Print, The Original Information Technology
Printing is America’s third largest manufacturing industry—employing over one
million people in over 39,000 establishments, and selling over $171 billion of
products. But that’s just the beginning of the story. Print, the original information
technology, has spanned a millennium. It represents and remains the most widely
adopted, portable, flexible, economical information technology ever invented. It
literally touches every human’s life like no other information technology.
Familiarity with print as a medium has devalued its reputation, but not its impact
or significance. Without print, other revolutionary information technologies
such as the telephone, the computer, television, and the Internet could not have
been invented. Print is at the core of all human communication. Our educational
institutions rely on print to begin the process of building literate, learned members of our society. Our industries rely on print to develop and market their
products and services. Our governments rely on print to communicate with
each and every citizen and to fuel the economy with a secure, reliable currency.
Our media uses print to directly inform the public at large of news and happenings. Our religious institutions emphasize the printed word in their practices
and beliefs. The arts and sciences disseminate their great works and discoveries
via this medium with ease and acceptance.
How Technology-Intensive Is the Printing Industry?
Very. Despite the common perception of an antiquated, dirty process—print is a
technologically diverse industry where digital and analog worlds come together
to produce diverse products such as newspapers, magazines, packaging,
marketing collateral, financial documents, instrumentation for vehicles, catalogs,
as well as fine art lithographs. Print workers are technology workers. The printing
process demands workers who operate sophisticated equipment from computer
workstations to digital color proofing devices and web presses that print
thousands of feet of paper per minute. The typical prepress employee must be
knowledgeable in at least 13 different kinds of software. A press operator runs
and maintains a multi-million dollar piece of equipment and is required to have
strong computer, math, and science skills in addition to mechanical and electrical
abilities. Print is driven by skilled workers using sophisticated technology:
iv
2008–2009 PGSF DIRECTORY OF SCHOOLS
• Printers spend billions of dollars each year in new technologies such
as prepress equipment and processes, press technologies, business
and process controls, and Internet technologies.
• A modern, high-performance printing company provides an average
of around $100,000 in technology and equipment per employee.
• Payroll per employee in the printing industry averages around
$50,000 per year.
How Does “Print” Impact Our Economy?
Print is a cornerstone of the U.S. and world economies. Like many industries,
printing has undergone a technological revolution over the past decade. In
transitioning from analog technology to digital technology, printing firms have
taken advantage of new equipment and processes to increase their productivity.
Industry suppliers—press manufacturers, paper and film companies, computer
manufacturers, and others—are still investing in sustainable technology that
helps printers provide their customers with faster, cheaper, and higher quality
products and services to compete with and complement other media.

2008–2009 PGSF DIRECTORY OF SCHOOLS
How to Use This Directory
This directory lists the various technical schools, colleges, and universities

1. They are either an accredited technical school, college, or university;
2. They offer one or more degrees including one-year certificate, associate,
bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral;
3. They offer a complete course of study in graphic communications
technology, which includes instruction in prepress, press, and
finishing operations; or
4. They provide specialized graphic communications training in fields
such as science, chemistry, management, or education.

PIA/GATF
The Printing Industries of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF),
along with its affiliates, deliver products and services that enhance the growth,
efficiency, and profitability of its members and the industry through advocacy,
education, research, and technical information. The 1999 consolidation of PIA
and GATF brought together two powerful partners: the world’s largest graphic arts
trade association representing an industry with more than 1 million employees
and $156 billion in sales and a nonprofit, technical, scientific, and educational
organization dedicated to the advancement of the graphic communications
industries worldwide.
Founded in 1924, the Foundation’s staff of researchers, educators, and technical
specialists help members in more than 80 countries maintain their competitive
edge by increasing productivity, print quality, process control, and environmental
compliance and by implementing new techniques and technologies. Through
conferences, Internet symposia, workshops, consulting, technical support,
laboratory services, and publications, GATF strives to advance a global
graphic communications community.
In continuous operation since 1887, PIA promotes programs, services, and an
environment that helps its members operate profitably. Many of PIA’s members
are commercial printers, allied graphic arts firms such as electronic imaging
companies, equipment manufacturers, and suppliers. To serve the unique needs
of specific segments of the print and graphic communications industries, PIA
developed special industry groups, sections, and councils. Each provides
members with current information on their specific segment, helping them
to meet the business challenges of a constantly changing environment. Special
138

industry groups include the Web Offset Association (WOA), Label Printing
Industries of America (LPIA), and Binding Industries Association (BIA).
The sections include Printing Industry Financial Executives (PIFE), Sales
& Marketing Executives (S&ME), Digital Printing Council (DPC), and the
E-Business Council (EBC).
The PIA/GATFPress publishes books on nearly every aspect of the field; training
curricula; audiovisuals (CD-ROMs and videocassettes); and research and technology reports. It also publishes GATFWorld, a bimonthly magazine providing
articles on industry technologies, trends, and practices, and Management Portfolio,
a bimonthly magazine that provides information on business management
practices for printers; economic trends, benchmarks, and forecasts; legislative
and regulatory affairs; human and industrial relations issues; sales, marketing,
and customer service techniques; and management resources.

products, and services, visit www.gain.net or write to 200 Deer Run Road,

PGSF
The Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation (PGSF), formerly the National
Scholarship Trust Fund (NSTF), is a not-for-profit, private, industry-directed
organization that dispenses undergraduate college scholarships and graduate
fellowship assistance to talented men and women interested in graphic
communications careers. The mission of PGSF is “to strengthen the print and
graphics industry by providing scholarship assistance.” Housed under the same
roof as PIA/GATF, the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation has coordinated
the printing industry’s largest scholarship program since its inception in 1956.
Individuals, companies, and associations provide scholarship funds to PGSF,
which administers the scholarship and fellowship programs for the industry.
For more information on PGSF, please visit www.pgsf.org or www.gain.net or
write to 200 Deer Run Road, Sewickley, PA 15143-2600, phone: (412) 259-1740.

PrintED
PrintED, administered by the Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation
(GAERF®) is a national accreditation and certification program, based on industry
standards, for graphic communications courses of study at the secondary and
post-secondary levels.
PrintED was developed in 1986 by the Printing Industries Association of Georgia
(PIAG) at the request of the Georgia Department of Education to provide a set of
skill standards for the state’s printing programs. In 1990, the Printing Industries
of America (PIA) adopted the Georgia program as a national industry-approved
accreditation program. GAERF assumed management of PrintED in 2000.
Additional information about PrintED can be found at website www.gaerf.org/
printed/printed.html or by contacting GAERF Director Eileen Cassidy, at phone:
703-264-7200, toll-free: 866-381-9839, or email: [email protected].
GAERF®
The Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation was founded in 1983 by the
National Association for Printing Leadership, NPES The Association for Suppliers
of Printing, Publishing, and Converting Technologies, and the Printing Industries
of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation. These three national associations
jointly own the Graphic Arts Show Company (GASC®). GAERF was created to
channel a portion of the revenues earned by GASC-managed shows into projects
supporting a strong future for the industry. For additional information about the
Foundation and its programs, visit the GAERF website: www.gaerf.org.
