Prather has led the Franklin College athletic program from its historic ties to the NAIA into the NCAA's Division III in 1992. He also has been the institution's representative for athletics to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and its predecessor, the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference. Since taking the reins of the Grizzlies’ program, Leonard’s top priority has been to instill a collective will among his players to work and play smart. Players will learn how to give their best effort, whether it’s in the class room, on the practice field or on game day. For him the rewards are more than winning football games and championships. Leonard wants his players to benefit from the special life lessons that athletics teach and the camaraderie and collective pride that true teammates experience together each season. In less than five seasons, Leonard and his staff elevated the Grizzlies to a level not seen for many years at FC. They emerged from also-ran status to winning a football championship in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Not only did Franklin claim its first league title outright with a 7-0 conference record, but the “Griz” earned its first automatic berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs, making its first post-season appearance of any kind since 1972. Franklin equaled its 2006 school record for most victories in a season with a final overall record of 9-2 and kept the Victory Bell trophy after defeating arch-rival Hanover College for the third straight season. A record 10 Franklin players were named to the All-HCAC First Team and Leonard was named the conference’s Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. Franklin continued edging closer to that goal in 2006, posting a 6-1 record in the league for a second-place finish, and producing a 9-1 overall mark, both best-ever records at Franklin at the time. The Grizzlies narrowly missed an at-large bid to compete in the NCAA playoffs. Despite the Grizzlies’ recent spectacular successes, the upcoming 2008 season poses the same challenges for Leonard and his team, which again will return most of its starters and is brimming with confidence. “Our goal that we set every year is to win the conference championship,” said Leonard, the 17th head coach in the history of FC’s program. “We need to start fast in our first three non-conference games and then finish strong.” When Leonard arrived at the Franklin College helm in January of 2003, he sought to raise the confidence and conditioning levels of his new team right away. The Grizzlies’ new attitude in Leonard’s program involves: always think positive; strive for perfection; stay on the aggressive; enjoy football and enjoy life. According to Leonard: “Those four things, whether you’re playing football, studying for your classes or applying them in your profession, will give you the best chance for success.” The Franklin head coach is maintaining a long-standing tradition at FC, throwing the football with a quick-strike offensive attack. The team’s football logo features an F, which stands not only for Franklin, but also for former Grizzlies mentor Stewart “Red” Faught. Faught’s teams were noted for their high-scoring run-and-shoot offenses for most of his 32 years as head coach. Much of Leonard’s offensive system, the Red Attack offense, is taken from Faught’s playbook. Leonard has been involved with many other successful football programs in his past coaching career. Prior to taking the reins of the Grizzlies program, Leonard served as offensive coordinator for his alma mater, Hanover College, from the 1999 through 2002 seasons. In the 2002 campaign, Hanover’s offense was ranked fifth in total offense, second in team passing offense and fourth in team scoring offense among all Division III schools. During the 1996 and 1997 seasons, Leonard served as offensive coordinator at Wittenberg University (Ohio), the winningest football program in NCAA Division III history. He also served as an assistant coach with the professional Recruit Seagulls in Tokyo, Japan, which won the national championship there in 1998. His other assistant coaching experiences include serving as quarterback coach at Butler University in 1992, coaching wide receivers at College of the Holy Cross (Mass.) in 1991 and serving in his first tenure as offensive coordinator at Hanover from 1987 to 1991. Leonard was a graduate assistant coach at DePauw University (1984-86) and the University of Alabama (1986). Leonard received his bachelor’s degree from Hanover in 1984 and his master’s degree from DePauw University in 1986. As a football player at Hanover, he lettered four years. Leonard was a team captain, most valuable player and mental attitude award winner in his senior season of 1983. He is a member of the American Football Coaches Association and enjoys speaking at a variety of community functions. Leonard and his wife, Susan, have two children, Bart and Emily, and reside in Franklin. 