At the world premiere of Martin Scorsese's
kid-oriented fantasy filmHugo this week,
Vulture caught up with Emily Mortimer
(who plays a flower seller in the movie) for
a whimsical little chat about childhood toys.
Only as it turned out, her plaything
memories are bittersweet: "I just have a
memory of feeling very guilty about my
toys," she told us, "because I would leave
them in the cupboard and not play with
them, and watch television instead. Days
would go by and I couldn’t even open the
cupboard because I felt like I’d neglected
them and they would feel so rejected and
awful. And so this guilt became an
enormous deal. It grew and grew and I
could never play with them." Thankfully
(happy Thanksgiving!), her memories of
watching herself in 3-D for the first time
were more positive: "I sort of stopped
worrying about watching myself, which is normally all that I can think about," she
said. "I just got so taken over by the film itself, that I didn’t mind that I was in a
20-foot screen in 3D. It was bearable." For more talk about toys, 3-D, and other
fun stuff, click through our slideshow.

What kind of toys did you play with as a child? “It was hard. I
grew up with four brothers, so every time I had a Barbie around, they’d
cut the hair off and burn it.” —C H L O Ë M O R E T Z
Time is one of the themes of the film. Are you known for being on

I’m on time. Ish.” —A S A B U T T E R F I E L D
You are a glasses guy. Do you think 3-D glasses will ever be
in fashion? “No. Definitely not. I was actually close to getting lenses
that change color, but then I realizedI realized.” —C A R Y

Time is a big theme of the movie. Are you big on keeping

Martin Scorsese is probably the only director who’d feel compelled to
warn viewers his latest movie is family-friendly. “It’s a warning,” he said of
“Hugo.”
“It’s a family film, I am telling you that right now,” the director of violent “Casino”
and “The Departed” said before the Ziegfeld premiere of his 3-D kids adventure.
At a Metropolitan Club after-party, Scorsese was treated like a “Goodfellas” don
as a line of A-list guests, including Tony Bennett, requested an audience with
him.

Penn Badgley must be practicing his mating call. The “Gossip Girl” actor proved
quite popular on a brunch date with girlfriend Zoe Kravitz, British fashionista
Alexa Chung and musician/actress Tennessee Thomas at Casimir in the East
Village on Saturday. A source at the Avenue B bistro tells us it looked like both
Kravitz (the 22-year-old daughter of musician Lenny Kravitz) and MTV U.K. host
Chung were vying for the 25-year-old Badgley’s undivided attention. The insider
adds that only Thomas seemed to have a relaxed attitude toward the young
hottie.
IF THE MAKERS of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 make another celebritystocked ad for their video game, Chloe Moretz should star in it — and not as the
Noob. At the premiere of Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” on Monday night, Moretz,
who plays Isabelle in the film, looked quite the lady in her Dolce & Gabbana
gown, but she strenuously refuted co-star Asa Butterfield’s claims that he was
“killing her — all the time” when the 14-year-olds faced each other in the game.
“He’s such a liar!” the “Kick-Ass” star told us. “I totally whooped him.” Moretz also
noted that she “beat Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in one day” on the “hard”
setting. “So I think that’s testament.” We do, too.
Moretz joined Scorsese, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Kingsley, Spike Lee,
Courtney Love and Tony Bennett at the post-premiere party at the elegant
Metropolitan Club on E. 60th St.
'HUGO' PREMIERE AND
AFTERPARTY
November 21, 2011 at Ziegfeld Theater, Metropolitan Club
The Ziegfield Theater was at capacity Monday last for the world premiere of
Martin Scorcese's latest 3D venture, Hugo. The film, which stars Interview's
November covergirl Chloe G. Moretz and the precociously dapper Asa
Butterfield, is based on the richly imagined children's bookshelf darling, The
Inventions of Hugo Cabret, by Brian O. Selznick. Scorcese's masterful adaptation
was not only an homage to the book, but to cinema itself, offering old and young
viewers alike a window into a filmmaker's love affair with his own medium. After
the screening, Scorcese, Selznick, Moretz, Butterfield, and fellow co-stars Sir
Ben Kingsley and Sacha Baron Cohen joined guests for dinner and drinks at the
Metropolitan Club. Tony Bennett and wife Susan, Spike Lee, Fran Lebowitz,
Albert Maysles, Courtney Love, Stephen Colbert, and Steve Buscemi were
among those wining and dining in the club's grand halls Monday night. It was a
perfect start to the holiday season: gowns (like Courtney Love's red stunner)
swept the floor, ties were on straight, and each flute of champagne received an
encore. The filmmaker and friends mingled late into the night, and life imitated
art: Moretz and Butterfield, now close friends, trailed through the crowds that had
gathered to toast them, plans afoot.

