Planes, trains and fewer cars?
Out with the old, make room for: the new Mineta San Jose
International Airport
I recently attended a presentation by Rick Dressler, the community
liaison to surrounding cities, businesses, and related public
organization for Mineta SJ Airport. Yes, the new airport is
scheduled to open in 2010, with a brand new Terminal B replacing
the old Terminal C and with a brand new design. This is not
welcome news for those of us with a San Jose history interest.
Alas, Silicon Valley must make room for this new, modern facility to
be able to manage the 10.7 Million passengers and 183 Million
Pounds of Cargo (statistics from 2007 per website). Two positives
will be, of the several new amenities, the shared use of the new
ticket counters and gates by all airlines. This technique is in use at
SFO Airport and will provide increased efficiency in the use of the
limited space during departures and arrivals. And, there will be a
gain of estimated 70,000 new jobs. Hooray!

Leave car at home and take the train for local California
vacations
Are you tired of sitting in the congested traffic on your local
vacations to/from the Bay Area? Remember to take Capitol
Corridor Intercity Rail Service with stops in San Jose and Santa
Clara, and Oakland and visit Sacramento this year. An adult ticket
(one way) is approx. $32 which may be pre-purchased or bought on
the train.
If you live in surrounding cities, take the light rail, bus, or BART and
transfer to these train stations.
This is green for the environment and healthy for people. Stay in
Sacramento or, if you must drive, rent a car and take day trips from
Sacramento. Hint – this eliminates the congestion departing and
returning on the Interstate and is affordable transportation method
to most everyone.

Dia de Portugal Festival at History
Park in Kelley Park in San José
The Portuguese Historical Museum will be celebrating its sixth
Dia de Portugal Festival on Saturday, June 13, from 10:00 am
to 6:30 pm at History Park in Kelley Park in San Jose.
Admission is free and open to the public.
“It’s a day for everyone,” stated Angela Simões, Dia de
Portugal Festival Chairperson. “Young and young-at-heart,
people of Portuguese heritage, those who enjoy Portuguese
culture and anyone who enjoys good food,”
In June of each year, communities throughout the world
celebrate Dia de Portugal, a national holiday in Portugal and
elsewhere. It is a time to recognize of the influence of the
Portuguese as a result of their leadership during the Era of
Discoveries, which was followed by worldwide immigration
throughout the following centuries. Few countries have
remained untouched by the influence of the Portuguese. In
California, a state with many people of Portuguese heritage,
these celebrations have taken place annually at various locals
since 1966.
“The Dia de Portugal festival offers lots of entertainment and a
traditional Portuguese parade,” adds Simões, “all in the
picturesque setting of History Park.”
For the Portuguese this is a celebration held throughout the
world on June 10 of each year and honors the life of their
national poet and Portugal’s greatest man of letters, Luis de
Camões. Pronounced Cam-oyes, his principal work, The
Lusiads, is considered Portugal’s national epic poem.
History Park is located in Kelley Park, 1650 Senter Road,
between Keyes and Phelan Avenues in San Jose. Admission

Team Building at the
Winchester Mystery House
Bay Area companies and organizations are
looking for fun things to do locally to bring the team

Winchester Mystery House offers groups of 15 or more
people a new idea: Photo Scavenger Hunts through the
beautiful but bizarre mansion built by rifle heiress Sarah

elect a team leader, team scribe, team photographer,
and team clue finders to make certain all parts of the

Survey: Meeting Planners Choosing
Venues with Good Customer Service

When they're choosing venues in a down economy, meeting
planners say that customer service is the deciding factor,
according to event management company J. Spargo &
Associates Inc., which recently surveyed meeting planners
attending the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association
International's (HSMAI) Ninth Annual Affordable Meetings
Mid-America Conference & Exposition, taking place April 12 in Chicago.
According to the J. Spargo survey—which was
independently analyzed by 20|20 Assessment, a service of
hospitality industry consultancy HVS—85 percent of
meeting planners cite customer service as the No. 1 factor
influencing their selection of meeting venues during the
current recession.
"The economic downturn, in part, is motivating planners to
focus on best practices that promote efficiency in their own
operations and to seek out venues that offer tremendous
value to their clients and, most importantly, deliver guest
experiences with 'staying power' — that is, venues that
spotlight customer service," 20|20 Assessment President
Dr. James Houran said in a statement.

Is Technology replacing Personalized Service?
At breakfast time I like to pick up the newspaper in my driveways and then read
the local and international news and the editorials over a cup of coffee.
Occasionally I clip one or the other article to share with friends, relatives, or
colleagues.
At many a concierge desk, one or more complimentary newspapers are there for
the guests. That will soon change: Your guests will file into the Wi-Fi equipped
breakfast room, armed with their laptops or Blackberry PDAs, start the day by
reading their e-mails, read the news on-line, and maybe even make some
investment decisions. ‘While doing so, they will likely have their earphones plugged
into their iPhone or MP3 to avoid that the servers, or other hotel guests won’t
invade their privacy. The enjoyment of having a tasty breakfast and a good cup of
coffee or tea will be incidental – time is money, after all.
If there is still a newspaper available, it will be pitifully thin. Technology is about to
de-personalize many things. The service Concierges provide may become its
victim, safe at high-end hotels that want to retain their four-star status.
While I admit that I am an old-timer and attached to the pleasant, personalized
aspects of business or leisure travel, I don’t think I am alone in appreciating the
attention of a concierge, maitre-d or server. I encourage everybody in the
hospitality industry to sharpen and maintain his or her interpersonal skills. Many of
your guests may have become accustomed to doing without that friendly greeting,
that helpful hint, that expert advice about local resources, and – above all – that
friendly demeanor and smile we pride ourselves in. Let’s remind them that
technology has not and will not supplant the personal touch that is part of our skills
inventory, and that good service it is not an old-timer’s paradigm!

Those of you who attended the SVCA’s ‘2009 Hospitality Awards’
festivities at Club Auto Sport were probably awed by the flawless
execution of the venue as I was. Club Auto Sport provided the
perfect location, ambiance, and setting. To a attend a party
surrounded by the world’s most venerated automobiles – all in
show-room condition – is not an every-day occurrence. SVCA
thanks Club Auto Sport for its exemplary hospitality and warm
welcome.
Club Auto Sport is the newest member of SVCA and you may want
to make a note of the particulars that makes it a ‘must’ destination
for those of your clients who are seeking a unique, upscale location
for their next celebration – to recognize their customers,
