Bad timing sabotaged what could have been a mini-renaissance for

election were mailed on time. Finally, the editorial deadf ine for the January/FebruarylMarch newsletter is Dec.

Chuck Smith, advocacy director, talked about the fall
Ohio Bicycle Federation meeting/celebration to be held
ut the Bicycle Museum of America in f iew Bremen on
Oct. 13. The museum houses the world's largest bicycle
collectioil, and there will be a special tour at 1 1 a.m. for
which there will be no charge. Smith also remindecl everyone about Five Rivers MetroParks' GearFest, which
will be at Eastwood MetroPark from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Oet. 4. In addition to the DCC, Team Dayton, Colavita
Ohio Cycling Club plus hiking and mountain climbing
interests will be represented. Volunteers are needed to
help man the DCC booth as well as to model DCC eycling clothes.
Srnith distributed information regarding the costs for
using the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Officers Club
for the DCC Banquet. Snrith will also investigate the
Engineers Club downtown as a site for the banquet, since
it would offer a central location. A firm date for the banquet will be determined when a site is selected.
Bikeways Director Chris Brown stated that he tried
riding Monday, Sept. 15, after the huge windstorm in
Dayton. The bikeways were covered with debris and obstructed by fallen trees. He noted that Five Rivers
MetroParks did an excellent job of quickly clearing the
bikeways; by Thursday the bikeway from Woodbine
Avenue to Eastwood MetroPark was clear. Also cliscussed was the fact that atleast one bridge is closed on
the Little Miami Scenic Trail near Corwin. [t was noted
that the bridges in that area can be hazardous when wet
and that one rider was seriously injured when he fell on
one of the bridges in that area.
Touring Captain Tom Wilson reported that two area
ride coordinators are no longer interested in coordinating rides. He noted concerns among some ride coordinators that since there will be fewer newsletters, it will
be difficult to list rides. Wert Minardi stated that a number of clubs have resorted to quarterly newsletters. Kiesel
added that the website is updated daily and rides can be
updated there.
Social Director Beverly Owens reported that there
was a poor turnout for the annual DCC picnic Sept. 27
at Eastwood MetroPark. The day of the picnic was
cloudy, and rain threatened. Because of the threatening
weather and poor turnout, the picnic ended early at 1 :45
p.m.
ln old business, Wert Minardi mentioned the possibility of holding the DCC banquet at the Hope Hotel at
Wright-Patterson AFB. Smith will investigate this location.
Taulbee stated that there is sorneone interested in
serving as the 2009 social director, and she will follow
up on this possibility.
Witte initiated discussion of new and different rides
the club could offer. He brought up the possibility of a
poker ride. Wert Minardi spoke about an indoor century
ride that could be held during the winter. This sort of
ride would involve using rollers or trainers.
Wert Minardi said the DCC Christmas Lights Ride
would be held Dec. 14, weather permitting.
Smith reminded everyone that StreetSmarts Cycling
classes are scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturd&y,
lr{ov. 1 and 8 at the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center,
16 S. Williams St., Dayton.
Witte moved to adjourn the meeting and Smith seconded the motion. With no opposition, the meeting was

Dan Hepp introduced himself and told the board
about his involvement with cycling in the Springfield
area. He organizes several different types of rides in the
Springfield area including a ride called BOB, Believers
On Bicycles. [n addition to this ride, he leads Tuesday
evening, Thursday evening and Saturday morning rides.
He asked the board to detail the benefits of listing his
rides with the DCC. Ride insurance was one benefit discussed. It was noted that for the insurance to be in effect, riders must be members of the DCC, the ride must
be listed with the club, a tour roster must be signed and
a helmet is required. [t was noted thatthe complete procedure for DCC rides can be reviewed on the DCC
Wert Minardi also reported that she received an update from Dorothy Lane Market about the DCC's participation the DLM Good Neighbor program. The club
should expect a check for $150 to $200 from DLM in
February.
Wert Minardi said she sent the October newsletter
to the printer by mid-October. The deadline for the JanuarylFebruary/March newsletter is Dec. 5 for editorial
content and Dec. 10 for advertisements and mil eage lists.
The plan is to have the next newsletter mailed between