By: Nigel Smith/ Wednesday, November 23rd 2011
Martin Scorsese's first foray into 3D filmmaking, the magical family period
adventure film "Hugo," world premiered at the Ziegfeld Theater on Monday, Nov.
21. Hugo himself, Asa Butterfield (left) and his co-star Chloe Moretz joined the
legendary director at the unveiling of the film. Additional guests that caught
"Hugo" included more stars from the film (Sir Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer and
Sasha Baron Cohen), along with Patricia Clarkson, Tony Danza, Vera Farmiga,
John Cameron Mitchell, Julie Taymor and Tony Bennett.
Hugo’ Star Takes to the Net
at New York Premiere
nd
By: Tatiana Siegel/ Tuesday, November 22
2011
Tatiana Siegel checked in with the two young stars of "Hugo" at this week's
premiere.
Forget the old-school Twitter feed. Chloe Grace Moretz is documenting her every
move on the "Hugo" campaign via J.A.R.V.I.S., available at the Apple app store.
At the Nov. 21 premiere in New York, the "Kick-Ass" actress and frequent
Tweeter said she has moved on to the Paramount Digital app, which manages
one’s personalized social media feed, while thumping for the awards-season
contender (a Paramount release, natch). "It’s like the best thing ever," enthused
the 14-year-old actress from the Ziegfeld Theatre’s red carpet. "(I’ll be posting)
lots of photos, lots of quotes, lots of things that will keep you in the loop with me
and the event tonight.”
For Moretz, the night’s highlights included catching up with co-star Asa
Butterfield. "I treat him like my little brother," said Moretz, who will appear in a
handful of films next year including Tim Burton’s "Dark Shadows." "Even though
he’s only 8 weeks younger than me, I call him my little nugget."
Meanwhile, Butterfield, who was seeing the "Hugo" final cut for the first time, said
he was eager to see himself in an extra dimension. "I actually think it’s going to
be a bit weird," said the Brit thesp, who has never appeared in 3-D before, —
except, of course, for real life.
Scorsese’s ‘Hugo’ Could Be
Huge Since Changes Made
nd
By: Roger Friedman/ Tuesday, November 22
2011
Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” had its official premiere last night, and there’s good
news. After a mixed response to the work in progress version at the New York
Film Festival, the finished “Hugo” is pretty great. Scorsese and his Oscar winning
editor Thelma Schoonmaker went in and really worked on the picture. They got a
more nimble, accessible film. Starring Sir Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen,
Emily Mortimer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Chloe Moretz and Asa Butterfield (who
seems to have grown about a foot since filming), “Hugo” is a 3D treat, a real
extravaganza that tells a great story and incorporates Scorsese’s love of film
history and preservation.
For families, “Hugo” is a Thanksgiving weekend must. But it’s also for smart
adults and kids who want to see masterful storytelling. Plus, Howard Shore’s
score is out of this world. Paramount loves it. They threw Scorsese a major New
York premiere at the Ziegfeld, with a party following at the Metropolitan Club.
Besides the principals, Vera Farmiga, Steve Buscemi, Patricia Clarkson,
Courtney Love, Montego Glover, Alessandro Nivola, Julie Taymor and Elliot
Goldenthal, and James Toback were just a few of Scorsese’s pals who came out
to support him.
Not only that: Scorsese’s middle daughter, Domenica, was there with her
husband of one week. They got married last week in Chicago, where Scorsese
proudly gave the bride away. Time has flown!
Meanwhile, Sacha Baron Cohen, who’ll always be “Borat” in my heart, nearly
steals “Hugo” with his charming and snappy scenes with Emily Mortimer. Some
of it is very funny. Cohen admitted that he ad-libbed quite a few of his lines,
rewriting them with one of his co-writers. Cohen is finishing up his own film, “The
Dictator,” and a cameo role in Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained.” Is there
a Borat reunion on his mind? Cohen would only say, “People really miss Borat.” I
did tell him that Borat’s aide de camp, Azamat, aka actor Ken Davitian, has a
small part in the great new film, “The Artist.” “Oh yes, Azamat,” Cohen said, as if
Borat really missed him.
PS “Hugo” is all about French filmmaker Georges Melies’ early silent films. See
our video box below for Melies’ famous “A Trip to the Moon.”