6 Football Coaching Staff Football Coaching Staff Matt Theobald/Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Backs Matt Theobald was appointed as assistant football coach and strength/conditioning coordinator at Franklin College in February, 2003. Nineteen months of planning went into the development of the league–created to allow small college students to realize their ideal of the scholar-athlete. The league’s charter members included men’s athletic teams from Anderson University, DePauw University, Franklin College, Hanover College, Manchester College and Wabash College. Taylor University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology joined the slate in 1988. The league not only distinguished itself as an “academic athletic conference,” but permitted schools to restore athletic rivalries which, in some cases, dated back to the 19th century. During the spring of 1991 the presidents of the member institutions voted to alignthe conference with the National Collegiate Athletic Association. At that time, Franklin, Anderson, Hanover and Manchester elected to join DePauw, Rose-Hulman and Wabash as NCAA Division III affiliates. Taylor, which entered the league in 1988, withdrew from the conference in 1991. Following the 1997-98 academic year, DePauw and Rose-Hulman departed to join the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. In 1997, the conference accepted three new institutions from Ohio -- Bluffton College, College of Mount St. Joseph and Wilmington College -which began competing for HCAC championships during the 1998-99 academic year. The league announced its new name of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in May of 1998 with Tom Bohlsen as its commissioner. During the 1998-99 academic year, Wabash announced it would begin affiliation with the North Coast Athletic Conference in 1999-2000. Also prior to ‘99-00, the HCAC announced Defiance College (Ohio) would become a full member during the 2000 spring sports season. Wilmington then departed the HCAC to join the Ohio Athletic Conference in 2000-01. During that year, the league announced Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. would join the HCAC slate in 2001-02. The HCAC added a ninth member during the 2004-05 academic year. Rose-Hulman, which was affiliated with the ICAC from 1988 to1998, returned to the league in 2006-07. Prior to the 2008-09 academic year, Chris Ragsdale was hired as commissioner, succeeding Bohlsen, who retired. Heartland league championships are awarded in eight men’s sports, including baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. The conference added a women’s athletics division–beginning with the 1993-94 academic year–which included five schools from the former Hoosier Conference for Women. Women’s championships are awarded in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. 2007 HCAC Football Standings SchoolHCAC Franklin 7-0 Mount St. Joseph 6-1 Rose-Hulman 4-3 Defiance 4-3 Anderson 3-4 Hanover 2-5 Manchester 1-6 Bluffton 1-6 Pct. 1.00 .857 .571 .571 .429 .286 .143 .143 Overall 9-2 9-2 7-3 5-5 4-6 2-8 3-7 1-9 Pct. .818 .818 .700 .500 .400 .200 .300 .100 2007 HCAC Honorees Co-Offensive MVPs: Chad Rupp, Franklin and Luke Dillon, Defiance Defensive MVP: Paul Spreen, Rose-Hulman Co-Special Teams MVPs: Machy Magdalinos, Franklin and Denny Kimmel, Anderson Freshman of the Year: Reed Eason, Rose-Hulman Coach of the Year: Mike Leonard, Franklin Franklin’s HCAC Players of the Year 1995 1996 1999 2000 2004 2006 2006 2007 2007 12 Mike Brouwer, defensive back Rick Etienne, running back Jim Larkin, split end, kick returner Brad Huff, quarterback Danny Sears, wingback, kick returner Danny Sears, wingback, kick returner Teddy Henkle, linebacker Chad Rupp, quarterback Machy Magdalinos Defensive Player of the Year Offensive Player of the Year Special Teams Player of the Year Freshman of the Year Special Teams Player of the Year Special Teams Player of the Year Freshman of the Year Offensive Player of the Year Special Teams Player of the Year Battle For The Victory Bell Besides the obvious objective of winning, nothing can stoke the fires of football competition quite like a good old-fashioned