VHS seniors Larissa Berning and Zach Garrett were running in the April 5 election. Both Berning and Garrett are involved in band, choir, and Madrigal at VHS. They will be graduating on May 20, 2005. Larissa Berning ran for a four year term against Stephen Colson, Kevin Langston, Ben Adams, Jerry Mount, Steve Widowski, Billy Fairless, Mitch Garrett, Dan Field, Jarrett Johnson, Scott Obourn, and John Summers. Zach Garrett ran for the two year term against Norma Martin and Tammy Morris. Though neither student won a seat in the election, Berning had postitive things to say afterward. “I enjoyed the experience of being involved in the election. Even though I didn’t get elected, I still feel that people will see that I am interested in being involved in politics. I hope more students get involved with government.” Larissa hopes to be involved in more of our local government in the future. In the meantime, she plans to go to Shawnee College and is considering studying music education. Those elected to the school board for a four year term include: Jerry Mount, John Summers, Scott Obourn, and Billy Fairless. by Nate Thurston On Thursday March 25, the jazz band had the opportunity to entertain a meeting in Metropolis that included every Rotary Club member from Marion to Cairo. This was the first time that anyone in this 19 member band had the chance to play these type of songs in front of a group of people this large. Norma Martin was elected to a two year term. The newly elected school board members will be seated at the conclusion of the April board meeting. They will be joining current board members Brenda McKenzie and Morris Mott. Zach Garrett and Larissa Berning both ran in the School Board election on April 5, 2005. VHS Jazz Band Entertains local Rotary Clubs For months now, the brand new VHS Jazz band nicknamed, “Colonel Bernal and the Jive Turkeys,” have been pain stakingly practicing several well known jazz songs over and over in the band room. They have been practicing every Friday since December of 2004, awaiting any “gig” that will come their way. A pr i l 2 005 “I was extremely nervous because it felt to me that we hadn’t been practicing for very long at all, but when we got there, there was such a nice atmosphere that it made me forget about being nervous. I think that we did a very nice job, and I can’t wait until our next show,” said Julie Farmer, a junior jazz member. Band Director Jarod Shumaker said, “I was very pleased with the bands performance on Thursday. I guess they proved that they were worth 160 tickets. I’m really looking forward to the concert, and I hope everyone enjoys it.” Mr. Shumaker has been a teacher here at VHS for the past 5 years. Since he has been here he has established a Concert choir, Madrigal, Show Choir, and Jazz Band. Lucian told students that all young Romanians dream of coming to America . He urged American students to not take advantage of the free education that they recieve every year. Lucian spoke of the American freedom, which his old country is adopting. There are many hurdles and corruptions along the way though. see Romanian on page 8 News Page 2 A pr i l 2005 Divine Stella Devine premiers at VHS By Brittni Throgmorton The cast of Divine Stella Devine put all their hard work into action when they performed their play on March 17th and 18th. The high school had the chance to see the play on March 17th. This was the very first performance presented in front of a live audience. Most of the cast was nervous for this first performance but was very pleased with how the play went. Stacy Bean, a senior who played Marilyn said, “I just loved peforming in this play. I really enjoyed being in front of the whole school performing what we had worked so hard practicing.” The next day the cast had two performances to present. The first performance was in the morning for the area grade schools. Their last performance was on Friday night and was open to the public. Marilyn (played by Stacy Bean) has an interest in Chad’s twin brother, Brad (both played by Charlie Thompson). Brad is trying to find his brother to tell him he has an audition for Broadway. The squad placed 12th in their division at state. They have won regionals the past three years, but this is the first year they have placed at a state competition. The squads cheerleading coach of 17 years, Tina Penrod, said. “It was definitely the highlight of my cheerleading coach career, I also feel Kara Suits will prove to be an outstanding head coach and friend to the VHS cheerleaders.” The Eagle squad began competition in November with 84 other small squads from all over the state. Haley Huff, who is a VHS sophomore cheerleader, was extremely excited. She said, “I was very happy about how well we have done, and I hope we do just as well, if not better next year.” There were many fans that traveled to state with the girls this year, all