Safety, and the enjoymentof your stove, are closely tied together. Your understandingand observanceof safe installation,
operationand maintenanceprocedureswill help you gain the greatestpossiblesatisfactionfrom your stove.
This information sheetwill help you review some important safety considerations.
1. Savethe instructionsand keepthem availablefor
reference.If yousellyourstove,deliverthe manualwith the

2. Do not makeunauthorizedchangesto your stove.
Your stoveis testedand listedby Underwriters'Laboratories
of
Canada.Any modificationnot authorizedby ULC and the factory couldresultin your havingan untestedstove,and could
resultin a hazardous
condition.
3. Do not take short cuts with your installation. "Makeshift" compromises
may resultin a hazardous
condition.The
clearance
reductionsusingrear stoveand stovepipe
heatshields
shownin the CanadianOperationManualhavebeencarefully
tested.They are includedin our listingwith Underwriters'
Laboratories
of Canada(ULC). Do not makeany clearance
reductionsnot approvedby ULC.
Your manualgivesstep-by-step
instructionsfor installingyour
stoveand the chimneyconnector(the pipewhich connectsthe
flue outletof your stoveto the chimney).Paycarefulattention
to all the details.
4. DO NOT USE CHEMICALSOR FLUIDS TO
START OR RE-ESTABLISH THE FIRE. Your manual
givesinstructionsfor startingand maintaininga fire. Especially
whenusinggreenor unseasoned
wood,you maybe temptedto
takeshortcuts in gettingthe fire started,or buildingthe fire up

6. Operate your woodbumingstovewith the doorsopen
or closed, but do not operate it with the doors part way
open. As you becomemoreexperienced
burningyour stoveyou
will probablybe ableto enjoy longerand moreefficientfires
with lessstovetending.However,continueto pay attentionto
safeoperatingpractices.
7. Store fuel where it will be safe and out of the way.
Storingfuel closeto the stoveis convenientbut be sureit is at
leastas far from the stoveas the requiredclearance
distance
shownin the Chart of Clearances
in the operationmanual.
Storeit whereit will not interferewith loadingthe stoveor
removingashes.
8. Load the right amount of wood in your stoveto provide the stove performance you want. For a long bum with
high heatoutput, you may load woodto the top of the fireback
but be surethe wooddoesnot interferewith closingthe griddle
or closingthe damper.Removewoodwhich is in the way.
Whenheatingneedsare light, bum smallhot fireswith
modestloadsof woodand leavethe damperopen.This technique can providea goodcombinationof moderateheat in the
roomand sufficientheat in the flu\: to keepthe draft strong
and minimizecreosoteaccumulation.
More frequentloadingwill
be required.Avoid slow,smoldering
bums as they may leadto
rapid creosote
build-up.

9. Dispose of ashesproperly.
Ashes removed from an
operating stove may give off heat and gases for several days.
Dispose of ashes in a metal container with a tight fitting lid.
Place the metal container outside the house on a noncombustible floor away from all combustible material.

Directions for installing glass may be found in glass replacement
kits, or in glassaccessorykits. If you have questions, call your local
authorized dealer.
* Do not operate your stove if glass in the doors is broken as your
control of the air supply and combustion rate may be reduced.
10. Be sure the fire can get enough air for good combus-
tion. Draft in the stoveand chimneydraws air from the room
to the fire. In mostolder homes,enough air leaks into the
houseso that the draft hasno troubledrawingroom air into

Intrepid should be 6" in diameter. The chimney connector must

cool. Use a glasscleaner formulated for cleaning stove glass. Do

* Vermont Castings uses high temperature ceramic glass. Treat it
with care.Although it is very durable,it can be damagedif it
is dropped or struck with a hard object, or if stove doors are slammed
shut. If it needs to be replace, use only Vermont Castings high
temperature ceramic glass. Do not use substitutes.

combustionof the volatiles.

mostefficientuseof your stoveand fuel by settingthe thermostat
to allow a moderatelyhot fire. Long,smolderingbum periods
shouldbe avoided.

THE INTREPID
The Intrepid is designedwith severalfeaturesthat differ from our
three larger parlor stoves.Air flow patterns, ash removal
and maintenanceproceduresspecificto the Inttepid are described
here.Basiccombustionprinciplesremainthe samefor all four stoves,
so the operation and installation sectionsof the manual apply
equally well to the Intrepid.

Glassdoors for fire-viewingare a standardfeature in the
Inttepid. Air flow through the stove is designedso pre-heated
air washespast the glassto preventcarbon depositsfrom forming.
Combustionair entersthrough the air inlet in the back of the
stove,passesforward through the air tubes at the left and
right sidesof the bottom of the stoveand flows past the glass.
Someof the air goesdirectly back through the fire massand
providesair for combustionin the primary combustionzone.

