IN THE NEWS First of Ten Ferrari F60 America Delivered in Florida The first Ferrari F60 America has been delivered to a client in Palm Beach this weekend. Ferrari of San Francisco sold one of the ten cars to a lucky US customer. He received his car at the Cavallino Classic event held this weekend at The Breakers, Palm Beach. The Ferrari F60 America was released in October 2014 to celebrate Ferrari’s 60th year in North America. It seems that the project was put on hold for a while as it seems the first cars are only now reaching customers. The car is based upon the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and features Ferrari’s V12 power plant. The engine is the same 6.3-litre V12 engine as the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta with power increased to around 770 hp and 520 lb-ft of torque. It reaches 100 km/h from a standstill in 3.1 seconds. The paint scheme is a nod to Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team. This car adds a touch of red to the central white stripe. Chinetti was the first official Ferrari dealer in the US. The looks of the car are inspired by the 1967 Ferrari 275 GTS4 NART Spider. Customers have paid up to $2.5 million for the privilege of purchasing the F60 America, making it more expensive than the LaFerrari! The frontengined turbocharged supercar receives Ferrari’s famous handling treatment, improving performance and drivability. Handling Speciale is in reality an optional extra. The 2016 Ferrari California T Handling Speciale will get specific calibrations to make the most out of the ride. The manettino’s Sport mode receives an overhaul with new damper settings and modified springs that make the car stiffer. Although ride comfort will see some improvement, it is feedback and sensation where owners will really see the difference. A new engine sound has been programmed into the 2016 Ferrari California T Handling Speciale. The gear-shift mapping for the Sport mode has been modified for example, resulting in faster gear changes both on up and down-shifts. Overall, the HS package includes 16% stiffer front springs and 19% stiffer rear springs. Dampers receive new mappings and a revised F1-Trac logic helps ensure better acceleration. The new sound is generated by a new exhaust system featuring two primary pipes and a new geometry, specifically designed with the exhaust note at the forefront. For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] January 29th, 2016 To tell the 2016 Ferrari California T Handling Speciale apart on an aesthetic level, Ferrari include a new front grille in matte Grigio Ferro Met and a rear diffuser in the same colour with matte black fences and matte black tailpipes. A special plaque in the cockpit also displays the unique HS optional package. The 2016 Ferrari California T Handling Speciale will be in display at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show 2016. It will be available to order in German markets at a cost of 6,902 euros inclusive of local taxes. It's a 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider, and it's going up for sale at Artcurial in Paris next month, with an estimate topping $30 million. Though it may look a lot like the iconic 250 Testa Rossa that came out the same year, chassis number 0674 actually started out its life as a 315 S and fitted with coachwork by Scaglietti. After finishing sixth at Sebring and second in the Mille Miglia, it returned to Maranello and was upgraded to 335 S spec. The 3.8-liter V12 was enlarged to 4.1 liters, and its output swelled from 360 horsepower to nearly 400. Mike Hawthorn drove it at Le Mans that year, leading the race and setting a lap record before dropping down to fifth with mechanical troubles. It went on to compete in several more events as part of the factory Scuderia, helping it secure the title in 1957. It was then sold to famed US importer Luigi Chinetti who campaigned it for another couple of years, winning (among others) the 1958 Cuba Grand Prix with Stirling Moss and Masten Gregory behind the wheel. For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] January 29th, 2016 The 335 S was ultimately sold to noted collector Pierre Bardinon. Asked once why he didn't have a factory collection, Enzo Ferrari once said he had "no need" because "Bardinon has done it for me." That's high praise indeed, and the car remained one of the highlights of the Bardinon collection for over 40 years. Having liquidated the Baillon barn find collection last year, the auction house estimates that this 335 S will sell for $30-34 million. That would not only set the bar very high for the year ahead, but could make it one of the highest prices ever paid for a car at auction. 