providing support and an extreme amount of enthusiasm. The squad would like to publicly thank Dr. Trover, Mrs. Mize, and Mr. Hight for attending the event. Amanda Adamson and Brooke Sadler were chosen to be All Star cheerleaders. They will be cheering at an All Star Basketball game on June 24th and 25th in Bloomington, Illinois. Miss Suits, the new VHS cheer coach, said, “I am very proud of Amanda and Brooke. Each student was responsible for maintaining a station in which young students from area schools attended. While doing this, the VHS students were also earning many valuable community service hours for themselves. The insect stations manned by VHS students were: “To Build a Bug”, “Stamp Out Bugs”, “Butter- fly Building”, “Pool Taxonomy”, “Spiders Web”, and the “Waggle Dance.” The Expo was fun and educational for all. There were around 1,500 to 2,000 young students in attendance. Mr. Hight was very pleased with the outcome and said, “I was honored to “bee” a part of the Expo at Shawnee Community College. My students did an excellent job with their stations and I was very proud.” The students that attended the Bug Expo at Shawnee College were (Left to Right) Front: Brittni Throgmorton, Kristin Hunter, Credence Mott, and Chelsy Lovelace. The Eagle’s were in competition with eight other school’s players from Meridian, Goreville, Shawnee, Century, Dongola, Egyptian, Joppa, and Cobden. The five basketball players from VHS were senior Corey Huckelberry, juniors Garrett Davis and Kendy Dunning, and sophomores Lacie Endrizzi and Tori Webb. Coach Ross Hill, athletic director at VHS, was very proud of all five of the athletes, “I think it is a very prestigious honor, and they should all be very proud of them- selves for their accomplishments. To have three out of the five first team girls from Vienna showcases all of the talent that we are so lucky to have here at VHS.” “The boys also worked very hard and had a great season. Corey and Garrett were the perfect candidates, they are both very tal- ented athletes,” said Coach Hill. Tori Webb brought in the most votes from the girl’s conference coaches and said, “We all worked really hard to achieve this great accomplishment. I am very happy that this many people were chosen from our teams. I believe that we really did deserve it.” Above is this year’s All Conference basketball team from VHS: (Left to Right) Garrett Davis, Lacie Endrizzi, Kendy Dunning, Tori Webb, and Corey Huckelberry. I’m really excited about going to state and hope I do well.” Mr. Giffin, coach of the WYSE team, said, “I think it’s impressive how well Aaron has done, beating out all the seniors and juniors when he is just a sophomore. The other WYSE coach, Mr. Jones, was also very happy with how well Aaron has done. He said, “Aaron’s advancement to the state finals is a tremendous accomplishment. He has separated himself as one of the most gifted math students in the state and no matter what happens, the community of Vienna should feel a great deal of pride at his remarkable achievement.” Aaron has done a great job so far, even though he is a sophomore, and will do great at state. The WYSE medal Aaron Chamness won at sectionals. Aaron Chamness with his sectional medal he received for placing second in the WYSE math section at SIU. The Tal on Page 6 A pr i l 2005 Beta Club raises money for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society By Tori Webb Vienna High School Beta Club held a fundraiser to benefit the Leukemia and Lypmphoma Society. In charge of the fundraiser “ Pennies for Patients,” were Beta sponsors Mrs. Joan Clayton and Mrs. Brenda Krueter. The fundraiser was held during the week of February 28. Each day, individual classes donated pennies and other spare change for the fundraiser. The class that raised the most money received a pizza party, courtesy of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Overall, the school did extremely well. With all of the students and teachers working together, the Beta Club raised $810.21. Beta Club sponsor Mrs. Clayton said, “ Thanks to the generous students and teachers of VHS, the fund raiser was a huge success. We appreciate everyone’s support and enthusiasm.” Mr. David Hill’s second block class raised the most money with a weekly total of an amazing $329. Beta Club officer Taylor Ames said, “The fundraiser went very well. We raised a lot of money and I was amazed by how well Mr. Hill’s class did.” In second place was Mrs. Cochran’s class, raising $144.57. In third place was Mrs. Krueter’s class, with $59.85. Beta Club sponsor Mrs. Krueter proudly said, “The students of VHS were very generous, and as always, came through to help young people suffering with leukemia and lypmphoma. Hats off to the Beta Club for being self-directed and taking care of what had to be done.” The fundraiser was held in honor of Joshua Wood, a VHS student and Beta Club