SEASONAL
“There is a harmony in
autumn, and a lustre in
its sky, which through the
summer is not heard or
seen, as if it could not be,
as if it had not been!”
Percy Bysshe Shelley
Gallery
We too often look upon autumn as a time of endings,
forgetting the newness of the fall season—new sweaters
to nuzzle into on bracing mornings and new pencils in our
backpacks on the first day of a new school year. Autumn is a
time for taking lazy afternoon walks (or tumbles) and a time for
searching out the portly flawlessness of the perfect pumpkin.
We feel a new urgency in autumn—a sense of purpose
absent from our lazy summer mindset. Now, we find ourselves
putting our homes and our gardens to bed; we are preparing
ourselves for shorter days and cooler weather. But as the sun
settles itself lower on the horizon, casting honey-gold light
upon us, we have no choice but to admire the beauty that
abounds—whether in nature or on the faces we love best.
As William Cullen Bryant noted, “Autumn is the year’s last,
loveliest smile.”
So it is.
