1 From the board Contents Goodbye 2013, hello 2014 Many Dutch people associate the figure 13 with bad luck. Now that 2013 is almost behind us we can happily conclude that this year has instead brought us plenty of good fortune. Indeed, for the fourth year running we have booked an impressive growth in turnover. In fact, turnover has in the past four years practically doubled on that in 2009. A remarkable achievement in a time when many temp agencies are fighting for their survival. Truth is that this would not have been possible without the commitment and involvement of all our HOBIJ flex colleagues. You are true HOBIJ ambassadors who, thanks to your performance, have also turned our customers into HOBIJ ambassadors. This approach has enabled us, also in 2013, to earn the loyalty of many new customers, a winning strategy that we expect to continue in 2014. Slowly but surely we are acquiring a leading position within the flexible labour sector when it comes to the flexible deployment of motivated (skilled) workers for companies in the food, logistics and metalworking industry. Supply copy ....................................................... 10 Something we can all look forward to next year is the smashing party in which the whole HOBIJ family can come together to celebrate the wonderful development of our company. On behalf of the management of HOBIJ, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very happy end to 2013. Have you received the survey from Great Place to Work? Han van Horen Director Please join! Interview HOBIJ flex worker The interview below was published in the latest edition of Dichterbij, the customer magazine of Rabobank Uden-Veghel. ‘Life is a series of small steps’ FROM OPOLE TO UDEN Tessa Maciejok (29) came to the Netherlands when she was 18 years old. Now, she is working via HOBIJ at Modine in Uden. 2 TEXT: MATHIEU BOSCH PHOTOS VAN ASSENDELFT FOTOGRAFIE Poland for good. Of course, I had to get used to Dutch food, especially the bread, but now it tastes good to me, even though I sometimes yearn for a typical Polish meal. The work is good, everything is well arranged. I am well paid and happy with my life. Yes, I am a satisfied person. Sometimes people here like to complain, but if you know how things are in other countries, then you may consider yourself lucky that you live and work in the Netherlands. I devote nearly all my spare time to my daughter. I am divorced and try to take care of her as best as I can. Together to the cinema, sports, riding bicycles or reading. The same kind of things that everyone else does here. I was born and raised in a different country, but that is the only difference. I work hard, spend evenings with my daughter and occasionally with my friends. All in all, a pretty normal life.’ Tessa completed her schooling in Poland over 11 years ago, but there was no work to be found. Tessa: ‘There are few jobs for youths in Poland. I couldn't see a future for myself there and decided, together with my sister, to try to earn a living elsewhere. Positive things were being said about the opportunities in the Netherlands. I took the gamble, and never regretted it. My sister returned quite soon thereafter, but I found a place for myself here. I was born and raised in Opole, a city the size of Eindhoven with a magnificent historic centre. Poland and my home town will always have a special place in my heart. Although I go back four times a year and maintain contact with family and friends via Skype, I don't really miss my country of birth. After all, I have many friends here and a busy job to keep me occupied. Because that is what is important to me: working hard to create a good future for myself and my daughter Linda (8). Big party in October 2014 Residence permit As stated in earlier newsletters, we at HOBIJ are working hard on becoming a Great Place to Work. We Via temp agency HOBIJ in Veghel, I have now been working for 2 years at Modine in Uden. My work consists of the assembly and testing of oil coolers. Plenty of fine colleagues help to make my working day a pleasant experience. I hope to become so valuable to the company that they will give me a permanent job and greater security. It is in Uden that I feel most at home. Life is a series of small steps. Sure, it took a while to get used to the Dutch customs and manners, but now I am happy here. I speak the language fluently and my child goes to school here, she's a real Brabander. The people here are very friendly. Everyone says hello when you are walking in town, that's not something they do in Poland. In 2009 I took a civic integration course and received my permanent residence permit. I have also been fixed customer of the Rabobank for 10 years now. Not that I have to visit their office regularly, but when I do they help me right away. Things tend to be organised very smoothly here. want to offer an even broader package of services to our people, by supporting them in their (new) work and life in the Netherlands, and paying even closer attention to their needs and wishes. Many flex workers responded enthusiastically to the idea of organising an annual party for everyone who works at HOBIJ. Well, we too thought it was a great idea and decided to make it happen in 2014. in fact, we have already started with the preparations! The big party is scheduled for October. In the run-up to the party, you will receive regular updates, so don't forget to check the following issues of HOME as well as our Facebook page, of course! www.facebook.com/hobij.eu Poland Since Poland joined the EU in 2004, a large stream of jobseekers made their way to the Netherlands. The main driving force is the poor economic situation in their own country. It is difficult to