for miners’ families of the Giesche
corporation.
It was registered in the list of Historic
Monuments as an original example of
industrial construction. It is included in
the Industrial Monuments Route of the
Silesian Voivodship.

Katowice is filled with numerous monuments of modernistic architecture dating back to the 20-ies and 30-ies of the
20th century. The most interesting of
them can be admired in the southern
part of the City Centre (e.g. the Skyscraper, the garrison church, tenement
houses in the area of the SkłodowskiejCurie street). Infokiosks with multimedia presentations were situated close to
the buildings creating the route.

The renown of Katowice as a ‘city
of coal and steel’ is only a tradition
today, based on which a new quality develops. Owing to investments
started a few years ago the capital
city of the Upper Silesia became a
leading centre of culture and business tourism in Poland. In the very
city centre, in the vicinity of the
‘Spodek’ Entertainment-Sports
Arena, a brand new district of the
city originated, named the Zone of
Culture. Apart from the ‘Spodek’
it consists of three great investment projects - the International
Congress Centre (MCK), the new
building of the National Symphonic
Orchestra of Polish Radio and the
new Silesian Museum. The buildings are situated in the area of former ‘Katowice’ mine.
