essex ferrari 30th anniversary 1983-2013 august 2013 essex ferrari Issue 302 national meet & concours walton hall With the onset of some glorious weather for a change and the wonderful setting of Walton Hall in Warwickshire, our annual National Meet & Concours promised to be a corker. And so it proved with a fantastic display of Ferrari’s on the front lawn, on the concours field and also in the general Ferrari parking area. For those of us on judging duties the day began (too!) early at our usual meeting place of Waltham Abbey Marriott Hotel where I was joined by Tony Wilkes (Testarossa) and Andrew Seward (275 GTS) at 7:30am for our trek up the M40. On arrival at Walton Hall we had a short briefing before being put into our groups and given our classes to judge after which, we were free to have lunch, catch up with friends and wander around the cars. Other Essex members in attendance included Simon Walker, Rod Key, Jo and Dave Melling, Andy Hull and most of his family (how did he get them all in the 355?), Gino De Rienzo, Barbara and Jeff Simpson (arrived on Saturday), Terry Hoyle with son Alex and Edward Carter who had his beautiful 250GT Pf Cabriolet Series 2 entered in the concours. Also making an appearance before returning to their Florida home, were Joan and David Smee who were making the most of their by time catching up with many of their old Ferrari friends. No doubt there were a few more people around whom I failed to spot during my aimless meandering and therefore have not mentioned here for which, I apologise. newsletter of the essex area group of the ferrari owners club of great britain essex ferrari 30th anniversary 1983-2013 august 2013 essex ferrari Issue 302 national meet & concours walton hall Whilst there were a few exceptions, the standard of, and number of cars entered for the concours was again rather disappointing, but this is not the correct forum for that debate. One of the exceptions was of course, Edward Carters 250GT Pf which, after undergoing a major restoration following extensive fire damage, deservedly took the top concours award, the HR Owen Trophy. Terry Hoyle then treated us to an ice cream whilst we discussed where Ed could place the trophy for a celebratory picture, the bonnet of the winning car deeming unsuitable! The day ended with an amazing flying display by club member Peter Teichman in his wonderful Supermarine Spitfire Mk XI. newsletter of the essex area group of the ferrari owners club of great britain essex ferrari 30th anniversary 1983-2013 august 2013 essex ferrari Issue 302 All pictures courtesy of Jo Melling, Andy Hull & Steve Target newsletter of the essex area group of the ferrari owners club of great britain essex ferrari 30th anniversary 1983-2013 august 2013 essex ferrari Issue 302 Edward carters show winning 250GT Pf Cabriolet Mersea Lions Transport show saturday 17th August Just over a week away now, this really is promising to be a brilliant show, and we have been allocated parking in the display area for our Ferrari’s. The venue is Waldegraves Holiday & Leisure Park, Mersea Island, Colchester CO5 8SE The organisers are very keen to see our marque there so if you would like to display your car, please let me know so I can let them know how many spaces to allocate us. We have around 6 cars committed so far but there is room for more! You will be able to come and go when you please as your car will not be ‘locked in’ for the day and there will be plenty to see and do including; live music all day, 19 car clubs with over 190 vehicles on display, dog show, food stalls, 2 beer tents serving ales from the Mersea Brewery and various other stalls around the park. Although I have raced the car over about five seasons, I tend to only manage 3-4 events per year due to the usual constraints. Brands was the first time out this year for me. In qualifying I managed eighth out of 33 cars, which I was quite happy with but there were two cars ahead that had been invited to join us from another championship, so theoretically that would have been sixth without them. In the race it was baking hot, but the car ran reliably. After a poor start I dropped to tenth but then managed to recover to eighth with a lap time quicker than qualifying, possibly due to shaking off the rusty edges from limited outings. Ahead of me were a couple of 3 litre TVRs, a Datsun 240Z, Morgan plus 8 and a Lotus Europa, which eventually won the race. I plan to compete later in the year at Brands on 28th September and at Silverstone at the end of the season in October. In the meantime, I'm looking to reduce the weight of the car as although it is a glassfibre car it is about 100kg over the minimum weight. Rumours of a driver weight loss programme are exaggerated...... Jai Sharma Thanks to Jai for this report. I am always grateful to receive reports and pictures of your activity with your Ferrari. Simply send reports and pictures in an email to