2014 saw a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa sell for nearly $40 million, and a 250 GTO for $38 million. Behind them is Fangio's Mercedes W196 Silver Arrow that sold for nearly $30 million in 2013. The auction is set to take place during the Salon Retromobile in the French capital on February 5th. Among the other Prancing Horses that Artcurial has corralled for the event include a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta (estimated at $10–13.2m), Gianni Agnelli's unique 1986 Ferrari Testrossa Spider ($750k-1m), and a 1962 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series 2 that belonged to the King of Morocco ($1.5-1.9m). So if it's a multi-million-dollar Ferrari you're after, Paris will be the place to be in a couple of weeks. (Noah Joseph) Formula 1 Cars Could Get Closed Cockpit By 2017 Big changes could be in store with the design of Formula One cars beginning in 2017. F1 drivers have long pushed for the introduction of a “halo” closed cockpit design and, if they have their way, the new safety measure could be put in place in time for the 2017 season. Drivers have become increasingly adamant of having a closed cockpit on the cars in the wake of the deaths of Jules Bianchi and Justin Wilson, both of whom lost their lives because of head injuries they sustained while racing in Formula One and IndyCar, respectively. For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] January 29th, 2016 Grand Prix Drivers’ Association chairman Alex Wurz is calling for the implementation of a halo-style bar that wraps around the head but does not limit the driver’s visibility. Speaking with the BBC, Wurz emphasized the clear need to have the safety feature installed to help improve head protection and reduce the risk of drivers being exposed to the elements in the event of a crash. A large contingent of F1 drivers are reportedly supporting this move and are calling Formula One’s technical committee to approve a design in time for the 2017 season. That would give teams enough time to develop a car that would include a closed cockpit. “Obviously structural changes are required to the chassis but, with almost a one-year lead time, I don’t see any technical person speaking against such substantial safety improvements,” Wurz told the BBC. The deaths of Bianchi and Wilson triggered this call for increased head safety, but the two tragic crashes are just a few of the many incidents that have resulted in drivers sustaining serious injuries to the head because of the lack of protection in that area. Back in 2009, F1 driver Felipe Massa suffered severe injuries after getting stuck in the head by a suspension spring. (Kirby Garlitos) Christian Bale To Bail On Enzo Ferrari Biopic? Last August, we reported that Christian Bale was tapped to portray Enzo Ferrari in an upcoming biopic. The film would see Bale starring in the titular role covering a specific time in the Prancing Horse patriarch's life. Now, though, it seems Christian has to back away from the role, which Variety reports is due to health concerns. It seems the required weight gain necessary here is just too unhealthy, which is a shame because we'd love to see what the Oscar-winning actor could bring to the table here. For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] January 29th, 2016 Bale has shown tremendous range with respect to his weight in the past. Go look up pics of his character from The Machinist, and then remember he was also a seriously buff Batman. Director Michael Mann needed Bale to gain a certain amount of weight by spring of this year, but the pace required from Christian would be too much. Mann will now find a new leading man to become Enzo. The movie is still moving forward, of course, and it's slated to show Ferrari during the highly difficult year of 1957. We say it was difficult, but that's an understatement. That year saw a Ferrari 335S race car lose a tire during the Mille Miglia. The car careened into the crowd where it killed the driver, co-driver and nine spectators. Enzo and his company were put on trial for manslaughter but the case was ultimately dismissed. (Jeff Glucker) 2016 Ferrari FF to arrive at Villa d'Este Concours at Lake Como The unveiling will take place during this year’s Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este historic vehicle event, and will be the first time the facelifted four-wheel-drive supercar will be seen in public undisguised. Early last year camouflaged test mules were spotted testing, showing only very minor visual updates - concentrated around an enlarged front grille and air intake. Big changes look set to take place under the bonnet, however, with an anticipated increase power from the 651bhp offered by the current 6.3-litre V12 engine, while the current seven-speed dual-clutch transmission could be replaced by a new eight-speed unit. Such a move would help to cut the current 380g/km CO2 emissions. The FF’s all-wheel drive system is also likely to receive an upgrade. Inside, updates to the FF’s cabin are expected to focus around an updated infotainment system - which could be taken from the California T and include Google Play - as well as new finishes and materials. Three examples of the Ferrari 488 GTE will take to the track at Daytona International Speedway to compete for victory in the GT-LeMans class. The Ferrari 488 GTE is heavily based on Ferrari’s newest road car, the Ferrari 488 GTB. Not only do the two vehicles share a large amount of DNA, but are assembled in the same factory in Maranello, Italy. The new turbocharged racer has completed over 10,000km in testing in preparation for its debut in Daytona. The no. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTE will be driven by Olivier Beretta, former Scuderia Ferrari driver Giancarlo Fisichella, Davide Rigon and Toni Vilander. The second of Ferrari’s new racers, the no. 68 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 488 GTE, will also be driven by a quartet of drivers in Daytona. A former winner at Daytona at the wheel of a Ferrari, Alessandro Pier Guidi, will be joined by Alexandre Premat, Memo Rojas and Daniel Serra. This race marks the first for Scuderia Corsa in the GT-LeMans class. In the no. 72 SMP Racing Ferrari 488 GTE will be Andrea Bertolini, Gianmaria Bruni, James Calado and Viktor Shaytar. For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] January 29th, 2016 A pair of Ferrari 458 Italias will compete for the victory in the GT-Daytona class, where the car captured the 2014 24 Hours of Daytona victory as well as the 2015 IMSA driver, team and manufacturer championships. The no. