MITA TOPALOVICH CHOIR JOLIET, IL Our Director, Slobodan On Behalf of the Petar Krstich Choir of Steubenville, Ohio we would like to inform you of the retirement of our Choir director Mr. Slobodan Zelich. We will be celebrating Slobodan’s retirement with a Testimonial Dinner on May 3, 2009. It will be held at the Serbian American Cultural Center in Weirton, West Virginia. Cocktail hour will begin at 2:00 PM followed by dinner at 3:00 PM. This will be a sit down dinner with a musical trip down memory lane. Hopefully this time frame will be good for those Tri-State friends wanting to attend after their church services. We hope that you can join us on this day and celebrate a director who has given of himself to help others enjoy life through music. As most of you know Mr. Zelich has been directing our Petar Krstich Choir in the capacity of head choir director for 49 years and has been an assistant director for a few years before that. He also was the main organizer and director of our Petar Krstich Junior choir back in the 1960s. Mr. Zelich has composed 100 musical arrangements for Serbian Eastern Orthodox Liturgical church services as well as Serbian Folk, Patriotic and Love songs. Slobodan has always put the church and choir first in his life after his own family. He has worked everyday of his life to make sure that the Petar Krstich Choir was up to date on all Liturgical music. If one of our past or present priests need music translated from one language to another for any type of church service it was done, no questions asked. If our choir was invited to sing for a special program, if he did not see a song on the shelf in the choir room, he composed something for that special occasion. This was his calling in life and his passion. In celebrating his time as our director, the Petar Krstich Choir is putting an ad book together which will be more like an autograph book for anyone wanting to send their personal Congratulations to Slobodan on his retirement. As most of us know these books are not easy to put together. If you could please have it photocopy ready for print we would truly appreciate you help. It will be placed in the booklet as you want it to be read with no mistakes! All ads must be in by April 23, 2009. If there are any questions you could either call my home telephone 740-264-6924, cell phone at 740-3176970 or E-Mail me at [email protected]. Full Page - $50.00 Greeting book prices are as follow: ! Mara was a lifelong member of the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Midland PA and was known by many people far and wide. Mara will be remembered by all who knew her as a devoted. hardworking, loyal & loving sister, wife, mother, Baba, friend and teacher who always had advice for anyone seeking it. She was a member of many organizations in the Serbian Community of Midland, the Church, the Dr. Laza Kostich Choir, the Serbian Sisters and the Serbian Club. She has served on the executive boards of these groups and always had the good of the organization at heart. Her contributions to our Parish family are endless and will remain with us for many years to come. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Mara’s family, friends and all who knew. She was without a doubt, a role model that we should all fashion ourselves after. She will be sadly missed. We hope that her family finds comfort in the fact that she made such a difference in the many lives she touched over the years. With sincerest sympathies, Paula Esapovich For the Dr. Laza Kostich Choir STEVAN HRISTICH SERBIAN CHOIR PHOENIX, AZ Every once in a while, we encounter special events on our life’s path, occasions that color our lives and make us richer, reminding us of those extraordinary little things that give some meaning to our existence. To some, they might be unimportant, a quick way to pass time, but to others, they awaken special feelings inside, showing us once again their place and reason. Celebrating the 50th anniversary is one of those occasions. Celebrating half a century of existence, especially today, when time is taken lightly and such concepts sometimes seem so undoable…We managed to become golden. Months and months of preparation and planning delivered an unforgettable weekend, something that will be carried with us for years to come. The Choir’s celebration of 50 years of being was truly an amazing one! Even though most of us didn’t stop to rest, we still managed to slip into the kolo at least once, showing everyone that we have more than just one talent! Our guests did not disappoint either! The weekend started on a Friday night, where everyone enjoyed a night of karaoke. That much fun always brings up a worry about the next day’s concert, but as usual, as professional as everyone is, we were up and ready on Saturday! Needless to say, Saturday evening’s concert was wonderful and a big success. We shared our celebration with our honored guests, S.S.S. St. George Choir of Lenexa, Kansas, who happened to be our very first guests 50 years ago. In addition, we were happy to have St. Sava Church Choir of San Gabriel, CA and SSS St. George of San Diego, CA participate in our concert, as well as the Morava folklore group from San Diego and our own, Gavrilo Princip Folklore Group. The presence made the evening even more colorful. The next day’s banquet and celebration of our slava, Sretenje Gospodnje, gave a nice opportunity for quieter good-byes to our guests. