7D Heritage Discovery - Hakka, Chaoshan & Fujian (OXP) Hong Kong/Shenzhen/Huizhou/Shantou/Chaozhou/Meizhou/Dapu/Yongding/Xiamen Introduction • The ancestor of Malaysian Chinese were originally from China, and they traveled and lived in Malaysia to make a living. As time goes by, most of the later generation of Chinese has never had a chance to understand their motherland. So, let's take a trip back to your native land and learn about its culture! Of course, to sample every delicious authentic dishes as well! Picturesque Homeland - Chaozhou • Area: Shantou, Chaozhou • Culture: Paifang Street, Jiadixiang • Chaozhou, also widely known as Teochew, is a historical and cultural city where numerous of ‘paifang’ (gateway) can be found. • The famous Paifang Street, which is also known as Gateway Street was originates from its 20 historic gateways which lined along the street, and it is also one of the largest ancient gateway street. The unique street is also a hub for Chaozhou specialties, including its delicious snacks and also the cultural Chaozhou opera. It is also famous for its exquisite handicraft such as wood carvings and embroidery. • Just a few street from the southern of the ancient city, you'll find the Jiadixiang that filled with ancient family houses of the merchant families in Chaozhou. Jiadixiang is a neighborhood which retains the Ming and Qing street pattern and a lot of ancient residential. By just strolling along the Jiadixiang that is less than 200m with numbers of ancient houses lined up on the side, it will gives you a flashback of the old days of Chaozhou. Ancient residential along Jiadixiang. Authentic Dishes • Marinated Duck Meat Chaozhou dishes were originally from Cantonese cuisine. Marinated Duck Meat is highly recommended for its aromatic taste. • Pan Fried Chives Dumplings The thin and soft dumpling pastry is filled with chives. Steamed dumplings of chives filling are being dry-fried before it served. Its pastry is crispy with a sweet and juicy tasted filling. Local Snacks & Souvenirs • Lao Xiang Huang It was originally made from a fruit named Buddha's hand. Buddha's hand is a medicinal fruit. The Chaozhou people preserved it with herbs and honey, in a clay jar. It appears to be black in color, and as soft as the paste. It acts as a medicine for cough when it served as tea. Benefits: Detox and aids for digestion. The longer the Buddha's hand has been preserved, the higher price it is. • Medicinal Tangerine A famous specialty in Chaozhou. It has the medicine benefits of dispelling cold, detoxification and expectorant effects. It is mainly used for the treatment of cough, throat inflammation, chest distension and wind elimination. • Chinese Wampee It is said to have stomachic and cooling effects and to act as a vermifuge. Chinese Wampee is a neutral medicinal fruit. It helps in digestion, chest distension, hay fever, detoxification, and bronchitis. Historical Homeland - Hakka • Area: Meixian, Huizhou, Tai Po, Yongding • Culture: Meizhou Hakka Park, Meizhou Hakka Dragon House, Tai Po Tai'an House, High North Earth Buildings, Hakka Museum • Meizhou Hakka Park is beautiful elite neighborhood that reminds you of a China-style Disneyland. In this 163 acres beautiful land, it consists Hakka architectures, museum, outdoor theater, souvenir stands, pavilions and monuments that reflects that Hakka culture and arts. • Hakka Walled Village, also known as Weilong House, which means Circled Dragon House- a form resembling the curved body of a dragon wrapped around the perimeter of the complex. It is a large multi-family communal living structure that is designed to be easily defensible. It is typically designed for defensive purposes and consist of one entrance and no windows at the ground level. • Tai Po Tai'an Building owned a history of 247 years. It is an extremely rock building. It holds up to 200 rooms. • Gaobei Tuluo is located at the northern of Gaotou Village. Gaobei tuluo is a beautiful land that consists numbers of tuluo which surrounded by picturesque mountains and rivers. Gaobei Tuluo is one of the Fujian Tuluo that was being listed in UNESCO World Heritage. • Chengqi Building , also known as 'Tianzhu Building' which means Building of God's Support, as it was said that it has been a good weather during the three years of construction