The Olympic Pool in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Objective of the roof refurbishment:
- to change the design and appearance of the old building
- to integrate with the newly built extension of the sports facility.

Roof of the Kirchberg Olympic Pool in Luxembourg City, refurbished in 2002.
The Kirchberg sports facilities demonstrate
the style of architect, Roger Taillibert of Paris
The Olympic Pool
History of the Building
HE OLYMPIC POOL was designed by the Parisian
architect Roger Taillibert. Construction took place during 1978 – 1980, with the centre opening its doors to the
public in 1982.
T
At its inauguration in 1982, the building was described
as follows:
This sports centre includes indoor facilities, an Olympic
swimming pool, a diving pool, a sports hall, plus additional
outdoor sports grounds. The structural design of the building and its landscaped grounds are perfectly suited for its
location – the Kirchberg Heights, which has a motorway
running through it.
The architect designed a group of vaults using thin prestressed concrete (known as fan or shell vaults) which
form geometric spans in the form of a
fan. These vaults are designed to create
a spacious interior with areas of architectural variety, using the changes in
natural light which falls through domed
rooflights.
The light, airy interior spaces, enhanced
by the wide span window bays overlooking the sports and playgrounds, create distinctive character for a recreation
facility which is surrounded by green
open spaces.
Photo taken in 1982.

IN 2002, an additional building called “The
Shell” was completed, also designed by
Roger Taillibert.
It was planned as an extension to the
Olympic Pool and includes facilities for the
National Cultural and Sports Centre.
It houses a 4300 m2 multi-functional
arena, a 1240 m2 sports hall, a 215 seat
amphitheatre, a coaching centre and training rooms, as well as potential for guestrooms and catering.
Photo taken in 2002.
This futuristic building is characterised by
shell-like vaults, with elegant, circular
spans in glulam timber running from a
central point. It is an innovative yet effective “skeleton” entirely in keeping with
the urban landscape in which it lies.

WITHOUT OPENING THE ROOF:
The advantage of
moisture measurement
Finding out about moisture by
taking samples from the roof
To avoid the renovation of flat roofs
being a very expensive exercise, the
correct approach needs to be taken
from the earliest stage.
Prior to any renovation, it is necessary
to correctly evaluate the condition of
the existing thermal insulation below
the waterproofing.
The various instruments for moisture
detection used by the FOAMGLAS®
organisation can demonstrate the
potential moisture volume of the roof
build-up below the waterproofing.
They can measure down to a depth of
60 or 120 mm without needing to
make perforations in the waterproofing.
A decision to investigate further by taking samples from a roof can be made
for several reasons:
If water infiltration or condensation
has occurred, the technique will
allow examination of the different
layers of the build-up (e.g. substrate, insulation etc).
If moisture has already been identified by use of a deck-scanner or
moisture meter (even if there are
no signs of damp, water ingress or
degradation inside the building).
If you need to identify the exact composition of the roof build-up, for example if plans/specifications seem to
have not been followed or, in the case
of old buildings, that the technical
documentation is no longer available.
It must be remembered that the
essential role of waterproofing on a
flat roof is to prevent any type of
water infiltration, whilst the thermal
insulation, which should be dry and
capable of long term performance, is
needed to meet the essential requirements for energy savings in order to
achieve the expected return on investment.
4
On the basis of such an examination,
the condition of the existing thermal
insulation can be determined so that
an informed decision can be made as
to whether or not it is necessary to
replace insulation, when renovation is
planned.
The refurbishment
Why specify FOAMGLAS® ?
The following benefits of FOAMGLAS® cellular glass insulation were indicative in
its choice and application.
FOAMGLAS® provides particularly high cost-effectiveness, due to its long and
failure-free service life.
A related benefit is the ecological advantage of not having to frequently remove
hundreds of m3 of insulation, thus saving valuable prime energy resources
(FOAMGLAS® = durable construction).
Cellular glass insulation remains dimensionally stable under the influence of
both temperature and moisture, and retains a constant insulation value.
The specification
criteria for this
renovation project:
Disruption to, or closure of, the Olympic
Pool had to be for the
shortest time possible
The old polyurethane
foam sprayed onto the
concrete had to be
totally removed in
order that the concrete
substrated could be
thoroughly checked and
repaired.
The outer covering had
to be a copper standing seam roof system
in order to harmonise
with the extension of
“The Shell” sports
complex, completed in
2002.
Last but not least,
3 rooflights had to be
replaced at the same
time.
Work stages
UNCOVERING AND TREATING THE
CONCRETE DECK
REMOVAL OF
THE OLD INSULATION
The bare concrete was treated as follows:
the surfaces were sand blasted, thoroughly cleaned, treated with a transparent
water-repellent and an anti-graffiti coating.
The work was scheduled in April, in order
to avoid condensation on the bare concrete. When removing the polyurethane,
it was found that it had been sprayed with
three coats in varying thicknesses, up to
an average of 8 cm, and that it was saturated over some 50% of the surface area.