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their help and input. First of all, thanks to our chair people: Donna Vudrag, Denise Kangrga and Marti Kasovac for their organization and a successful concert weekend. Secondly, our choirs and folklore guests! They really did an amazing job and we hope to see and hear them sometimes in the near future. A special thanks to non-choir members, who provided generous assistance where it was needed most: George Radakovich, George Vudrag, Brynn Lekan, Dejan Lekan, and others, and as always, Diane Baich’s children, Mila, Alexis and Djuro. Also, big thanks to our Kuma Ruby Basarich and Debbie Lontchar for joining us. And finally, thanks to all our past members who joined us and performed our signature number, “Selo Moje”. It was a great feeling seeing and hearing so many of us on stage. I wish happiness, smiles and above all, many years of music and non-flat tones to the Stevan Hristich Choir! Even though I am just an infant among this great group of people, I am proud to be a part of this group. As always, a copy of our last year’s May concert CD, featuring the history of Serbian liturgical music is available in our church bookstore or you can contact Donna Vudrag a+er 5 p.m. at 480.560.0088. Choir’s rehearsal time is at 12:30 p.m. on Sundays. Come sing with us! Wishing everyone a Blessed Easter holiday. Hristos Voskrese! Vajistinu Voskrese! RECENT SSF PUBLICATIONS HONOR THE MEMORY OF +RUDOLPH KORDICH +Mrs. Mara Yandrich It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of one of our most devoted members, Mrs. Mara Yandrich on February 4, 2009. The Serbian Singing Federation has recently published two compositions In Memory of +Rudolph Kordich: “Kosovo,” arranged by Petar Buha and a new arrangement of “Kolovodja.” These publications are being made possible through a donation from wife Dorothy Kordich and daughters: Dr. Diane Kordich; Karen R. Todorov; Susan Powers; Carol Kordich and Lynne Kordich. +Rudy Kordich was a Charter Member of the Ravanica Choir of Detroit, Michigan and remained an active singing member, enhancing the tenor section until his death in 1974. He served as choir president several times as well as Chairman of the SSF Audit Committee. In 1968, the SSF Convention bestowed upon him the title of “Honorary Chairman” of the Auditing Committee. +Rudy became a popular leader of the Detroit Serbian community as well as a leader on the Diocesan level. His work with the Diocese peaked while our church was in litigation during the church schism. His leadership during these troubled times singled him out with praise from many Serbs throughout the Midwest and nation. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Mara’s family, friends and all who knew. She was without a doubt, a role model that we should all fashion ourselves after. She will be sadly missed. We hope that her family finds comfort in the fact that she made such a difference in the many lives she touched over the years. +Rudy was elected President of the St. Lazarus Serbian Cathedral Ravanica, holding that position for 17 years, culminating with the construction and consecration of the beautiful new St. Lazarus Cathedral Ravanica in 1967. It is fitting that “Kosovo” is being published in his memory, as Vidovdan is the Chuch Slava of the Ravanica Cathedral in Detroit. With sincerest sympathies. Vjecnaja Pamjat. +Rudy Kordich and his philosophy, that we must live life to the fullest and do as much good as we can, was demonstrated throughout his life. He would be pleased to be remembered today by the singers he considered to be so vital to our church. The influence and dedication of +Rudy Kordich is long to be remembered and never to be forgotten by Serbs in the United States and Canada and singers of the Serbian Singing Federation. Paul S. Bielich SSF Executive Secretary Emeritus Paula Esapovich For the Dr. Laza Kostich Choir Dr. Laza Kostich S.S.S. 30 Tenth Street, Midland PA 15059 Email [email protected] In Memoriam Vjecnaja Pamjat ! S.S.S. Branko Radicevich The Serbian Singing Society “Branko Radicevich” has participated in several functions over the past several months, including hosting their annual golf outing, traveling to be honored guests in Pennsylvania, hosting their annual fall concert, participating in concerts hosted by Milwaukee and Lansing, caroling for elderly members and supporters and participating in the program for the St. Sava Ball, in support of our parochial school. The year 2008 again afforded us many opportunities to perform and gave us the challenge of learning more pieces than a choir may learn in the typical year. Brankies met that challenge thanks to the dedication of their long-time members and the added talent that new members brought us. Brankies hosted their annual golf outing September 6th. We say annual, even though this was only the third consecutive year that we held this event, each year has been more successful than the one before, so we plan on continuing! Each year, Ms. Sandra and Ms. Laura Luburich work hard to make the golf outing a must-attend event for both golfers and those who just want to enjoy an evening of tambura music. Without their dedication and hard work, this would not be the success that it now is. There was no time to relax after the golf outing, because the next Friday, the bus was leaving for Eastern Pennsylvania, where Brankies was the honored guest choir of the St. Eijah Choir of the Serbian Orthodox parish of the same name in Aliquippa, PA. Members of both choirs had time to socialize on Friday evening, and from that time on, the bond between the two choirs were very tight. The Saturday concert and dance were