4 TAHITI & HER ISLANDS FIJI TAHITI Manihi Tikehau Bora Bora Taha’a Huahine Rangiroa Raiatea Moorea Tahiti Photos (left to right): InterContinental Bora Bora Le Moana, Pearl Resorts, Tahiti Tourisme, Pearl Resorts map not to scale Officially known as French Polynesia, Tahiti and her 118 islands cover an area over two million square miles (the size of Western Europe) of the South Pacific Ocean. Spread over five archipelagos, the total land mass adds up to an area only slightly larger than the tiny state of Rhode Island. The three archipelagos most sought after by visitors are the Society Islands, comprised of Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea and Taha’a; The Tuamotu Atolls or “Tahiti’s Strand of Pearls,” Rangiroa, Tikehau, and Fakarava; and the Marquesas, or “The Mysterious Islands.” Many islands are crowned with jagged peaks while others appear to float above the breaking waves. From barefoot relaxation to luxurious resorts, these exquisite islands blend the best of Polynesian warmth with French charm. Staying in your own overwater bungalow above soothing lagoon waters is the ultimate Tahiti experience. Snorkel and dive in warm, crystal clear lagoons with schools of fish, docile sharks, and giant manta rays. Experience the relaxation and rejuvenation of one of the luxurious Polynesian spas. Celebrate a honeymoon or anniversary in the most romantic place on earth. TAHITI & HER ISLANDS TAHITI Queen of the Pacific The main island of Tahiti is the largest, and Papeete the capital is gateway to the region. Ride an open-air Le Truck around the island, visit Le Marche to buy handicrafts, or dine at Les Roulettes on the waterfront. The island’s interior is worlds away from downtown Papeete as the landscape changes to rugged coastline, deep valleys, clear streams and waterfalls. Key points on the island include Matavai Bay, Cook’s Monument and the Gauguin Museum. MOOREA The Magical Island Just 10 minutes by air or 40 minutes by sea from Tahiti, Moorea is a favorite south seas experience. The jagged peaks and volcanic spires are a stark contrast to the lush deep valleys, cascading waterfalls, pineapple plantations, multi-hued lagoons and ivory sand beaches. With a circumference of just 37 miles, Moorea can be circled in a day by bicycle or car, enjoying spectacular views from Belvedere lookout and exploring villages and boutiques along the way. RAIATEA The Sacred Island Considered the birthplace of Tahitian culture and religion. This mountainous island has the most important and best preserved Marae in French Polynesia and is also home to Tiare Apetahi a rare flower that grows nowhere else on earth. BORA BORA Pearl of the Pacific Novelist James Mitchener described Bora Bora as “the most beautiful island in the world.” Undoubtedly this pearl of the pacific is a beautiful, romantic island and the most famous in French Polynesia. Bora Bora is small in size and surrounded by a stunning lagoon with the legendary Mt. Otemanu rising sharply from the center. Explore the coastline, just 20 miles around by foot or bicycle and discover ancient temples and polynesian villages. The main village of Vaitape is a unique mix of Tahitian, French and American culture, a former U.S. military base in the second World War. Staying in an overwater bungalow is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. To leave civilization one more step behind, take a boat ride to one of the sandy motus (islets) that dot the coral reef. TAHA’A The Vanilla Island An enchanting tropical paradise, Taha’a is an ancient volcano set in an emerald lagoon surrounded by tiny islets and stunning white sand beaches. Taha’a is home to plantations of fragrant vanilla that perfumes the coastal plains and small villages. HUAHINE Garden of Eden Home to dramatic geography and a watermelon and cantaloupe industry, Huahine is surrounded by coral gardens rich with sea life. A scenic road winds through rainforest canopies, past small villages of colorful homes where little has changed for generations, to the ancient Maeva Village where archaeological sites offer insight into island life 1,000 years before. A visit to picturesque Port Fare as it comes alive on shipping day while 400 inhabitants arrive to shop, trade and socialize is a must. RANGIROA The Infinite Lagoon The largest atoll in French Polynesia is regarded as a natural aquarium and was ranked by Jacques Cousteau as the most beautiful and richest lagoon in the world. This is paradise for deep sea fishing, snorkeling and diving, including the famous shark wall. You can also visit pearl farms that produce some of the most flawless black pearls in the world. TIKEHAU The Pink Sand Island Tikehau means “peaceful landing,” which perfectly describes this tiny atoll. Home to just 500 locals and copra (coconut) farming, this circular atoll has the largest concentration of fish of any lagoon in the world. With its jewel-toned blue lagoon and pink sand beaches (made of finely crushed coral), Tikehau is a remote paradise like no other. 5 6 TAHITI & HER ISLANDS Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa MOOREA, FRENCH POLYNESIA Cradled between Opunohu and Cook’s Bays, this is an idyllic setting for both sunrise and sunset views.
