You can conduct your own vehicle condition review prior to the
lease-end inspection. The process is simple, clear and concise.
With the help of our “First Class Finish Card” (the attached
card) you can determine what will be considered excess wear
and tear. In general, if the area of damage is covered by the
card, it’s considered normal wear and tear and you will not be
charged. However, we recommend you review pages 7 to 19 for
more details.

Maintenance responsibilities
In order to make your lease-end process as efficient as
possible, please review the Mercedes-Benz Financial Services
Lease-End Guide. It will provide you with a comprehensive
overview of your lease-end options and our vehicle condition
guidelines in the event that you choose to return your vehicle.
You also have the option to have a pre-inspection conducted by
a third party inspection vendor. If you determine that repairs
are required before you turn in your vehicle, have your dealer
provide the necessary service or complete any required
repairs before the end of your lease.

If you find any damage that needs repair, you will have
plenty of time to take care of it. Your insurance policy
may even pay for the repairs. This booklet, and the
checklist on pages 16 to 17, will help you conduct your
own Vehicle Condition Review.
More detailed information is provided on pages 5 and 6. Remember to ask about leasing or purchasing another
new or pre-owned smart fortwo or Mercedes-Benz.
2Extend your lease
I f you are interested in extending your lease, contact your dealer or a Mercedes-Benz Financial Services Lease
Maturity Advisor at 1-866-202-6969.
If you are over the kilometrage allowed by your lease,
the Optional Vehicle Condition Review will indicate
the estimated excess kilometrage charge at time of
inspection. Please note that you will be charged for
any additional excess damage and/or kilometrage that
occurs after the Optional Vehicle Condition Review up
until the time of turn-in.
Final excess wear and tear charges will be determined
by Mercedes-Benz Financial Services after the vehicle
is returned to the dealership.

At three months to one month before lease-end
The optional Vehicle Condition Review lets you evaluate
your vehicle’s condition by using The First Class Finish
Card Test and guidelines provided herein. Please review
the Vehicle Condition Guidelines on pages 7 to 19.
It’s also a good time to make sure your scheduled
maintenance service is up to date. In addition,
Mercedes-Benz Financial Services will offer to schedule
a third party pre-inspection at your location of choice.
1 Condition Review and Vehicle Return
If you have any damage, the dealer may estimate the
repair cost. This is the amount you may owe for excess
wear and tear — unless repairs are made before you
return the vehicle. Consult your dealer for assistance
in performing the repairs.
3Pay off your vehicle
Anytime during your lease, you can pay off your vehicle or finance the purchase price
(subject to credit approval) by contacting your dealer or Mercedes-Benz Financial Services at 1-866-202-6969.

Giving you peace of mind as you approach the end of your lease.
Note: This Optional Vehicle Condition Review and/or the
pre-inspection is NOT required at this time if you are
purchasing your vehicle or extending your current lease for
more than 3 months.
At lease-end
Mercedes-Benz Financial Services will inspect every vehicle
after the return and the final kilometrage and excess
kilometrage (if any) will be recorded. You will be charged
for any excess wear and tear found at that time. This final
inspection takes place after you have turned in your vehicle;
therefore, you won’t have the opportunity to make any repairs.
Kilometrage provision
When you signed your lease agreement, you agreed
to drive up to a predetermined number of kilometres
during the term of your lease. If your kilometrage is
over that amount when you return your vehicle, there
will be an excess kilometre charge. (Refer to your
lease agreement for the per-kilometre rate.) To find
out if you may have an excess kilometre charge, simply
complete the worksheet on pages 18 to 19.
Safety issues
As your lease agreement states, anything that makes
the vehicle unsafe or unlawful to operate is also
considered damage.
When you return your vehicle to a smart Centre, your completed
and signed copy of the Vehicle Return Receipt will be your
record of the vehicle’s return.
Maintenance responsibilities
Under the terms of The First Class Lease, you agreed to have
your smart fortwo serviced as the manufacturer recommended.
Please refer to your Operator’s Manual to make sure you
followed maintenance policies and schedules.

As stated in your lease agreement, you are responsible
for excess wear and tear. The Vehicle Condition
Guidelines help define what is considered excess wear
and tear, and will help determine the condition of your
vehicle, including its interior, exterior and mechanics.
Generally, when there’s damage, there is excess wear
and tear. And according to your lease agreement, you
are financially responsible for its repair. The following
pages include specifics on when damage is considered
excess wear and tear.

Specific guidelines
Specific guidelines will be used to evaluate your vehicle’s
condition. As long as your smart fortwo meets these established
guidelines, it will be considered free of excess wear and tear.
Rim Scuff
What makes the grade?
All four tires are the right size and speed rating
with at least .32 cm of tread depth (4/32 inches).
For smart-approved specifications, see the sticker
found inside of the door for further information.

The First Class Finish Card Test
One way to easily determine what is and what isn’t
considered damage is The First Class Finish Card Test.
It’s simple. Generally, if exterior or interior damage
cannot be seen when placing the First Class Finish Card
over it, then it “passes the test” and you will not be
charged.*

Body panels must have original smart parts with all
panels matching in colour
Any type of interior damage that passes The First
Class Finish Card Test, excluding tears, cuts, holes
or burns (regardless of size), stains (that cannot be
removed) and safety items (e.g. torn seat belts)
Any bumper scuff that does not alter the underlying
material, regardless of size (if the underlying
material is cut, shaved, torn, etc., then The First Class
Finish Card Test applies)
Any scratch that does NOT go through the paint,

exact service requirements can only be determined by
an approved smart diagnostic analysis.

All factory-installed parts are present, undamaged
and in good working order. Any modification installed
by an authorized smart Centre must be intact;
otherwise, there will be a charge to restore the
vehicle to its original condition.
