Two new Caring Vans now serving Oklahomans
Spring 2015 For friends of The Oklahoma Caring Foundation, Inc. oklahomacaringfoundation.org Two new Caring Vans now serving Oklahomans Oklahoma has two new Caring Vans delivering lifesaving immunizations and other preventive health services to underserved children. In 2014, The Oklahoma Caring Foundation (OCF) expanded its longstanding partnership with the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) with the launch of a new Caring Van serving a 10-county area in southwest Oklahoma. “Improving Oklahoma’s public health infrastructure has been a goal of the Oklahoma Caring Foundation since its inception, so, it was only natural that we looked to OSDH to help determine where our mobile service model would make the greatest impact,” said Brooke Townsend, Oklahoma Caring Foundation manager. The new van is based in Lawton and will be managed by county health administrators in southwest Oklahoma. A second Caring Van was introduced in January 2015 and will travel throughout the state to serve members of American Indian tribes under the direction of the Oklahoma City Area Inter-Tribal Health Board (OCAITHB). OCAITHB’s mission to improve the health and quality of life of Native American communities through advocacy and education with federal, state and local entities, while maintaining tribal sovereign rights, fits perfectly with the Oklahoma Caring Foundation’s desire to help alleviate health disparities among underserved populations. “Our organizations share a belief in the value of partnerships. Combining forces with OCAITHB allows each agency to focus on what we do best and offer needed services to children and adults who encounter barriers to accessing traditional care providers,” Townsend said. The unit managed by OCAITHB will serve members of Oklahoma’s 38 federally recognized tribes and will offer a variety of preventive health services, which include oral health screenings, fluoride varnishes, diabetic foot checks, immunizations and education. 1 Oklahoma Caring Vans expand reach The Oklahoma Caring Foundation (OCF) will cover new ground in 2015 as three new units take the road. In addition to the new van being managed by the Oklahoma City Area Inter-Tribal Health Board (OCAITHB) mentioned previously, two more vehicles will be released this spring. One will be operated by the Chickasaw Nation and will serve a ten-county area in south central Oklahoma. The second van will be a new model designed specifically to offer preventive oral health services, in partnership with the OU College of Dentistry. These new units will play an important role in fulfilling the goals of OCF’s strategic plan. “In 2011, our board of directors adopted a bold vision that included both geographic and programmatic expansion. Our leaders recognized that the need for preventive health services often goes unmet in Oklahoma’s rural communities, where families may have to travel long distances to obtain basic care,” said Paula Huck, Oklahoma Caring Foundation Executive Director. The Oklahoma Caring Foundation was created on the principle that every child deserves access to fundamental care required to promote good health. Since its beginning, OCF has sought to eliminate the barriers that prevent children from receiving the services they need. Throughout much of our state, geographic isolation is a significant barrier, especially for low-income families for whom out-of-town travel often means lost work and lost wages. Through the combined services of OCF’s existing vans and the units to be introduced in 2015, the Oklahoma Caring Foundation will routinely deliver services in counties where 92% of Oklahoma’s children reside. Caring Vans, OU College of Dentistry join forces to create brighter smiles The Oklahoma Caring Foundation is proud to announce a new project in partnership with the OU College of Dentistry. By mid-2015, a new Caring Van, specifically designed to offer preventive dental services, will begin serving children across central Oklahoma. The unit will be staffed by dental hygiene and dentistry students who will work under the supervision of faculty and/or volunteer dentists. Services offered will include general exams, fluoride varnishes, and dental sealants. “Our expansion into the dental realm is something we have been working toward for several years,” said Brooke Townsend, Oklahoma Caring Foundation manager. “In 2012, we asked child care providers and educators who utilized the Caring Vans for immunizations what additional services were most needed by the families they served.” The answer was loud and clear: preventive dental services are desperately needed, and too often, they are a service children go without. “We invested considerable time and energy to select appropriate services for our mobile model and in finding a strong partner that would be able to manage the van and offer value to families,” Townsend said. For college students preparing for careers in dental hygiene and dentistry, the Oklahoma Caring Van Program offers an opportunity to get out into the community and make a difference while gaining exposure to pediatric preventive oral health care. “Faculty and students at the OU College of Dentistry are very excited about the increased community outreach opportunities a partnership with the Oklahoma Caring Foundation can provide for our dental students and our dental hygiene students,” said Marsha W. Beatty, assistant professor of research, Community Dentistry Division, OU College of Dentistry and co-chair, Oklahoma Oral Health Coalition. She continued saying, “They consistently demonstrate a significant commitment to providing oral health education and other preventive services in schools and other community settings. Having a Caring Van available to the College will allow us to substantially expand both the scope and the frequency of those outreach efforts on a consistent basis.” 