If you buy groceries,
Overnight ride is like a fine wine
you can help the DCC
By Marilyn Corbin, DCC member
By Kay Wert Minardi, DCC newsletter editor
(9 37) 299-2454; spokenl ink @ minardi.org
Dorothy Lane Market notified us in late October that
because of just seven Dayton Cycling Club members'
purchase of groceries, the club would receive approximately $150 from the DLM Good Neighbor Program.
Every year DLM, which has stores in Oakwood,
Washington Twp. and Springboro, rebates $75,000 to
community organizattons. The rebates are based on how
much members of the participating organizations spend
at DLM during the calendar year.
As of Oct . 72, seven DCC members had met the $250
minimum, with a total spent of $ 16,692.06. At the time,
our spending represented 0.203 percent of the total of
all participating organizatrolls. On Oct. 72, we would
have received 0. 203 percent of $2S,000, or $ \52.1 3. The
amount we've spent certainly has gone up since then, so
the DCC should receive between $ 150 and $200 in February or so.
If you ever shop at Dorothy Lane Market, consider
signing up for the Good Neighbor Prograr'n. You will
need to get a DLM shopper's card and let the cashier
scan it each tirne you buy something atDLM. You also
need to fill out a Good Neighbor Program enrollment
form (available at the front desk of any of the stores)
and indicate the Dayton Cycling Club as your selected
charity.
If you are nervous about participating, rest assured
that the Dorothy Lane Market does not give out or sell
any personal information gleaned from shopper's card
usage. Although I receive periodic updates about the
DCC's status in the Good Neighbor Progr&ffi, I am not
privy to our member parttcipants' nAmes or shopping
habits.
The Dayton Cycling Club's Morrow Wine Ride, like
great vintage wine, only gets better with age. This year
was a great ride for all of us. The weather was perfect
and the participants stayed together, riding at a reasonable pace.
The lunch stops were delightful, and the motel included a complimentary large breakfast that even included waffies and yogurt. The winery dinner offered
either steak or salmon with a bottle of wine, so what
more could one want?
Many thanks to Joan Rudy, who every year organizes this ride, It's a challenge, but she readily meets it.
Mary Lemaster, Steve Kamas and Kate (Joan's sister),
who happily sagged the ride, also deserve thanks.
It was a truly rnemorable, pleasurable event!6b
t-Bikeway Mileage Report
--]
Bikeway miles are those ridden on a non-listed
ride, at least half of which is on a bikeway.
Qualify for the Cyclo-Path Award by accumulating
125 non-repeatingmiles on recreational path rides. For
example, if you ride from Fifth Third Gateway Park in
Beavercreek to Xenia Station and back, you would have
ridden 20 bikeway miles, but only 10 of them would count
toward your 125 Cyclo,Path miles.

Comrnuter Chronieles
By Chuck Smith, DCC Commuter Committee chairman

Dayton Cycting CIub cornmuters top 90,000 nniles
DCC bicycle commuters covered 9I,620 miles
through November, easily eclipsing our record annual
total of 82,08 1 miles set last year. Preposterous petroleurn prices helped prod our commuters to pedal more.
If gasoline prices continue to fall, it will be interesting to see whether another DCC commuting mil eage
record is set in 20A9 or the reduced incentive to bike
commute cuts the miles.
Thanks for keeping us in the know, Dennls!
I hope you will join me in expressing appreciation
to
Dennis Pohl for compiling the monthly commuting
miles list for publication in the Spoke 'N' Link. Without
him, we wouldn't know how well we are doing.
Visit DCC booth at Adventure Surnmlt
Many commuters joined us at the Dayton Cycling
Club display at Five Rivers MetroParks' GearFest 2008
on Oct. 4 in Eastwood MetroPark.
We plan to participate in the Feb. 20-21 Adventure
Summit in the Wright State Llniversity Student Union .
Stop by our exhibit and say hello. We could also use
volunteers to mAn our display.

