On behalf of Lunenburg Campus, we welcome you to our learning community! We are very excited you
have chosen NSCC!
Lunenburg Campus is one of 13 campuses across the province that forms the Nova Scotia Community
College. We are in close proximity to many amenities and services located within the Town of Bridgewater.
Lunenburg Campus is a diverse mix of students. Learners are able to combine one or two years of theory
with practice and apply this knowledge and ability in the labour market upon graduation.
As Canada’s Portfolio College, the Nova Scotia Community College uses portfolio learning not only to help
you focus on what you have learned but also focus on how you learn. Faculty will guide you through the
portfolio development process as you learn to become more actively engaged in the learning process. Your
portfolio will become one of your most valuable resources in your learning life.
I would encourage you to take advantage of the many resources available from Student Services. Our team
offers a wide variety of support programs to help you reach your goals.
Lunenburg Campus is very lucky to have an active Student Association. I encourage you to become involved
to ensure there are ample opportunities for you and your peers to have fun and make new friendships. The
Student Association is your voice on Campus!
My door is always open to you so drop by to say hello or to share a recent success. I look forward to meeting
you in September!
Kindest Regards,
Craig Collins

Lunenburg Campus Library
Library Services
NSCC Library Services provides a wide range
of learning materials in print and electronic
formats at 13 campus libraries and through
our web site. NSCC is a member of Novanet
which provides access to millions of resources
owned by university and college libraries in
Nova Scotia. Services include reference,
interlibrary loans, reserves and Live Help.
Electronic Resources
Students have access to a variety of electronic
resources such as databases, ebooks,
audiobooks and streaming video. A library
barcode is not required to use these services.
Contact library staff for assistance.
Requests for materials not available at our
campus library may be made by Novanet
Express or Interlibrary Loan.
Most materials can be borrowed for 3 weeks
and renewed up to 3 times with some
exceptions.
We also offer:
 Individual/group study rooms
 Copying ($$) and scanning
 Mobile device charging station
Reserves
Faculty may place materials on “reserve” in
the library for students to borrow. These
items are held at the library desk and have
shortened loan periods due to high demand.
Borrowing
Students can register for library services by
visiting their campus library and presenting
their student ID card. Library staff will issue a
barcode which is applied to the back of the ID
card. This will be required to access the
library’s print resources, such as books and
magazines.
Once they are registered, students may
borrow from Novanet and other libraries
Canada-wide.
New for Fall 2016
The library will be
lending iPads and
laptops.

NSCC is Canada’s Portfolio College
Portfolio: IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO START
PLANNING FOR SUCCESS
As a NSCC student, you are expected to develop a portfolio of your work as part of your study at
the College. A portfolio is a powerful and convincing way to demonstrate your achievements to
future employers over and above the standard resume. It allows you to know and talk about yourself as a learner, profile your skilled self, and to be able to articulate what you have learned and
what your goals are.
“Employers consistently tell us that our grads
have the edge over others, because of their
NSCC Portfolios...” nscc.ca/real

awards and eligibility. Also make sure to look for “Lunch n Learn” sessions hosted by the Student Award
Committee throughout the year to learn more.
NSCC Lunenburg Campus is very grateful to those who support our fundraising efforts and local donors
who support our awards program. Together we know the importance of recognizing student achievement
and assisting with financial need.

~ Charles W. Eliot
At NSCC, you will uncover a wealth of learning in part made possible through the
textbooks and resources of your chosen program. We are also fortunate to have a well
stocked and staffed library too. For those who love to read for pleasure or learning
beyond their programs, Lunenburg Campus is pleased to offer students and staff alike a resource – a free
book exchange! The vision of this resource is to offer free books (both fiction
and non-fiction) that were enjoyed by others, and are recommended to you.
When you arrive on campus, look for the bookshelf in the Atrium; scan for books
of interest; review a critique; borrow a book – or donate one you enjoyed. After
all,
“it is what you read when you don't have to that determines what

Milestones
At NSCC ‘milestones’ are non-course program requirements. As your program unfolds, ‘milestones’ will be
covered in such ways as guest speakers, site visits, industry videos, web-based tests, demonstrations and/or
workshops. Most often, these are safety related training sessions to prepare you for industry.
Important first milestones are OH&S and WHMIS. Unless you have taken OH&S and WHMIS within the last
four years from a recognized trainer, you need to do these assessments. To ensure a safe learning environment,
we require all students complete OH&S and WHMIS by the end of September 2016 - inaction to do so
may impact your ability to progress in your program.
You can access the online tutorials and secure testing at: http://access.nscc.ca/safety/index.htm

RPL: Recognizing Prior Learning
“Giving Credit where Credit is due”
NSCC Lunenburg Campus Student Ambassador program: This
leadership program encourages students to develop personal
and professional skills while making important contributions to
the campus and community through volunteerism.
What is RPL?
Simply put, RPL recognizes that you may have already acquired the skills and knowledge that our courses set out to
teach you through employment, volunteering, or training. If you can demonstrate that you already have this learning,
you may be able to save yourself time and class work.
RPL is the process of: identifying, documenting, assessing and recognizing what a person knows and can do. We
consider it "giving credit where credit is due."
Who should consider RPL?
If you have significant learning from work and life, which is current and equivalent to NSCC programs and/or course
outcomes, then you are encouraged to apply.
How is RPL assessed?
A number of ways, including: written/oral examinations, portfolio review, skill demonstrations, simulation (role play,
case study), interviews, projects & assignments, product assessments or a combination of these. The two main methods are credit transfer and challenge for credit.
What is a credit transfer?
A credit transfer is a process by which courses completed at other recognized educational institutions are accepted as
equivalent credit for NSCC courses as long as the learning is current and equivalent.
What is a challenge for credit?
A challenge is a process in which learners match their individual learning to the learning acquired in NSCC programs
and/or courses. The challenge process allows them to demonstrate how they’ve met the program/course learning outcomes from workplace learning, learning from life, international credentials or a combination of these.
Who assesses RPL?
A subject matter expert, usually an NSCC faculty member, assesses your prior learning.
Ambassadors contributed to events such as: Campus Idol,
College Idol, Frost Fest activities, College Week activities
and also helped to provide campus tours and more.
WHO SHOULD BE AN AMBASSADOR?
We are looking for students that not only model a successful academic experience, but those who
are interested in:
Helping others
Offering encouragement and support to students
Having fun and meeting new people
Learning about themselves
Gaining new skills and fine-tuning existing ones
Sharing positive NSCC experiences and
Developing job skills for their portfolio
How can I get involved?
There are many benefits to becoming a Student Ambassador. Here are just a few:
*resume and portfolio rewards * free stuff * participation in fun activities * networking within
the community * free professional development workshops * references and referrals *
collaborating with staff, faculty, other student leaders, groups, and departments * college
recognition * new friends *
This year, we encourage you to be an Ambassador! Make an impact; get involved!
What will this cost?
Full-time learners have RPL fees covered by your tuition; the fee for RPL for part time learners is under discussion.
When should I start the RPL process?
As soon as you have confirmed your acceptance into NSCC, and have paid the confirmation fee, you can begin. Contact the Centre for Student Success to begin the process. If you decide to wait until courses are underway, you are
advised to continue attending classes until decision has been made and credit granted.
Where can I obtain the form(s)?
Forms are available at Student Services. You can ask for them at the front desk. Someone will be there to assist you if
you have any questions.
