He writes songs about life growing up in the south and the family his parents have raised him to love. Born in Atlanta and raised in Gainesville, Georgia, Alex grew up learning the sport of horseback riding and barrel racing alongside his mother. An accomplished rider himself, Alex has a deep appreciation for cowboy culture and has certainly learned how to lasso an audience and give them quite a ride. In middle school Alex continued his vocal pursuits with formal training under the tutelage of choral director and mentor, Eric Elliott. With the support of his parents, Alex began performing in local restaurants and bars during his freshman year while continuing to hone the craft of songwriting. His hard-driving approach to performing eventually landed him in the Maysville studio of Lee Davis where Alex recorded his first record at the age of fifteen. Through the continuance of building relationships in the industry, Alex has had the good fortune of penning songs with highly regarded songwriters Mike Dekle, Bruce Burch, Byron Hill, and Red Bow recording artist, Rachel Farley. Those who know Alex off stage describe him as somewhat shy and reserved, but on stage Alex is anything but. The maturity and strength of his voice might surprise first-time listeners who are very typically captivated by his distinctive style and high-energy performances. With the continued encouragement of his parents, Alex relentlessly pursues carving out his niche in the country music industry. He has extended his performances to include venues throughout the southeast such as Wild Bill’s in Duluth, GA, the Bluebird Café, Tootsies, and Hard Rock Café in Nashville, TN, and the Flora Bama in Gulf Shores, AL, and has shared the stage with Bucky Covington, Jimmy Hall, Frankie Ballard, and Gavin DeGraw. …three for the money, and go man, GO!” Alex Hall rocks! Thomas / January 5, 2012 Gainesville teen singer/songwriter builds musical career with CD, traveling performances Alex Hall may be young, but his musical resume hold its own against performers twice his age. For the last several years, the 17-year-old Gainesville resident has been busy writing songs, performing live and opening shows for artists like Frankie Ballard and Bucky Covington. He’s also mentored younger musicians through First Verse, an after-school program for students interested in songwriting. It was created by members of the John Jarrard Foundation. Although he spends a lot of time on the road traveling to shows all over the Southeast, Alex took a break to talk to The Times about his latest achievements: Question: How crazy was 2011 for you? A: I played 125 plus shows last year. In July, we released a new CD called “The Way I Was Raised.” I also have written several new songs, and I was invited to attended the Country Music Awards. That was awesome! Q: What has it been like interacting with industry veterans at such a young age? Has anyone given you any advice that really stuck with you? A: It is crazy to be meeting people that you have looked up to your whole life, and earning their respect as not only an artist, but a songwriter as well. People that have given me the most advice and really been inspirational to me are Eric Elliott, Mike Dekle, Bruce Burch, and Lee Davis. Q: Have your roles as student and Gainesville resident been replaced by your life on the road as a musician? A: I still go to Chestatee High School and I do still live here in Gainesville, but we spend a lot of time up in Nashville, too. It is definitely my second home. Q: If someone has never seen you live, or heard any of your original material, how would you describe an Alex Hall Band performance? A: It is very high-energy show. Even on the ballads, you can feel the soul in the music. Our music has a little blues, rock, R&B and a whole lotta country. Q: How can folks get sample your music for themselves? A: This weekend, I will be doing an acoustic set at McArthur’s (Grill and Pub) on Cleveland Highway on Friday at 9 p.m. And Saturday, I will be doing a full band show at Wild Wings at 9:30 p.m. Also, you can check out my music, dates, videos and pictures at www.thealexhallband.com. Local singer-songwriter 16-year-old Alex Hall will be performing acoustic music each night and during Sunday’s intermission at the bull riding competition. “They were generous enough to allow Alex to play (at the event),” said Bill Hall, Alex’s father. “It’s the first time he’s played at this event but he’s played a lot in Gainesville. He’s been playing in Gainesville for almost two years.” Recently, Alex Hall performed in Tunica, Miss., at the Fortune 5 Barrel Racing Finals awards ceremony. “There were probably 2,000 people there that he performed for,” Hall said. “(Alex) used to compete on barrel horses but he’s given that up to write songs and sing.” As Alex’s manager, Hall hopes to see his son succeed in the music industry. Hall said people have questioned him about how much he’s supporting his teenage son. Some have speculated that because of his age, singing will merely be a fad for Alex. “He has such a passion for it,” Hall said. “The child gets up at 6 o’clock in the morning and plays his guitar until 11 or 12 o’clock at night. When he’s not in school, he’s playing the guitar or writing a song, or he’s at the vocal coach.” Alex Hall hopes his gig at the bull riding event will persuade people to come to the after party at 9 p.m. Saturday at The Monkey Barrel on the Gainesville square to enjoy The Alex Hall Band. Members include Hall on lead vocals and guitar; Chris Stowe, bass; Thomas Branch, drums and vocals; and Travis Leggett, lead guitar. “They can hear me and hopefully they will check out the stuff online and then come out Saturday night and hear the band,” he said. “It’s gonna be an awesome night. The bull riding is good family entertainment and, of course, the after party is going to be (fun) for the adults,” Bill Hall said. There is a MySpace and Facebook page for Alex Hall fans where a sampling of some of his music can be found. “Take Me Anywhere,” a song about getting out of the city and back onto a dirt road “anywhere,” has had more than 2,500 hits on his MySpace page. “Take Me Anywhere” was the 14th most played song in 2010 on the Backyard Country list (made up of local unsigned artists) on 94.9 FM-The Bull Atlanta, according to Lance Houston, an on-air personality and programmer for the station. Alex Hall said his inspiration for writing a song can come from any place. “It can come from watching a movie, something that you’ve seen someone else experience or that you’ve experienced.” One thing is certain. “I am very passionate about my music,” he said. “I just love to see the people’s reaction, how they react to the different songs that we play and how it affects them.” WWW.
