LISTEN UP Music itself is explored in this month’s TV picks. Page 186. Perfect duo: MOVIE MELODIES AND TV TUNES “Sound and music are 50 per cent of the entertainment in a movie.” — George Lucas virginaustralia FEBRUARY 2015 | 177 EXPERIENCE MOVIES WITH MELODY Get ready for a real treat on board this month, with a collection of great films featuring, and about, music. Words Erin Free / FilmInk THE STUNNING Whiplash not only announces a new star in writer and director Damian Chazelle, but also puts a new spin on the music movie, with its bold story about a young drumming student, Andrew Nieman (Miles Teller, above) whose ambition brings him to a bullying and aggressive teacher (Golden Globe winner, JK Simmons), leading to a sweat-soaked, blood-stained battle of wills. “The idea was to shoot these music scenes as though they were action scenes and to shoot a concert as though it were a bank robbery,” says Chazelle. “The challenge is unlike dance or action movies, because when you’re sitting playing instruments everyone stays in one place. It’s really the music and camera that provide the action.” Chazelle’s own musical background informed much of Whiplash. “I’m a drummer myself,” he says. “A lot of stuff in the movie was based on my own experiences. The script was a way of exorcising those demons. My band leader wasn’t quite as abusive, but there was a lot of the subtler stuff like rotating different drummers, or having the band watch while you start and stop something for an hour. That stuff happened routinely, and it leaves a mark on you. The film came from my experience of that, and how music felt like life and death.” The music in Begin Again is of a far sweeter kind. Warm, moving, passionate and with something to say, Begin Again is a delightful paean to the power of rhythm and melody, but still retains a grit and earthiness. Keira Knightley’s struggling songstress finds inspiration on the streets of New York and in the process changes the life of Mark Ruffalo’s deeply depressed character, a past-his-prime record executive. “I wanted to see if music could actually make you turn back from suicide,” director John Carney says. “And then, metaphorically, could music improve your life and change it in an actual sense, in a daily sense?” There are other flicks on board this month embracing the beauty of song. The 2006 cult classic Once tracks the musical bond that forms between two poetic souls, while the 1980s-set metal musical Rock of Ages boasts big hair, big tunes and Tom Cruise in an eye-popping performance. The biopic Walk the Line offers careerbest work from Joaquin Phoenix as music icon Johnny Cash and Reese Witherspoon as June Carter, while 20,000 Days on Earth paints an unconventional portrait of Aussie goth rock hero, Nick Cave. SMALL-SCREEN SONGS Keep an eye (and ear) out for music-themed TV, too. The tunes continue on the small screen with a selection of musicthemed television shows. There’s the music travelogue Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways, which sees Dave Grohl and co visit America’s most famous recording locations. There’s also a number of performance specials such as Tony Bennett’s New York, Coldplay: Ghost Stories Live, One Direction: The Inside Story and Paul Simon: Live At Webster Hall, New York, as well as documentaries 5 Seconds of Summer: Up Close and Personal, When Björk Met Attenborough and My Music Brain. 20,000 emotions “Music creates an emotional connection with you,” says 20,000 Days on Earth’s co-director Jane Pollard of the film’s quietly mesmerising power that draws viewers into the world of Australian rock icon Nick Cave. STEP UP TO THE MIC After a positive meeting, Begin Again director John Carney had one important question for his potential leading lady, Keira Knightley: can you hold a tune? “I said that if she could do that, then we could make it work, because she doesn’t have to be a big singer,” Carney says. “It was never a Judy Garland thing. Her character Gretta is not a belter, she’s smooth and delicate. Keira indicated she could do that. She was right, and it worked. She took a few lessons, and had a voice coach training her a little bit, which was great.” virginaustralia FEBRUARY 2015 | 179 EXPERIENCE INFLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT KEY: red seatback wireless MOVIE HIGHLIGHTS Movies and music go hand-in-hand this month with our tuneful film picks as well as a selection of recent releases including Gone Girl and One Direction: The Inside Story. The Hangover T RED U T A FE XSET BO THE HANGOVER A booze-soaked triple shot of bad behaviour. he hilarious tale of three bleary-eyed, memory-scattered buddies — the cocky Phil (Bradley Cooper), oddball Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and put-upon everyman Stu (Ed Helms) — stumbling around Las Vegas while trying to figure out what happened the night before, rates as a true modern comedy classic. The modestly budgeted 2009 comedy grossed more than US$460 million worldwide and helped forge Hollywood careers for its stars. Informed by the in-yourface comedy stylings of director Todd Phillips (Road Trip, Starsky & Hutch, Old School), as well as a tight script and a host of brilliant performances, The Hangover is comic gold. And where there’s gold, there’s sequels, with the whole crew returning for the equally riotous, Bangkok-set The Hangover Part II and final instalment The Hangover Part III, which saw the Wolfpack return to Las Vegas. Equal parts absurd and funny, the trilogy’s creative premise combines likeable characters and zingy one-liners, and unveils the camaraderie in male friendships that isn’t often explored in film. Phil’s devil-may-care attitude, Stu’s world-weariness and Alan’s delight at being included reveal the different personalities that can come together to create male bonding. From Mike Tyson singing Phil Collins to a tiger on the loose, a too-cute lost baby, face tattoos and severed fingers, The Hangover offers comic mayhem and a riot of a time on board this month.
