A native of France, Christophe Cardot
grew up in a French countryside with fields
of sunflowers and fresh raspberries as
inspirations of color.
Cardot arrived in Florida in 2003 to
pursue his dream of a full time art career
and tells his story with his works.
After working with pastels and acrylics
for years, Cardot now paints mostly with
oil paints. Using only the six colors of light,
which are seen in a rainbow, allows him to
keep his colors in harmony with nature.
Primarily self-taught, he has studied
with several well-respected artists statewide
and nationally. After becoming a professional
artist, he won more than fifty awards
during the first six years. He recently had an
exhibition in New York City with the World
Tour of Contemporary Landscape Artists.
Cardot uses the Golden Ratio to create
his compositions and the Impressionists
palette. He has been invited to participate
in Florida “Plein Air” paint-outs, and
his paintings can be found in collections
throughout the United States and Europe.
Teaching painting classes and giving
workshops are an enjoyment for him.
He is a member of the International Plein
Air Painters, World Tour of Contemporary
Landscapes Artists and American
Impressionists Society and has received
a grant to take a workshop with a
Master Pastelist.

“Monday Morning at the River” Artist: Christophe Cardot
daytona beach,
F
daytona beach shores, ormond beach
& new smyrna beach
From the moment you feel the sand under
your toes, the upbeat energy of Daytona Beach will
captivate your heart. The sun shines on 23 miles of
coastline, a stretch of golden beaches with a wide
range of sporting activities from bicycling to deep-sea
fishing, the best that Florida has to offer.
We’ll help you discover the hot spots, the
best places to shop, eat and dance the night away
in Daytona Beach as well as our neighboring
communities of Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach
Shores, New Smyrna Beach and Ponce Inlet.
From flying a kite to building a sandcastle with
the family, you’ll find our beaches are great places for
playing in the sun or under the moon. It’s all part of
the local landscape that we share with visitors.
Whether you prefer leisurely strolls or more
vigorous walks and action-packed days, you’ll soon
feel at home with our tips for outdoor fun, local eating
establishments and the best bargains.
d2 daytona beach area
We welcome one and all, and our wide range
of visitors proves just why this friendly seacoast is
among America’s favorites.
In our seaside neighborhoods, there are kidfriendly mini parks with slides, swings and multilayered play structures to explore. Best of all, children
of all ages like to cool off in the splash fountains
designed to delight and refresh.
If you are looking for adventure, consider a
kayak or canoe to paddle the quiet coastal waterways
among pines and palmettos. Experience the thrill of
parasailing, rent a personal watercraft or cruise down
the Intracoastal.
There’s so much to do, from strolling the
boardwalk to playing championship golf, that it will
be hard to decide what to do first.
At the end of the day, settle down with a tall iced
beverage while you watch the last rays of a Florida
sunset. Whatever your lifestyle, you can do it all here.

activities
in the daytona beach area
Discover our historic
landmarks, climb Florida’s
tallest lighthouse at Ponce
Inlet, explore the ruins of
an early sugar mill or visit
the ballpark where Jackie
Robinson played in the first
integrated Major League
spring training game in 1946.
Beyond the beach are the
lush fairways of our worldclass golf courses, one reason
the area is rated one of the
top golfing destinations in
the world.
Don’t forget, we’re the
birthplace of speed and
one of the few places that
allows driving on the beach.
O
“Canaveral Seashore” Artist: Christophe Cardot
Once you’ve spent some time in the sun and relaxed,
chances are you’re ready for high spirited fun.
For some, that’s grabbing a surf board for the best
surfing on the Eastern Seaboard. But you can also rent
a personal watercraft or learn to soar above the crowd
on a parasail.
If fishing is your game, the Atlantic Ocean, Indian River
and the estuaries along the Intracoastal all provide excellent
fishing challenges. Anglers can enjoy a full-day charter of
deep-sea fishing or a short freshwater trip that the whole
family will enjoy.
d4 daytona beach area
The Daytona International
Speedway offers tours, and
to satisfy your need for
excitement, let loose and
take the wheel at a go-kart park and experience the thrill
of taking the turns at top speed.
Not far inland you’ll find air boat rides, sparkling
springs perfect for a refreshing dip and the charming
town of Deland. Our wildlife preserves, safe havens for
waterfowl and migrating birds, are places where only the
splash of a canoe or kayak paddle breaks the stillness.
And before you leave, try to fit in simple pleasures.
Ride a bike along the dunes, attend a seasonal art show
or heritage festival—our area’s full of unexpected fun.

UNDER THE WINTER SUN
Sun protection is important during the
winter even if it feels cool on the beach.
Always wear sunblock of at least SPF 15
broad spectrum or higher. Give attention
to the tops of your ears, lips and the back
of your neck…we don’t want over exposure
to interrupt your fun vacation plans.
Wear a wide brim hat and shades that
have UV protection…yes, even in the
summer, spring and fall!

turtle nesting season
begins in May, runs through October
The yellow markers and netting mean a sea
turtle has deposited her eggs in the sand!
All sea turtles are endangered, but
Loggerheads are most commonly seen on
our beaches. Hatchlings—only about 2 inches
long—wait until the sand cools at night before
scrambling to the water where they spend
several years in floating beds of seaweed.
Green turtles and huge Leatherbacks also
nest on Florida shores. Turtles don’t reach
maturity for 15 to 50 years. Scientists believe
that only 1 in 1,000 to 10,000 babies will survive
to adulthood.
Don’t disturb a turtle that is crawling on the
beach or laying eggs. Watch from a distance of
at least 30 feet.
Avoid shining lights on the beach at night as
this may frighten nesting females and confuse
the hatchlings’ ability to find the sea.

