Welcome to the 2014 Book It! for Schools programme
We are thrilled to bring you this year’s Book It! for Schools Programme, and hope you will find plenty to stimulate and inspire your
pupils.
The Book It! Guest Director is the amazing poet, writer and broadcaster, Michael Rosen. You will find him appearing in many events
during the Festival.
Other highlights include adrenaline-fuelled hilarity with new Irish children’s Laureate, Eoin Colfer; playing the Shape Game with exchildren’s laureate Anthony Browne; and drawing the Tom Gates way with Liz Pichon. We are hugely fortunate that the popular
author Michael Grant will be over from the US; and we are also delighted to welcome John Boyne from Ireland, and Benjamin
Zephaniah, whose new novel for teens is his first for 7 years!
Festival favourites this year include Roman Mysteries author, Caroline Lawrence; John Dougherty with his trusty guitar; and James
Mayhew bringing art to life as he celebrates Katie’s 25th anniversary.
There will be a WW1 day to coincide with the WW1 commemorations. Sam Angus and Megan Rix will talk about the courageous
animals which helped Britain; Tony Bradman will take you through the life of a boy soldier; and Jamila Gavin and Geraldine
McCaughrean will discuss their stories of bravery and courage in Stories of WW1. We are also offering two WW1 workshops with the
Imperial War Museums.
The popular Young Writers’ Day returns this year, giving budding authors the chance to work alongside the engaging Anna Wilson.
New this year is a Young Poets’ Day, giving students the opportunity to work with the brilliant Brian Moses and Roger Stevens.
While on site your pupils can also Read Paintings with The Wilson Art Gallery & Museum; jump into the world of Shakespeare with
drama students from Dean Close School; and let their imagination fly in creative writing workshops with The DumbSaint Project.
Not forgetting the chance to learn about authors’ inspiration by following the Discovery Trail around Imperial Gardens.
Making its debut in 2014 is News Academy, workshops for Key Stage 3 students led by journalists from The Times and The Sunday
Times. Also, for the first time we are able to give GCSE and A’Level students an exclusive preview of the raft of events in the
Literature Festival Adult Programme to support and extend their studies.

BOOK IT! FOR SCHOOLS
The Times and The Sunday Times Cheltenham
Literature Festival each October is a worldclass event of true diversity, offering 10 very
special days of challenge, inspiration, surprise
and, of course, fun.
The schools programme is six days packed full
of events and activities to inspire your pupils.
Whether it is speaking with favourite authors,
poets and illustrators; hearing writers
perform their work and talk about their
creative process; or working alongside the
foremost writers of today, there is something
to engage, excite and inspire everyone. All
schools programme activities take place in
central Cheltenham, mainly in Cheltenham
Town Hall and Imperial Square Gardens.

programme is getting bigger and better every year.

have a wonderful children’s bookstore for you
to discover inside the Hideaway. Waterstones
can arrange invoiced book deliveries to your
school prior to the event to ensure your visit is
as smooth as possible.

Schools are welcome to book the Waterstones
Hideaway as a lunch venue. Make an advance
booking (space is limited) and bring your
packed lunches to the Festival.

We host a wide and varied series of interactive
activity sessions throughout the Literature
Festival, with the opportunity to book your
class in for these sessions. Places are limited,
so be sure to book in advance.

organised. We were so impressed
by the care of the staff to ensure
everyone gets to their event safely.

sharing their love of literature at the Festival.

Discovery Trail
Free and no need to book – take part at any time
Don’t forget to take part in the Discovery Trail where authors from this
year’s Book It! programme describe the inspiration and writing process
behind a character they’ve created. Follow the Trail around Imperial
Gardens and answer questions about some of the best-loved characters
in young fiction. Thank you to Dean Close Prep School for sponsoring the

Pupils will look, think and imagine as they unravel the stories in pictures.
Experts from The Wilson Art Gallery & Museum will bring large-scale
reproductions of their favourite paintings to the Literature Festival for
your pupils to enjoy. Watch as the paintings come to life in these lively,
interactive sessions.
The Wilson, Cheltenham’s newly extended and award winning Art Gallery
& Museum reopened its doors to the public this year. History and art come
to life in The Wilson’s hands-on workshops for schools, while teacher-led
tours of the galleries can be supported with themed trails - contact us for
more details. Families are always welcome, with trails and colouring sheets
for children, along with our very popular Stay & Play area for tiny tots.

workshop to get your imagination going!
Linked to the Book It! for Schools author talks,
pupils will take part in activities designed to
make them feel excited about writing, and
confident in sharing their creations. These
interactive sessions will get young minds
working to their full potential and provide
inspiration for creating stories, poems and
plays.
The DumbSaint Project provides creative
writing workshops for children, teenagers,
adult beginners and adult professionals and
is focused on improving writing by removing
limitations.