Repair and treatment of the concrete
To simplify the removal of the sprayed
PU-foam, the roofing contractor
Étanchéité S.A. developed a special
tool, ideal to cut and chisel the foam off
the different roof pitches.
A winch fastened at the apex of the roof
pulls a special steel planing tool on a
chain, to scrape the foam from the concrete deck, layer by layer.
On the vertical areas, the foam had to be
removed by hand with shovels and
picks. The labour cost for removal was
16.20 € /m2. To hire wheeled containers
for the removal of waste, and the waste
processing of approximately 900m3 of
PU foam, amounted to 49,000 € 4.70 € /m2.
CLEANING THE CONCRETE
After the insulation was removed, the
concrete substrate was sand-blasted to
ensure a totally clean surface. The treatment of the spalls and the steel, as well
as the concrete patching and special
mortar injection, were carried out by the
specialist contractor Cobelux SA.
The cost of the concrete treatment
amounted to 6.80 €/m2.
TREATMENT OF THE
REINFORCING BARS
6
The iron bars are treated with a rustproofing agent and afterwards the spalls in the
concrete are patched with special mortar.

The FOAMGLAS® insulation system
Application of FOAMGLAS®
thermal insulation
on the roof
Due to the roof slopes and its coarse
surface, bituminous primer was applied
to the concrete shells by spray-gun. A
detailed plan was instigated, to enable
intermediate storage of the material
(i.e. 55 pallets of FOAMGLAS®, 6 pallets of bitumen and 4 pallets of waterproofing per shell-segment) without
the need to walk on the sections of
roof that had already been refurbished.
Sermelux SA developed a special
3-wheeled trolley (known as the
“Ferrari” trolley) to enable several
cans of bitumen to be safely moved at
the same time. Using this system connected to a winch, four cans of hot
bitumen could be moved to where the
FOAMGLAS® slabs were being applied
to the deck without any risk to workers. In addition all four cans could be
kept at an ideal working temperature.

7
Professional organisation of the construction site
To waterproof the building, a primer coat of bitumen
was first sprayed on, followed by the bituminous
membrane applied to the concrete deck using hot bitumen. By using this method, the swimming pool
remained open to the public during the work
(end 2001 – beginning 2003).
For the roof, 10 cm thick FOAMGLAS® slabs were fully
bonded with hot bitumen 110/30 and filled joints. Due
to the vaulted shape of the roof, 106 tons of bitumen
was required.
To apply FOAMGLAS® T4 slabs to the upstands, they
were first dipped into a tray of hot bitumen.
8
The FOAMGLAS® T4 slabs were precisely cut, to
exactly fit the base of the drainage gutter.
For the optimum output when laying, it is recommended that stacks of unpacked FOAMGLAS® are
placed to the right hand side of the worker, ready for
work to proceed.
The insulation slabs are evened, using a planing tool.
Application of a bituminous coating in two layers, to
seal the insulation from above.
Full resistance of the FOAMGLAS® Compact Roof
against wind-uplift forces
Wind-uplift testing device
To determine the resistance to wind-uplift
forces of the Compact Roof build-up, the
building inspectors, Secolux S.A. had run a
test. The requirement was that the minimum resistance should reach a level of
250 kg/m2.
For this test, Secolux set up a vacuum
chamber (1 x 1 m) with an airtight joint
at the bottom. The FOAMGLAS® insulation was cut down to the concrete,
in order to avoid it being affected by
the adjacent area.
Using a pump, the air was removed,
thus creating a vacuum depression
inside of the chamber.
As the test device was limited to 750
kg/m2, and the build-up still resisted
the uplift forces at that point, any
resistance greater than 750 kg/m2
could not be determined.
Result of the test :
The resistance of the FOAMGLAS® Compact Roof
corresponds to at least 3 times more than the minimum required.
Metal standing seam A
serrated fixing plate, developed by
Pittsburgh Corning, provides the main
interface to fix the metal standing seam
sheets to the FOAMGLAS® warm roof
build-up, without any cold bridges. These
fixing plates can be used for both standing
seam systems and large-format pre-profiled sheets.
The galvanised steel FOAMGLAS® fixing
plates of 15 x 15 cm are available, in a
thickness of 1.5 mm (Certificate of
Approval ATG 02/2121).
Approx. 75,000 fixing plates
were laid and bonded to
the insulation according to
a pre-determined grid
Fastening metal standing seam sheets by
securing the cleats of the sheets to the fixing plates is a very precise, approved and
unique fixing system for FOAMGLAS® warm
roof constructions. It provides a reliable
alterative to the insulated metal roof on timber boarding where it is commonplace for
the screws/rivets fall between two planks,
rather than being secured in the timber.

