THE OBIC SEAGULLS
THE OBIC SEAGULLS April,2014 1 INTRODUCTION • We are an American Football club team based in the city of Narashino in the prefecture of Chiba. Located just 15 miles directly east of Tokyo. • We were founded as a corporate team, but for the past 10 years we have operated as a club team. • In an effort to develop the sport of American Football in Japan, we involve ourselves in various activities on and off the field. The goal of these activities are to grow the sport into a major and successful sport in the likes of baseball and soccer. 2 HISTORY • 1983, Team founded and administered as a corporate team within the company Recruit Co., Ltd. • 1988, The team became a priority club within Recruit Co., Ltd. Formally became a member of the football federation. • 1996, Won first league and national title. • 1998, National Champion. • 1999, Following an economic downturn, the team transitioned from a corporate team under Recruit Co., Ltd., to a club team. • 2002, Became a self-supporting club team. • 2003, Obic Co., Ltd., became the official main sponsor and the team officially became the “Obic Seagulls.” • 1996, 1998, 2005, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 National Champions. The most titles held by a Japanese organization. • 2012, Went on record as being the first club team in Japan (Amongst currently registered X league teams) to play in an international exhibition game (Germany/Dresden Monarchs). (General information about the game and summary included in this presentation). • 2013, Played in an international exhibition game in Dusseldorf, Germany vs. the Dusseldorf Panthers. Became the first Japanese team to win four consecutive national championships. 3 FIRST EXPERIENCE ABROAD INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE BOWL 2012 @ DRESDEN, GERMANY ・Winning the championship for the third straight time was the goal that we set for ourselves as a team at the outset of the season. For the second game of the Spring season we did something that no other club or corporate team in Japan has done. We became the first team to play against an international opponent overseas. We felt that such a game would be a great experience and challenge for our team. An experience and challenge that if handled properly would make us stronger as a team and ready to face all challengers back home in Japan. 4 INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE BOWL 2012 @ DRESDEN, GERMANY QB Shun Sugawara threw for 204 Yards and two touchdowns to help his Obic Seagulls to a 29-17 win against the Dresden Monarchs from Germany's top league, the GFL. In front of 5.900 fans at Dresden's Glücksgas Stadium Sugawara finished the Seagulls' first possession (10 plays, 66 yards) with a 5-yard pass to WR Ryoma Hagiyama for a 7-0 lead and threw a 33-yard strike to WR Kentaro Mori for a 17-3 lead on the Seagulls' third possession - a one-play drive that followed a fumble by Monarchs RB Larry Croom when he was brought down seven yards behind the line of scrimmage. The Seagulls scored on all four possessions of the first half. K Yosuke Kaneoya kicked two 25-yard field goals and the japanese champion took a 20-3 lead into halftime. K Jan Hilgenfeldt scored the only points in the first half for the Monarchs on a 48-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter. The home team made the game more interesting in the second half. On the second play of the third quarter DB Ladislav Jensik intercepted a deep pass to the left side by Sugawara at the Monarchs 37-yard line. The only mistake by Obic's offense was followed by an impressive six-minute drive (13 plays, 63 yards) and a 1-yard touchdown run by Warren Smith to cut the deficit to 20-10. And following a 41-yard field goal by Kaneoya on the Seagulls' ensuing possession the Monarchs went 75 yards in six plays and Smith threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to WR Radko Zoller on the first play of the fourth quarter to bring the Monarchs within six points (23-17). The Seagulls, though, never got in danger to lose the game. After the two teams traded punts the Seagulls took over at the Monarchs 44-yard line and six plays later QB Manabu Tatsumura threw a 6-yard touchdown pass over the middle to WR Ken Shimizu for a 29-17 lead with just over five minutes left to play. A Tatsumura pass for a potential two-point conversion failed. The Monarchs got the ball back twice in the final minutes but first had to punt after five plays and later reached the 36-yard line of the Seagulls before time ran out. 5 ALL-TIME RESULTS • In 26 seasons / 180 total games(including league, playoff and bowl games): 144 wins / 33 loses / 3 draws • X League championships (Japan X Bowl): 8 titles *(the most titles by any one team) • Japan national championships (Rice Bowl): 7 titles *(the most titles by any one team) 6 ORGANIZATIONAL MAKE-UP • The club team “Obic Seagulls” is administered by OFC Co., Ltd. The first game was held in 1934. • The college league is divided into 8 regions and consists of 220 teams. • American football on the high school level is divided into two regions(Kanto / Kansai) and the total number of teams nationwide are 114. Middle school competitions are also divided between these two regions, but only 30 teams currently compete. • The X league is the top league/level of football in Japan. It is a 4 division league that consists of 61 total teams. 