Time for some winter therapy
By Kay Wert Minardi, DCC newsletter editor
(937) 299-2454; spokenlink@ minardi.org
Are you tired of the cold, dreary winter weather?
Join us for the Dayton Cycling Club's first-ever indoor
century. This social and cycling event is sure to put you
in a better frame of mind.
The event will simulate the feel of an invitational
cycling event, with food stops , a chance to socialtze with
your cycling buddies, and more. Sorry, there will be no
portable toilets, headwinds or hills because we will be
inside, pedaling on trainers and rollers.
This winter pick-me-up will be from I I a.m. to 4
p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, atTherapy Caf€,,452 E. Third St.,
Dayton. The entry fee is $5, payable at the door,, and a
dish to share during the potluck lunch. The DCC will
provide cold drinks and dinnerware.
We'll have exciting cycling videos to watch and
music to listen to as we work up a sweat. Be prepared
for some surprises - we might race in the Tour de France
with Lance or meander around Ireland exploring the
green scenery there.
If you have gently
used cycling items that you are
willing to part with, we will have a table for a gear swap.
Please put your name on each item you bring.
One nice thing about indoor riding is ttrat if you keep

the pedaling tension low and your cadence up it is fairly
easy to pile up miles quickly. But you don't have to ride
a full century. You can ride just a little bit before calling
it a day or dancing instead. If you plan to attend, RSVP
to me by Jan. 13 so we can be sure we have enough
drinks, dirlnerw are, etc.
Dust off your trarner or rollers and your bicycle, and
make sure they are in good working order. Then, on the
day of the ride, be sure to wear your coolest cycling
clothes. No helmets required woo-hoo ! Be sure to
pack a towel to protect your frame and wipe off sweat, a
water bottle or two and a sense of fun.

By Kay and Mark Minardi, DCC members
(937) 299-2454; kmminardi @ minardi.org
We are once again organtztng a sag wagon to ac- to Elrnore (two nights), Bowling Green, Defiance (two
company Dayton Cycling Club members and friends on nights), Fostoria and Norwalk, averaging 50 miles a day.
We are interested in recruiting another full- or partthe Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure, from June 20-27
The cost is $50 per person. This guarantees partici- tirne driver if possible. The DCC pays the GOBA regispants space on a rental truck for up to two bags of gear tration fee of a full-time driver, so this is a nice way for
plus a lawn chair. In addition, we will provide ice-cold a non-rider to accompany his or her spouse on a fundrinks and light snacks after each day's ride, and atarp filled week. If you are interested in driving the truck,
shaded group camping spot in GOBAville. l.{ote that we contact us as soon as possible.
To register for the DCC's GOBA sag service, print
do not provide morning coffee or guarantee tailwinds or
the registration form on the adjoining page and mail it
closeness to toilets or showers.
Participants must register separately with Columbus and your check to us as directed. The form also will be
avarlable on the DCC website (daytoncyclingclub.org),
Outdoor Pursuits to ride GOBA (see www.goba.com).
GOBA 21 starts in Norwalk. The route goes from there although we don't have online registratiotl.&

DCC Members' 2A08 Touring Miles
Following are miles credited to Dayton Cycling Club members for miles pedaled on rides that have been listed
in the Spoke 'N'Link, the DCC's Web site or the Ohio Bicycle Federation's Bicycle Events Calendar. These totals
reflect data from all tour rosters received by Dec. L0.
Ride leaders: Tour rosters must be received by Jan. 8 in order for the rides and miles to be included in this
year's awards. In general, rosters must be received by the 10th of the month in order for the information on them
to be published in the next month's newsletter. Please submit rosters within 30 days in order for the miles on them
to be credited to your riders. Be sure to check your rosters before turning them in. Make sure riders have entered
their DCC member numbers and the miles they rode. Finally, be sure to send tour rosters to DCC, cio Sally Pinnell,
247 4 Banyon Drive, Beavercreek 4543 | -2612.

On Saturday, Nov. 1 , 19 hardy souls
left Young's Jersey Dairy outside of Yellow Springs and biked south for an overnight stay at Kings Mill during the DCC's
annual Morrow Wine Ride. Again this
year the weather gods smiled down,
and participants were able to eat lunch
outside at the Little River Cafe at midday on Saturday. That night the riders,
SAG crew and spouses had a great dinner at Valley Vineyards. Before heading home Sunday, everyone gathered
outside the motel for a photo shoot.
Everyone agreed that it had been a
great weekend.&

