You can check out pages 8-9 for a few highlights. For our summer issue, we decided to keep things light, so most of what you will see in this modified issue is just part of our usual departments. On pages 12-15, you’ll find the fashion layout featuring second and third graders who won the opportunity to model clothes from Step by Step, our fashion sponsor this year. Our sports staff wants to test your sports knowledge with a quiz on pg. 11, and on pg. 17 you can find CM’s summer music playlist that was created with the help of some of our middle school readers. Now we are ready to enjoy the best of what summer has to offer, and we’re sure you are too. About CM Conchita Magazine is a middle school journalism and entrepreneurship program that covers all aspects of producing a news and lifestyle magazine. It was founded in 2002 by C.E.A. middle school teacher, Yolande Clark-Jackson and her husband Rodney Jackson, who works as the magazine art director. Students write, take pictures, sell advertisement spaces, host school-wide fundraising events, and use professional layout and design programs to produce a quarterly magazine. The purpose of CM is to spotlight the teachers, students, faculty and alum of Conchita Espinosa Academy and give middle school students work-related experience in journalism, publishing, photography, graphic design, fundraising, advertising, and marketing. 12975 SW 6th Street, Miami Fl 33184 Ph: (305) 227-1149 contents Conchita Espinosa Academy ¿QUE PASA? FORMER CEA STUDENT FINDS PASSION IN MUSIC 6 CONCHITA MAGAZINE · ISSUE 45 · 2014 · ¿QUE PASA? J ordan Sanchez never imagined that he would be a professional DJ for a career. During his years at Conchita, Jordan Sanchez, CEA class of 2002 student, participated in conservatory classes like music theory and piano. “Without that [music classes] I probably wouldn’t be producing music right now. It was definitely a door opener to becoming a DJ,” said Sanchez. While at CEA, Sanchez discovered a love for world history. He liked it so much that after attending Belen Jesuit Preparatory School for high school, he studied political science at Fordham University, in New York. Sanchez deejayed at many parties and social gatherings when he was in high school, but he never took it seriously until he graduated college. After college Sanchez worked on political campaigns for many political candidates in the Miami area. One day, one of his friends who promotes the club industry called him and asked him to deejay at a club that was opening up, called Heathrow. “Of course, I said yes,” said Sanchez, and that was his first real gig. A few years after he started deejaying, he and his friend from high school, Adrian Moussa, started a duo called Your Friends. Aside from working in a duo, he continues to work by himself. He makes original tracks that are sold in America, Canada, France, and Poland. “The main advantage of working as a DJ is definitely being able to travel and experience things on your own. It really opens up your eyes to different cultures.” Sanchez has done jobs in Texas, London, Amsterdam, Finland, and other places. Many great opportunities come from this career. For example, one of his friends is being tutored by Hardwell, who is currently considered the number one DJ in the world. It has also given Sanchez many benefits like meeting people and making friends. He actually met Steve Aoki, a grammy nominated house musician. Now Aoki and he are good friends. One of Sanchez’s friends told him that he could book three DJs at the local stage for Miami’s Ultra music festival. Sanchez respectfully declined because “I just thought that my time would come to play on one of the major stages, so I am holding out for that.” He also said, “I am using the fact that I actually got offered to play at Ultra as motivation that I can work hard to have that happen again, but on a bigger scale.” Sanchez continues to work hard and strive for success. -Arella Zambrano (7th grade) hree alumni from CEA: Kassandra T ¿QUE PASA? Letters of Literature is a contest for kids grades 4-12 in which students write to one of their favorite authors (dead or alive) and submit it to the Library of Congress. Thousands of letters were submitted and two of the winners were 6th graders, Anna Gudfreund and Amy Labrador. Here are excerpts from the winning letters: Dear Dr. Seuss, You are one of few authors whose books I have been reading all my life. You inspired me to be thankful for the wonderful things in my life because of the way you describe the world in your books. You once said, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” To me this one of the most truthful and meaningful quotes that I have heard. You have changed my view about all of the things in life... Dear Lemony Snicket, As you once said, ”At times the world may seem an unfriendly and sinister place, but believe that there is much more good in it than bad. All you have to do is look hard enough and what might seem to be a series of unfortunate events may in fact be the first steps of a journey.” One of the series that portrays this message is A Series of Unfortunate Events, one of the most inspiring collection of books I have ever read. The stories you describe of the three orphans Violet, Klaus, and Sunny is nothing I can relate to, since I have a blessed family, many relatives, and a wonderful home to live in, which is exactly why I love the series tremendously. The Baudelaire children always made the best of it, stood by each other, and used their talents wisely even though they had so little. This series taught me to appreciate every little thing you have, no matter the amount... -Amy Labrador (6th grade) -Anna Gudfreund (6th grade) 22 CONCHITA MAGAZINE · ISSUE 45 · 2014 · SOEAK order the book @ rockorocket.com ALEJANDRA MONLLAU 786-267-2203 [email protected] CERTIFIED TEACHER K-12 DIRECTORY MATH TUTORING 23 CONCHITA MAGAZINE · ISSUE 45 · 2014 · DIRECTORY 2014
