Sherrill Hills SMASHES Depositor Record
The traditional RLC
construction preview was
anything but at Sherrill
Hills.
The Sherrill Hills
“Sneak-A-Peak” was a 2day event vs the standard
one-day affair. The VIPs
were top priority, so depositors only were invited
to tour and enjoy a barbecue lunch on June 7. Depositors were excited to
show their new apartments
off to friends and family
members. A photo booth
captured depositors donning their red hard hats,
and gave them a special
souvenir to take home.
That afternoon, business
and professional people
were invited for tours and
a social hour.
Saturday, June 8, was
open to the public.
Approximately 350 people attended and the day
ended with 22 deposits,
smashing the previous record of 13 at the Robinwood Construction Party.

cessful 2-day event with
the help of Dal and Cassie
Smith, Sherrill Hills Managers, and Bob and Linda
Oshel, VPs of Manager
Training for RLC. Community managers, marketers, and home office staff
were on board to assist
with set-up, registration,
and tours. This Team was
easily recognized by their
orange construction vests
and yellow hard hats.
Local area businesses
donated refreshments and
attendees enjoyed live entertainment by guitarist,
Tommy Santelli.
When one visitor was
asked how they heard
about the event, she responded, “It’s the talk of
the town!”
Indeed, as Sherrill Hills
is the only retirement
resort of its kind in the
Knoxville area. Sherrill
Hills looks forward to an
August 1, 2013 opening.
With a 49% occupancy as
of this writing, all indications are that Sherrill Hills
will shine as RLC’s newest community.

Reflection Ridge New American Legion Post
Three months ago, the
American Legion hardly
crossed the minds of Reflection Ridge Retirement
residents Rodney
Sampson, Melvin Finuf,
and Frank Foulkes. Now,
it’s right in front of them.
The three sat in front of a
packed auditorium at Reflection Ridge to receive
their charter for a new
American Legion post.
It is the second Legion
post in Wichita, and one of
just a handful in the country that is located in a
retirement community.
Foulkes, a World War II
veteran, said not all of the
veterans can drive at
night, so having the post
within the retirement
community is one of the
many benefits.
“It’s going to keep us
active,” he said.
Members of the post
started last year at Grasslands Estates had been
visiting other communities to let them know
about the idea. Word
started to get around and
veterans at Reflection
Ridge thought a post
could be a possibility at
their location.
The new post already has
20 to 25 people registered.
Many of those have been
members elsewhere, but
have decided it’s more
convenient to attend at Reflection Ridge. The post is
also open to those who
don’t live at the retirement
community.
The Grasslands post has
seen success despite its
older age group, said
Doug Castleberry, one of
the officers there. “The
tough thing is everyone is
pretty old,” he said. “A
lot of us thought we were
through doing things, but
this has given us something to be proud of.”
Former Kansas State
Commander Paul Sanford
said new posts like this
mean a lot to the veterans
involved.
“You talk to some of
these guys, 89, 90 years
old, and now they’re acting like they’re 40,” Sanford said. “They feel like
they have a purpose.”
Riverstone’s Got Talent!
The Riverstone Theater
was packed with residents, family, and friends
as everyone gathered for
the Staff Talent Show.
From funny acts to a
beautiful violin solo, residents enjoyed a variety
show bar none.
New Lifestyle Director,
Anthony Madden, took
the role of Emcee for the
evening and delighted all
with his witty repartee.
Among the many funny
skits and great music,
Manager Lyn Karns and
volunteers Carolyn and
Al were a hit with their
“Frog” song.
But the all time favorite
performance was by
Rachel Tzarks, assistant
dining room supervisor.
Rachel wrapped up the
evening with her amazing
voice singing “Feeling
Good” by Nina Samone.

