Newsletter October 2013
“ Lear ing, Caring, Growing, Sharing” Newsletter Website: irvineschool.ca Phone: 834-3783 October 2013 Administrators’ Message A warm welcome back to everyone! We hope you had a great summer and good September start! At Irvine School, September has been quite hectic. Our back to school barbecue was a huge success. A special thank you to our Parent Council for the great job organizing this event. Our Terry Fox Run was held on Thursday, September 26th at 1:50! The students have been busy bringing in their “Toonies for Terry”. Thank you to Mrs. Funk for organizing this event. A special thank you to those parents that have paid their school fees. If you have not done so, please take care of this as soon as possible as our school programs do depend on this source of revenue. Please call the school to make special payment arrangements if you having difficulty paying the full amount all at once. We are very willing to take monthly payments to make this less difficult for you. Please check out this link to ensure you are helping your kids stay safe online. http://www.priv.gc.ca/youth-jeunes/fs-fi/tips_e.asp Cybersafety for Parents Also, don’t forget to vote in the upcoming election on October 21st. We have four candidates running for school trustee in our area. Please check out the interviews on the PRSD website so that you can make the most informed decision possible. Make sure your voice counts! PARENTS: Please go to the PRSD website and do a short survey to HELP OUR CHILDREN! Or use the following address to find it. www.stopthecuts.ca Sincerely, C. Carlson, Principal C. Lutz, Vice-Principal From the desk of Ms. Carlson: September has already come and gone. It has been very busy at Irvine School and we are excited about the upcoming events we are planning for the students. We have an art exhibition display being set up in the school library during the month of October. “Out There” is an exhibition of twenty works from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Permanent Collection which is bound together by the fact that each one contains a juxtaposition that makes it peculiar. “Each work of art in Out There combines elements of the ordinary to present the viewer with a unique and unfamiliar visual composition to experience and contemplate. The pieces are executed in a variety of mediums by artists following an array of individual creative processes.” Please come by for a visit to the school library and enjoy the art exhibit with us. A reminder that Picture day is on October 3 for all students, including JK. Our K – 3 will be learning about Fire Safety and Prevention, complete with a tour of the fire truck and a demonstration of a fire hose. Safety City in Medicine Hat is available at no cost to provide a variety of safety courses to our students and this year they will be providing presentations (age appropriately) on the following topics: Halloween Safety, Home Safety, Internet Safety, Bully-proofing, and Farm Safety. Please watch our Calendar of Events on our web page for dates. Another very impactful workshop that our students will participate in on November 4 and 5 is “Dare to Care”. The Dare to Care program is a fully comprehensive approach to dealing with bullying and challenges within K – 12 school communities. For more information about “Dare to Care”, please visit: http://daretocare.ca/ We will require several parent volunteers to help us with the workshop (Grade 5 – 9) on November 5 from 8:45 – 3:20. This program is intended to include school staff, students, parents, and community members. Please come and support us on this day to learn some common language which then allows for more consistent intervention and follow through when dealing with challenging issues. Did you know? Bullying hurts your ability to learn. It’s It’s true! Brain function is impaired by threat. When our brain perceives a threat, it signals our bodies and minds to respond by going into a flight or fight response pattern. This is a survival mechanism. This alarm signal produces stress hormones that affect the way we think, feel and act. Research is proving that emotion is far more powerful in determining behavior than logic is. No one has the right to say or do things that are hurtful to someone else, especially when bullying affects people on so many levels. bad news for the bully too! Research shows that people who bully are 4X more likely to be charged with criminal offenses. They are also more likely to drop out of school, limiting their ability to earn money as an adult. The worst research shows that people who bully often experience unsuccessful relationships and dead-end jobs. We obviously need to ensure we help victim and the bully. As mentioned at our September Parent Council meeting, students from k – 9 will be writing (CAT4) Canadian Achievement Tests. These are different than Provincial achievement tests that are written