When you replacethe ashpan in the Inttepid, be sureit is seated
properly and pushedall the way to the rear of the stove
so it doesnot block the front ends of the air tubes. Too much
ash on the bottom of the stove may prevent proper seating
of the ashpan.

When the damperis closed(handlepointed down) the stoveis

Side-draftoperationwill usually be usedduring extendedbums.
With the stove damperin the open position, and
the front doors open, a wood stove may be used as a fireplace.
It is ideallysuitedfor thosetimeswhen you do not requirea great
deal of heat output such as in the spring and fall, or when you
want to enjoy the romanceof a cracklingfire. Always keepthe
sparkscreenin place when the doors are open.

Chimneys
The choicebetween
a free-standinginstallation
or oneinstalledinto a fireplaceflue will dependupon what you have
available,the conditionof the chimneyand how the stovewill
look in place. A masonry chimney must conform to provincial
regulationsor, in their absence,the requirementsof the National
Building Code. An existingfireplaceflue can make an excellent
chimneyprovidedit is in soundcondition and the stoveis installed
accordingto the provisionsof CSA-B365. We recommendthat,
prior to installing your stove into any masonry chimney, you
havethe chimneyinspectedby a qualifiedmason.Thechimneyand
installation will have to be inspectedand approvedby your
local building inspector. If your chimney is unlined, we
cannot recommendthat you us it in its existing state with

ASH REMOVAL
STOVECLEANING
During constant use, ashesshould be removedevery few
days, or when they have built up around the air distribution
ports to noticeably affect operation. This is easilydone when
the stove has died down with only a log or so left; as in the
morning.
To empty the ashes,a few shovel scoopsis all that is required. They may be taken from any door which allows good
access,even with a log or two still left within the firebox.
In order to achievethe high efficiencieswhich side draft
combustionoffers, it is necessaryto burn the primary fire mass
in as compactand hot a manner as possible.Burning logs
lying directly on a good bed of hot coals,which in turn are
insulatedfrom the cooling iron of the bottom, is the best way
to do this. Grates with relatively cool air circulating
underneath,tend to dispersethe high temperaturesrequired by
allowing coals to fall from the fire zone. Grates make it more
difficult to control oxygen flow to the fire mass.
Somecreosoteproduction often occursin air-controlledstoves
like the Defiant, Vigilant, Resoluteand Intrepid preciselybecause
they are such efficient heat transfer devices.You must learn to
watch for creosote,to control it, and to get rid of it.
Improperly seasonedwood and excessiveoperation with
low, smolderingfires are two major causesof creosoteproduction. Choosing the proper sizestove for the spaceto be heated
is your best defenseagainstcreosote.
If the stove is oversizedfor its heating area, it will not
have the opportunity to burn at a sufficiently high combustion
rate. As mentioned earlier, the lower end burning ratesare
lessefficient, therefore more chimney depositswill be formed.
A smallerstove operating at a higher bum rate will give better
heat .distribution, control. and efficienciesthan a larger stove
burnmg at too Iowa settmg.
NOTE: In the event that you should have a chimney fire, close
all the doors, the damper and the air intake shutter. Then call
your local fire departmentfor help.
Somecreosotedepositsin the firebox of a side draft combustion burner are normal and require no attention as they
burn off when the stove is used as a fireplaceor in updraft
configuration. During each heating seasonit is a good idea to
removethe chimney connector periodicallyand inspectthe
stovepipeand chimney for abnormal build-up. At this time it
is also a good idea to touch the Vacuumcleanernozzleto each

Vemlont Castings, Inc. will repair or replace, at its option, any part found to be defective when the stove is returned with shipping

1. The warranty is transferable. However, proof of original retail purchase is required.
2. This warranty does not cover damage resulting from overfiring the stove. Overfiring will result if the stove is used in such a manner
as to cause one or more of the stove plates to glow red. Overfiring can later be identified by warped plates and areas where the paint
pigment has burned off. Overfiring in enamel stoves is identified by bubbling, cracking, chipping, and discoloration of the porcelain
enamel finish.
3. This warranty does not cover misuse of the stove as described in the Operation Manual, nor does it cover a stove which has been modified
unless authorized by a Vemlont Castings representative in writing.
4. Porcelain enamel parts are subject to bubbling, chipping, cracking, crazing and discoloration when subjected to abnormally high temperatures
or themlal shock. Vemlont Castings offers no warranty on porcelain enamel surfaces subjected to these conditions.
5. Damage to stove while in transit is not covered by this warranty but is subject to a claim against the carrier. (Do not bum the stove
as this may negate the claim with the carrier.)
6. Claims are not valid where installation does not confoml to local building and fire codes or, in their absence, to the recommendations