rivalry. The Rivalry For Franklin College, nothing gets its collective adrenaline flowing as much as the sight of old enemy Hanover College taking the same playing field. Since 1898, the Grizzlies-Panthers series is one which few small-college rivalries can rival. The Victory Bell has been given to the winner of the Hanover-Franklin football game since 1938. Hanover College’s Bat Club, a non-athletic organization that wanted to improve school spirit, presented the idea for the trophy. Then-Hanover president Albert Parker designated the Franklin game, which was approved by Franklin’s athletic board and student body. Hanover has a 35-16 record in games against Franklin with the Victory Bell Trophy on the line. The all-time series began in 1898 with HC winning that inaugural meeting 18-11. The series was interrupted by a 17-year stretch from 1971 to 1988 with the formation of the then Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference. Their renewed annual meeting now enters its 21st year with Hanover leading the all-time series 42-32-3 in the 77 meetings between the two rivals. This year’s rivalry clash will be at Franklin’s Faught Stadium on Nov. 24. Here are year-by-year highlights since the series resumed in 1988: 1988 The rivalry was back on with the help of both schools’ alumni councils and with the fact both schools would be in the new Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference beginning in the 1989 season. The game marked the last time Franklin mentor Stewart “Red” Faught coached against the Panthers and the Grizzlies dominated in a 34-13 decision at FC’s Goodell Field. Franklin jubilantly carried away the Victory Bell trophy, which had been refurbished by FC alumnus Jerry McKinney ’73. 1989 The game marked the first time new FC head coach Mike McClure ’75 faced his former team. He was an offensive coordinator for the Panthers in the mid-eighties. Hanover scored its first two touchdowns early, both by capitalizing on Franklin turnovers. The Panthers, ranked 12th in the nation in NAIA Division II, then outscored the Grizzlies 36-9 over the final three quarters in a 49-16 rout at Hanover’s L.S. Ayres Field. 1990 With FC star quarterback Reece Mann sidelined for his final game by a knee injury, senior Jeff Griman made his first start in a Bell Game. Griman completed 32 passes for 328 yards and four touchdowns, but behind the deft passing of Paul Gray and the running of BrianGlesing and a host of other weapons, the Panthers prevailed in a 47-33 verdict at Hanover. 14 1991 The Grizzlies struggled for most of the season, but played the favored Panthers even in the opening half. Host FC then took a two-touchdown lead in the third quarter, but Hanover rallied for 17 points in the fourth period. Dan Farrington kicked a 27-yard field goal with time running out to lift the Panthers to a 34-31 victory. The rivals combined for 1,110 total offensive yards. 1992 1995 Kicker Shaun Mahoney’s clutch 35-yard field goal in freezing weather put the host Grizzlies up by two points with three minutes left, but Hanover scored on a late 59-yard desperation drive to win 26-22. The Panthers finished their season unbeaten and earned their first NCAA Division III playoffs berth. 1996 Franklin naturally wanted to avoid a winless season, especially if it could get the Bell back at Hanover to boot. On a windy and snowy day, the Panthers took a 10-0 halftime lead, withstood a touchdown drive by Franklin to open the second half and went on to win 31-7. Quite unlike the previous November, the rivals played in 62-degree weather – this time at Hanover. Franklin took control early with a 7-0 first-quarter lead, but couldn’t move the football much after that in a 27-14 setback. 1993 The Grizzlies hoped to salvage a disappointing season with a Bell Game victory and hoped special gold jerseys might change their luck. Hanover’s offense was hampered by a sloppy field and weather that included a driving horizontal snow shower, but the Panthers won 19-7. The Grizzlies delighted a capacity crowd at Goodell Field with a thrilling 41-28 victory, capping FC’s best one-year turnaround in school history – from 0-9-1 the previous year to 6-3). Franklin’s Mike Flaherty rushed for three touchdowns, but the Grizzlies had to hold off a fierce fourth-quarter rally by the Panthers. It was Coach McClure’s only victory against HC. 1994 It was a bitter loss for Franklin, which rallied from two-touchdown deficits twice in the second half before falling 49-42 in a shootout. Taking advantage of a pass interference penalty the Grizzlies were positive would be whistled the other way, the host Panthers drove down and scored the winning TD with 10 seconds left. Hanover quarterback Terry Peebles had a whopping 71 passing attempts, completing 43 of them for 492 yards and six TDs. The game lasted nearly four hours. 