Our Jury - 2012 Spring Art Exhibition & Sale
JOHN C. CALHOUN
John Calhoun is a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute (BFA) and the Rhode Island School of Design (MFA). He has a studio in Holyoke and teaches art at Holyoke Community College and at Rhode Island School of Design (pre-college) and has also taught at
Springfield College. He has exhibited in many solo and group shows in New England
SUE KATZ
Sue Katz studied for a master’s degree in sculpture at Ohio State University. She also studied ceramics with Peter Voulkos, U.C. Berkeley, and art history with Irving Sandler, New York
University.
After teaching ceramics and contemporary art history at New Jersey City University for
five years, she moved to Western Massachusetts, raised a family, and co-founded and co-directed two community art galleries. She primarily creates art constructs combining painting and
mixed media and has exhibited in many New England galleries. Recent group shows include,
in 2011: Brush Gallery, Lowell, MA, Hampden Gallery, UMass, Amherst, Clark University,
Worcester, Bowersock Gallery in Provincetown and FPAC Gallery in Boston.
DENISE M. RIGGS
Denise M. Riggs attended Savannah College of Art and Design. She studied the archival
process, gum bi-chromate printing, which she practiced exclusively for ten years. In the late
90’s, she began to “see” color and break away from the strict darkroom parameters of the black
& white processes. She now carries a small format camera seeking to capture an everyday object in an unfamiliar, abstract way. Denise says, “I shoot “straight”, there are no manipulations
(no cropping or editing) in my work. Although it took me some time, I crossed the “digital divide” two years ago and am having lots of fun with the technology.”
Her solo show, Reflections, is at the Northampton Center for the Arts this month. In 2011,
her work was shown at the Danforth Art Museum in Framingham, The Cultural Center at Eagle
Hill, Hardwick and at the Easthampton City Arts+Gallery, in Easthampton.

Many thanks to each: Co-coordinators: David Dupuis & Susan James. Members:
Reed Coles, Betty Eisold, Mickey Kusek, Lynn Salem, Maureen Solomon, Roberta
Wilson, and Jerry Wilson. Marianne Gambaro is our publicist. James Hoffman assisted

1st Prize
Photography
Monson Arts Council 2012 Spring Art Exhibition & Sale
Joyce Skowyra
A Penny
Imagine That! ~ Prizes Awarded
Technically everything
works together beautifully
in Joyce's portrait of this
little girl — the light, the
composition, and especially
the haunting expression
captured on the girl's face.
The cropping of the head
was a risk that Joyce pulled
off successfully to bring the
viewer's focus down into
her subject’s world.
1st Prize ~ Painting
Michael D. Stevens
Brenda’s Answer ~ Acrylic
This abstract collage holds its own as
a well constructed "puzzle" wherein
the pieces fit to make a vibrant whole.
Jurors liked the sophisticated approach
and originality.
Best of Show
Doug Gillette ~ Cape Cod Landmark
Silverpoint
Jurors were unanimous in admiring the skill and vision of the artist. As juror Sue
Katz said, “This portrait is a beautiful example of using the Renaissance sfumato
technique of modulating tone to define volume, as opposed to line and edge. More
importantly, the mood of quiet and calm and even a self-confident presence engages
the viewer.”
President’s Award
Steve reviewed our show carefully, and he loved many of the works exhibited here,
but returned time and again to this portrait. It was, for him too, “the best of show.”
Committee Choice
2nd Prize ~ Painting
Frank Tencza ~ Still Life with Jointer Plane ~ Acrylic
This still life exemplifies its tradition of realistic detail with a dark background of a
domestic theme frozen in time, in this case a tool. The deep black background and the
frontal view of the plane makes a strong architectural-like composition and statement
about the love of craftsmanship, both of the painter and the owner of the tool.
2
Steve Wilda
Lemon Drops ~ Acrylic
1
Honorable Mentions ~ Painting
Committee members have such a
wide variety of tastes, we are each
given three votes in order to assure
that at some point we can agree on a
prize winner. This year the vote
came more easily. We all loved
Steve Wilda’s intricate acrylic
rendition of peeling paint and rusty
pot spiced with the brilliance of the
yellow lemons.
1. Roberta Wilson ~ Meghan ~ Oil
2. Kara Bigda ~ American Summer ~ Water Color
3. Christina Mastrangelo ~ Roses ~ Oil
4. Elizabeth Rhoades ~ Reflections On a Mud
Pond ~ Pastel
Emerging Artist Award
Honorable Mention
Rebecca Carney - Meg
2nd Prize ~ Photography
Jean Stabell ~ The Birch
One hundred people could have
walked by this tree fallen in the
water, but only an artist's eye
would capture the scene so
uniquely. Juror Denise Riggs said,
“I was draw to this image because
of it's abstractness. It's not immediately obvious what is happening
compositionally — am I looking
towards the sky? At a reflection?
There's a need for viewer participation and the focused and unfocused areas work well adding to
the image's interest.”
Rebecca’s expressive, intense portrait of
her daughter uses color and line in a
masterful way to capture her personality.

Deborah Jane Slavitt ~
Miss Quiss ~ Fabric Art

David Corsini
Tower of Flowers
Metal & Glass Assemblage
Above: Maggie Hodges ~ Sisters
~ Oil • Right: Barbara Groff
Glazed With Light ~ Pastel
Doug’s work is outstanding in his category. The
two winning drawings were each excellent
technically and compositionally, both strong
and beautiful! Jurors admired the silverpoint
medium and gave the drawing of the tree a top
award for its substantial composition and well
developed execution. They admired the concept
and technique of the clarinet, as well as the
beautifully drawn hands.
William Simons
The Curse is
Broken!
Imagine That!
Corrugated
Cardboard
The Shepherd Family Award
Honorable Mention
Painting
Doug Gillette
Uncle Ralph’s Clarinet
Graphite
1st Prize Drawing
Christina Mastrangelo ~ Alexandra in Profile ~ Oil
Selected by Steve Lowell, President, Monson Savings Bank
Christina Mastrangelo ~ Alexandra in Profile ~ Oil
2nd Prize Drawing
Barbara Shepherd and Bob Price of Monson underwrite this award, which is selected by Barbara. Barbara said, "I was
drawn to this piece for its brightness and
airy qualities. This is an accessible sculpture. It gives me the feeling of being in a
garden, and I can imagine a place for it in
my own garden, where I would feel the
smile of a warm sunny day."
Honorable Mention ~ 3-D
Art Scholz ~ Hardware Man
Metal & Wood
Jurors awarded these pieces for their
whimsical and joyful qualities.
First Place went to Bill Simons for
his imaginative use of his medium to
create a work of art. They also loved
the texture and personality of Miss
Quiss. Hardware Man also seemed to
reflect our theme so perfectly and a
technically amazing metal creation.
As juror, Sue Katz, said, “All three
sculptures appealed to me for their
sense of whimsy and intriguing techniques: they are just plain fun!”