find work in Poland, where the salaries are significantly lower than in the Netherlands. While there are plenty of Poles who have decided to settle in the Netherlands, by far and away the most make the journey to carry out seasonal labour after which they return to Poland. Questionnaire Great Place to Work (GPTW) Riding my bicycle or reading The release of this newsletter more or less coincides with the start of the employee satisfaction survey. Every HOBIJ employee who has been with us I have learned and discovered so much in this country that, as far as I'm concerned, I will never go back to 3 for longer than a year has received an email from the Great Place to Work Institute with the request to complete the questionnaire. give an overview of the ideas/suggestions that we have decided to follow up on in the next few months. What do we want to realise in the coming period? If you have received this questionnaire, we kindly request that you complete it. We are eager to learn about your experiences regarding various matters within HOBIJ. It gives us a reliable impression of the matters with which employees are satisfied - or rather dissatisfied. We regard this information as very valuable as it gives us insight into possible points for improvement. As a follow-up to the study by Agnete Butkeviciute and the meeting with flex workers, we have incorporated various actions/ideas in an action plan. A few examples are: Just to be clear, we guarantee the anonymity of the information provided to the Great place to Work Institute. We do not know who has filled in the questionnaire and - more importantly - the answers given by any individual employee. Again, we hope that you are willing to spend just 15 minutes of your time completing the questionnaire, which we trust will help us identify the matters that you are dissatisfied with as well as those that you appreciate. Let us work together on the further development of HOBIJ. The frequent organising of information meetings throughout the country to consult with flex workers and exchange ideas on a range of subjects. Give more information on tourist attractions and other activities. Perform a study into if, and if so how, we can improve Internet in our housing locations. Establish a personnel association that will organise fun joint activities for flex workers several times a year. We are talking to various suppliers of Dutch language courses to meet the needs of HOBIJ employees who wish to learn Dutch. We will, starting with a number of large HOBIJ accounts, introduce the so-called workplace mentorship. Purpose of this mentorship is to ensure that employees are quickly familiarised with their new working environment. In October 2014 we will organise a big personnel party to which all HOBIJ flex employees will be invited. Progress GPTW: and.. action! As you have read in the article about Great Place to Work, the questionnaire has once again been distributed among employees. For us this is an important annual measuring point, which we hope will confirm the course that we have set, with the ultimate aim of becoming the best employer in the Netherlands for flex workers. A great effort is, of course, required to achieve this goal. Below you will find a brief summary of the actions started in 2013, as well as the actions and initiatives that we will be taking in the coming months. A selection of initiatives 2013: Complaints scheme Besides the study by Agnete, which is very important to us, we have made several other improvements this year. For example, together with the employee representation body, we have implemented a completely new complaints scheme. This scheme describes the process to be followed in case of complaints about, for example, housing or unacceptable behaviour. Confidential councillors have been appointed as contacts with whom you can discuss unacceptable behaviour. We have also appointed an external expert who will advise the board of management in the handling of complaints. The complaints scheme is available on the website of HOBIJ. Study by Agnete Butkeviciute After the previous measurement by the GPTW Institute, the results of which were received in March 2013, we asked Agnete Butkeviciute to perform a follow-up study. Purpose of this study was to gain insight into those aspects that according to our flex workers clearly make a difference. After interviewing some 60 flex workers at HOBIJ and analysing the results, Agnete produced an overview of the key aspects. Subsequently, on 26 August of this year, a meeting was held to which around 50 HOBIJ flex workers were invited. We asked these employees whether they recognised the points identified by Agnete Butkeviciute and if they would specify the three aspects that are most important to them. Ultimately, they picked the provision of information, team building and training. Finally, all those invited were asked to present ideas with which we could make improvements in the named areas. Below, we Suggestion box A suggestion box was introduced in April 2013 . The idea behind this initiative is to involve employees in improving the organisation, and more specifically in thinking up measures that can raise efficiency and 4 save costs. Ideas submitted by employees will be assessed and may qualify for a bonus. Did you make any plans for the Christmas days? If yes, what are they? I’m going with my wife and child back to Poland. We’re going to visit our family and have a great time. I’m off for just one week, so I’m going to spend every minute of it with my family! Ambition scan In the first six months of 2013 we have performed a so-called ambition scan among our flex workers. Purpose of this scan was to examine the ambitions and backgrounds of our