are honored to welcome back former Portland Japanese Garden
February 22.
Drawing on his own experience as a young man in post-World War
II Japan and America, Mr. Kurisu will discuss the naturalistic garden
styles that have emerged in Japan, the role of such landscapes in society,
and their evolution in contemporary life. This lecture explores several
essential concepts of space and energy in Japanese garden design and
how Japanese gardens can address fundamental needs of individuals,
communities and of the society as a whole.
Mr. Kurisu is the owner of Kurisu International Inc. based in Portland
and is one of the foremost Japanese garden designers in North America
today. He served as the Portland Japanese Garden Director from 19681973 and while here he enhanced the flow of the stream that runs beneath
the Moon Bridge and contributed major stone work to several areas of
the Garden, including the garden referred to as the DeWeese Hill. In
1997, he worked with current Garden Curator Sadafumi Uchiyama on
the dramatic restoration of the Heavenly Falls in the Lower Pond.

AROUND THE GARDEN
OPEN PAVILION
FROM THE CEO
Dear Garden Members,
As I talk with people around
the world, I am always humbled
to note how often the Portland
Japanese Garden is recognized
as a world-class organization.
Professionals and enthusiasts
alike have commented on its
beauty, its authenticity and
the expertise with which it is
operated. And that is why I
wanted to take a moment to say how grateful I am for the
wonderful staff we have here at the Garden.
We are fortunate to have a mix of people from around the
world who bring with them diverse skills, experiences and
talents. Added together, it enables us to pursue cross-cultural
endeavors in a uniquely genuine way. We are able to be a
world-class organization only through the leadership and
dedication of every person who works here.
As many of you know, this Garden is a labor of love that
requires time, energy, heart and soul. Beyond bringing firstclass skills within their respective departments, our staff
dedicates themselves to learning the culture, the practices
and the intentions of a Japanese garden.
This kind of dedication requires nontraditional hours,
ongoing education, and an open mind. That commitment is
seen in every element of the Garden. In this past year alone,
our staff have given lectures around the world, overseen three
major Garden improvements, coordinated over 200 Garden
events, served over 8,000 members, worked with hundreds of
volunteers, and hosted world-renowned guests & artists—all
while setting records in attendance and retail sales.
For me though, beyond being colleagues, these people are
also a lot of fun to be with and together we’ve grown to be a
close-knit group who look after each other both at and outside
of work. Most recently, I was especially impressed to learn
that over half of our staff had contributed back to the Garden
during our Annual Fund drive in December in support or the
Garden and its mission. What a testament to their dedication
and I couldn’t ask for a better group of people!
Sincerely,
Stephen D. Bloom
Chief Executive Officer

HINA MATSURI: THE DOLL FESTIVAL
February 26-March 3
Garden Hours
Mark the changing of the season with our annual celebration of Hina Matsuri, the Doll
Festival. Families are invited to visit the Pavilion where girls, boys and adults can all
be photographed in a traditional cotton yukata with the Garden’s special collection of
handmade Hina Ningyo dolls, gifted to the Garden by the Loen and Sho Dozono Family.
Hina Ningyo dolls are displayed in a 7-tiered display to represent the imperial family and
their courtiers. The tradition started as a way of warding off evil spirits, with the dolls
acting as charms. Today families join together to celebrate the health and happiness of
their girls and spring is welcomed in by all.
On Sunday, March 1 from noon to 3pm the displays will be accompanied by an origami
workshop led by children’s art instructor Yuki Martin, as well as a tea tasting with Jasmine
Pearl and sweets for sale from Yume Confections.
The William G. Gilmore Foundation sponsors our Cultural, Arts, and Education
programming for 2015. And a special thanks to Jasmine Pearl for donating the tea
for this event.

