Tulsa International Mayfest
a. Introduction & background of campaign/event
The media kit, submitted for consideration for an IFEA Pinnacle Award, was
produced for the unveiling of the original artwork created for the 2015 Tulsa
International Mayfest commemorative poster.
Each year we select an artist with local ties to create the artwork that will become
the commemorative poster for Mayfest. The artwork and poster artist identity is
kept secret for months until the unveiling, which occurs two weeks before
Mayfest begins in an effort to build excitement about the days to come.
The media kit is altered each year to tie into the artwork while giving the media
something that is creative, well organized and easy to use.
The purpose of this media kit is to provide the press with all relevant materials
necessary to obtain news coverage for the poster and the Festival itself.
The media kit was distributed to press in advance of the unveiling with an
embargo as well as to press in attendance at the unveiling.
b. Provide actual media kit used to send out for your event – included
Media kit consists of a teacup and saucer hand-painted by a student of Tulsa
Girls Art School (TGAS) with an attached flash drive that has the Mayfest logo on
both sides and a brief description of the art school. TGAS provides specialized
art training to talented and motivated elementary school-aged girls living in the
inner city of Tulsa and is directed by Matt Moffett who was also the 2015 poster
artist. The teacup and saucer are painted to reflect the poster art theme of
“Tulsa: My Cup O’Tea.” On the flash drive is the poster artwork, artist bio and
other information relating to the poster and the Festival.
c. Target audience/demographics for the media
Our target audience is the Tulsa metropolitan area, which has an approximate
population of 952,377 according to the Tulsa Regional Chamber. Mayfest is
comprised of several areas, that when rolled into one large four day festival,
offers something for everyone to enjoy. We have activities, art, entertainment
and foods that appeal to a cross section of our community. Some festivalgoers
come for the corndogs, some for the selection of fine art, some for the hands-on
art activities in our KidZone area and others for the varied musical selection. The
poster artist tries to capture the essence of the Festival in a single snapshot,
which hopefully appeals to the community at large.
d. Target location (communities/cities/states) for media
We targeted media in the Tulsa, Oklahoma metro area, which reaches several
surrounding counties as well as some coverage reaching into Arkansas, Kansas
and Missouri.
e. Types of mediums used for media outreach
E-mail press releases and physical media kits with an embargo were distributed
leading up to the event with follow up phone calls and e-mail outreach to attend
the unveiling. Once the media attends unveiling, they receive digital kit on a flash
drive, which has the Mayfest logo on it as well as the hand-painted teacup and
saucer, which reflects the poster artwork. In addition to the media, we invite
volunteers and sponsors and ask them to help spread the word. We also use
social media sites Facebook and Twitter.
f. Measurable results indicating:

Number of publications/cities/states targeted
Four television stations and one daily newspaper located in Tulsa,
Oklahoma were targeted.
•
Percent of distribution that covered news
100% of the targeted television stations covered the event. Among the
print media, 100% targeted covered the event. Overall, we received
coverage from 100% of the targeted outlets.
•
Longevity of media coverage
Coverage began the evening of the unveiling, April 30, 2015 and ran
through May 13, 2015.
•
Increase/decrease in media from previous years
The longevity of our coverage was comparable to previous years,
although we received more coverage of the poster artwork during the
festival than previous years. This is a great benefit to us, as we want to
increase not only sales of the posters and t-shirts that feature the artwork,
but the original piece as well. It is sold during the festival by a silent
auction in our indoor Invitational Gallery.
The percentage of media covering the event was up from 80% in 2014 to
100% this year. In 2015, the Facebook post introducing the artwork
received 160 likes/comments/shares and reached 2,236 people in our
target audience.
g. Supporting question – What did you do to update/change this promotion
from the year before? Were your updates/changes successful? Please
provide measurable results/examples.
We were fortunate to work with the students at Tulsa Girls Art School to paint the
teacups and saucers, which formed the base of the kit. Attached with ribbon to
the handle of the cup are a brief description of the art school and the flash drive
containing the pertinent information. We had a 20% increase in coverage by
local media outlets.

