded her scope for charitable activities exponentially. In 1952, she inaugurated the first Home for the Dying, where people brought to this home received medical help and accorded the opportunity to die with dignity. Adhering to the different faith that people came in from, all who died were given their last ceremonies according to the religion they followed, thus dying a death of dignity. The next step was initiating a home for those suffering from Hansen’s disease, commonly known as leprosy. The home was called Shanti Nagar. Additionally, several clinics were formed in the city of Calcutta which provided medication, bandage and food to those suffering from leprosy. In 1955, Mother Teresa opened a home for the orphans and homeless youths. She named it as Nirmala Shishu Bhavan, or the Children’s Home of the Immaculate Heart. What started as a small effort soon grew in size and number, attracting recruits and financial help. By 1960, Missionaries of Charity had opened several hospices, orphanages and leper houses all over India. Meanwhile, in 1963, Missionaries of Charity Brothers was founded. T he main aim behind the inauguration of Missionaries of Charity Brother was to better respond to the physical and spiritual needs of the poor. Furthermore, in 1976, a contemplative branch of the sisters was opened. Two years later, a contemplative brothers’ branch was inaugurated. In 1981, she began the Corpus Christi Movement for Priests and in 1984 the Missionaries of Charity Fathers was initiated. The initiation of the same was to combine the vocational aim of Missionaries of charity with the resource of ministerial priesthood. Mother Teresa, then, formed the Co-Workers of Mother Teresa, the Sick and Suffering KURNOOL VANI - SEPTEMBER 2016 3 Co-Workers, and the Lay Missionaries of Charity. Her International Pursuits The congregation, which was limited to India, opened its first house outside India in Venezuela In 1965 with five sisters. However, this was just the beginning, as many more houses came up in Rome, Tanzania and Austria. By 1970s, the order had reached several countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and United States. In 1982, Mother Teresa rescued almost 37 children who were trapped in a front line hospital in Beirut. With the help of a few Red Cross volunteers, she crossed the war zone to reach the devastated hospital and evacuate young patients. Missionaries of Charity which was rejected by the Communist countries earlier, found an acceptance in the 1980s. Ever since it attained permission, the congregation initiated a dozen of projects. She helped the earthquake victims of Armenia, the famished folks of Ethiopia and the radiation-caused victims of Chernobyl. The first Missionaries of Charity home in the United States was established in the South Bronx, New York. By 1984, it had 19 establishments all over the country. In 1991, Mother Teresa returned to her homeland for the first time since 1937 and opened a Missionaries of Charity Brothers home in Tirana, Albania. By 1997, Missionaries of Charity had almost 4000 sisters working in 610 foundations, in 450 centres in 123 countries across the SIX continents. The congregation had several hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens, children’s and family counselling programs, personal helpers, orphanages, and schools functioning under it. Death & Legacy Mother Teresa’s health started declining in the 1980s. The first instance of the same was seen when she suffered heart attack while visiting Pope John Paul II in Rome in 1983. For the next decade, Mother Teresa constantly faced health issues. Cardiac problems seemed to live by her, as she experienced no respite even after heart surgery. Her declining health led her to step down as the head of the order on March 13, 1997. Her last visit abroad was to Rome, when she visited Pope John Paul II for the second time. Upon returning to Calcutta, Mother Teresa spent her last few days receiving visitors and instructing sisters. The greatly compassionate soul left for the heavenly abode on September 5, 1997. Her death was mourned by the world over. In 2003, Mother Teresa was beautified by Pope John Paul II at St Peter’s Basilica, in Vatican City. Since then, she has been known as Blessed Mother Teresa. Along with Blessed Pope John Paul II, the Church designated Blessed Teresa of Calcutta as the patron saint of the World Youth Day. 4 KURNOOL VANI - SEPTEMBER 2016 BISHOP’S PROGRAMME SEPTEMBER - 2016 Thu Sept 01-30 Mission Tour to Europe. Our Bishop has announced Scholarships for Degree students! He has been giving scholarship for every imaginable course of study until last year. However, because of the present financial concerns, he had cautioned that scholarships for degree might not be possible this year. Yet he has consented to give financial assistance for those studying degree also please note that September 20 is the last and final date for placing applications for this scholarship. So kindly ask the beneficiaries to hurry up! 2. Our Parish Priests Have Done Well: DESK received 549 applications from 47 parishes for Bishop Johannes Intermediate Scholarships. We hurried up with the scrutiny of these applications to know how much money would be needed. Depending on that, the possibility of giving degree scholarships could be decided. Yet DESK accepted applications until August 7, beyond the last date of July 31. We verified them on a war footing! As soon as each application came in, we scrutinized it and informed the applicant if that application lacked something. On 7 August, DESK informed the Parish Priests the