Warfield ‘Pretty in PINK’
Chris Warfield and Jason Dunn Claim Victory with Lone Birdie in Shootout
Top: Chris Warfield watches his 4 1/2 foot putt drop in the cup
to win the 2010 SRGC Member Guest. Above: Chris and playing
partner Jason Dunn reflect on their victory birdie while the other teams
complete the second round of the shootout. The remaining teams
were putting for par.
South Riding Golf Club is no Bushwood Country Club. We have no Lacey
Underall or Judge Smails among our members. No psychotic groundskeeper with
a gopher-fixation. But for one weekend, SRGC celebrated the 30th anniversary of
“Caddyshack” with the playing of the 2010 SRGC Member Guest. In the end, Chris
Warfield provided the fireworks, courtesy of a hot pink shirt, a well-struck 9-iron
and a 54” birdie putt.
Play began on Thursday morning. Plans called for a practice round to be followed
by a putting contest and players-only dinner. Severe thunderstorms curtailed the
day’s activities as many in the field were unable to complete eighteen holes. Ninehole scores were used to determine practice round prize winners and the putting
contest was moved to Friday.
Thirty members and their guests started tournament play Friday morning under
cloudless skies and cooler temperatures. The competition within the five flights was
very close, with several flight winners determined in their final matches. Each team
completed five nine-hole matches within their flight, with the team accumulating the
most match points moving on to the championship shootout. The five flight winners
were joined in the shootout by two wild card teams for the first time in a Member
Guest. The two teams earning the most match points from among the non flight
winners were awarded the wild card spots.
The traditional shootout format had the seven teams playing the ninth hole from
150 yards. One team was eliminated in the first round, while the remaining six, tying
with a score of three, returned to the fairway for round two. Several players found
better range to the target in this round, including Ken Kramer with an approach
to about 10 feet. Then Chris Warfield sawed off a little nine-iron right over the
flagstick to leave he and playing partner Jason Dunn within 4 1/2 feet.
Having the closest approach shot, Chris and Jason watched as the other ten
players each had their chance to sink a putt. Kramer and partner Jim Reilly narrowly
missed the final opportunity to record a score of two before Chris and Jason would
putt. When that chance came, Jason asked if Chris wanted him to take the first putt.
Chris told him, “I’ve got it” and prepared for his putt. Outwardly calm but feeling
the pressure of the moment, Chris stroked his ball into the back of the cup to claim
victory.
Second place was settled by a chip-off from approximately 50 yards when there
was no winner in the third round of the shootout. Ben and Brett Candler prevailed
by chipping to within seven and a half feet.
Chris deserves much credit for the success of the Member Guest. As chairman
of the Golf Committee, Chris worked tirelessly for several months with Member
Guest Chairman Sam Kessler and SRGC management and staff to plan and execute
the premier event of the golf season. Chris obtained numerous event sponsors
and used his influence to fill the five flights. Congratulations to Chris and Jason, the
2010 South Riding Golf Club Member Guest Champions.
Our many sponsors play a significant role in staging the SRGC Member
Guest Tournament. See a complete list of these sponsors on page 8.

The practice round format was 2-man scramble, 18 holes of stroke
play. A number of teams could not finish their round due to severe
thunderstorms. Therefore, scores for the first nine holes of play were
used to determine the winners. Team handicaps were likewise adjusted.
* - The winners were determined by tiebreakers stipulated in the
tournament rules.

Each flight winning team as well as two wild card teams (the two
teams accumulating the highest number of match points while not
winning their flight) entered a shootout to determine the Member
Guest champions. The shootout was played on the 9th hole from
150 yards. Low score wins. Third round was played to determine
second place team. When all teams tied, a chip off in the fourth
round determined the second place winner.