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia, which captured those championships, will be driven by Christina Nielsen, former GRAND-AM champions Alessandro Balzan and Jeff Segal, and Robert Renauer. The no. 51 Spirit of Race Ferrari 458 Italia will be driven by Marco Cioci, Matteo Cressoni, Raffaele Gianmaria and Peter Mann. The television broadcast for the 24 Hours of Daytona will begin Saturday, January 30 at 2:00 PM ET on FOX Sports 1. Coverage will alternate throughout the race on FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2 and IMSA.com. Stay up to speed at @FerrariUSA and join the conversation with #FerrariGTRacing and #FerrariFirsts. Formula One Races Are About to Get a Lot Louder If there's one thing about Formula One's new V6 engines that's widely considered the most disappointing, it's the sound they make. While races have traditionally been quite loud, the new, turbocharged engines come up way short in the noise department. It looks like that's going to change for next season. PlanetF1 reports that new exhaust rules will see the cars switching from a single exhaust exit to a double exhaust exit. For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] January 29th, 2016 "We'll see how much louder [the changes prove], but some measurements have been made in the labs and they have seen some significant increase," Mercedes's Paddy Lowe said. "The reason for that is the waste gate was causing a sort of silencing of the main exhaust pipe, so by removing it from the main exhaust pipe we have less silencing going on of the main flow." We're hoping Lowe is right and that F1 races return to an appropriate level of loudness, especially since it looks like the current engine is going to stick around for at least another four seasons. (Collin Woodard) Ferrari F80 Concept Imagined as the successor to the LaFerrari, Italian designer Adriano Raeli's Ferrari F80 Concept keeps the long nose and wind-funneling rear of its predecessors while making a curious change to the powerplant. Instead of relying on a V12 engine, as Maranello's prior flagship steeds have done, the F80 uses Ferrari's KERS technology to coax a hypothetical 1,200 horses from a twin-turbo hybrid V8. Raeli expects that power to be good for a 0-62 time of 2.2 seconds, and a top speed of 310 mph, fast enough to earn a spot among the fastest production cars of all time — assuming it ever gets built. For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] January 29th, 2016 Would You Pay $2 million for a Ferrari F50? The F50 may not have been the finest of Ferrari's flagship supercars, but it remains a collector's commodity just the same – and its value keeps rising. F50s are already trading hands at upwards of $1 million apiece – and this year, at least one is expected to fetch upwards of $2.5 million. Ferrari launched the F50 in 1995 as the successor to the legendary F40 that came before. It eschewed the twinturbo V8 that powered the 288 GTO and F40 for a naturally aspirated V12, setting the stage for the Enzo and LaFerrari that followed in the series. That high-revving 4.7-liter engine, according to Ferrari, was derived from the unit used in the actual F1 car from 1989 (known as the F1-89, naturally). This engine served as a stressed member of the chassis, mounted behind a carbon-fiber tub. With its removable hardtop, the F50 remains the only model in Maranello's flagship series (excluding the Enzo-based Maserati MC12) that offered an open cockpit. It was all very F1-like, but was barely any faster (if at all) than its iconic predecessor. Still, it is part of a highly collectible series. Only 349 were made, each carrying a half-million-dollar price tag that seemed astronomic at the time in the mid-'90s. That'd be about $750k in today's money, but it's still a far cry from what they're trading at these days. Last year alone, RM Sotheby's sold two F50s at auction: one in May at Villa d'Este for just under $1.4 million, and another at Pebble Beach (as part of the Pinnacle Portfolio) for nearly $2m. This compared to just a few years ago when they were selling for six figures, not seven, prior to 2013. For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] January 29th, 2016 At this early point in the year, two major auction houses have already announced consignments of F50s. RM has one (pictured above) on the docket that's estimated to sell for a good $1.5m. It's sure to be one of the top sellers in a couple of weeks at its sale in Paris during the Salon Retromobile (where Artcurial has another Ferrari for sale at over $30m). Gooding & Company has one lined up as part of the Tony Shooshani Collection. That example (depicted in the video below) was displayed at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show and was owned by Jacques Swaters (of Ecurie Francorchamps fame). It has only 1,100 miles on the odometer and is expected to fetch between $2.5m and $2.9m, which would set a new record for the model. You might expect that the other models in the series, such as the 288 GTO and the F40, would be trading hands at much higher values. But they're not. The 288 GTO remains the scarcest of the Ferrari flagship supercars, with only 272 examples made. According to