MAYFEST POSTER REVEAL SET
The annual artwork designed by Tulsan Matthew Moffett
Tulsa, Okla. (April 21, 2015) – The original artwork for the 2015 Mayfest poster, created by Tulsa
artist Matthew Moffett, will be unveiled at 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, at the Helmerich Research
Center on the OSU-Tulsa campus, located at 700 N. Greenwood Ave.
Moffett is a self-taught Tulsa painter. A former elementary art teacher at Eugene Field Elementary
and Zarrow schools, he is now the director and co-founder of the Tulsa Girls Art School project.
Moffett began painting after the sudden death of one of his dogs. He painted the pet’s portrait to
commemorate his companion. To date, he’s painted more than 1,200 pet portraits all over the United
States and in several foreign countries.
This year’s poster painting is called Tulsa: My Cup O’ Tea, and features an art deco style, the Tulsa
skyline and a teacup and saucer in bright colors.
“I was inspired by Tulsa rising out of a black, art deco tea cup to represent our oil past, and the wild
paisley background to represent our colorful Renaissance happening in downtown Tulsa,” Moffett
said. “In the reflection of the tea cup is an older oil-town Tulsa. The canvas is circular, representing
how Tulsa’s downtown has come full-circle and will experience another golden age.”
Moffett describes his style as magical realism and full of symbols.
The reception will include the unveiling of the 2015 poster and recognition of the sponsors that make
Mayfest possible each year.

Posters will be available to purchase at the Merchandise Tent at 4th Street and Main during the
festival, May 14-17. Posters are $25 if signed by Moffett and $15 for unsigned.
The original artwork will be sold by silent auction, with a “buy it now” option. Bidding will take place at
the Mayfest Invitational Gallery, located in the Williams Towers Lobby at 1 W. 3rd St. Bidding will take
place at the Invitational Gallery Opening party on May 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. To buy tickets to the

The artwork for this year’s poster will be added to the Mayfest mural by William Franklin. Each year,
Franklin adds the current poster art to the mural on the wall of the official Mayfest Hotel, the Hyatt
Regency. Painting will begin after May 1, at 3rd Street and Main, weather permitting.

Matt Moffett
Mayfest Poster Artist 2015
Matthew Moffett is a self-taught artist who paints for the love of painting. Moffett
started to paint when one of his dogs died of a sudden aneurism and he wanted
to commemorate his companion. Moffett started painting pet portraits at the age
of 25, with no former training or experience. To date, Moffett has painted more
than 1,200 pet portraits all over the United States and in several foreign
countries. Moffett has been painting and showing his art for 16 years, and has
branched out to painting landscapes and cityscapes along with the pet portraits.
His work can be viewed on his website www.m2tulsa.com or at his studio, M²
Studio in Tulsa, Okla.
Moffett was an art elementary teacher for Tulsa Public School’s Eugene Field
Elementary School as well as Zarrow. Moffett now is the director/co-founder of a
dynamic, non-profit after school art program in Tulsa, Okla., called “The Tulsa
Girls Art School Project” (TGAS.) The mission of TGAS is providing quality
visual arts training to underserved elementary girls in the urban Tulsa area.
TGAS is starting its eighth year and has helped elementary aged girls achieve
their dreams of becoming visual artists. See the project at

the Tulsa internaXonal MAYFEST. Organizers are keeping a close watch on the forecast, too. 2news reporter
will dupree talked to them about what they plan to do in the event of severe weather. Will? Safety is a big
concern for the large crowds this event apracts as well as the dozens of arXsts that come to show their
work. This year MAYFEST includes 120 arXsts from at least 20 different states. Organizers came up with a

organizers ready for another night of fun and entertainment. Tony russell, news on 6, Tulsa MAYFEST is
underway and if you want to come down tonight there's plenty of parking even though some of the streets
are blocked off, " arXsts along main street started early gesng their tents prepared for aussaturday.
Glassmaker erimorwon the sXval's best ishow awd his first year at MAYFEST. Mort has been trying to get a
spot in the fesXval for six years! Eric mort, arXst, " it's a beauXful locaXon down here. I do a lot of shows
across the country and you can't ask for a much beper locaXon than right here for a show, MAYFEST is
setup for more than just art, four stages surround the fesXval and the lineup has arXsts from all around,
includin g some with Tulsa roots. Heather pingry, MAYFEST, we've got some great bands on each of the
stages. A liple something different for everyone, lots of are opennXl at lst 8 o'clock. If we've got good
crowds out here a lot of them stay open even later, so there's sXll plenty to do late into the night here, "
