Year 10 Work Experience It has been great to see a number of students coming into the Careers Office with queries about Work Experience whilst others are already organised with a placement and have returned a completed Work Experience Arrangement Form. All Year 10 students are required to arrange a placement for the last week of Term 2, June 20-24. The Arrangement form can be collected from Careers at any time. This form is an official Education Department document that provides insurance cover for students and employers should an injury occur. It must be completed and signed by all parties (employer, student, parent/ guardian/College Principal) before a student is allowed to undertake work experience. With close to 200 DSC students seeking a placement this year, we recommend finding a placement as soon as possible. University Open Days Students in Years 10 & 11 are encouraged to go to University, TAFE & College Open Days in 2016 to find out more about possible courses and pathways available once their secondary education has been completed. On Thursday 4th and Friday 5th February, both VCE & VCAL, travelled to Melbourne for an overnight stay, with accommodation at Queen’s College which is one of the residence options for Melbourne University students. We had our evening meal, stayed overnight, and had breakfast in the accommodation and dining facilities available to students during the University term. Our guest speaker was Beau Vernon. Beau is a Gippsland boy who experienced a significant change to his life 3 years ago. He spoke to our students about how to be resilient, persevere and manage to overcome great challenges. He was an excellent speaker. Both days were full of activities. VCE students had a tour and information sessions at 3 different Universities. Students were able to see for themselves what student accommodation, course choices, facilities and locations offered. At every venue university student presenters were able to explain to our students first-hand the opportunities to be had and pitfalls to avoid. Meanwhile VCAL students went to visit the ‘The Big Issue’ in Melbourne and completed a navigation task (both course work activities) as well as participating in an information session about the TAFE offerings at RMIT. All students learnt about managing public transport, being self-sufficient and generally getting around in the city. There was a lot of practice in decision making, with some learning faster than others. Our students developed these skills rapidly and everyone made it to the train station for the return trip on Friday afternoon at the right time or even a little early. THANK YOU TO…. A huge thank you must go to Mr Pat Dowty who did much of the organisation of the itinerary along with the other teaching staff in the careers team, Mrs Kerry Wales and Mr Jayden King. Thanks to Mrs Diane Croft who began the organisation for this event in 2015. As 10 to 12 leader, Mrs Heather Daldry finalised accommodation, guest speakers and paperwork along with 10 to 12 Leader Ms Jo Brauman and our Year 12 Level Assistant Mr David Sharpe. Thanks to Cheryl Taafe and Melissa Tyrell for their daily support and assistance. Thank you to Leigh Simpson for her support for our students during camp. Thank you Monash University for supplying the buses to fill the V-Line void. Thank you to all of our year 12 students who came along and made the most of this opportunity. 10 DROUIN SECONDARY COLLEGE - E-NEWS Year 7s Start @ DSC What a wonderful beginning our current Year 7s have had at Drouin Secondary College. They are an enthusiastic group and ready-learners. They have started to settle into the College well and are looking ahead to making many memories through their secondary school journey. We loved hearing from some students about their first week. Welcome Year 7! Year 7 Reflections: “The highlights at DSC have been making new friends, having a computer, and having more opportunities. It is different having a locker, having to change rooms every period and having all different teachers. Some impressions of school at DSC are having fun, learning a lot and trying my best in everything.” ally enjoyed re e av h I , r fa so e m stic for nds. “Year 7 has been fanretant teac hers and making lots of new froiem the having a lot of diffein Secondary College is a great sc hool fr I think that Drou the social aspect.” learning aspect and “My first week of high school was awesome! It is nothing like what I thought it would be. The thing that surprised me the most was how many students there are. I came from Bunyip which isn't a very big school so coming here I thought it was going to be a lot more crowded and so many people, and there are, but not nearly as much as I thought which is a big relief. The teachers are great and I’m having an awesome time.” “My first 7 days in year 7 have definitely been different to my experiences from primary school, in a good way. On the first day we received our lockers which was something we didn't have in primary school we just kept our belongings in bag boxes and tubs under the tables so it is much easier to have it all in the one spot, obviously I still I have to wait around 5 minutes for people to move out of the way however so far I've been able to manage. Then on Monday we got our netbooks which was very different from what I was use to because although I'd used computers and netbooks I've never had one that was my own to use so it was very exciting for me. Next we had to complete boot camp which wasn't hard at all considering I've already finished. Overall, my first 7 days of year 7 have been full of new experiences which has been very exciting.” Every Tuesday after school in E5 classroom or library 3:30pm to 4:30pm ‐ $10 per session Support/help with any subjects, Bring any math mates/homework task/overdue work.
