What we said
Kedem members were given ample
opportunity to promote the shule in the
Australian Jewish News during a time
when a large part of the Melbourne Jewish
community was becoming more vocal
about disenfranchisement with traditional
services.
Katrina Kolt
28 April 1995
As a part of a series “My Minyan”
“The reason I belong to Kedem is that I
want to be counted as part of a minyan and
to participate equally in synagogue ritual.”
A smaller minyan is more personally
involving.”
“despite some
disagreement
regarding the
format of the
service, most
people involved
cherish the
opportunity to
try new tunes
and experiment
with different
prayers.”
“Kedem
provides a forum
for those wishing
to come closer
to Judaism and
to learn how
to participate in the service in a nonthreatening environment. It provides the
opportunity to learn how to lead a service
and take responsibility in the community.
“It is a place to regain empowerment as
a Jew”

Letter response to columnist Ibn Ezra:
“There are accessible minyanim where
newcomers are welcome and nobody is kept out
by high seat rentals.
“At Kehillah David Hamelech (Kedem)
subscriptions are self-assessed. No one misses
out on a warm community and a place to
share their Judaism because of money. Giving
time, ideas and friendship is, however, highly
valued in our young, lay led and still evolving
community.”
Mottel Gutnik

Op-ed following a reader’s letter about
Reform services being like church services.
Gutnik responds with scholarly supporting
evidence about history and tradition, plus a
description of Kedem’s services.
“Responsive readings? The Orthodox
machzorim for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
are replete with them. English? The Shulchan

language.’ And, in a similar vein: ‘It is better
to recite fewer prayers with one’s attention
focused upon their meaning than many
without the proper concentration.’
“The organ? Guitar? Well, you are not
alone there Miriam. The rabbis of the Talmud
grumbled about the organ in the Temple
being a distraction, musically. … They
complained that it interfered with the singing
and wanted to reform the services by doing
away with it. …
“Just as Orthodox shules are by no means
homogeneous in their style of worship

“Perhaps Miriam and others similarly
minded might like to try the style of worship
offered by Kedem. ... You might be pleasantly

Kedem’s participatory singing encouraged Peter
Marks to improve his auditory abilities.
“I can’t sing in tune. I’m really hopeless. I
hear the music very well, I love hearing it, and

I just know that I love the participatory music,
and I don’t like being sung at.”

Musical Roots
From Kedem’s founding, music was a part of
Kedem’s essence.
Julie Howard (nee Andrews) took the lead on
coordinating music, working and splitting duties
for a few years with Libby Appelboom. When
Julie moved to Hong Kong, Libby coordinated
Kedem’s music. When she led music, she often
partnered with her husband, Lionel.
Kedem at its outset was participatory and
experimental, with members eager to allow
people to try new things they wanted to and
were willing to do – and music was no different.
“It felt like Netzer,” Libby said. “It was me
and Lionel, and we had been doing that at
Netzer. I felt quite comfortable.”

With encouragement, other music leaders
emerged, each with unique musical taste and

evolves.
“I think the different voices that people bring
and the different perspectives make each time
you go a bit of an adventure,” said foundation
member Marlo Newton. “When somebody stands
up to give the D’var, you haven’t heard them
every week for 20 years. If someone stands up
to sing, you know you’ll know most of the tunes,
but there will be a little tweak and a little
surprise. It’s lovely.”

Wedding and Aufrufs
Despite Kedem having many aufrufs, Deb Stone
and Danny Companez have the distinction of being
Kedem’s only wedding in February 2001 (pictured,
right).
In Deb’s own words: “Danny and I met at Kedem,
both our boys were raised in (and sometimes by!) the
community, and we feel our family is truly blessed by
our kehillah.”
On the day before their wedding, and only a week
after coming back from the United States, Marlo
Newton and Tal Spinrad had their wedding callup at
Kedem, in February 2003.
In Marlo’s words: “It was a wonderful chance to
share our joy with our entire Kedem community, as
our wedding was relatively small. Tal gave a D’var
he’d been writing since Sukkot! I leyned our parasha
Terumah, which I had learned on the plane. My dad