held at the St. Elijah church hall. Brankies sang the responses to Divine Liturgy at the St. Elijah Church on Sunday morning. Before very long, it was time to get back on the bus back to Chicago, and while some treacherous weather passed through Ohio, everyone got back safely. Brankies also had the honor of performing this past fall at the annual concerts held by the Stevan Sijacki Choir of Milwaukee and Sloboda in Lansing. It was a happy reunion in Lansing of the Brankies and the St. Elijah choir as the latter was the honored guest that weekend! Sunday the 19th found us back in our own choir loft in Holy Resurrection Cathedral singing responses to Hierarchical Divine Liturgy served by His Grace Bishop Irinej of Australia and New Zealand. His Grace has extended an invitation to the choir, which we hope to accept sooner rather than later, to travel to Australia to visit parishes in the diocese. After Liturgy we met to plan for our upcoming concert weekend and start planning for the New Year 2009. Brankies hosted their 2008 Annual Fall Concert the weekend of November 7th, 8th and 9th. The honored guest choir this year was the St. George Choir of Duluth, MN. Our guests arrived by bus to the Holiday Inn at the corner of Bryn Mawr and Cumberland Aves. and were greeted by waiting Brankie members in the hospitality room. Hosts and guests visited and enjoyed Friday-appropriate foods. The next morning Duluth arrived at our lounge for brunch prepared by and under the leadership of our president, Ms. Jelena Stojakovic. After more socializing, our guests had the afternoon off to either relax at their hotel or take a quick tour of downtown Chicago. Our members remained at the church to prepare for the evening dinner and concert. That afternoon, a fortunate couple who hired the choir to sing responses at their wedding got the benefit of an unusually full choir loft singing responses at their ceremony. Our honored guests arrived back early Saturday evening to dinner, followed by the concert. Along with the Branko Radicevich Choir and the St. George Choir, the Sloboda and Stevan Sijacki choirs also honored us by performing at the concert. Choir director Ms. Elizabeth Neskow gave her annual Director’s Award to Mr. Ivan Budisin for his continuing contribution to the choir since he arrived in America as a Seminarian at St. Sava in Libertyville. “ Prasna Flasa” provided tambura music in our lounge, while “Treci Dan” played modern Serbian and classic rock in the main hall. Sunday, the St. George choir sang responses for Divine Liturgy. The Sunday banquet followed and not long after, our guests were off on their return to Minnesota. The weekend was a success due to the hard work of all choir members. S.S.S. Branko Radicevich (continued) Brankies again this year went caroling for elderly members, some confined to nursing homes, and to the homes of long-time supporters. This effort was organized by choir secretary Ms. Milica Barjaktarjevic and member Ms. Mirjana Milinkovic. This year our clergy joined Brankies on both days as we traversed the northern portion of Chicagoland. On that Saturday, January 3rd, after caroling all day long, one of our newest members, Ms. Milica Terzic graciously hosted us at a gettogether at her home in Clarendon Hills. On Badnje Vece, Brankies sang responses at both services held in the Cathedral that evening, thanks to Ms. Neskow and Ms. Stojakovic, this was this first year that we rehearsed, directed and sang at both services as the Branko Radicevich choir. On a sad note, our oldest member, Mrs. Rose Chuck, passed away on December 7th. Ninety-four years old, Rose was a committed and involved member of Brankies until nearly the very end of her life. She participated in the 100th Anniversary observances of Holy Resurrection Cathedral and SSS “Branko Radicevich” and as recently as 2003 traveled with the choir to the SSF Festival. To quote Ms. Jelena Stojakovic in her email to choir members, “I know that I will miss her presence in the choir loft on Sundays. She was active for many years, as recently as a month ago. She was at every Liturgy and rehearsal, even if it meant taking 5 minutes to walk up the stairs. She would do it. Selfless dedication at its best…” Brankies, along with members of other SSF choirs, sang responses at her pomen and funeral service. Vječna joj pamjat i blaženi pokoj. On February 1, the choir held its annual assembly. Mr. Bill Evanoff was elected chair of the meeting and had the daunting task of ensuring the forward progress of the afternoon’s agenda. The choir held annual elections at the same time, reelecting Ms. Jelena Stojakovic as president, Ms. Milica Barjaktarjevic as secretary, Ms. Lara Lappin as assistant secretary and Ms. Rada Sretenovic as sunshine committee chair. Joining these upstanding members on the executive board are Ms. Olga Kljajic as vice-president, Ms. Elizabeth Neskow as financial secretary, Mr. Bill Evanoff as treasurer, Mr. Alek Lappin as librarian, and Mr. David Sekicky as reporter. Ms. Milica Wilson remains on the Audit Committee, joined by newly elected chairman Mr. Don Yovetich and member Mr. Aleks Yovetich. On February 21st of this year, Brankies participated for the third consecutive year in the program at the St. Sava Ball, which benefits our Holy Resurrection Cathedral’s parochial school St. Sava Academy. We look forward participating in the Serbian Singing Federation Choral Festival on Memorial Day Weekend which this year will be hosted by our neighbors, the St. George Singing Society/Mita Topalovich choir in Joliet.