Tuesday 7, Thursday 9 and Friday 10 October,

These workshops are designed specifically to
encourage younger children to embrace the
language, plot mechanics, and performance
possibilities of Shakespeare’s major works in
an active, engaging and fun way. Workshops
are structured to focus on what can be learned
collaboratively, and within a ‘safe’ rehearsal
environment. Pupils will be invited to explore the
text using a holistic approach which promotes
an immediate and visceral connection with
Shakespeare’s timeless characters.
Drama at Dean Close is a high-profile part of the
school’s cultural life with its three theatres and
around 12 annual productions.

Biography
Eoin Colfer (pronounced Owen) is the mega selling author of the Artemis Fowl
series, Half Moon Investigations, The Supernaturalist, Airman and many others. W.A.R.P is his brand-new series. Eoin was born in Wexford, Ireland in 1965. He first
developed an interest in writing in primary school with gripping Viking stories
inspired by history he was learning in school at the time! He trained as a primary
school teacher but when in 2001 the first Artemis Fowl book was published he was
able to resign from teaching and concentrate fully on writing. Eoin lives with his
family in Ireland.

Biography
Michael Rosen is one of our best-loved and most popular authors and poets for
children. Michael received the Eleanor Farjeon Award in 1997, and was the 5th
Children’s Laureate from 2007 to 2009.
Michael comes from north London and has been producing children’s books
since 1974. His most famous is We’re Going on a Bear Hunt with pictures by Helen
Oxenbury and he has written many poetry books and stories such as Even My Ears
Are Smiling, Fluff the Farting Fish and Mustard, Custard, Grumble Belly and Gravy.
He also presents Word of Mouth on BBC Radio 4 and is a Professor of Children’s
Literature at Goldsmiths, University of London where he teaches on a MA in

Penguin In Lost Property (Macmillan), with Jan Dean; Off By Heart (A&C Black); and a solo
collection, Beware! Low Flying Rabbits (Macmillan). The Comic Café (Frances Lincoln) is his
latest children’s novel. Roger runs the award-winning children’s poetry website, The Poetry
Zone. He spends his time between Loches, in France, and Brighton, where he lives with his
wife and a very, very shy dog called Jasper.

How do I book tickets?
It’s simple! Just use our online booking form. All bookings are
handled by the Education team at Cheltenham Festivals. The
online booking form is at this link: www.cheltenhamfestivals.com/bookit-schools
Ticket prices can be found alongside the information for each
event. Tickets for adults accompanying school parties are
free.
What is the booking procedure?

advise you about other events which your pupils might
enjoy.
Your booking is now confirmed, and it cannot be

We realise that you may not know exactly how many
pupils will be in your class in the autumn term. You have
until Wednesday 10 September 2014 to notify us of any
minor adjustments to the number of tickets you have
booked caused by fluctuations in class sizes. We will try
to accommodate these changes if tickets are available,
but may be unable to do so.
The school finance office will receive an invoice for the
full cost of your booking by the end of September 2014.
You will receive a separate ticket document, which
you should bring with you to the Festival. You will also
receive a site map and information letter containing
important information pertaining to your visit.
How well organised is the Festival?
We think that it is very well organised, and from the feedback
we receive, our visiting schools think so too! Festival staff
meet and greet you when you arrive at Cheltenham Town
Hall and then escort you to your first event. All the venues
are easily accessible. Festival staff will help seat your party,
and are always available to deal with queries and give
assistance. Advice for preparing a risk assessment will be

How should we prepare for our visit to the
Festival?
First and foremost read as many books by the author as you
can! Who can read the most? Find out everything you can
about the writer and then think about what else you would
like to know. Write it down or remember it so that you can
ask the author during the Q and A session in the event, or
when you meet them directly after the event.
Can we meet the author and have books
signed?
Yes, and we encourage it! The authors will be in the
Waterstones Hideaway immediately after their events ready,
willing and able to meet you and to sign your books. Bring
along your own copies or buy them on site. You can also
order discounted books in advance through Waterstones.
We will send out a book pre-order form with your booking

We want to bring packed lunches with us, is
there anywhere to eat them?
Lots of schools have lunch during their visit to the Festival.
There are large gardens behind Cheltenham Town Hall, with
plenty of space for children to relax and enjoy themselves.
In case of rain, there is some limited cover to keep you dry!
Schools can also book the Waterstones Hideaway.

Is there anywhere to park? Where should our
coach pull up?
Coaches should arrive a minimum of 15 minutes before
the start of your first event. Coaches should pull up at the
front of the Town Hall (GL50 1QA) for disembarkation but
must then move on and wait at a dedicated coach parking
area until pick-up time. There is free parking for coaches at
Cheltenham Race Course (GL50 4SH)
There is plenty of on-street metered parking for minibuses
around the Town Hall, but the area will be busy, so please
allow plenty of time to find a space. There are also several
public car parks within a few minutes’ walk of the Town Hall.