The Ziegfeld Theatre was the chosen venue for the world premiere of Martin
Scorcese‘s Hugo, his first venture into 3D cinema. Cast and crew, along with the
finest that New York has to offer, turned out in full force to watch this epic.
The evening began with the anticipation of the long walk down the red carpet for
the likes of Steve Buscemi, Courtney Loveand Ewa Da Cruz at least one of
which was (hopefully) going to be adorning the red and blue 3D glasses.
Unfortunately for us, and for them, they waited until they were in the confines of
the theater, thus banishing us to use nothing but our imagination.

Chloe Moretz Talks Blake Lively
By: Rachel Levine/ Tuesday, November 22nd 2011
Chloe Moretz is one of the hottest young names in Hollywood and she also has
some of the hottest friends!
At last night's premiere of her film Hugo in NYC, Chloe talked to reporters about
her friendship with Blake Lively.
"She’s amazing," Chloe said. "I find her an amazing soul and an amazing girl so I
had an amazing time being her friend and working with her in Hick, which comes
out in April next year."
Do they ever have girl talk together? Oh yeah! "Yeah we also have little girl talks,
she's the best. I love Blake. She's like a sister."
Chloe also revealed to OK! how much she loves being in New York (she
attended the Gossip Girl 100th episode party and a Chanel dinner with her pal
Blake). "It’s been amazing. I love New York and I can’t wait to move here next
year."
You can catch Hugo in theaters Wednesday, Nov. 23.
Emily Mortimer On Her Second Go-Around With
Scorsese
th
By: Nigel Smith/ Saturday, November 26 2011
Every year, Thanksgiving brings some of the year's biggest family films to the
audiences and this year was no exception. This Wednesday saw "The Muppets,"
"Arthur's Christmas" and Martin Scorsese's 3D family period adventure "Hugo"
open to unanimously warm reception.
The latter had a glam world premiere at the Ziegfeld Theater in NYC and
Indiewire was lucky enough to catch up with one of the film's stars, Emily
Mortimer. "Hugo" marks her second time working with the legendary auteur,
following their collaboration in "Shutter Island," where she played a crazed,
incarcerated woman accused of killing her own children. In "Hugo," the British
actress switches it up by playing a French flower girl, lusted after by a bumbling
police officer (Sacha Baron Cohen).
"It's a very different guise that he was seeing me in," Mortimer said of working
with Scorsese a second time. "Last time he met me, I was covered in blood and I
had three dead children. But we talked a little bit more and we came to the
conclusion that inside every murderer there's a flower girl and inside every flower
girl there's a murderer. That's what so incredible about him and his films. It's light
and dark. You're given free reign to explore the weirdness and the sort of
freakishness of life, as well as the magic and wonder of it all. One doesn't
preclude the other. And that's why this film is so brilliant. It's the world seen
through a kid's eyes. It's a magical, marvelous place but it can also be fucked
up."

Another day, another Courtney Love boob exposed.
OK, so technically it's been a few days since the singer opted to bare her

While leaving a post-premiere party in NYC last night for Martin Scorsese's new

premiere were two other male cast, Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Kingsley.
Among the celebrity guests at the premiere were Vera Farmiga who opted for a

Adding a touch of whimsy to her ensemble, Chloe paired her dress with
glittering peep toe heels with yellow contrasting trim.
In the film Chloe plays a young girl Isabel, a friend of the titular main character
Hugo, played by 14-year-old English actor Asa Butterfield.

We don’t intend to make any apologies for how much we adore teen queen (yes,
queen) Chloe Moretz and her inimitable red-carpet style — and luckily, she
keeps giving us look after look to fawn over. Last night at the New York premiere
of Martin Scorcese‘s new movie Hugo, Moretz wore a tulle Dolce and Gabbana
dress with a full skirt the exact same color as her skin.
And before you say anything about this being a naked dress, let us confirm that it
is not. The dress’s bodice looks like it’s being attacked by a flurry of little bows,
and the gown is so full that Moretz looks more like she’s playing dress up than
going to a big Hollywood event. But she’s probably doing a healthy portion of
both — and of that, we approve.

