Area: 221.26 sq. miles (17th in state)
Population: 513,657 (8th in state)
In 1844, Camden County was formed out of portions of neighboring Gloucester
County. Camden County makes up part of the Delaware Valley area, a
geographical and economic region that consists of areas located in Pennsylvania,
Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey. A number of municipalities that make up
the northwestern part of the county are considered suburbs of Philadelphia.
Camden County is the 8th most populated county in the state of New Jersey, but is
only the 17th largest county in square miles. There are currently 37 municipalities
located in Camden County.

densely populated than the state. While the regions county’s average and state’s
density have seen comparable increases in population density of 4.9% and 5.4%
from 2000 to 2010, Camden County has increased marginally (.9%).

Camden County is governed by a seven member Board of Chosen Freeholders.
They are elected to a three-year term by registered voters in Camden County. At
the state level, the county falls within the 3rd, 4th and 6th legislative districts where
it is represented by democratic Assemblymen Paul D. Moriarty, Angel Fuentes,
Gilbert “Whip” Wilson, Louis D. Greenwald, and Assemblywomen Gabriela M.
Mosquera and Pamela R. Lampitt as well as Senators Donald Norcross, Fred
Madden and James Beach. At the federal level, the county is represented by
Congressman Robert E. Andrews (D) and Frank LoBiondo (R) and Senators Cory A.
Booker (D) and Robert Menendez (D). 11
Camden County votes overwhelming Democratic even though 47% of registered
voters are Un-affiliated, voting primarily Democratic in national, state and local
elections. In the 2009 Gubernatorial Election, Democrat Jon Corzine received 54%
of votes, as compared to Republican Chris Christie, who received only 40% of the
vote within the county. In contrast, in the 2013 Gubernatorial Election Governor
Chris Christie beat State Senator Barbara Buono by more than 11 percentage
point. Similarly, in the 2012 Presidential election Barack Obama (D) received
67.8% of the vote as opposed to 31.2% for Mitt Romney (R).

As expected, 2008 and 2012 showed a higher voter turnout than the 2010
election year because they were both presidential election years. However, 2012
voter turnout showed a lower voter turnout percentage compared to the 2008
presidential election. Compared to the state, Camden County showed a lower
voter turnout percentage for 2008, 2010, and 2012 elections.
