IDEA Chairman’s Message
On behalf of the IDEA Board of Directors,
it is my pleasure to welcome all of you to
Indianapolis, Indiana and IDEA’s 101st
Annual Conference & Trade Show. Let me
first thank our host Citizens Thermal for
inviting us to experience the hospitality
of the Speedy City. Having never been
to Indianapolis, I look forward to seeing
the home of the Indianapolis Colts and the world famous Motor
Speedway with its 99 year tradition. Golfers in our IDEA Tournament
will have an opportunity to get a firsthand look at the Speedway
since four holes are inside the famed Brickyard Oval.
It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve as Chair of IDEA. During
my tenure, I have had the opportunity to meet with colleagues from
all around the world, in locations like Washington, DC, Dubai and
Copenhagen. One powerful and recurring message, reinforced by
the International Energy Agency at the District Energy Summit in
Copenhagen last year, is that district energy and combined heat and
power is a proven, effective and near-term measure to cut greenhouse gas emissions at the community level. We know from experience that the efficiency advantages of district energy/CHP can unlock
economies of scale and enable adoption of renewable or recycled
energy resources to increase energy security while supporting local
economies. It is essential that we share our experiences and continue
to learn from each other. That sharing is the essence of IDEA.
A great example of the collegial spirit of IDEA is the exceptional
technical program assembled for this conference. I want to thank
Jamie Dillard of Citizens Thermal, our Technical Program Chair, and
Laxmi Rao of IDEA for assembling such a robust and diverse program.
While many US district energy systems, are located in the middle of
major urban centers, including my own at the University of Texas at
Austin, this conference program has content intended to further the
development of district energy in our communities with topics such
as community energy planning, biomass applications, and public
private partnerships in communities. And I urge all of you to take full
advantage of the tremendous technical resources in our trade show,
with our largest turnout of exhibitors ever. As I have said many times,
IDEA business partners are a highly valuable and focused resource,
with solutions specific to the needs of the district energy industry.
Having these resources under one roof offers tremendous efficiency
when shopping for advisors, equipment or services.
Before I pass the gavel, I want to thank my colleagues, Gregg Coffin
of the University of Missouri, Tom Pierson of TAS and Steve Tredinnick
of Syska Hennessy for the passion, dedication and service they have
provided while serving on the board. I want to thank Jim Adams of
Cornell University, Steve Swinson of TECO, and Tim Merrill of NRG,
for agreeing to serve an additional three-year term. I want to extend
my heartfelt gratitude to Dennis Fotinos of Enwave for his many years
of service on the Executive Committee and for serving as Chairman
with such great vision and care for IDEA. I want to thank all of my
colleagues on the board of directors for their dedicated service during
IDEA’s successful Centennial year. I would be remiss if I did not also
thank our many hosts, technical chairs, forum leaders and members
for helping IDEA thrive.
On Tuesday night at the traditional Chairman’s Dinner, I will have
the privilege of introducing David Toombs of Citizens Thermal as the
incoming chair of IDEA. Dave has been a tremendous resource on
the board of directors and he brings so much experience and solid
leadership that will continue to expand and strengthen IDEA as we
begin our next 100 years.
In closing, words cannot convey the gratitude and pride I have felt
in serving the association as chair of IDEA. It feels like the tide is
changing in our favor and that the word on district energy is getting
out there, but we must not let up and we need to continue pushing forward. We definitely are on our way to “Creating an Efficient
Energy Future” as long as we continue to work together and reach
out effectively.
Please enjoy your stay in Indianapolis and thank you for your
continued participation in IDEA.

A New Addition
Scheduled to open
in early 2012, the
630,000-sq-ft
University Medical
Center of Princeton at
Plainsboro will have
237 single patient
rooms. The state-ofthe-art facility will
feature 21st century
emerging technologies
and “evidence based
design” whose design
components have
a track record of
improving the quality
of patient care and
enhancing productivity.
Benefits of CHP+NRGSM
• Reliability. CHP+NRGSM will
provide enhanced reliability and
100% redundancy for the medical
center’s power needs.
• Optimal energy efficiency.
CHP+NRGSM will take an already
energy-efficient power system and
enhance it with ‘smart’ controls and
meters to monitor and adjust energy
use for greatest efficiency.
• Lower total costs. CHP+NRGSM will
enable economic dispatch of on-site
energy, reducing electricity costs and
maximizing sales to the electric grid.
• Good environmental stewardship.
Electricity and thermal energy from
CHP+NRGSM will be produced using
less fuel, reducing the carbon footprint.
• Employment. Building and operating
the CHP+NRGSM system will create
more than 100 construction jobs
and a dozen long-term employment
opportunities.
• Best use of capital. CHP+NRGSM will
allow the medical center to focus on its
core business – delivering quality health
care – with less capital expenditure.
When you’re building a state-of-the-art medical center, you want
to be sure reliable electricity, heating and cooling are available
to run your high-tech equipment and keep patients comfortable
during their stay.
Princeton HealthCare System selected NRG Thermal LLC
to provide the continuous energy supply it needs to ensure
uninterrupted high-quality medical care at its new University
Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro, on Route One in
Plainsboro, New Jersey, overlooking the Millstone River. NRG
Thermal will design, build, own, operate and maintain a combined
heat and power plant – CHP+NRGSM – on the medical center’s
campus to supply electricity, steam and chilled water.
Thermal
Networked. Reliable. And Growing.

Technical Tour — See District Energy in Action!
Citizens’ Perry K Steam and West Street
Chilled Water Plant Facilities
Wednesday, June 16
9:15 am - 12:15 pm
First built in 1893, Citizens Thermal’s Perry K steam
plant was originally constructed to provide electricity
and low-pressure steam to downtown Indianapolis.
Although the plant has changed over the years to
keep pace with the changing energy demands of a
growing city, it operates today with 8 boilers with a
combined steam capacity of nearly 2.0 million pounds
per hour, and it supplies a steam system that delivers
nearly 7.5 billion pounds of steam annually. Citizens’ West Street Chilled Water plant is a major customer of the Perry K
steam plant. Constructed in 1991, the plant utilizes 400 psig steam to power
six – 5,000-ton centrifugal chillers. Today, with a capacity of 36,500 tons, this
plant is the largest of 5 interconnected plants which provide over 54,000 tons
of district cooling to downtown Indianapolis.
Technical tour participants will have an opportunity to see how the long-term
results of steam plant modifications and chilled water plant construction have combined to allow Citizens to provide low-cost district
energy to a wide variety of commercial, institutional, and manufacturing interests.
Please wear your IDEA name tag for the tour.
Suggested attire: long pants, hard-soled flat bottom shoes. NO skirts/dresses or sleeveless shirts.
Enter for a chance to win!

With its triple eccentric design and metal-tometal sealing, the Zwick TRI-CON series guarantees an ideal performance. Maximum service life is achieved by eliminating any rubbing
between the laminated seal around the total
circumference during seating which enables a
frictionless opening and closing. This guarantees
perfect tightness, low operating torques and a
very long life time.
