DEBUT
Take a turn in the new cowboy
boot as Cobra Society struts
straight out of L.A. and into the
limelight. A new launch from
former Stella McCartney intern
Alex Davis, these boots have
already bagged Beyoncé as a fan.
Each boot is adorned with handwoven Moroccan kilim fabric and
made using traditional techniques.
Cobra, we’re charmed.

NEW
LEATHER
From outerwear to eveningwear,
leather is cut in every direction this
fall. Joseph gets tough with leather
shirts while YSL flatters the feminine
with shift dresses and A-line skirts.
Leather trims are trending too – on
cashmere capes at Rick Owens and
jersey dresses at Alexander Wang.
And the ubiquitous leather jacket?
A cut above; with bell-sleeves or a
cinched waist at Junya Watanabe.

French designers redefining Parisian

details, it’s easy to see why Étoile
(french for star) is the go-to label for
modern, edgy yet extremely wearable
pieces. Californian girls Gwyneth
Paltrow and Kate Bosworth love the
printed chiffon dresses and sharpshouldered jackets from SS11, inspired
by the surfer style of their native L.A.
This season the roots of her collection
retain a North American twist. Expect
sharp mini dresses in punky plaid, studsprayed army surplus shirts and slouchy
tees in bleached-out leopard print.
How to master Left Bank cool? Simply
slip into a pair of zip embellished pants,

ilm Noir and femme fatales:
what the war-torn 1940s lacked
in fabric substance it more
than made up for in style. For fall, the
era of the silver screen took a victory
roll across international runways from
Miu Miu to Marc Jacobs, with dropped
hemlines, fancy hosiery and prettilyperched pill-box hats seen across the
board. Immaculately simple silhouettes
were a sign of the times, and the
most ravishing, polished icons were
Ava Gardner, Lauren Bacall and Rita
Hayworth. War-time rations meant
1940s designers – think couturiers
Cristobal Balenciaga and Christian
Dior – had to get creative too, so they
made more with less using shoulder
pads and clever construction. Pleats
were perfected, blouses were delicately
draped and an hourglass figure became
the most sought-after shape.

his season Miu Miu recreates
the romanticism of the era
with demure 3/4-sleeve dresses
adorned with sprigs of flowers and
an emphasis on womanly curves with
navy origami folds fixed to shoulders,
and tiny-waisted skirts. Over at Marc
Jacobs, models made like Marlene
Dietrich with sharp white shirts and
black tuxedo skirt suits, as the designer
took on the tailoring trend. And
Junya Watanabe firmly nodded to
Dior’s famous New Look ‘Bar’ suit
– part of a post-war collection using
boned bustier bodices and waspwaisted corsets – sharply cinching his
modern leather jackets and pairing
them with full
pleated A-line
skirts to create
an hourglass
figure. So how
to wear it now?
Either go for
full-on retro
glamour with a
tweed skirt suit
or siren dress, or just add a touch of
’40s finesse to your outfit – a splash
of polka dots here, an embellished
collar there – to channel your inner

I
nnovation is second nature to
Vivienne Westwood. After all, this
is the feisty, flame-haired designer
that brought us punk chic and the
bustier dress. Today, with over forty
years of provocative collections under
her belt, the 70-year-old British Dame
is both a living legend and a national
treasure. From surburban primary
school teacher to the creative force
behind New Romanticism, underwear
as outerwear and politically-charged
couture, her metamorphosis is both
compelling and unrivaled.
Here, we talk to Vivienne and take
a look back at her iconic career.
ON THE PUNK YEARS
Vivienne
with Malcom
Mclaren in 1981
“I never wanted to
shock, it was more about
defiance,” Vivienne says.
“Punk was all about the
idea of taking whatever and
doing it yourself. It changed
the way people dressed.”

ON HISTORY
“My fashion uses the past
as inspiration, in particular
18th Century French art and
painters such as Boucher
and Fragonard,” she says.

to understand the world

cannot do it from here, you
have to look to the past.”

Vivienne’s diffusion line,

women with an eye for
tailoring and luxe fabrics.
“It’s about London life and

says. “From the vintage
collectors to the fruit and veg
men, the army surplus stalls
and the country gentry.”
To complete the Westwood
universe, Vivienne launched
Anglomania in 1998, offering
playful collections that
embody her rebellious spirit.
“Anglomania is an exchange
of ideas between France and
England,” she reveals. This
season sees pieces in vibrant
plaids, high-shine metals and

Frida Kahlo inspire you to clash prints and
craftwork fearlessly to work one of fall’s
biggest trends. A self-taught painter and feminist,
Frida wore native Mexican styles with mismatched
earrings to create her unique bohemian allure –
making her the perfect style icon in a season that
sees crochet take to the runway at Christopher
Kane and a tribal riot of color at Proenza
Schouler while Meadham Kirchhoff’s girls
layer pattern and texture to fabulous effect.
A DAY WITH...
MARY
KAtranTzou
Born 1907, Coyacán, Mexico, Frida’s homeland
was her muse. Aged six she suffered polio, and,
in 1925, was injured in a serious accident – but
scars and pain became subject matter rather than
disability, with prolonged periods of hospital rest
tolerated with an easel at her side. Were she alive
today, you can imagine her using feather-trimmed
blanket coats, see Roksanda Ilincic, and Thakoon’s
sculptural batik dresses to add color to life when
days seem gray. Let’s picture the scene…

Embrace the whole
color spectrum in a
clashing printed dress.
F
rida circa 2011 arrives at the
Tate Modern on foot, her
mud-covered hem trailed
from music festival fields. The day
begins with yoga, the geometric prints
of Matthew Williamson and velvet
zigzags of Proenza Schouler flying
through the air as Frida performs
her sun salutations outside the gallery; the
multicolored layers reflecting her personality.
Entering the great Turbine Hall, she makes
Tracy Emin seem tame and Madonna demure.
It was this mix of talent, style and charisma
that caught the eye of her husband, muralist
and lothario Diego Rivera, in 1928. But today
she snarls at his mention, preferring to inspire
women’s independence, focus on beauty and
discuss fashion made to seduce the soul – not
lost lovers, who included Josephine
Baker and even Tolstoy.
So as you mash up the macramé, clash
crochets and become your own masterpiece this
fall, remember Frida, a brave individualist whose
style was one of her greatest works of art.