flex workers. Many employees participated in the study. It has taken several months to analyse the enormous amount of data generated. Now, with this step nearly completed, we can prepare ourselves for a follow up, in which we will initially focus on those employees who are educated and have work experience in a different position than that in which they are currently active, but which does fall under one of our target markets (food, logistics and technology). Interviews will in the coming months be held with its employees in order to discuss a possible personal development strategy. This could, for example, take the form of an individual training programme leading us to place this employee in a position that is better suited to his/her ambitions. What are the main differences in Christmas celebrations, between the Netherlands and Poland? I don’t exactly know how Christmas is celebrated in Holland, so It’s difficult for me to compare this. The most important habit in Poland is making the Christmas tree perfect, praying and being together at the dinner. Are there any traditional Christmas dishes in Poland? In Holland we prefer to eat a LOT. The Dutch eat a Christmas stoll, roulades and Christmas cookies. What about the Polish? In Poland it’s very important what’s for dinner with Christmas. My mother always prepares dishes that we only eat on this special night. These are Polish dishes which are hard to translate to Dutch: Pierogi (dumplings, made of special white Polish cheese and potatoes), Barszcz z uszkami (soup with beetroot), Karp smazony (baked carp), Sledzie (herring with onions), Kutia (grain wheat with poppyseeds, raisins and almonds). Paying Dutch taxes on your foreign car Have you brought your own car, with a foreign license plate, to the Netherlands in order to work here? And do you intend to stay in the Netherlands for longer than four months? Then you may be obliged to register your car and pay BPM (car and motorcycle tax) and/or MRB (motor vehicle tax). A number of rules and exceptions apply. To find out what applies to you, check out the (English language) website of the Tax Authorities: http://www.belastingdienst.nl/wps/wcm /connect/bldcontenten/belastingdienst/i ndividuals/cars/bpm/bpm Photo: Pierogi (Flickr.com: Anna Kowalska) The tradition goes by 12 dishes, but these are the most popular. More important is that it’s the evening before the day we don’t eat meat!!!! Ofcourse we also have a question about football; you made a major bang in the game against Roda JC. How are you doing now? O, I’m fine. It’s a long time ago and I don’t think about this anymore. Przemysław Tytoń: Xmas in Poland We had some questions for our ambassador and goalkeeper of PSV: Przemysław Tytoń This edition of the HOME magazine will be sent to our flexworkers just before Christmas. What does Christmas mean to you? For Polish people Christmas is very important. We all go together to church. After this the whole family comes together at home and celebrate this beautiful feast for Catholics. What do you do during the winterbreak? Are you still training, or is really everything shut? How do you keep your fitness? It’s just a week and it’s going to be a week full of fun! I’m going to play in the snow with my daughter! Merry Christmas and Never Stop Growing! 5 Best House election September, Behind the scenes October, November In this column we always interview a HOBIJ employee who, this time behind the screens, does a lot of work for our temp workers. This time the spotlight is on Administrative / Backoffice employee Coen van de Broek. An old favourite is back: the results of the Best House election! In this issue of HOME, we introduce you to the winners of the months September, October and November. Every month, we award a prize to the neatest and cleanest HOBIJ house, which is inhabited by our foreign flex worker colleagues. As each of the inhabitants receives a bonus of 65 euro, there's clearly more to be won than just living in a neat and tidy house. Who is Coen van de Broek? I am 26 years old and I moved to Nijmegen six months ago. Before that I grew up in Gassel, a small town near Grave. There, I played football and coached youth teams for 13 years, but had to stop because of injuries and my move to Nijmegen. All the results are available as inspection reports on the English language website Mijn HOBIJ, via www.hobij.nl/mijnhobij. You must login to access the website. I have a girlfriend, Dionne. She also lives in Nijmegen, is a nursing student, and is a serious volleyball player in Wijchen. Despite having to train at least 4 times a week, she always manages to find some time for me :-). September Winners of the month of September are the inhabitants of J.P. Coenstraat number 2 in Best. With a total score of 71.66 points in the inspection report, they shook off Schootstestraat 101A in Eindhoven. Well done! The inhabitants of Eindhoven ended second with a score of 70.6 points, followed by 70.25 points for the inhabitants of De Wilgen 12 in Liempde, worthy of a commendable third place. How did you end up joining HOBIJ? I was an assistant accountant at a large accountancy firm, but the work wasn't really to my liking. The organisation was very formal, very bureaucratic. A few days after my intake interview at HOBIJ in Cuijk, I was called and asked whether I was interested in a position at HOBIJ itself, because a vacancy had arisen at the financial administration. Two weeks later I had started! October With 71.5 points, the winners of the previous month (J.P. Coenstraat 2, Best) also scored well in October, but it just wasn't good enough to come in first, as that distinction went to the inhabitants of Dunantstraat 20 in Roosendaal, who with a total score of 