Thanks to all who voted for me ! I hope to quickly
get up to speed on the responsibilities of the new position.
I live in the Englewood area and have been a Dayton Cycling Club member since 2006.l recently retired
after years of working in the computer industry, and look
forward to having more time to ride.
I lead a ride out of Brookville each Friday (except in
January and Febru ary) at a slow pace to Arcanum for
lunch. We alternate between two restaurants, and bottr
have great food. Come out and join us. I can guarantee
good food, great people and no hills !
Now that winter is here , it' s the perfect time to start
.We
thinking about rides for the upcoming riding season.
have several regular club rides scheduled each week and
a few special rides such as the Morrow Wine Ride, Old
World Tour, Christmas Lights Ride and the Covered
Bridge Tour. ['m hoping to get ideas from members on
other types of rides you would enjoy. If you have any
suggestions, please contact me.
Here are my thoughts on some new rides we could
offer:
. Family rides with the kids for ice cream
. Multi-day tours with overnight camping. The Junction Festival in Milford would be a good destination for
this one.
o Night rides. 'Wb have beautiful trails in the area
that are great for night riding.
o Rides to local festivals. I've done this with my
grandkids, and they loved it. I liked not having the hassle
of parking.
o ,A ride for new members to meet other club members.
{ dam ride: We have some great parks with nice
picnic facilities Around the dams in the area.
I'm interested in offering rides our new members

would like to attend. I rernernber thatit was a little difticult for me to select rides the first year I joined the club.
The ride categories helped, and calling the ride leader is
always a good way to get additional information.
I've heard from longtime club members about rides
the club has done in the past. I'm hoping to hear from
you if there are any you would like to bring back.
Check the DCC website for touring meeting
I will hold a touring meeting in early spring for touring coordinators, ride leaders and anyone else interested
in attending. The time and location have not been finalrzed, but will be posted on the website. You can also
obtain inforrnation about the meeting by contacting your

How to select a club ride
Monthly Spoke 'lr{' Link ride lists include an area, length
and speed classification for each ride. The areacolumn gives
a general indication of where each ride stafts and ends. All
rides are in Ohio and are loops, unless otherwise noted.
Ride classification (Class) and length (Miles) of the ride
are important considerations for riders when selecting rides
to participate in. The speed classification gives a general idea
of the speed riders will be expected to maintain during a ride.

Christmas Lights Ride brightens holidays
By Kay Wert Minardi, DCC newsletter editor
(937) 299-2454; spokenlink@ minardi.org
After a two-year hiatus, the Dayton Cycling Club's
2008 Christmas Lights Ride actually happened on Dec.
14. The day was overcast andbreezy, but the temperature reached a mild 55 degrees. There was no snow or
fog, which had put the kibosh on the event in 2006 and
20A7, respectively.
I very nearly had to cancel this year's ride because
my daughter, Clara, come down with strep throat the
day before. In additioil, my husband, Mark, left on a
business trip to Boston just an hour before the ride's start.
Since Clara had been on rnedication tor 24 hours and
was f eelin g a lot better, I decided she and I would play
Rudolph in our car.
Eleven people showed up at the Marion's Prazza
parking lot at" Patterson and Shroyer roads in Dayton.
Fran and Rick Phillips were the most festive, since they
had colorful strings of lights on their bike frames.
In a little more than an hour and nearly I miles of
riding, we traveled through Dayton's Patterson Park
neighborhood, Kettering's brightly decorated Lincoln
Park and Oakwood. Luminaria festooned Oakwood's
Shaf or Boulevard and many of the side streets. This lent
a cozy glow to the evening.
In the night's only rnishap, we lost Dale Williamson
on the uphill trek to Lincoln Park. It's difficult to keep
track of each other in the dark ! Fortunately, Dale found
his way back to Marion's.
Back at Marion's, W'illiamson and non-riders Anita
Patten, Bob Tackett and Joan Rudy were waiting to eat
pizzaand socialize with us. It was a very pleasant, laidback evening. Thanks to all the participants, particularly
Chris Brown, who acted as our cycling leader.&

' The International Mountain Bicycling Association
on Nov. 19 announced that an expected National Park
Service rule change will benefit bicycling in the national
parks "by improving the administrative process for opening trails to bicycles." The National Park Service said
the proposal for new rules would be formally announced
later in 2008, but had not done so at press time. Read
