Over my last 7 years working as Principal of Byron Bay Public School I have had the satisfaction of working with a fantastic group of supportive parents who belong to our P&C Association. New members are welcome to become active members of the P&C and continue the good work. Term 1 - Week 7 What's Coming Up! 2015 Term 1 - Week 7 Wednesday, 11 March * Yr 6 @ BBHS - 12.45-3.00pm Positions on the P&C include: Thursday, 12 March President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer (Canteen), Fundraising * BBHS Yr 7 2016 Information Night Event Organiser, Grounds and Property Officer, Publicity Officer. 5.30-7.30pm * BVPSSA Winter Trials The P&C have four subcommittees. The subcommittees manage the P&C’s business and * P&C Meeting @ 6.30pm report back to the P&C. These committees cover the canteen; uniform shop; finance; grounds Friday, 13 March and properties and the School’s Band Program. * Band Raffles @ Services Club * Excursion to Tip Art Show 2015 is the year for our Art Show. An event management team will be established and our first * FNCPSSA AFL Trials meeting is at the Suffolk Park Hotel on Thursday 26 March at 6pm. Bring your ideas along to Week 8 share. Tuesday, 17 March * Stage 3 Author Visit 10-11.15am Rugby 7’s Team Two teams participated in the Australian Rugby 7’s Carnival at Brunswick Heads on Tuesday. Wednesday, 18 March * Yr 5 BBHS - 12.45-3pm Science lessons Both teams represented the school with distinction. The Number 1 team was successful and will represent the district at the Regional finals in Lismore on 23 Aril. PAYMENTS CAN BE MADE ONLINE VISIT OUR WEBSITE “Make a Payment” Parent Teacher Interviews Parent teacher interviews will be held in the last two weeks of Term. (23 March to 2 April). This PAYMENTS NOW DUE is an opportunity for parents to meet their child’s class teacher to discuss their child’s progress Book Packs - $50 and plans for 2015. Parents will receive a letter that will outline the new method to book an interview time; alternatively parents may book by ringing the office. School Contribution - $75 Stages 2 & 3 - Surf Survival - $11 Developing resilience We often hear complaints of "That's not fair!" from our kids when things don't go their way. Year 4 - Midginbil Deposit - $100 Teachers talk about how you can help your child develop the skills to bounce back from Year 6 - Canberra Deposit - $100 everyday disappointments. Sam has just written a series of books ‘The Anti-Princess Club’. The children have an order form, or books can be purchased at local bookstores. Ruth Kell Teacher/Librarian School Donations: Building A Better Foundation The school has established two tax deductible funds to enable parents, relatives and friends the opportunity to make donations. The Building Fund has provided financial support to complete our school hall renovations, install reverse cycle air-conditioning units in every classroom and construct classroom computer centres. During the next three years, the Building Fund will be used to improve playground facilities. The Library Fund has provided reading materials for guided reading, home reading and the Reading Eggs technology program. This fund will continue to expand reading resources and technology for literacy learning. You can visit our website to download and complete a donor card. Your support is sincerely appreciated. Member of the Lighthouse Valley of Schools Byron Bay Public School stands proudly on the traditional land of the Arakwal people of the Bundjalung Nation Wednesday 11 March 2015 Term 1 - Week 7 Social Skills Weekly Achievement Awards - Term 1 Week 5 During the first few weeks of term every class has been looking at our three school expectations: Being RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE and FAIR. All students have been talking about how this looks in their classrooms and at our school. We are now looking at ‘Playing Safely’. This social skills looks at fairness when playing games and including others. It also discusses exclusion vs inclusion. Students will be involved in role playing activities to encourage appropriate behaviour regarding joining in and including others. Students will also talk about expectations about where to play safely in the playground, including walking on cement areas, playing safely under the trees and playing sensibly in the passive play area. ICAS-International Competitions and Assessments for Schools ICAS is an annual skills development assessment program in Key Learning Areas (KLAs) for students in Years 2-12. Each test provides a continuous, independent and comprehensive record of a student’s performance, and maps their development over the full period of primary and secondary schooling. ICAS enables students at all levels of ability to participate, as it contains questions designed to specifically explore both higher and lower levels of achievement. Achievement certificates are awarded to all students while medals are awarded to the top students in each subject, in each school year across each state. Previous ICAS assessments will be given out in a pack to all students who return their slip along with payment, so that children can practise at home. Thank you, Kelly Huxtable Year 1 Teacher & ICAS Coordinator Representative Swimming Well done to all the students who competed at the North Coast PSSA Swimming Championships in Lismore last week. Congratulations to Jonah Caoyonan, Diesel Drury, Seth Carter, Tex Hembrow, Alby Kay, Jack Wilson, Rufus Scott & Milos Safranek who will now head to Homebush in two weeks for the PSSA State Swimming Championships. Good luck boys. BBHS Year 7 2016 Information Evening There is an information evening open to parents and Year 6 children on 12 March. It will begin at 5.30 in the hall and will provide an opportunity for all to have a look at the school, meet some of the teachers and talk about the subjects on offer at Byron Bay High School. BBPS No Lunch Policy Any student without lunch will be sent to the office, this includes forgotten Flexischool orders. The school will ensure that your child will not go hungry by providing a basic sandwich or a suitable dietary item. Filtered water is available at the bubblers. Snacks will not be provided. SRC Fundraiser – ‘THE ODD SOCK FUN RUN’ The SRC are once again organising the Odd Sock Fun Run which will be held in conjunction with the Cross Country on Thursday, 23 April. Next week all students will receive their sponsorship forms and introductory letter explaining how the fundraiser works. Students will have plenty of time during the holidays to collect sponsors to support this worthy event. This year the SRC has decided to put all of the money raised towards purchasing computers and maintaining the existing system. The class in each stage which raises the most money for Technology will be rewarded with a pizza lunch. Only students who participate will be included. The SRC looks forward to our school community fully supporting this wonderful fundraiser. Wednesday 11 March 2015 Term 1 - Week 7 P&C Place AGM Change of Date The AGM has been rescheduled to Thursday, 19 March at 6.00pm due to a date clash with the BBHS Year 7 Information Night. Parent/Teacher interviews will be held during Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 1. You can now book interviews at times that suit YOUR FAMILY BEST. Look out for a note coming home this week with instructions how to book online. For parents that don’t have access to the internet alternate arrangements will be detailed in the information letter coming home. Library News Book covering will take place on Friday, 20 March from 8.30-11am in the Library. New helpers very welcome. Band News The Senior Band, Bunyip Band and String Ensemble have all had a good start to the year, with students being enthusiastic and focussed. All students who are in the Instrumental Program must attend either band on a Thursday morning or String Ensemble on a Friday morning. Times are as follows: Senior Band: Arrive at 8am to set up for an 8.15am start Thursday Bunyip Band: Arrive ready to start by 9am Thursday String Ensemble: Arrive ready to start by 8.30am Friday Students are reminded to bring their folder to Band/Ensemble and lessons each week. For members of the Senior Band, please mark in your calendars the Lighthouse Valley Learning Community Concert which will be held at the High School on the evening of Friday 31 July. ALL Senior Band Members will be required to be there. Our band will be the opening performance.