member, who has suffered with leukemia, but is currently in remission. VHS Beta Club member Aaron Chamness counts change donated by the students of VHS for the Leukemia and Lypmphoma Society. Overall the school raised more than $800. Meet the VHS track team By Kaylah Butler The VHS Track team has already been off to a good start with several track meets already under their belts. Rain delays have caused the team to miss several of their track meets. The track team is at its highest number this year, with athletes from Vienna and Goreville working together as a truly talented team. The students get along as if they went to the same school, instead of from schools that rival each other every basketball season. The Vienna girl’s track team has been down in numbers at most track meets because most of the girls are active in other demanding extracurricular activities around the school, such as softball and dance. Because of this, the girl’s track team has not been able to run in many relays, but Shoshannah Richerson and Kendy Dunning have both been placing exceptionally well in their individual events. Even with the weather and absences, the girl’s and boy’s seasons both look very promising both individually and as a whole team. Coaches Bob Belcher and Jennifer Stokes are pushing the team really hard and are excited for the results to show. Everyone is encouraged to come out to the track meets and really cheer the team on. After an exciting game the Regulators beat the teachers 58 to 56. It was a close game, even though teachers and students were both buying points for their team. When the timer went off at the end of the game, the teachers and students were tied. The students put in ten more dollars and that raised their score from 56 to 58 making them the winners. The referees, Garrett Davis and Brock Ackmann, did an excellent job and were fair to everyone. Anthony Steinmetz, player for the Regulators said, “Man, I was wanting to win so badly and I am crazed that my team pulled through. Good job guys!” The money raised from the game is all donated to the Relay for Life fund. The amount raised that day was $145.34. The Information II class began with the plan that the plot of their video was to be up to them and that there was no limit on the videos running time. In the class, the students learned about filming digital and analog video, uploading video footage and using Windows Movie Maker to edit footage, and add music. The videos were premiered on March 14th. The movies ranged from a mock documentary to a horror spoof. One of the movies spoofed was by Anthony Steinmetz and Dustin Vinson’s and was entitled, “Dude...There’s an Alien”. The other videos included a Michael Moore type documentary spoof, a graduation remembrance video, “Faces”, and an “epic” story about a bully who meets his match. At the end of the project, the Info II students were quite proud of their work and Angela Funk, who worked on the graduation remembrance video commented, “It was pretty fun and it kept me busy.” David Yandell and Josh Wood work industriously on finishing their projects for Mrs. Clayton’s Video Editing class. Working on his ‘Idea’ video, Brock Watson rolls through the credits on his video for class. Josh Wood and Tara Street work together on the groups Graduation Remembrance Video. News A pr i l 2005 Page 21 Ms. Taylor’s Seniors write children’s books for class By Kara Street In Ms. Taylor’s class, students have been reading stories from the Jacobean Era, including a selection from the Bible and a fragment of the story Paradise Lost which was written by John Milton. On Wednesday March 9th, Ms. Taylor assigned the class a project to be completed by the end of the class period. The project was to make a children’s book and the only requirement was that they must stick to the facts from the stories. Ideas for the project ranged from the disobedience of man and the fall of the angels. Two of the more “unconventional” stories based on the fall of the angels and Adam and Eve’s disobedience were by Isaac Taylor and Aaris Miller. Aaris Miller’s book was entitled Adam and Steve and Isaac’s was The Transformation of Lucifer. Once the project was finished, most of the English IV students felt that this project was a breath of fresh air for the class. Josh Wood commented that, “It was a new and exciting twist on the classic childrens novel.” Josh Wood, Holly Gearing, Haven Hostmeyer, and Clara Kahoun prepare for work on their book. Zeb Miller works on his take of the classical story of the temptation of man in his version aptly named The Sly Serpent. Aaris Miller with her controversial book Adam & Steve. Grayson Summers, Cody Baity, Larissa Berning, Bernal Frederick Thompson III, and Emily Sloan prepare for their projects. Ashley Bowling and Nikki Smith look on as Jessica Moran works rampantly on her version of the fall of man in the Garden of Eden.