2 THE CARING CONNECTION 11th Annual Champions of Health Gala a huge success Donor Spotlight The Oklahoma Caring Foundation depends on generous support of individuals, foundations, and businesses that share our belief that no child should suffer from an illness that can be prevented. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helps us fulfill our mission by supporting programs that provide Oklahomans access to preventive health services. George Kaiser Family Foundation On September 30, 2014, more than 500 Oklahomans gathered to celebrate building a healthier future for our state at the 11th annual Champions of Health Gala. The 2014 event featured comments from Dr. Terry Cline, Oklahoma Commissioner of Health, who praised the Oklahoma Caring Vans for delivering more than 250,000 lifesaving vaccines to Oklahoma children. Ted Haynes, OCF Chairman, shared his pride in the Foundation’s ongoing expansions to serve a broader area of the state and to offer new services to keep Oklahoma children healthy. The evening drew record-breaking sponsorship funds, which will be invested in the Foundation’s continued growth. Keynote speakers Bob and Lee Woodruff inspired the audience with their story of resilience after Bob, an ABC News co-anchor, was critically injured by a roadside bomb while reporting on the war in Iraq in 2006. They emphasized the importance of community and of programs designed to support families in times of crisis. Winners in five categories received awards, and New View Oklahoma was honored as the Dr. Rodney L. Huey Memorial Champion of Oklahoma Health. The 2014 Champions of Health Gala was graciously chaired by Martha Burger, whose tireless commitment to improving the quality of life in Oklahoma contributed greatly to the event’s success. The Champions of Health Gala is presented by a coalition of public health partners. In addition to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma, the Champions of Health Coalition Partners include the Office of the GovernorNative American Liaison, Oklahoma Dental Association, Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality, Oklahoma Health Care Authority, Oklahoma Hospital Association, Oklahoma State Department of Health and the Oklahoma State Medical Association. Spring 2015 The George Kaiser Family Foundation (GKFF) has invested in the lives of children served by the Oklahoma Caring Foundation since 2003. Their support was instrumental in launching a second Caring Van in Tulsa more than a decade ago. Since that time, GKFF has contributed more than $270,000 to support the Oklahoma Caring Van Program’s work to deliver lifesaving vaccines to underserved children. OCF is honored to be among the many organizations that GKFF supports because of its dedication to providing equal opportunity for young children in our community through investments in early childhood education, community health, social services, and civic enhancement. The Anschutz Foundation The Anschutz Foundation based in Denver, CO, impacts communities nationwide through their generous support of nonprofits that serve economically disadvantaged Americans. The Anschutz Foundation, upon recommendation from the Oklahoma Publishing Company, continued its support of OCF in 2014 with a second contribution of $5,000 to further efforts to improve the lives of Oklahomans by providing access to preventive health services. We are pleased to partner with the Anschutz Foundation to create a healthier future for all of our state’s residents. 3 Meet a Board Director: Don Wilber M.D. Partnership with Community Action Agency grows in 2014 Dr. Don Wilber joined the Oklahoma Caring Foundation Board of Directors in 2002. Dr. Wilber, a board certified pediatrician, serves as Chief of Staff for Midwest Regional Medical Center, and passionately believes in the role immunizations play in protecting the lives of the children in his practice and throughout the state. “Vaccines are second only to clean water as the most important medical advance in the last century. They are a lifesaving miracle,” he explains. “It was only 60 years ago that polio crippled and killed thousands of children, and parents were so scared that their children did not go to a swimming pool or a movie. Today, we no longer see polio in the U.S.” Two years ago, the Oklahoma City-based Caring Vans began offering body mass index (BMI) screenings for children ages two through 18. In 2014, OCF was able to work with the Community Action Agency of Oklahoma & Oklahoma/Canadian Counties (CAA) to collect height and weight data on nearly 500 children at 15 Head Start centers. Dr. Wilber brings a wealth of volunteer experience to the Oklahoma Caring Foundation. He currently serves as Chairman of the Vaccine Advisory Committee for the Oklahoma State Department of Health, as well as President-Elect of the Oklahoma County Medical Society. He sits on the OU College of Medicine Board of Admissions and is a member of the board of the Children’s Hospital Foundation. He also works to educate the next generation of physicians as a clinical instructor at the OU College of Medicine. Dr. Wilber is a fierce proponent of preventive care and takes pride in the accomplishments of the Oklahoma Caring Foundation. “This organization has put our population, especially our children, as a top priority in this state,” Wilber said. “Their forward thinking has started with supplying