the records at Sports Car Market, four GTOs sold last year, each for over $2m, rising over the past few years in similar fashion to the F50's value. The F40, while arguably the most iconic, was also the most common, with over 1,300 made. 11 sold at auction last year, each for over $1m but less than $2m – save for one that was totaled and rebuilt in 1993 before Bonhams sold it in February for $825k, and the Pinnacle Portfolio's racing-spec F40 LM that RM also sold for $3.3m. Of the four Enzos that were auctioned last year (and the 349 made), two sold for $1.4m, one for nearly $1.9m, and one (also part of the Pinnacle Portfolio) which had been gifted to Pope John Paul II and which sold for over $6m. In fact, only one Enzo on record to date has sold at auction for less than a million, but it came close at $920k in 2012. That's still a substantial premium over the $659k which Ferrari charged for each of the 349 examples it made between 2002 and 2004. With those numbers being thrown around and that much cash trading hands, it's little wonder that the factory is charging $1.35m for each LaFerrari it builds – nearly double what it charged for the F50, even taking inflation into account. After all, if they're going to trade hands for seven figures anyway, why shouldn't the manufacturer get a bigger share of that margin? If its sales department is anywhere near as clever as its engineers are, it will channel some of that cash back into development of the next great supercar – and then charge even more for it. But the 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 with a V-12 engine has greater meaning for Michael Spezia, the museum's executive director. He conducted his job interview from the car's passenger seat 12 years ago with the museum's board president behind the wheel. "I critiqued his skill with the clutch," says Spezia of their high-speed drive through the countryside. "I told him he'd have the clutch burned out in no time if he kept driving it the way he drove it." That moment of forthright concern for a recently acquired treasure convinced the director that Spezia was the right man for the job of caring for the 500-plus cars and seven separate museums at the Hickory Corners institution, says Spezia. To celebrate the Gilmore's 50th anniversary as a nonprofit, Spezia has brought a collection of cars from the 1960s to this year's Grand Rapids show. The museum, one of the largest car museums in the world, has been bringing cars to DeVos Place since 2004, in part to generate awareness in the Grand Rapids market and to offer car show attendees an alternative to the new cars and trucks on display, Spezia said. That price definitely isn't about to fall anytime soon, either. But, if you are patient for just a little longer, Maserati could be a potential option if you still want an Italian hybrid and don't have millions to spend on a car. According to Autocar, the Italian carmaker is set to launch plug-in hybrid versions of the Quattroporte, GranTurismo, GranCabrio, and Ghibli so it will be able to meet emissions standards by 2020. As a brand that has never created a hybrid before, the introduction of such variants will be a philosophical shift. Indeed, Maserati's European general manager, Giulio Pastore, admitted to Autocar, "We have to do it—it's that simple. In some countries where it is highly incentivized, they will be a success, in others maybe less so, but there is government and customer demand for such cars." Though this decision was made grudgingly, it doesn't seem like Maserati's hybrids will lack performance. Pastore assured Autocar that "we will only electrify our cars if it can be done without sacrificing performance. If there's a sacrifice, then we won't do it." It seems that Maserati, though agreeing to conform to government regulations, is still unwilling to give up its core values. In 2013, Maserati CEO Harald Wester called EVs "nonsense." Should Maserati one day decide to build an EV, we're sure that performance would remain a top priority. (Kristen Lee) For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] January 29th, 2016 Sebastian Vettel says Ferrari Focused on Big 2016 Title Picture After a big improvement in form last year, when they rebounded from a winless 2014 to claim three victories and emerge as Mercedes' closest challengers, Ferrari are expected to take another step closer to F1's back-to-back world champions in the new campaign. Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne has already ratcheted up anticipation levels by suggesting they can be "the team to beat" when the season commences in Melbourne on March 20. Vettel returned to full testing action on Tuesday at Pirelli's wet tire test at Paul Ricard, although he was driving last year's car as the new 2016 model is not making its debut until pre-season testing proper begins in Spain next month. The four-time champion says Ferrari's race team are aware of the growing expectations around them, and although victory in Australia would be welcome, they are still focused on the bigger 2016 picture. "The development of the new car continues and we will certainly try to win in Melbourne, or earn as many points as possible. Given there are 21 races, if someone asked me whether I would like to win right away or if I would rather win the title, well there is no comparison." Since the end of Michael Schumacher's record era of domination in 2004, Ferrari have only twice triumphed at the season-opener - in Australia in 2007 and Bahrain in 