Meet the Hornets
2008-09 Outlook
The Hornets look to combine athleticism with balanced scoring in
their quest to regain the top spot in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) standings. After three consecutive MEAC regular
season titles (2005-07), including the tournament championship in
‘05, DSU fell to fourth in the league standings a year ago. The
Hornets were 14-16 overall and 10-6 in the MEAC last season,
which ended with a 61-55 loss to regular season champ Morgan
State in the league tournament semifinals.
Among the challenges facing Head Coach Greg Jackson this season is filling the load left by the graduating Roy Bright, who was
named to the AllMEAC First Team
after leading the
Hornets in scoring
(19.1 ppg) and rebounding (5.3) last
season.
Eight players return
from the 2007-08
squad, including
one of the MEAC’s
most
accurate
three-point shooters and top point
guards.
Shooting
guard
Donald Johnson
(sr. 6-4) is the top
returning scorer,
averaging
10.0
points-per-game
Donald Johnson
last season. Johnson was fourth in
the MEAC in three-point accuracy, hitting 38.9 percent (61-for157) from beyond the arc during the 2007-08 campaign.
The backcourt will
also be bolstered by
the return of offguard Marcus Neal
(jr. 6-5), a solid defender who displayed
flashes of brilliance
on offense last season. Neal was fifth on
the team in scoring
(5.4 ppg) and second
with 53 assists during
the 2007-08 campaign.
Terrence Parkes (so.
6-6) and Kris Douse
(jr. 6-6) return to the
forward
position.
Parkes averaged 3.0
points and 2.1 rebounds per game as
Marcus Neal
a true freshman last
season. Douse, a
former University of Nebraska signee, was limited to four games
due to an ankle injury. When healthy, he gives the Hornets an athletic wing man with a good outside shooting touch.
Guard Jerel Chavis (sr. 6-0) also returns after playing a reserve
role last season. Chavis tallied 1.9 points-per-game in 20 contests.
The 2008-09 Hornets will also feature one of the top group of newcomers in Jackson’s
eight seasons as
head coach.
Topping the list is
forward
Arturo
Dubois (sr. 6-8), who
sat out last season
after
transferring
from Manhattan College (N.Y.). Dubois
averaged
12.2
points and a teamhigh 6.0 reboundsper-game for the
Jaspers during the
2006-07 season. He
was a two-time AllMetro Atlantic Athletic
Conference
Second Team selection at Manhattan.

Point guard Trevor Welcher (so. 5-10) was tops in the MEAC with
a 1.84 assist-to-turnover ratio and seventh in the league in assists
(3.07 apg) as a true freshman last season.
Power forward Frisco Sandidge (jr. 6-6) used a strong second half
of the season to finish fourth on the team in scoring (6.7 pg) and
second in rebounds (4.1 pg) a year ago. He was also second on
the Hornets with a .477 shooting percentage.