by gr.3, gr.6 and gr.9 students in May and June. The CAT4 tests measure basic numeracy and literacy skills; reading, writing, and mathematics. Each child that writes is compared to a normative sample of Canadian children the same age who also wrote the test. A “Parent Report” will be provided with the first report card, or as early as possible in the event they are delayed arriving back to the school from the marking center. Please do not hesitate to discuss these results with your child’s teacher at Parent Teacher Interviews, which take place on December 4 & 5 (3:30 – 6:30 p.m.) Our teachers will use the statistical data results from the CAT4 throughout the school year as part of their planning to improve individual and classroom achievement. Special thanks to our volleyball coaches this year. Mrs. Kraft, Mr. Chan, Mrs. Waldbauer, Miss Betcker and Miss Henderson have been giving of their time and doing a fabulous job with our teams this year. We appreciate your sharing of your talents and your dedication to our students. Thank you to parents who drove a Ford at our Back to School BBQ. Parent Council raised $20.00 for every individual who got into a Ford vehicle. Also, many thanks to School Council for organizing this event and Irvine school staff and students for their assistance. The school depends on this money, as they do school fees, to offer opportunities for the students. If you require special payment arrangements to pay school fees in installments, please call the school. Thank you for a wonderful start to our school year. For the remaining families, school fees are due by October 7th and you will get a $5.00 discount on a yearbook if you pay in full by this date. If you cannot pay the full amount, please let the office know that you would like to take advantage of our monthly payment option paying 10% on the 15th of each month starting on Sept. 15th. **When paying by cheque, please DO NOT combine payments for different items. Eg: School fees, milk tokens, hot lunch tokens. This causes difficulties as the money is deposited into different accounts and is entered at different times. Our first Scholas c Book Fair of the year will be held from November 28th to December 4th. Students in grades 1 ‐ 6 will have the opportunity to view books one day and to buy books another. All proceeds will be used to purchase new items for the library. Keep this in mind as you plan for Christmas! Help Us To Keep Your Children Safe Reminder to parents: Please DO NOT DRIVE in the bus loop. If you are picking up or dropping off your children, we ask that you do so at the front doors. The bus drivers are very concerned about the safety of your children in the bus area. Thank-you in advance for your attention to this matter. All students are to be signed in or out at the office if arriving or leaving at odd times. School will dismiss at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 11th and Friday, October 25th Textbook and Library Book Responsibility Textbooks are issued through the library on each student’s library card. Each item is barcoded with a number exclusive to that book. Students are then responsible for the return of and any excessive damage to these textbooks. Damages are not charged for books that are ready to be rebound because of the age of the book. The charge for a damaged textbook is $25.00 (subject to change). For a lost textbook the charge is the replacement cost of the book. Since textbooks are not all turned in until the very last student day it is impossible to have these items checked in, inventoried and evaluated for damage before the students leave. Because a letter received over the summer is often forgotten about or misplaced, letters for charges will go home the first student day of the following school year. Library books are signed out for one week and can be brought in for renewal. Overdue lists are run regularly and sent to the classroom where teachers remind students of the missing item(s). Students with overdue items are not allowed to sign out anything else until the overdue item(s) are returned. If an item remains overdue for a month or more, a letter will be sent home. If the item cannot be found, the student will be charged for the replacement cost plus $5.00 to help pay for processing and shipping charges. This is also the case when an item is damaged. Please keep in mind that schools have very tight budgets and replacing missing or wilfully damaged items would put a serious strain on them. We appreciate your co-operation in this matter. A reminder that Thanksgiving Day is on Monday, October 14th. There will be NO SCHOOL on this day. Enjoy a long weekend and remember to give thanks for all that you have. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3RD School Pictures for all grades will be taken on Thursday, October 3rd. Dress up in your best duds and try to smile. Due to time restraints we can no longer offer the opportunity for Buddy Pictures. If you have something that you want included in the monthly newsletter, please get items in to the office or email to [email protected] before the 23rd of each month. Thank-you. HOT LUNCH DAYS Parents/Guardians: This year we will be having hot lunches every other Friday. Orders and money will be taken in the classroom Thursday morning the prior week. The cost of all hot lunches is $5.00 and tokens will work for every lunch. Also new this year, we will be selling an “EXTRA” token for $2.00. This is for the kids with the bigger appetite. The “EXTRA” token gives one more of the main item. For example: on Taco day the regular token would give one taco with snack and the “EXTRA” token would be good for another taco. Only one “EXTRA” token may be used per meal. There will be no refunds for children who are missing the day of the lunch, so please make arrangements for a sibling or a friend to pick-up the lunch. Please use this form to order hot lunch tokens and pay in advance. You may order as many tokens as you wish depending on how many children you have and on how many lunches in advance you want to purchase. Students can pay on a per lunch basis if you choose not to use the token method. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Irvine School Parent Council Mental Illness Awareness Week October 6 -12, 2013 Nearly 1 in 5 Canadians will experience a mental illness at some point in their lives. This may include a mental disorder such as depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress, schizophrenia or substance abuse. Yet, many of these people will not ask for help because they feel ashamed or are afraid that others will reject them or treat them negatively because of their mental illness. People living with mental illness and their friends/family often say that the stigma and discrimination they face is worse than the illness itself. You can reduce stigma and discrimination: Get Informed www.miaw.ca www.cmha.ca Get to know, spend time with, and support a person living with mental illness. Help is available and recovery is possible www.albertahealthservices.ca/mentalhealth.asp October is International Walk to School Month Why walk? It’s a good habit for your children to develop; they can sustain as they grow which leads to better health later. Walking to school is a good time to bond too – parents only spend an average of 49 minutes a day with their children. Walking to school is a practical and free way to get in some quality time. Need to drive? Try Park & Walk. Park a short distance from school and walk 5 to 10 minutes the rest of the way. Park & Walk has many benefits such as: increasing your daily physical activity, getting your children moving outdoors, reducing traffic congestion and emissions around the school as well as helping you and your children to know the local neighbourhood. For more info visit: www.saferoutestoschool.ca Helpful Halloween tips for Healthy Smiles: Halloween is a fun time for kids, but candy and poor brushing can increase the risk of tooth decay. Knowing which treats are good and not-so-good for your teeth can help protect your child’s teeth from decay. Establish good habits with your children. Brushing and flossing daily can help kids protect their teeth even after Halloween. The good: Treats that are sugarless or low in sugar, not hard and easily brushed away after they are eaten. Sugarless gum, peanuts, sunflower seeds, popcorn or sugarless lollipops are good treats to hand out. Chocolate, a Halloween favourite, dissolves in your mouth instead of getting stuck in between your teeth. There are other non-food options too: gift certificates or fun toys like stickers, pencils and erasers, temporary tattoos, vampire teeth and don’t forget toothbrushes and floss, which will certainly help trick-or-treaters keep their smiles cavity free. The not-so-good: Treats that remain in the mouth for a long time are the prime culprits behind decay-causing bacteria. Avoid sticky sweets, such as caramels, toffees and fruit rollups. Hard candies, such as lollipops and jawbreakers, can also cause chipped teeth and may damage dental work. Halloween Costume Safety Some tips for choosing safe Halloween costumes for kids: Choose costumes that are made of non-flammable materials in case children wander too close to candles or jack-o’lanterns. Use hypoallergenic makeup instead of masks. Ill-fitting masks can obscure vision and lead to injuries and falls. Costumes should fit properly. They should be loose enough for warm clothing underneath, but not too loose or too long that they can be tripped over. Costume accessories such as swords and pitchforks should be soft and flexible to avoid injuries Choose bright or light-coloured costumes that are easy for motorists to see in the dark. Reflective tape should also be used to increase visibility Have a safe and spooky Halloween!