Environmental Management Division. For West
Volusia 386-736-5927, for Daytona Beach

weekends, call 1-888-404-3922.

a world of dining choices
Florida has culinary roots in Spanish
and Caribbean dishes that mix savory
herbs and fresh ingredients like mango,
avocado and peppers. But southern
cooking traditions are also strong in

hush puppies are specialties that many
of our restaurants serve with pride.
We also offer romantic dinner
cruises and funky themed restaurants.
The ambience of your surroundings,
including the presence of visitors from
around the world, enhances your
dining pleasure. Waterfront views are
everywhere, from simple eateries serving

Key Lime Pie is a creamy, sweet dessert with a fresh
taste that tingles on your tongue. It originated back in the
19th century in Key West. Made with the juice of tart, thin
skinned, yellow Key limes and sweetened condensed milk,
it has many variations, including meringue topping. The
availability of authentic Key lime juice has allowed this
regional dessert to spread far beyond Florida.

Welcome to St. Augustine, a cultural melting pot with
a vibrant historic past. Its ties to Spain and Europe are so
rich and exciting that they nearly overshadow the area’s
natural beauty.
Besides exploring the Old City, follow our tips for
enjoying the outlying areas, including world class golf,
year-round fishing and fantastic surfing and water sports.
The area has more than 100 parks for hiking, biking,
canoeing and kayaking. Create family memories while
watching the children build a sand castle, fish off a pier,
or take a pontoon boat tour on a placid waterway.
Romantics will be swept away by cozy bistros with
inner courtyards, urbane wine bars and all the many facets
of nightlife in this city. Ramble to your heart’s content,
be entertained at a cozy piano bar, or dance to the music
of the night.
s4 st. augustine area
To get the feel of the historic district, set out on foot
or bicycle to explore the brick paved streets laid out in
orderly fashion. The area is peppered with fascinating
landmarks and an eclectic mix of architecture, from
colonial dwellings with inner courtyards and Victorian
houses painted in candy store colors, to community
churches that have survived for generations.
Prepare to be charmed by lively dramatic re-enactors
who bring history to life and teach us new lessons of
how our nation has survived. After all, St. Augustine was
founded by Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565, 450 years
ago — long before Plymouth Rock—and is the oldest
continually occupied settlement in America.
It’s the sight of Spanish conquistadors, American
Indians and colonial citizens in authentic dress as they
tell tales of their struggles that make this city the most
fascinating in America.

in the st. augustine area
Saltwater and freshwater fishing
are minutes from the historic district.
Hang out at a local bait shop to soak
up the local lore about “the big one
that got away.”
Along the Matanzas River, family
operated fishing resorts offer complete
setups, renting pontoon boats and skiffs
as well as tackle, if you didn’t bring
your rod. Locals are eager to give tips
on inshore saltwater fishing near feeder
creeks and oyster bars off the main
channel where they catch black drum,
tarpon and mangrove snapper.
Deep-sea charters will take you
trolling for wahoo, tuna and marlin, or
hop on a party boat to fish for redfish,
speckled trout and flounder.
A
“Kinship under sail from bow” Artist: Roger Bansemer
After you’ve soaked up the Old City’s ambiance,
you won’t have to venture far for surfing, parasailing, jet
skiing, sailing or windsurfing on Anastasia Island or Ponte
Vedra, or swim with the Dolphins at Marineland.
Hiking up 219 steps to the top of the St. Augustine
Lighthouse, the oldest navigational site in North America,
is worth the view. After seeing the expanse of azure water
that surrounds the area, you will understand why fishing
is a year ‘round sport here.
s6 st. augustine area
Whether you’re in top form or just
a weekend golfer, there’s a local golf
course with gently rolling fairways for
you to try. Courses have been designed
by such world champions as Sam Sneed,
Gene Sarazen, Arnold Palmer and Jack
Nicklaus. And for a golfer’s paradise, visit the World Golf
Hall of Fame.
More than 100 parks are the area’s treasures, retreats
for nature lovers and reminders of how ancient Indian
civilizations lived off the land for thousands of years.
Spend a morning biking, hiking, canoeing or kayaking,
and you’ll feel far removed from the rush of the city.
Just for fun, how about wine tasting or end the day
with a ghost tour —with 450 years of history, didn’t you
expect some mysteries?

“Manatee” Artist: Roger Bansemer
The Florida manatee is
Florida’s state marine mammal
All manatees, also known as
sea cows, are herbivores and
aquatic relatives of the elephant.
You will find them locally in our
warmer 68° spring waters in the winter.
They migrate as far north as the Carolinas
in the summer, and in recent years as far north
as Cape Cod.
These gentle creatures use their front flippers to help them steer
through shallow rivers. Their flat tail is powerful and propels them through the water.
Today our manatee population is estimated to be approximately 5,000 individuals.