me at: [email protected] and I’ll do the rest. Seems we might not have too long to wait for the project to be finished. Can’t wait! Hi Steve, Maybe you can use this pic as a "late news flash"? This was taken yesterday (18th July). The paintwork is now complete and the car is ready for assembly. As you can see ........... I am a very happy bunny! Regards, Anthony foc brands hatch track day - tuesday 3rd september In some way, track days could be described as the antidote to the summer ‘show and shine’ events such as the concours and static car shows and surely there is nowhere better for a track day than this historic Kentish circuit. For those of us not brave enough to risk our cars on the track, access to the circuit is free, you can get some great pictures and for a small fee go on the track as a passenger. You will need to cover your arms and legs if going on the track and you will also obviously need a crash helmet (although I believe these can be borrowed at the circuit). Because this is our ‘local’ track day, there are usually a few Essex members to be found floating around the pit area so if you fancy watching lots of Ferrari’s being put through their paces, why not have a day off work and join us? You never know, you may just go home thinking about having a go at a track day yourself. newsletter of the essex area group of the ferrari owners club of great britain essex ferrari 30th anniversary 1983-2013 august 2013 essex ferrari Issue 302 July meeting, the anchor, danbury Once again, the car park at The Anchor reverberated to the sound of Italian 6, 8 and 12 cylinder engines as we gathered for our monthly Essex Ferrari meeting on 31st July. Also making a very welcome (re)appearance were Denise and Ray Jenkins, coming along after a conversation with Gino De Rienzo who brought his beautiful Mondial t Cabriolet. Also making a welcome return to the monthly meetings were Jo and Dave Melling in their 360 Modena, Dave getting the night off from rehearsing with his band. Special guest this month was Martyn Molyneux, the Essex Area organiser of the Porsche Club who came along with member of both clubs, Greg Thompson in his Dino. In all, there were ten Ferrari’s in attendance, the remainder being the 328 GTS of Vernon Smith; Testarossa - Tony Wilkes and Sheena; 360 Modena - Anthony Smith; the 550 Maranello’s of Keith Hughes and Jeff & Barbara Simpson; Adrian Haylock’s 355 Berlinetta and my 308 GT4. There were plenty of members not in their Ferrari’s but still taking the opportunity to enjoy an evening of Ferrari chat with friends including Jon Eckersley on his Harley Davidson, Keith Anderson, Terry Hoyle, Andy Hull, Simon and Malcolm Walker and Martin Jones, Martin incidentally, arriving with his Mondeo ‘fully freighted’ as we say in the transport industry with his bass guitar gear for an upcoming gig! Finally, it was lovely to see Bunty and Malcolm MacGregor at the meeting after being unable to attend recent meetings and events due to poor health. I’m sure you will all join me in wishing them both well and look forward to seeing them both at more events in the future. newsletter of the essex area group of the ferrari owners club of great britain essex ferrari 30th anniversary 1983-2013 august 2013 essex ferrari Issue 302 And finally... I was sent this by a colleague the other day and thought “why not put it in the newsletter” (or, this’ll put the cat among the pigeons!). Please remember ladies, it’s just a silly joke and we all know that without you, we wouldn’t have our Ferrari’s. This is just our pathetic way of fighting back! Men Logic: Woman: Do you drink beer? Man: Yes Woman: How many beers a day? Man: Usually about 3 Woman: How much do you pay per beer? Man: $5.00 which includes a tip Woman: And how long have you been drinking? Man: About 20 years, I suppose Woman: So a beer costs $5 and you have 3 beers a day which puts your spending each month at $450. In one year, it would be approximately $5400 am I correct? Man: Correct Woman: If in 1 year you spend $5400, not accounting for inflation, the past 20 years puts your spending at $108,000, correct? Man: Correct Woman: Do you know that if you didn't drink so much beer, that money could have been put in a step-up interest savings account and after accounting for compound interest for the past 20 years, you could have now bought a Ferrari? Man: Do you drink beer? Woman: No Man: Where's your Ferrari? Sits back, buckles up, braces oneself and awaits the onslaught! newsletter of the essex area group of the ferrari owners club of great britain essex ferrari 30th anniversary 1983-2013 august 2013 essex ferrari Issue 302 Essex ferrari monthly meetings Our monthly meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month at The Anchor, Runsell Green, Danbury CM3 4QZ Tel: 01245 222457 www.theanchordanbury.co.uk We always look forward to meeting new members and would love to see you at our monthly meetings.