In Martin Scorsese’s homage to cinema history, Hugo, there’s a delicious
moment, one of many in this stunning 3D epic, when two children, Hugo and
Isabelle attend a black & white silent Harold Lloyd movie and the actor dangles
from the hands of a giant clock. Of course this image prefigures a scene when
Hugo (Asa Butterfield, the accomplished star of The Boy in the Striped
Pajamas) who works the clocks at Paris’ Gare Montparnasse ends up in a similar
posture hanging on a snowy ledge, hiding from the station’s inspector (Sacha
Baron Cohen). But the delight of this old movie for the children, the happiness in
their faces, is truly what Scorsese is going for and achieves so masterfully in
Hugo, arriving in time for the holidays and an assured “Best Picture” contender
this season. “Hugo is a family movie,” introduced Scorsese at Monday night’s
Ziegfeld premiere, and it took a beat to realize precisely what kind of family he
had in mind.
The after party at the Metropolitan Club on Monday had an epic quality of its
own, overshadowing even Lady Gaga’s presence at Barney’s down the
street. Tony Bennett and Sylvia Miles commanded their own tables in the bar
room as Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola and their 8 year old filed into the
larger dining room, soon crowded: cast members Sir Ben Kingsley, Chloe
Grace Moretz,Michael Stuhlbarg, writers Brian Selznick, the author of the
magical book, “The Invention of Hugo Cabret” on which the movie is
based, John Logan, the screenwriter, and many others: Patricia Clarkson,
Vera Farmiga, Steve Buscemi, Bob Balaban, Ric Ocasek and Paulina
Porizkova, Paul Haggis, Courtney Love, Albert Maysles, Tony Danza,
Montego Glover, Amir Bar-Lev, all congratulated “Marty” as he took honors
with editor Thelma Schoonmaker by his side.
By happy circumstance, The Artist is a black & white silent film, and the very few
parts that are not play brilliantly with the classics of that era. Many are now
asking, is The Artist a masterpiece? At last week’s premiere party at 44 at the
Royalton, sponsored by Hugo Boss and HP, the stars Jean Dujardin, Berenice
Bejo and her husband, director Michel Hazanavicius chatted with well-wishers,
some struggling with their French. Producer Thomas Langmann spoke about
the luscious elegance of the black & white, achieved by dipping color out. In one
serendipitous moment observed in the ladies’ room, Parker Posey broke into a
dance duet with Penelope Ann Miller. You’ve got to love a movie that brings
such bonhomie.

‘HUGO’ KIDS, MEET X-RATED COURTNEY
“Hugo” may technically be a kids’ movie, but there was some adult content at the
film’s New York premiere after-party. As director Martin Scorsese held court at
the Metropolitan Club with the film’s rising stars Asa Butterfield and Chloe
Moretz (pictured), both 14, Courtney Love, in a stunning, plunging red gown,
accidentally flashed partygoers, including Tony Bennett, Sacha Baron
Cohen(who chatted with Ben Kingsley) and Chris Noth. “Her right boob kept
popping out to say hi,” our spy said. In other drama, 16-year-old actor Josh
Flitter showed up with standout “The Voice”contestant Raquel Castro.

Hugo premiere which had been the talk of the town where it had been held
recently attracted many crowds so Hugo premiere can be mentioned as an event
that had offered plenty of entertainment for viewers. Many of the star studded
cast had made sure to be there at the event and they had been lucky enough to
take glimpses of some of the leading stars of the motion picture. Among the
arrivals on the red carpet a not able one had been that of Chloe Moretz who is
the young leading lady of the motion picture and to attend this fine event she had
made sure to look great. Opting for a dress that had been fashionable the young
starlet looked simply amazing on the red carpet.
Hugo premiere had many stars attending the event and with their arrivals the
event had turned out to be simply entertaining. Another star who looked great on
the red carpet had been Emily Mortimer who had been one of the guest stars at
the event and she had sported a dress that had been long. Another star actress
who had looked gorgeous had been Vera Farmiga and she had looked
wonderful in a short black dress. The event seems to have attracted many
notable stars to the event and she had looked most amazing and awesome in a
long black dress. The actress had been Patricia Clarkson.
Hugo premiere had many others as well and among them had been Sacha
Baron Cohen who is one of the main stars of the motion picture. He had opted
for a black color full suit and handsome look had been truly dashing. Another co
star who had attended the event and at the same time managed to look dapper
had been award winner actor Ben Kingsley who looked fine accompanied by the
guest of Daniela Lavender who looked simply amazing in long gold color dress.
So with the arrivals of these stars it had not been hard to make the event to be
most interesting.