details of their applicants through WhatsApp, messages and emails. DESK later went on a rectification spree until August 24 noon to cover all the parishes that had applied for Scholarships. The same evening DESK submitted to the Bishop the names of the beneficiaries along with the amount needed. Then our good Bishop gave us the happy news that he is giving Degree Scholarships as well. DESK may have displeased some students, as we could not sanction their scholarships. However, we made every effort and even went to their parishes, but they did not rectify. Now that the whole process is over, they are waking up sad! KURNOOL VANI - SEPTEMBER 2016 15 3. Poor Catholics? We Are For Them: Please remember that our Institutions should help our poor Catholics. Our General Body Meeting on July 9 requested the Director to visit institutions, even if DESK students were not there. Therefore, he will visit the institutions on a regular basis. If our Catholics have any problem in our schools or boardings, we request the Parish Priests to please bring them to the notice of DESK! We are happy to state that all the issues reported to us so far have been resolved! 4. Please, Do It Urgently: Government of India has brought out a 243 page new “National Educational Policy” (NEP) and has asked for public opinion. According to Fr. Amal Raj SJ, Vice Chairperson of Telugu Catholic Bishops Conference’s Commission for Education and Provincial of Hyderabad Province, “It is a document which looks most alluring, but it is most deceptive and disastrous. It is targeted against minority!” The TCBC, the Andhra Jesuits and other experts have studied the document in depth. They have highlighted various points that are detrimental to our interests and given suggestions. Therefore, TCBC strongly requests all to highlight our concerns with our signatures. These will be forwarded to the government. So very soon all Parishes and Educational Institutions will receive a format. Please kindly get the signatures of all people, parishioners, students, staff and public regardless of their caste and creed. The more people sign it, the better it is! 5. TCBC Commission for Education Conducts Executive Meeting: TCBC Commission for Education conducted its Executive Meeting at Hyderabad on August 26. Speaking on the occasion Archbishop Thumma Bala of Hyderabad said, “Some educational institutions have no sympathy for poor Catholics. Hence they have become our critics”, he deplored. As the institution is a part of the parish, it should sympathetically educate Catholic Children of the area. “Or else, why are we running the institution?” he questioned. Archbishop Mallavarapu cautioned, “We want to claim minority rights, but we do not promote the education of minority students. Thus we alienate our Christian Community,” he added. Keep it with us, do not alienate them, he exhorted. - (Fr George Varghese Cherayil, Director- DESK) 16 KURNOOL VANI - SEPTEMBER 2016 NEWS FROM kurnool diocese social service society (kdsss) 1. Eight Leadership Lessons from Pope Francis: I. Reach out to non-customers: Peter Drucker famously noted that every organization has more non-customers than customers, and that you can learn more from the people who aren’t buying your product than from those who are. At 1.2 billion adherents, the Catholic Church has what you might call a huge customer base, but Francis makes sure to reach out to non-Catholics as well, for instance by declaring that God has redeemed all of us, not just Catholics.”That simple leadership tenet may be the best way to increase market share,” Krames says. II. Embrace risk: When Francis was young, he became very ill, and the nun who tended him disobeyed the doctor’s instructions and tripled his dose of antibiotics, because she knew from experience that without that higher dose he would die. “He uses that as an example of living on the frontier,” Krames says. You can’t be an effective leader if you’re always playing it safe, he adds. “Living on the frontier is something the pope has to do every day.” III. Reinvent your organization: “Don’t change—reinvent!” Krames advises. “Pope Francis is a fearless reformer. He has taken on just about every faction of the Catholic 26 KURNOOL VANI - SEPTEMBER 2016 Church in order to make it a more inclusive religion.” The best leaders do the same, he adds. “They do not fear change—they know when changing a few things is not enough. They reinvent their organizations in an ever-changing global marketplace.” IV. Be patient: Though reinvention is essential, “Authentic change doesn’t take weeks or months, it takes years,” Krames says. Francis has shown by his timing that he understands this, Krames adds. “For example, it was almost his one-year anniversary before he reportedly commented that divorced and remarried people could receive Holy Communion.” He knows that such paradigm changes can happen only over the long term, Krames says. V. Get in the field: “Francis hates any members of the clergy who sit in offices and push paper,” Krames says. As a bishop in Buenos Aires, Jorge Mario Bergoglio (as he was then), would dress as a plain priest and go out at night to talk with people. “When he became pope he told one of his archbishops, ‘I can’t do that anymore, so you’re going to do it for me.’ He doesn’t want a pristine church, he wants a church that’s going out in the streets to find people and help them.” Likewise, Francis famously chose not to move into the papal apartments but to remain in a guest suite at the Vatican, “to live in community with others,” according to a Vatican representative. In the same way, the most effective business leaders are those who keep in touch with as many constituents as they can. Delegating is a necessary part of leadership, but don’t hand off all contact with lower-level employees or customers. Otherwise, you may find yourself isolated and out of touch. VI. Listen to diverse voices: It’s much too easy for business leaders to surround themselves with like-minded advisors and leave it at that, Krames says. While that can be comfortable and efficient, it will tend to reinforce the status quo, which is not good for any organization over time. “What the pope has done to avoid being insular is create the Vatican Eight [V8],” Krames says. That’s a group of advisors including cardinals from the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australia, as well as Europe, plus one Vatican official. “To me, it’s his board of directors,” Krames says. “They’re from all over the world, and they consult with him to help him make decisions. He wants to get other people’s opinions.” VII. Put the organization’s goals above your own.: “The qualities that help send people to the top of organizations fly in the face of humility,” Krames says. “They’re full of confidence and bravado, and these are not terms Pope Francis approves of in a leader.” In the long run, though, setting your organization’s goals above your own will build a more powerful organization and benefit you as its leader. Krames says that’s what Bergoglio did in 2005, when he was the only strong contender against Joseph KURNOOL VANI - SEPTEMBER 2016 27 Ratzinger to become pope after the death of John Paul II. Through the successive ballots papal elections often require, Bergoglio reportedly encouraged his supporters to vote for Ratzinger instead of fighting it out. “He decided that would be bad, because it would have taken extra days to decide, and he didn’t think that was good for the church,” Krames says. (Ratzinger became Pope Benedict XVI but resigned in 2013 due to ill health. VIII. Lead by example:As Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Bergoglio recruited priests to go into the city’s most dangerous slums, the villas miserias. In these places, the collar does not offer much protection; priests have been kidnapped, tortured and murdered. Still, Bergoglio often showed up unannounced to drink tea with parishioners and to support local priests. And in 2009, when one of his priests received a death threat for having spoken out against drugs in one of the villas, Bergoglio walked the streets, providing himself as a target and a dare for anyone wanting to retaliate. “They were never bothered again,” Like this post? Pope Francis’ message for Rio Olympics: ‘fight the good fight’: Pope Francis delivered a message for the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro at his Wednesday General Audience. I would like to send an especially warm greeting to the Brazilian people, in particular to the city of Rio de Janeiro, which is hosting the athletes and passionate fans from all over the world on the occasion of the Olympics. In a world thirsting for peace, tolerance, and reconciliation, I hope that the spirit of the Olympic Games inspires all – participants and spectators – to ”fight the good fight” and finish the race together (cf. 2 Tim 4,7-8), desiring to obtain as a prize, not a medal, but something much more precious: the construction of a civilization in which solidarity reigns and is based upon the recognition that we are all members of the same human family, regardless of the differences of culture, skin color, or religion. And for all Brazilians, who with their joy and characteristic hospitality have organized the ‘Feast of Sport’, I hope that this will be an opportunity to overcome difficult moments and commit themselves to working as a team to build a more just and safe country, betting all on a future full of hope and joy. May God bless you all! 3. Practicing forgiveness is our ‘direct route’ to heaven, Pope says: The path to heaven is through forgiveness and pardon of those who have offended us, just as we have received salvation through the love and forgiveness of the Father, Pope Francis said today in Assisi.”Today I would like, before all else, to recall the words that, according to an ancient tradition, Saint Francis spoke in this very place, in the presence of all the townsfolk and bishops: ‘I want to send you all to heaven!’. “Forgiveness – 28 KURNOOL VANI - SEPTEMBER 2016 pardon – is surely our direct route to that place in heaven. Here at the Porziuncola everything speaks to us of pardon! What a great gift the Lord has given us in teaching us to forgive and in this way to touch the Father’s mercy!” Pope Francis reflected on the parable in Matthew 18:21-35, where the servant who, after having been forgiven of a large debt by his master, in turn does not forgive the smaller debt of his fellow servant. ”The world needs forgiveness; too many people are caught up in resentment and harbor hatred, because they are incapable of forgiving. They ruin their own lives and the lives of those around them rather than finding the joy of serenity and peace. Let us ask Saint Francis to intercede for us, so that we may always be humble signs of forgiveness and channels of mercy.” 