FOAMGLAS® warm roof with copper standing seam –
a suit of armour for life
In cooperation with the Trmata company, subcontractor for
the standing seam, the roofing company Étanchéité S.A.
determined and marked the grid for the adequate fixing of the
serrated plates for the standing seam system.
The same procedure is applied for the steep pitched sections.
The technique for installating the plates (with bitumen) has
been tried and tested under all conditions on numerous
projects and guarantees full bonding on the long term.
The galvanised steel plates are spaced out according to a
marked out grid.
A 3 mm thick torch-on bituminous membrane, with polyester
fibre reinforcement is applied, as the waterproofing layer.
The bituminous coating covering the insulation under the
plate is heated with a torch and the plate immediately bonded to the FOAMGLAS® insulation by pushing it with a hand
ram into the insulation layer.
The waterproofing is torched-on without overlapping.

copper clad roof with double standing seam
The complexity of this roof is due to the
shape of the shell segments. Each shell is
divided into four circles for installation of
the standing seam sheets. These are 10 m
long and a maximum of 0.75 m wide.
Current regulations allow for working with
a maximum length of 15 m. As standing
seam sheets can only expand in one direction, the roofing contractor has reduced
the length of the sheets from the maximum.
The internal square gutters are roll formed
off-site using a computerized, numeric
profiling machine. Further, a mobile onsite workshop was installed which incorporated a cutting machine to cut the copper coils into conical sheets to suit the
roof design, plus two profiling machines
to form the standing seam.
Mobile workshop on site, and the profiling
machine to form the standing seam.
12
Fitting the standing seam
The copper standing seam sheets are supported by the FOAMGLAS® insulation. For safety, temporary step-boards are installed on the steep pitched sections of the roof.
Self-drilling screws in stainless steel secure
the standing seam sheets into the FOAMGLAS®
fixing plates.
The actual dimensions of each individual
copper sheet are measured on the roof,
the sheets cut and profiled on-site before
being lifted by tower crane to the roof.
The copper standing seam sheets are supported by the non-compressible FOAMGLAS®
insulation. High compressive strength cellular glass enables foot traffic on the metal
clad roof, without the risk of deformation.
Another benefit of cellular glass in combination with standing seam is that the insulation is water- and vapourproof as well as
airtight; this guarantees that any infiltration of rainwater or condensation beneath
the metal sheets will remain on top of the
Compact Roof and will run off safely.
In order to avoid slipping on the metal
sheets during assembly on the steep
pitches, mobile step boards, safety ropes
and belts are used.
The standing seam sheets are secured to
the fixing plates in the FOAMGLAS® insulation with rivets or self-drilling stainless
steel screws using a riveting machine or
screwgun.
On this particular project, the subcontrac-
tor Trmata rose to the challenge to improve the screwing technique jointly with
the manufacturers of the screws and the
machines.
Two screws per plate were required,
which meant that over 150,000 screws
were driven in. The copper standing seam
sheets are secured lengthwise to stainless steel sliding cleats.

SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION solutions
he insulation performance of a traditional insulation
material under conditions of moisture (condensation
and/or infiltration) is unfortunately not the same as when it
is dry.
T
The refurbishment of the swimming pool once again provided valuable evidence of what everyone should be
aware of.
For economical and ecological reasons,
such as:
The inherent cost of waste tipping and processing;
The global need to be economical with energy and
natural resources;
The commitment to stop global warming;
the choice of an insulation system that furthers
DURABLE construction, should be seriously
considered.
SOLUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION
50 Years DURABLE Construction with FOAMGLAS®
The exceptional properties of FOAMGLAS® cellular glass
insulation, in particular its total imperviousness to any
form of moisture, are a prerequisite for constant insulation
values in the long term.
A great number of roof openings/inspections carried out all
over the world, under the control of independent experts,
confirm insulation values which have not been compromised even 40 years after installation. Reliable FOAMGLAS®
insulation significantly contributes to the saving of energy
resources and the reduction of pollution long term.
A special document on roof inspections is available upon
request.
The ONLY INSULATION that allows STRIPPING OFF
the waterproofing
For flat Compact Roofs without metal covering, the
renewal of the waterproofing is possible by simply stripping off the old membrane. FOAMGLAS® thermal insulation may remain in place, as generally, it shows no sign of
moisture absorption and may continue to perform well for
the lifetime of the building.
The significant reduction in the volume of waste material
that requires removal, as well as the elimination of the need
to reinvest in new insulation material and labour, makes double savings, which means that the FOAMGLAS® Compact
Roof is the leading insulation system
for COST-EFFICIENCY and ECOLOGICAL ACCEPTABILITY.