GARDENERS’
CORNER
EDUCATION AND INSPIRATION
By Adam Hart
This past November, I traveled to Kyoto to complete a two-week
internship with the Ueya Kato Zoen Landscape Company, one of
the premiere Japanese garden landscape companies of Japan. Its
President, Tomoki Kato, Ph.D., has been an important supporter
of the Portland Japanese Garden’s efforts to educate about the
Japanese Garden art form. His company has been in business since
1848 and they take care of some of the most well known landscapes
in the Kyoto area.
Under Kato-san’s guidance, I worked with the crew of approximately
70 employees every day for the span of two weeks. My day-to-day
experiences were varied and every day I was taken to a different site.
Some days I worked in quiet, private gardens like the one pictured
here. This was a private garden in Kyoto called Kaiuso. I was working
with a gardener named Hugo Torii who has been with the company
for 12 years. I spent much of my time in Kyoto under his tutelage.
It was pine pruning season in Kyoto so on this particular day, we
spent the majority of our day discussing the best way to approach
the aesthetics of pruning Japanese black pines. The pictured pine
tree was fairly small, so it only took a couple hours to prune but
the lesson lasted all day.
Other days I found myself in large sprawling parks. I was even given
the opportunity to work in some historic temple gardens, much to
my surprise. Besides pine pruning, my hands-on training was robust
and ranged from garden maintenance such as waterway cleaning
and moss renovation to garden construction projects including paver
installation and boulder-setting.
I worked with many skilled professionals, all of whom were willing
and excited to share their knowledge with me. To see the ease and
efficiency with which they worked was awe-inspiring. The level of
cleanliness and organization that was maintained was unmatched.
When Kato-san was last visiting Portland, he said “it takes 200
years to become an expert gardener of Japanese gardens.” He meant
that there’s no way to learn all there is to know about Japanese
Gardening in such a short lifespan. His message was to encourage
Adam Hart and Hugo Torii tending Kaiuso in Kyoto

us all to learn from each other, each and every day, since our time
here on Earth is so limited. It was great to be surrounded by so
many knowledgeable people while I was in Kyoto. I learned so
much in a two week time, and hopefully I passed on a little bit of
knowledge to my Japanese counterparts as well.
In addition to improving my gardening skills, I was able to immerse
myself in the culture of Japan. I went to tool shops where pruners
and saws are still made by hand. I learned traditional crafts
including making rice straw rope and drying persimmons for New
Year’s decorations. Inspiration overwhelmed me as I visited many
of the famous gardens throughout Kyoto. It was autumn, and fall
color was at its peak. There were breathtaking views to be found
everywhere I looked.
In my time there, I was educated on much of the social culture of
Japan, from the proper way to greet my coworkers every morning
to the food etiquette at dinner time and everything in between. In
many ways, this feels like the most valuable gift I was given. Japan’s
society is the kindest I’ve experienced. My reverence for the people,
places, and traditions held within the small island country has
grown exponentially. I already look forward to my next trip. Until
then, I will focus on bringing everything I learned on my trip into
my daily work at this amazing garden.
Funding for this hands-on training is thanks to generous donations and
the creation of the Gardener Training Fund established by late Golden
Crane Member David Easly. His visionary support for education provides
opportunities for gardeners to travel to the birthplace of the Japanese garden
artform and return to Portland to share their knowledge with others at the
Garden. Additional gifts to the David Easly Gardener Training Fund are
gratefully welcomed. Please email us at development@japanesegarden.

MEMBER PROFILE: THE PARAMOUNT HOTEL
The Portland Japanese Garden is excited to welcome The Paramount
Hotel as the 2015 Preferred Hotel Sponsor of the Garden.
Over the years, many of our Japanese guests have stayed at The
Paramount Hotel when they are in Portland to visit the Garden.
The local atmosphere in the heart of the city, just over 2 miles away
from the Garden, and hospitable service make it an ideal place of
respite. We have been pleased with the service they provide our
guests, as we always receive positive feedback, and the ease at
which they are willing to accommodate our requests.
Local members might also be interested in The Paramount Hotel’s
restaurant, Swank, which sources its menu from fresh, local products.
And in true Portland spirit, they have a well-stocked moonshine
whiskey bar featuring prohibition-style cocktails.
The Paramount Hotel has consistently provided reliable quality for
our guests, and the Garden is thrilled to be partnering with this
t
distinguished local business.