8 THE X LEAGUE The X League is an amateur American football league in Japan. It was founded in 1996, and the four tier league(X1, X2, X3, and X4) are divided into three divisions(East, West, and Central). The X League is made up of two types of teams. Company teams are teams in which only employees of the sponsoring company are allowed to participate as players. Club teams have no such stipulations and are therefore fielded by players from different occupational backgrounds. Game rules are based on, and mirror those of the NCAA in the United States. The only major difference is the game length. The X League has opted to go with 12 minute quarters for the majority of its games as opposed to the traditional 15 minute quarters played at the American collegiate level. The regular season consists of three stages(1st stage, 2nd stage, final stage) in which all 18 teams in the top division vie for the X League title which is decided in the Japan X Bowl(X League championship game). The regular season usually starts the last week of August and ends with the national championship game(Rice Bowl)) on January 3rd. 9 THE X LEAGUE(CONT.) The are also two Spring tournaments(Pearl Bowl tournament, Green Bowl tournament) which are used by teams to ready themselves and evaluate new players before the start of the Fall season. The Spring season usually begins the last week of April and runs through the last week of June. Foreigners(Namely Americans) are often recruited to play for X League. There are strict rules in place regarding foreign player participation. The maximum number of foreigners on a single roster is limited to 4 players. Also, No more than 2 foreign players are allowed on the field of play per team. Lastly, foreign / with prior professional experience are disqualified from competing in the X League. X-League regulations require that all athletes work. Not only have Kevin, Frank, Byron, and Kai been key to Obic’s on-field success, they have all flourished away from the field in the Japanese corporate world. They are making the most of their opportunities, and are serving as great ambassadors of our sport, team, and home country of the United States. 32 NARASHINO, CHIBA • 2008, We began a hometown outreach program. (The goal of the program was to spread awareness of our team and activities throughout the community) • Held games at Chiba Marine Stadium(QVC Marine Field in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012), and Akitsu Soccer Stadium(2013). • Flag Football classes and events directed towards the city’s youth. • Participation in city festivals and events. • Recipients of the 2013 Narashino city 'Honorable Citizens Award'. 33 BE AN ALT IN THE CITY OF NARASHINO • The city of Narashino is currently looking for ALT’s for schools throughout the city. • The term ALT primarily to refers to English language speakers who assist with the teaching of English in elementary, junior high and high schools. ALTs are required to be college graduates, but they are usually not certified teachers like their Japanese colleagues. • Teaching abroad is a great opportunity to see the world and experience new cultures. To have the chance to live and work overseas is an opportunity that should not be missed. Japan is a safe, fun and rewarding choice of places to go. The experience, friendships formed and culture one will learn are all memories that will be held dear for life. • Kevin Jackson worked as an ALT for the 05’/06’ school year. 34 FLAG FOOTBALL 35 CITY OF TUSCALOOSA EXCHANGE PROGRAM ACTIVITIES 36 UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA-TUSCALOOSA EXCHANGE 37 FESTIVAL PRESENCE 38 COMMUNITY SERVICE CAMPAIGNS 39 PRIMARY SCHOOL EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT 40 HOMETOWN GAMES IN CHIBA 41 HOMETOWN FAN SUPPORT 42 VICTORY CEREMONY 43 Narashino city 'Honorable Citizens Award'. 44 THE ROAD AHEAD ・We would like to increase the number of people that love to watch and enjoy the sport of American Football here in Japan. ・We would also like to introduce the very engaging and attractive world of sports and all of its benefits to as many people as possible. To that end we would like to partner with other sports and organizations to create a community where such education can be made possible. ・Eventually we would like to raise and send out players from the city of Narashino/prefecture of Chiba that are able to compete in the NFL. 45