The 14-year-old actress, who completed her look with Sergio Rossi heels, sat
down on the set to explain what the film is really about.
“It’s about Hugo Cabret. His father dies and he lives on his own basically. He
goes to live with his uncle and then he disappears. He ends up winding the
clocks in this Parisian train station in the 1930s,” Chloe shared.
She added, “Then he runs into my character [Isabelle], and we go on this crazy
adventure of finding out both of our lives and we find out a lot more then we ever

Hugo tells the story of an orphan boy living a secret life in the walls of a Paris
train station. With the help of an eccentric girl, he searches for the answer to a
mystery linking the father he recently lost, the ill-tempered toy shop owner living
below him and a heart shaped lock, seemingly without a key. Based on Brian
Selznick’s award winning and imaginative New York Times bestseller, The
Invention of Hugo Cabret, this magical tale is Academy Award-winner Martin
Scorsese’s first film shot in 3D.
Martin Scorsese’s Hugord
By: Liz Smith/ Wednesday, November 23 2011
“BECOME YOUR dreams!” says Ben Kingsley toward the emotional climax
of Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo.” This is the great director’s first children’s film ever,
and his first PG-rated effort in 18 years.
Kingsley is addressing the magic of movies, how we give ourselves up to the
fantasies of the screen; and just how important those fantasies are. This
sentiment certainly applies to Scorsese himself, a man who worships the art of
filmmaking and is dedicated to its preservation.
“Hugo” had its New York premiere on Monday at the Ziegfeld Theater, bringing
out Marty and some of his stars — Sir Ben, Sacha Baron Cohen, and two
charming newcomers — Asa Butterfield, who plays Hugo Cabret and Chloe
Moretz, the girl who befriends him and helps him unravel a great mystery.
Based on the book by Brian Selznick, “Hugo” tells a small, touching tale — a
boy, orphaned and abandoned, living behind the walls of a railway station,
repairing clocks. He meets Isabelle, who protects him and together they discover
a wonderful secret. It’s lovely. Basically it’s Italian neo-realism, no need for
whistles or bells. But here we have this little story magnified immensely, huge in
scope, photographed needlessly and intrusively in 3-D. This process, which I still
feel is a pointless gimmick — as it was originally, back in the 1950’s — might be
okay for other movies, but it robs “Hugo” of its intimacy and immediacy. Within
the story itself, snippets of great old silent movies are shown — I won’t be a
spoiler and reveal why. But the inclusion of these fantastical vintage films seems
to mock the ponderous process of 3-D. I am probably alone in this critique.
(Although similar murmurings were heard as the audience filed out.)
I can say, with great enthusiasm, that all the performances are marvelous, with a
whimsical surprise from Sacha Baron Cohen as the awful railway policeman who
captures little runaways and sends them off to orphanages. But perhaps he is not
so awful after all? As for the two youngsters, the owl-eyed Mr. Butterfield is great,
but maybe too specific-looking. Miss Moretz, only 15, and already possessed of a
distinct, precocious allure, might have quite a future.
And I loved the choice of Manhattan’s spectacular, fabled Metropolitan Club as
the post-screening party place. With its marble walls and colonnades, high
embossed ceilings, velvet-covered steps and intricate chandeliers, it was
reminiscent of one of Marty’s most beloved movies, “Age of Innocence.” But the
sweeping vistas and the variety of textures everywhere had a distinctly 3-D vibe!
The party was great, packed with glitterati, with mountains of food — including
sinful desserts — served.
However, the evening’s most striking aspect was that its hostess, New York’s
queen of the night Peggy Siegal, had lost her voice. Her legendary, nonstop
chatter was silenced. However, she did well with hand-signals and facial
expressions, the meanings of which could not be mistaken! A born actress, Miss
Siegal.