vaccinations to children that were underserved and now expanded to dental care and obesity education for many others as well as the children. I thank all who participate with this organization in making Oklahoma a healthier place to live.” Partner Spotlight: Laura Dester Children’s Center For many years, the Laura Dester Children’s Center (LDCC) has been the first stop for Tulsa County children removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. That will change later this year as a result of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services’ recent announcement that LDCC, along with the Pauline E. Mayer Children’s Shelter in Oklahoma City, will close in the next six to nine months. The Oklahoma Caring Foundation’s relationship with LDCC began in 2011, after an observant Caring Van specialist noticed a nurse in the waiting room of a local health department on several occasions, each time, with a different group of children. After a short conversation, the Caring Van was invited to conduct the first of what would become bi-weekly clinics at LDCC. Many children entered LDCC behind on vaccines. Prior to partnering with the Oklahoma Caring Van Program, staff transported as many children as they could to the local health department, but many slipped through the cracks. Since the Caring Van began visiting LDCC, more than 750 children have received over 1,700 vaccines. Caring Van specialist Tina Pyeatt has worked with LDCC staff for more than three years and saw firsthand the difference this partnership has made for children there. “These children have been through so much already. By going directly to them, we have not only been able to ensure that virtually all of the children in need were able to receive vaccines, but our presence also minimized the difficulty in receiving shots by providing a child-focused service in a non-threatening environment,” Pyeatt explained. “While we are sad to lose a wonderful community partner, we hope that the changes will be in the best interest of the children.” Pyeatt expressed personal thanks to the LDCC nurses and staff for their cooperation and heartfelt care for every child, saying “They are absolutely wonderful, and we wish nothing but the best for both the staff and the children.” The Caring Van will continue to hold clinics at LDCC as long as we are needed. 4 THE CARING CONNECTION Each child’s parent or guardian receives an individualized report on his or her child’s status and a list of no-cost and low-cost resources that promote healthy lifestyles in their community. The screenings were coordinated by Caring Van Specialist Andrea Oguinn. “The Community Action Agency is an ideal partner for BMI screenings,” Oguinn said. She continued by explaining, “The children we screen come from families that are working hard to make positive choices for their children, but many of them struggle to access information and services that don’t involve a heavy price tag. By providing the list of community resources, we empower families to find affordable options for building healthy lifestyles.” Oguinn hopes that the information we provide to parents today will help their young children adopt healthy habits that will last a lifetime. The data collected through BMI screenings is entered into a database that provides doctors and researchers at the OU Pediatric Wellness Center with a snapshot of child obesity in Oklahoma. This information aids in their work to develop effective interventions for at-risk children. Partner Spotlight: Infant Crisis Services The Oklahoma Caring Foundation is proud to be part of a community of nonprofit agencies dedicated to the health and well-being of Oklahoma children. Infant Crisis Services (ICS) is one of many organizations that share our commitment to improving the lives of Oklahoma’s children. ICS provides formula, food, and diapers to babies and toddlers in times of crisis. Like OCF, ICS has adopted a model for reaching children in need through a mobile service unit. The ICS BabyMobile teamed up with the Caring Vans for several clinics in 2014. More than 100 families received life-sustaining supplies from the BabyMobile at the same time the Caring Vans offered crucial vaccines. “We know that families in crisis have enough to deal with, so anytime we can join forces with another agency to meet multiple needs at a single time and place, we jump at the chance,” said Jenny Koetter, Oklahoma Caring Van specialist. “It is a win-win for the children we serve, and we look forward to a continued partnership with ICS.” Spring 2015 OCF welcomes new development coordinator Emily Bolusky joined the Oklahoma Caring Foundation team in June, taking on the role of development coordinator. Emily came to OCF from Indian Health Care Resource Center of Tulsa where she spent 13 years as public relations manager. She brings expertise in fund development, marketing, and community relations. Emily has a passion for nonprofits and currently serves as president of the Tulsa Chapter of the Association of Women in Communications and sits on the Board of Directors of the Tulsa YWCA. “I am extremely excited to work with such a dynamic group of people that are committed to improving the lives of so many children in Oklahoma,” she said. Emily hit the ground running and has already been instrumental in securing important funding for OCF, as well as in the success of the Champions of Health gala. Emily lives in Tulsa with her husband, Richie, and daughters Conley and Campbell. 5 2014 Tribute gifts and donors In Memoriam KENNETH DUANE CANTREL By Pamela Milleson JOHN GRAVES By BCBSOK Public Relations and Be Covered Departments RODNEY L.
