21.92% in 2011, up from 14.58% in 2006. Visa
cards accounted for 17.46% in 2011, down from
19.23%. MasterCard cards accounted for 7.87%
in 2011, down from 9.12%. The rest (Maestro,
domestic general purpose, American Express,
JCB, Discover, and Diners Club cards) accounted
for 12.18% in 2011, up from 11.84% in 2006.
By 2016, the payment card industry is expected to
see a cumulative increase of 4.83 billion cards, led
by private label cards (mostly prepaid), up 1.85
billion. UnionPay will follow with an increase of
1.71 billion, then Visa, up 0.70 billion, MasterCard,
up 0.36 billion, and the rest up 0.22 billion.
UnionPay will be the only general purpose brand
that will increase its share. UnionPay cards in
circulation are projected to gain 3.55 percentage
points to 25.47%. MasterCard cards are projected
to decline 0.13 percentage points to 7.75%,
private label cards are projected to decline 0.60
percentage points to 39.96%, Visa cards down 0.79
percentage points to 16.67%, and the rest down
2.03 percentage points to 10.15%.
