They represent the Museum to our visitors and keep things running smoothly. Volunteering at our Museum gives you the opportunity to learn more about WWII and D-Day history, to meet and befriend people with similar interests, and to serve this city's newest educational institution. Enclosed is a list of Volunteer opportunities. If you are interested, please fill out the enclosed application form and return it to me at the Museum. I will contact you to set up an interview. Barry Statia Volunteer Coordinator 945 Magazine Street New Orleans, LA 70130 527-6012 x 234 THE NATIONAL D-DAY MUSEUM VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES POSITION DESCRIPTIONS* GALLERY ATTENDANTS*: -staff the information/membership desk -staff the galleries; answer questions and direct visitors -shifts are in the A.M. or P.M., depending on the Museum's opening hours -once a week MUSEUM SHOP VOLUNTEERS*: -assist visitors in finding shop items -assist with inventory and stocking the shelves DOCENTS: -Docents are Volunteers trained to give guided tours through the Museum to visiting school groups and occasional adult groups. -an 8-12 hours of training, provided over several weeks, plus continuing education sessions is required SPEAKERS BUREAU: -these Volunteers are trained to give presentations about the Museum and about D-Day to schools, social and civic organizations, etc. -may also include outreach programs involving object-based presentations -training session COLLECTIONS VOLUNTEERS: -assists with inventory of artifact and archival collections -answers and returns phone calls; schedules donor appointments. -assists with filing and maintenance of collections records, including computerized database*. -conducts oral history interviews with veterans. *Student applicants must be 16 years of age, and/or currently enrolled in 10th grade, due to the large number of applicants requesting the opportunity to fulfill community service hour requirements. REQUIREMENTS MEMBERSHIP: All Volunteers are asked to become Museum members at a special Volunteer discount rate ($20/year). PARKING: We are unable to provide parking at this time. Public transportation and carpooling are highly recommended. DRESS: All Volunteers are required to wear a D-Day Museum Volunteer name tag. The first shall be provided free, however, replacements will cost $5.00. Although there is no Museum uniform, Docents and other Volunteers interacting with the public should dress appropriately. *Please, no face jewelry, bare midriffs, revealing skirts, jeans or excessively tight pants. Blouses with sleeves, shirts with collars are required in all areas of the Museum where you will come in contact with the public. BENEFITS Volunteers will be recognized based on their number of Volunteer hours. Special badges and gift certificates to the Museum shop are awarded for continued service. The Museum sponsors Volunteer appreciation parties and events, WWII documentary and feature film showings, and continuing education sessions. As members of the Museum, you are entitled to free entry to the Museum for one year as well as a discount in the Museum shop.