71.75 points received the bonus of 65 euro per person. The third place was for Beekstraat 31-F30 in Asten, with a total score of 70.33. What does your job at HOBIJ entail? While part of my duties involve the financial administration of HOBIJ, my main task is the BackOffice. The various flows are closely related: the job sheets come in (input) and then I process them in the system, which in short is the Back Office part. The products of the entire administrative process (output) are invoices and salary payments, and they form part of my responsibility as financial administrator. November A new top 3 in November. Top of the list is the house at Nieuwe Prinsenweg 7, chalet 29 in Putten. With 71 points for cleaning and hygiene, the inhabitants each won a bonus of 65 euro. Congratulations! This month two houses in Schijndel tied for number two: the inhabitants of both Hoeves 2 and Bolsiusstraat 59 booked 69 points. And the 3rd spot too was shared by 2 houses: Grotestraat 30 in Beers and Loopkantstraat 4 in Uden. They scored 67.66 points. What do you like most about your work? Number 1 is the working atmosphere at HOBIJ. It's a real pleasure to be employed here. And I enjoy working with figures, to make sure that everything adds up correctly. And if it doesn't, then I regard it as a challenge to find the mistake and how it got there. Is it a structural problem? How can we prevent this mistake from happening again? That's how you keep learning and improving yourself. As you can see, it is by no means clear who will win the 65 euro bonus in the next few months! All inhabitants of HOBIJ houses: we wish you great deal of success in the competition for the ‘Beste Huis’! What does our slogan ‘Never stop growing’ mean to you? That you should always continue learning. Continue to grow, not only as individual but also as organisation. Do not stand still. The market is moving, so you must move along with it. But that also applies to 6 Q&A: Payments around technology, nearly everyone nowadays has a smart phone. You must keep up with the times, after all, the competition most certainly is! Christmas In this issue we look at payments around Christmas and New Year. Simon Hanegraaf, head of the accounts department at HOBIJ, explains. Do you regard HOBIJ as a good employer, and what makes HOBIJ distinctive as an employer? As far as I'm concerned, HOBIJ is a good employer! I think that we excel in our approach towards flex workers. We try to go further than just provide work: arrange good housing, good facilities, that people have health insurance, but also that they can broaden their skill set. Reserves: Are any extra reserves paid out at Christmas? No extra reserves are paid out at Christmas. However, the Short-Term Absence (Kort Verzuim) reserve is paid with wages in week 52, if applicable. Where do you see yourself in the future? Are there certain things that you would like to achieve? Dreams that you would like to see come true? That's a difficult question, I'm not sure I have a ready answer. First let me see how my time at HOBIJ develops, the changes that we are going through and the possibilities that may arise. I'm quite happy with the way things are going now. If people take holidays at Christmas then these are, of course, paid. Payment dates: Does HOBIJ pay on different dates around Christmas time? Any special plans for the Christmas period? My Christmas, as is probably the case with most people, mostly revolves around food! On Christmas Day I will be having a sumptuous meal at my parents, followed by a night out at Hoeve in Groesbeek. Boxing Day is usually celebrated with friends: more food, followed by a visit to the pub, probably somewhere in Nijmegen. No, the payment days are the same. For week 52 the payment day is Friday, December 27th 2013 and for week 1 it is Friday, January 4th 2014. Annual income statement: When do income statements become available and how will I receive mine? Income statements become available at the end of January 2014 and will be sent to you in digital format by e-mail. What is your Christmas thought for this year? What do you wish your HOBIJ colleagues? Peace on earth! I wish everyone a great deal of happiness, and that 2014 may be just as fine as this year, with plenty of health and prosperity for all. I have been working at HOBIJ since April 2013 as a practical trainer in the field of logistics. Let me tell you a little bit more about what a practical trainer does. At home in logistics In essence, you could say that I help students who take the Logistics course at MBO2 level feel a little more at home in logistics. Every day, I visit companies to give logistics training to HOBIJ workers who are following the course. I talk to the students and try to motivate them to go to school and make the homework according to the schedule in their course book. Yes, I understand that it can sometimes be difficult to open a study book after a hard day's work, that's why my support and motivation is so important. I make a brief report of every conversation that I know what we have discussed. This year marks the 16th edition of “De Vrienden van Amstel LIVE”. An annual spectacle that appeals to old and young alike. Big names include Golden Earring, Miss Montreal and Racoon. Purpose of a Quickscan, which is completed by the student and his team leader, is to identify the subject areas that the student must focus on in order to complete his course successfully. The results of the Quickscan are processed in a PDP, which lays down what the student can do to enlarge his knowledge and/or skills. The resulting actions are then recorded in a PAP, setting up the steps to be taken by the student. As you can see, we spend a lot of time and attention on student development; after all, having a student pass his course is in everyone's best interest! 