4. Abducted Salesian priest safe: Indian foreign minister: New Delhi: The Indian priest abducted by Islamic militants in Yemen five months ago is safe and the government has taken all necessary steps for his safe release, India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said. The relatives of the 57-year-old priest from Kerala came to the capital to plead with her to take emergency measures for the 57-year-old priest’s safe release.”The matter has been taken up with whichever country we thought could help us, not just at my level but at the level of the Prime Minister too,” Swaraj said when some members brought the house’s attention to a photograph. What has come as a hindrance in Fr Uzhunnalil’s case is that India had to relocate its embassy in Sanaa, Yemen in April 2015 to Djibouti after ISIS took control of a major part of Yemen and it spiraled into turmoil.India had made repeated requests to Indians to leave conflictridden Yemen. Feeling Proud Over Mother Teresa’s Canonisation: PM Modi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tributes to Mother Teresa, saying every Indian must feel proud as she has officially been recognised as a saint. PM Modi said that despite being not an Indian, Mother Teresa dedicated her whole life serving the Indians. “Mother Teresa devoted her whole life serving the poor and destitute people in India. When such a person is conferred with sainthood, it is natural for Indians to feel proud,” PM Modi said in his “Mann Ki Baat” radio address. He noted that Mother Teresa was an Albanian and English was not her mother tongue. “Mother Teresa is going to be canonised on September 4. We are sending an official delegation led by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to represent 1.25 crore Indians at the ceremony,” PM Modi said. Mother Teresa, who arrived in Kolkata on January 6, 1929, won numerous honours, including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. On October 19, 2003, she was beatified as “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta”. A second miracle was credited to her intercession by Pope Francis in December last year, paving way for her to be recognised as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church. THE CHURCH NEEDS YOU SAYS POPE FRANCIS TO WOMEN CONTEMPLATIVES IN THE APOSTOLIC CONSTITUTION VULTUM DEI QUAERERE (SEEKING THE FACE OF GOD) The Vatican on Friday, 22.7.2016, published a new Apostolic Constitution, “Vultum Dei Quaerere” (Seeking the Face of God), on Women’s Contemplative Life. The Constitution was announced on the feast of St. Mary Magdalen, contemplative par excellence and Apostle to the Apostles, at 10.00 A.M. in Rome and released at 12.00 noon. “Considering the fact that religious contemplatives had been eagerly awaiting for two years, for this Constitution, it is surprising that some media reports about it use phrases like ‘Pope shakes up cloisters’ and ‘Pope tightens reins’. Instead the contrary is true. We have welcomed it whole heartedly. We want it. In fact we are thrilled. We were reading it the day it was released, not reacting in horror as if this was some correction or infringement. As we went through the norms listed at the end, we found that we had already been living 30 KURNOOL VANI - SEPTEMBER 2016 many of them, as have most cloisters around the world. We can hardly fathom any cloister in the world not welcoming this. We are looking forward to the norms and directives that will be issued, hopefully soon, in conjunction with this new Constitution and can already unhesitatingly state our joy in being obedient to all the directives of the Holy See and express our gratitude for their diligence in seeking to protect us from anything that can destroy our interior lives and vocations.” says Mother Marietta, H.P.B. When you actually read the Constitution, and the references and resources within the text, you will see it is more like a ‘booster shot’ for contemplatives. A needed update to the guidelines already given that are addressing important changes in the world situation like technology in media and demographics. But in the end,it’s about prayer, and its critical place in the heart of the Church. It is a beautiful exposition of the power of hidden prayer and the purpose of lives lived in the cloister, imitating Christ in prayer alone with his Father and in his Passion. Vultum Dei Quaerere is another major resource for the life of the Church to assist the contemplatives in better living their”hidden” and cloistered vocation in prayer. The promotion of an adequate formation; the centrality of prayer and of the word of God, especially in lectiodivina; specific criteria for the autonomy of contemplative communities; and membership of monasteries within federations are some of the main points addressed by Pope Francis in the new Apostolic Constitution. In the introduction to Vultum Dei Quaerere, Pope Francis explains the motivation behind the document, noting the journey the Church has undergone, and “the rapid progress of human history,” in the fifty years since the Second Vatican Council. From that starting point, the Pope points out the need “to weave a dialogue” with contemporary society, while preserving the “foundational values” of contemplative life – silence, attentive listening, the call to an interior life, stability. Through these values, the Pope says, contemplative life “can and must challenge the contemporary mindset.” The document is introduced through a broad discussion of the importance of nuns and the contemplative life for the Church and the world. Addressing contemplative sisters, the Pope asks, “Without you what would the Church be like, or those living on the fringes of humanity and ministering in the outposts of evangelization?” The Church, he says, “greatly esteems your life of complete self-giving. The Church counts on your prayers and on your self-sacrifice to bring today’s men and women to the good news of the Gospel. The Church needs you!” Brief Review prepared by Fr.