of the Chengqi Building. Back to its heyday, there was up to 600 residents, and today, it has up to 300 residents. • Hakka Museum is where you can reveals the mysteries of Hakka culture. It is made up of the Hakka Main Hall and three ancillary halls: Huang Zunxian Memorial Hall, University Presidents Hall and Generals Hall. • The Hakka Museum tells the story of Hakka. In this huge museum, it reveals the origin of Hakka, the people of Hakka, the culture of Hakka and also the arts of Hakka. With the exhibition of Hakka historical and cultural relics, it has attracted more than 300,000 locals and travelers. Authentic Dishes • Meigan Cai cooked with Meat Meigan cai, a specialty of Hakka, is a type of pickled vegetable. Meigan Cai cooked with meat is characterized in that the is its glossy yet delicious red sauce. It is fat but not greasy. • Yong Tau Foo Yong Tau Foo, literally Stuffed Tofu, is one of the more popular dishes with deep Hakka origins. It consists of tofu cubes heaped with minced meat and herbs, then fried until golden brown, or sometimes braised. • Salt-Baked Chicken Salt-baked Chicken was originally baked in a heap of hot salt, but many modern restaurants simply cook in brine, or cover it with a salty mixture before steaming it or baking it in an oven. Local Snacks & Souvenirs • Meigan Cai Meigan Cai, literally ‘molded dried vegetable’, is a type of dry pickled Chinese mustard of the Hakka people from Huizhou. It consists of a whole head of various varieties of Chinese mustards and cabbages that has undergone an elaborate process consisting of drying, steaming, and salting. Charming Homeland - Fujian • Area: Xiamen • Culture: Hui and Stone Cultural Garden with Hui’an Women Folk Show & Gulang Island • Xiamen is one of the first urban civilization in China. It is also the winner of 'International Garden City', 'National Sanitary City', 'National Garden City', 'National Environmental Protection Model City', 'Best Tourism City of China' and 'Top Ten Ideal City of Habitation" awards. • Hui and Stone Cultural Garden & Hui’an Women Folk Show The cultural park is an integrated park which has a collection of stone exhibition, artistic creation, cultural exchange, for both tourism and education purposes. Through exquisite stone architectures and superb stonework with elegant environment, the perfect combination for the display of Fujian stone cravings art has a long history. It presented the unique Hui'an Women Folk Show regularly. Gulangyu Island, a car-free island designated as a 5A National Tourism Scenic Spot, and a top-ten most scenic provincial areas. Popular among local tourists, it is renowned for its beaches, winding lanes and varied architecture. International Architecture Exhibition, where the eastern and western culture of Gulang Island met, is located in Xiamen Gulangyu Scenic Area. Heritage Chinese architectures can be found in this magnificent place, including religion and landscape architectures and many more. Shuzhuang Garden is named after the original owner Lin Erjia, a wealthy Taiwanese businessman. The garden was once a private villa of Lin Erjia, meant as an exquisite replica of Banqiao villa. The Piano Museum - Given Gulangyu’s musical heritage, it is no surprise that it is the Asia's largest piano museum. It is a museum of piano through the ages and it has over 200 pianos, including rare specimens from the 1800s. It exhibited up to 30 pianos which made in USA, UK, France and many more. Wuyuan Bay Boardwalk covered an area of 85 hectares, which equivalent to half of Gulang Island. It is the largest park in Xiamen, and also the largest wetland ecological park. Authentic Dishes • Mini Buddha Jumps Over the Wall The stew consists of many ingredients, including meats, bamboo shoots, scallops, sea cucumber, mushrooms, taro and many more ingredients. It requires one to two full days to prepare. It is nutritious and rich taste. It consists more than 10 ingredients & condiments. • Oyster Omelette Oyster omelette is a Chinese dish that is widely known in Fujian, and has constantly been ranked by many foreigners as one of the most addictive food in the world. It is served with the signature sweet and spicy sauce in Fujian. Local Snacks & Souvenirs • As Xiamen is surrounded by the ocean, it is famous for its variety of fresh seafood.