Kedem welcomed her brother, Asher Joseph Stanton.
In Zoe’s words: “We created a short ceremony that
was very personal and meaningful – we were able
to share the connections of their names to their
grandparents, and to include extended family and
friends in delivering short readings. For Tamara’s
ceremony we had asked people who had been my B’nei

Young and Not So Young
William Davies, son of Bec and Owen, and
grandson of Peter and Liz Marks, is the
youngest member of Kedem, born in July 2013.
“Kedem is part of my family,” he said.
Born 26 May 1915,
Anne Starr is Kedem’s
oldest member, 7
years older than the
next oldest member.
After celebrating
Anne’s 99th birthday
at Kedem, her son
Robin said: “She feels
very at home and just
loves being made a
fuss of (don’t we all?).
I look forward to the
big one at Kedem next
year!”
Anne Starr celebrated her 99th with son Robin
and his wife, Rosemary; grandchildren Adam,
Michael and Jackie; and great-granddaughter
Ellie.
Allegra Valent, born in November 2012, is
the second-youngest member of Kedem,
the daughter of Annette Herschtal and Ariel
Valent. Allegra is pictured with her 4-year-old
sister, Mietta.
Annette: “Thank you to all the people that

In early 1996, Bev and Andrew Gelbart had
started thinking about the options for their

the Kedem Board, discussed the possibilities
with President Sam Granek. Both agreed that
“Kedem would still be around in two years’ time
and could create a good B’nei Mitzvah program”.
The Gelbarts booked in Sarah’s Bat Mitzvah, and
Bev and others started planning a program of

On hearing about this, Tomi Kalinski liked
the concept and booked Danielos in for his Bar

where men and women sat together. I started
looking for a place like that.”
In addition to its intimacy, Kedem’s
decentralised structure, openness to new

if members were able to do them – all added
further appeal to Tomi.
“We created the reality,” she said. “I don’t

“Joshi Appelboom and I used to crawl
under the chairs during services when
we were both babies.
“I went on shnat Netzer after
graduating and have led in Netzer for
the 4 years since coming back.
“I am currently an honours student in
computer science at Monash University.”

Shira Appelboom (2007)
“One memory that has stayed with me was reading from the Torah and
knowing it so well that I was looking up at everyone else instead of at the
words in the Torah.
“I am involved in many worthy Jewish organisations – of course
Kedem, King David School, Netzer and other youth movements, and
the substantive group of Jewish students at Monash University. Other
volunteering work includes tour guiding at the Jewish Museum,

consumption.”
generous call-ups, and lots of people could get
called up. A lot of it was in English, so there
were people who could understand it.”
My Big Fat Greek Bar Mitzvah
The reality became Kedem’s largest-ever
event at that time, and one that felt inclusive
and multi-cultural. The invitation was in
three languages – English, Yiddish and Greek
(Danielos’s father’s side of the family). Nearly
250 guests celebrated, too many for the regular
hall, so a large black-and-white striped, open
marque was erected in the courtyard behind
the school.
“We called it ‘Jacob’s tent’ because that was
his parsha,” Tomi said.
The Kiddish was an international
smorgasbord of signature dishes from various
friends and family, which included Greek food

represented the event that entrenched Kedem’s
full legitimacy.
“We knew we had made it,” said founding
member Zvi Civins. “We were professional
without being professionals. There was a high
quality to it. That was a good turbo charge that
UHDOO\SURSHOOHGXVIRUZDUG7KHÀUVWIHZ\HDUV
there was a sense of we’ll see how this goes.
The High Holy Days and the B’nei Mitzvot were
the proof that we were good, that we were
there to stay.”

Made by Rhonda Nirens out of raw silk,
the “hippie Torah cover,” as Tomi calls
it, depicts the tree of life with Jacob’s
ladder leaning against it and leading to the
heavens.
“I still get a buzz every time I see it,” Tomi
said.

Danita Moshinsky (2008)
“It was so nice to work with a small group
of people, collaborating together leading up
to our respective Bar and Bat Mitzvot.
“I attended Bialik College, and I am
currently on shnat with Habonim Dror. Shnat
has strengthened my connection with Israel
as well as motivated me to be involved in the
Melbourne community upon my return home.”