1997 1998 Franklin came to Hanover with confidence as the Grizzlies were assured of a winning season with six victories in tow under new head coach Bill Unsworth ’71. Franklin scored on a return of a fumble by linebacker Josh McMillin and got an 89-yard kickoff return by Jim Larkin, but the Panthers captured their 26th straight home game victory in a 41-20 decision. Defense turned out to be the name of the game at Franklin’s new Faught Stadium, but Hanover’s “D” was stingier and had seven sacks. The Panthers rallied from a 10-6 second-quarter deficit to win 27-10 and finish unbeaten in the conference. 2000 Both teams put on a show with better than 800 combined yards of passing offense, but Hanover jumped out to a 19-0 lead on its first three possessions. Franklin attempted to rally after that, but was hindered by turnovers. The Panthers won the Heartland Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs. 2001 2001 – Visiting Franklin took a 6-0 lead into the second quarter, but it was all Hanover after that in a 54-6 decision at L.S. Ayres Field. 2002 The Grizzlies’ fortunes were no better in their return visit to Hanover as the Panthers capped an unbeaten season with a 57-12 rout of FC. After the hosts took control in the second quarter, they were fired up even more when kicker Drew Starck hit a 52-yard field goal with time running out in the first half. 2003 The game marked the first time new Franklin head coach Mike Leonard would face his alma mater. Though the Grizzlies entered with a 2-7 record, they took a 17-14 lead into the intermission. But the Panthers got busy in the second half and pounded out a 33-24 victory at Faught Stadium. 2004 Hanover controlled the ground (299 yards rushing) and the clock (almost 43 of the 60 minutes) in winning 24-7 before a huge Faught Stadium crowd in perfect football weather. The game was the first for Franklin College’s football program to be produced for local cable television presentation. 2005 The Grizzlies ended 11 games of football frustration by rolling up 558 total offensive yards and taking a 24-0 lead before host Hanover could even gain more than one first down. Franklin’s stunning 45-15 victory was its most lopsided triumph in the series since 1960. When the scoreboard clock hit zeroes, FC students nearly outran the team in claiming the Victory Bell trophy. Sophomore quarterback Chad Rupp threw three TD passes for the Grizzlies, who not only kept the Victory Bell trophy, but posted a school single-season record ninth win. Freshman linebacker Teddy Henkle made an interception for the third straight game. FC finished with a 6-1 mark in the HCAC. 2007 The Grizzlies routed the host Panthers 55-14 in longtime Hanover head coach Wayne Perry’s last game. The decision clinched Franklin’s first HCAC outright championship and marked the fifth time FC scored 50 or more points against a conference opponent during the season. Franklin’s three-peat against Hanover was its first since 1962-64. 15 Numerical Roster Grizzlies 2008 Roster 16 No. NamePos. 1 Kevin Lynch SE 1 Roshawn Hill DB 2 Scott Martin DB 2 Logan Worley QB/WB 3 Chad Rupp QB 3 Kyle Buresh DB 3 Evan Hutchens DB 4 Joe White DB 4 Ryan Momberger WB 5 Matt Cox SE 5 Jeremy Spicer DB 6 Tony Gregory SE 6 Des Prentice DB 7 Pat Hancewicz WB 7 Nick Mongan DB 8 Jon-Erik Bennett RB 8 Ross Tierney DB 9 Neil Craig WB 9 Matt Gore DB 10 Damien Dickman DL 10 Kyle Ray QB 11 Shane Diebold WB 11 Craig Wilson LB 12 Aaron Sparks P 12 Eric Baughman WB 13 Dan McManus DL 13 Nick Purichia QB 14 Coty Bragdon SE 14 Machy Magdalinos K 15 Michael Mattingly DB 16 Levi Smythe DL 16 Christian Brewer SE 17 Tez Bates SE 17 Alex Knerr LB 18 Nathan Ellis QB 18 Brandon Mescall P 19 Sean Walton SE 19 Brock Shideler DB 21 Trent Dahlstrom DB 21 Matt Zmich SE 22 Mitch Downs RB 22 Andrew Smith LB 23 Logan Deffner SE 23 Benji Hall LB 24 Joe Bonomini RB 24 Adam Wheat LB 25 Fred McMoore RB 25 David Tribbett DB 26 Zane Schroeder DB 26 Kelly Snellenbarger RB 27 Aaron Daniels DB 28 Tommy Frazier DB 28 Andrew Rodman RB 29 Isaac Davis LB 29 Jon Miller RB 30 Chris Bodigon DB 31 Zach Ward WB 32 Austin Gorrell WB 32 Kraig Shutters DB 33 Jesse Mercer DB 33 Justin Cave RB 35 Brendan Zellers RB 35 Ty Endicott LB 36 Teddy Henkle LB 37 Jake Carlson LB 37 Remy Heller RB 38 Wes Porter LB 39 Kyle Catron LB 40 Kyle O’Brien DL Yr.Ht.