2010. For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] January 29th, 2016 Vettel himself has only once won the first race in eight attempts. "I plan on going to Maranello a few times to work with the simulation program in order to be ready," he said. "I must also improve my physical conditioning, especially after the Christmas period." The Italian publication reports that Ferrari will launch their car on Friday February 19, three days before winter testing begins. The team has already confirmed their new car will be unveiled online. Since opening in 1959, it has been the home of the Daytona 500, the most prestigious race in NASCAR. In addition to NASCAR, the track also hosts races of ARCA, AMA Superbike, USCC, SCCA, and Motocross. The track features multiple layouts including the primary 2.5 miles (4.0 km) high speed tri-oval, a 3.56 miles (5.73 km) sports car course, a 2.95 miles (4.75 km) motorcycle course, and a .25 miles (0.40 km) karting and motorcycle flat-track. The track's 180-acre (73 ha) infield includes the 29-acre (12 ha) Lake Lloyd, which has hosted powerboat racing. The speedway is owned and operated by International Speedway Corporation. The track was built in 1959 by NASCAR founder William "Bill" France, Sr. to host racing that was held at the former Daytona Beach Road Course. His banked design permitted higher speeds and gave fans a better view of the cars. Lights were installed around the track in 1998, and today it is the third-largest single lit outdoor sports facility. The speedway has been renovated three times, with the infield renovated in 2004 and the track repaved in 1978 and 2010. On January 22, 2013, the track unveiled artist depictions of a renovated speedway. On July 5, 2013, ground was broken on the project that will remove backstretch seating and completely redevelop the front stretch seating. The renovation to the speedway is being completed by Design-Builder Barton Malow Company in partnership with Rossetti Architects. The project, named "Daytona Rising", is scheduled to be completed in January 2016, and is expected to cost US $400 million, placing emphasis on improving fan experience with five expanded and redesigned fan entrances (called "injectors"), as well as wider and more comfortable seating with more restrooms and concession stands. For more information contact Craig Forbes (678) 802-5000 [email protected] January 29th, 2016 After the renovations, the track's grandstands will include 101,000 permanent seats with the ability to increase permanent seating to 125,000.[1][2] Currently, the project is taking down the Sprint Tower on the front stretch of the track while the backstretch seats are being taken down in order to get 60% complete before the Coke Zero 400 and finished before Speed weeks 2016. The name has been changed to Daytona International Speedway Stadium according to NASCAR. NASCAR founder William France Sr. began planning for the track in 1953 as a way to promote the series, which at the time was racing on the Daytona Beach Road Course.[3] France met with Daytona Beach engineer Charles Moneypenny to discuss his plans for the speedway. He wanted the track to have the highest banking possible to allow the cars to reach high speeds and to give fans a better view of the cars on track. Moneypenny traveled to Detroit, Michigan to visit the Ford Proving Grounds which had a high speed test track with banked corners. Ford shared their engineering reports of the track with Moneypenny, providing the needed details of how to transition the pavement from a flat straightaway to a banked corner. France took the plans to the Daytona Beach city commission, who supported his idea and formed the Daytona Beach Speedway Authority. The tri-oval after the 2010-2011 repaving The city commission agreed to lease the 447 acres (181 ha) parcel of land adjacent to Daytona Beach Municipal Airport to France's corporation for $10,000 a year over a 50-year period. France then began working on building funding for the project and found support from a Texas oil millionaire, Clint Murchison. Murchison loaned France $600,000 along with the construction equipment necessary to build the track. France was also able to secure funding from Pepsi-Cola, General Motors designer Harley Earl, a second mortgage on his home and selling 300,000 stock shares to local residents. Ground broke on construction of the 2.5-mile (4.0 km) speedway on November 25, 1957. To build the high banking, crews had to dig out millions [citation needed] of tons of soil from the track's infield. Because of the high water table in the area, the hole excavated filled with water to form what is now known as Lake Lloyd, named after Joseph "Sax" Lloyd, one of the original six members of the Daytona Beach Speedway Authority. (The lake would be stocked with 65,000 fish, and France would arrange speedboat races on it.)[5] 22 tons of lime mortar had to be brought in to form the track's binding base, over which asphalt would be laid. Because of the extreme degree of banking, Moneypenny had to come up with a way to pave the incline. He connected the paving equipment to bulldozers anchored at the top of the banking. This would allow the paving equipment to pave the banking without slipping or rolling down the incline. Moneypenny subsequently patented his construction method and later designed Talladega Superspeedway and Michigan International Speedway. By December 1958, France had begun to run out of money and started relying on race ticket sales to complete the facility.