A True Jewel
After the kids were
gone, her husband expanded his love of making
things beautiful by purchasing a beat-up Rolls
Royce and beginning the
process of turning it into a
jewel.
The interior was in
tatters, the fenders rusted,
and the car didn't look like

when it rolled off the line
in 1935.
While the car was coming back to life, Opal’s
husband’s life was coming
to a close. Failing health
kept him from the garage
where the car was stored
and eventually he passed
away.
The last Friday night in
June was nearly perfect.
Low humidity and a light
breeze made it a gorgeous
night to be outdoors in Lincoln. Opal’s son chose this
night to bring his mother a
wonderful surprise.
Unbeknownst to her, he
had taken over where his
dad had left off. The diamond in the rough her
husband had left behind
was now a shining jewel.
The 1935 Rolls Royce had
been returned to its former
glory. With the rust gone
and the interior restored,
the car now looked like a
million bucks with its
gleaming white paint.

All Creatures Great & Small
Maple Ridge is located
in Omaha, but that
doesn’t mean it’s just another concrete and steel
building on a busy street.
Maple Ridge is fortunate to be surrounded by a
Christmas tree farm and a
protected branch of the
Elm Creek flood plain.
This unique location
means the retirement
community “neighborhood”
is also home to a great
number of species from
the animal kingdom.
Mink, turkey, owls, red
tail hawk, deer, fox,
ducks, and geese can all
be seen at one time or
another. The picturesque
Maple Ridge waterfall
attracts the water
fowl, and one
winter a hungry
mink had his way
with the fish in
the outdoor pond.
Nevertheless, the
wildlife that come
to visit always
bring a bit of joy
along.
Canada Geese are common visitors to the
Maple Ridge Falls.

A True Jewel (cont. from Page 3)
Residents of Savannah Pines quickly spread the word, and before long the portico was buzzing with admirers.
The ride around the parking lot was reserved for one very special lady. The woman who learned to love beautiful
things when she fell in love with a jeweler, had a special sparkle in her eye thanks to the son who inherited his
father's love for making things beautiful.
Manager Masters the Art of BBQ
When the Walnut Grove
Team talked about participating in the Millard
Business Association
BBQ Festival, they forgot
one thing. They signed up,
but as the fateful Saturday
approached they realized
the day conflicted with
Walnut Grove’s Chef
Orestes Cooper’s schedule
and no other kitchen help
were available.
Manager Matt Ritter
took on the challenge.
(Matt says he has never
smoked food before, so
this was a first for him.)
He spent the day before
searching for recipes and
techniques and finally
combined a number of
recipes for the marinade
and the rub.
They arrived at the
venue at 9:00 a.m. thinking they would be among
the first there, but were
sorely mistaken as most of
the contestants had been
there all night prepping
and cooking with monstrous grills that made
Walnut’s look like a
“Fisher Price toy.” The
contestants were serious
smokers and Matt gave
Walnut little chance of
finishing “in the money.”
So he cooked and turned
in his submission at the
3:00 p.m. deadline then
started packing up to head
back to Walnut.
“I wasn’t even around
for the awards ceremony
and was pleasantly surprised when our Marketing Director brought the
2nd Place trophy home.”
Why Chef couldn’t BBQ:
His son had a big swim
competition that day where
he received 2 first’s and a
second, and is undefeated
in the breast stroke this
year. Kudos!
Provident Crossings Sleuths & Celebrations
All smiles at Provident
Crossings! Residents had
a blast solving crime at
the first ever Murder
Mystery dinner.
It was a big hit with
many residents dressing
in character, and kitchen
staff put together a fun
“play-on-words” menu
(Titanic Iceberg Salad
and Death by Chocolate
Cake). The wine list included Red-Handed Red,
Innocent White, and Passionate Pink.
The murder mystery
evening started with
cocktail hour where the
scene was set, characters
introduced, and instructions given on how the
game was played.
Managers Mike and
Stacy Fuller did a great
job playing the parts of
the captain and captain’s
wife of the yacht, Elizabeth May (Provident
Crossings fine dining
hall). Wait staff were in
character with their yacht
club polo uniforms for
the evening.
Provident Crossings
also had a grand time as
they celebrated the 4th of
July with a patriotic pet
parade. It was great to
see all the residents with
their dogs and cats
dressed in their best red,
white, and blues. Mary
even found some fun
stockings with stars and
stripes. John was all
smiles when he was
asked to lead the parade
on a big three wheel bicycle. It’s been a great
summer at Provident!