21 February Yes, ladies, it's that time of the year again, so make sure that you and your girlfriends reserve this day for the Huishoudbeurs. There, you will be overwhelmed by bargains, the latest trends and professional lifestyle advice. With over 370 exhibitors, you can find everything imaginable in fashion & beauty, food & drinks, home sweet home and family fun. On the road It is no wonder that I spend a lot of time on the road. Places that I currently visit every week are Sligro Amsterdam, Putten, Venray and 4 locations of Sligro in Veghel. Many employees of HOBIJ will no doubt have seen me around! More info: http://www.huishoudbeurs.nl/Pages/default.aspx Important information In this paragraph we bring items which are very important to read. Logistics course MBO2: the Liability Insurance practical trainer We have on several occasions regretfully noticed that there are flex workers who were not insured for any damage caused Those who participate in the MBO2 Logistics course probably have seen him before: Peter Suijkerbuik, practical trainer of HOBIJ. But what exactly is it that this practical trainer does, you begin to wonder? We were also curious, and asked him a few questions! 9 accidentally - in other words without intent - to other persons or their possessions. If you are not insured, you personally have to pay the bill. And some cases, the amount involved can be very high indeed. You can also find these particulars by logging into “Mijn HOBIJ”. Alina Serreti (Lithuania nationality) contact: [email protected] Such insurance, which is generally known as liability insurance (Aansprakelijkheidsverzekering (AVP)) is not compulsory, but is generally advised. Uvis Martinsons (Latvian nationality) contact: [email protected] The Consumentenbond, the most important sector association for consumers in the Netherlands, says the following about this on this website Christa van Vliet (Dutch nationality) contact: [email protected] Mateusz Srokoz (Polish nationality) contact: [email protected] Liability insurance: not compulsory, but absolutely vital! You're not obliged to take out liability insurance. According to the Consumentenbond, liability insurance should be regarded as part of your basic package of financial services . If you do not have liability insurance, and you are responsible for damage, you will have to pay out of your own pocket If you accidentally injure someone or damage a car, for example, the amounts involved can be very significant. Indeed most people do not have that kind of money on their bank account. In other words, you are running a risk that you generally cannot financially afford to run. Complaints procedure On 1 April 2013, our revised complaints procedure was implemented. This procedure was naturally discussed in advance and with approved by the staff representation (PVT). The complaints procedure should be applied whenever you have a comment or complaint you wish to draw to our attention. It may relate to anything from workplace harassment to a complaint about HOBIJ accommodation. The procedure can be accessed in various languages on our website, by logging on to ‘My HOBIJ’ and clicking the header ‘Loket’. It clearly describes the steps you should take in order to submit a complaint, but also what sorts of circumstances are considered worthy of complaint. On the other hand, the premium you pay for liability insurance (around 25 - 75 euro per year for a cover of1 million euro or more) is on the low side and most certainly not a reason for being uninsured. (Source: www.consumentenbond.nl) Perhaps you have a complaint about the cleaning of your accommodation, or noise nuisance, or problems with your housemates. It is vital that your describe the complaint clearly using the form available. Explain exactly what is troubling you; this will enable us to tackle the issue effectively. HOBIJ has concluded an agreement with Centraal Beheer Achmea enabling you, without the intervention of HOBIJ, to take out liability insurance subject to an attractive discount. For more extensive information on this and other insurance schemes, go to the website of Centraal Beheer, www.centraalbebeheer.nl/35950. We advise you to certainly visit the site and, in any event, to take out statutory liability insurance if you have not yet done so. Your complaint will naturally be treated with the greatest discretion! Supply copy You are of course not obliged to arrange this with Centraal Beheer as you can conclude it with another insurance company either in the Netherlands or in your country of origin. If you arrange this in your country of origin, make sure that foreign coverage is included in your insurance. Also keep in mind that you conclude these insurances directly and thus without any mediation/advice of HOBIJ. So far this sixth edition of HOME, the staff magazine for HOBIJ flexworkers. In case you have any ideas, suggestions, remarks or tips for improvement, especially for our magazine, feel free to share them with us! Even more, if you enjoy writing, filming, taking pictures or interviewing people, we could use your help! HOBIJ would like to create this magazine together with the ones who read it. Contact with the personnel representation body HOBIJ has some time ago established a personnel representation body (PVT. Email addresses of the PVT members are given below. Please contact us if you have an interest in any of the aforementioned areas. Don’t hesitate to email us at: [email protected]! 10 Great! HOBIJ would like to thank you all for your outstanding commitment in 2013, and we hope to make 2014 another great year full of opportunities! 11
