LACP News
At its May 11 meeting, the Ladies Auxiliary
to California Pioneers (LACP) will celebrate
Hat Day to honor Constance Miller, a long-time
LACP member who was known for always
wearing a hat. All members and guests are
encouraged to wear a hat to the May meeting.
The election of officers will be held and the
scheduled guest speaker is Alaina Young.
Young will present her findings on Victorian
mourning practices.
At the June 1 meeting and potluck luncheon,
newly elected officers will be installed for 20162017.
As pioneer forebears formed the auxiliary
in June of 1892, the LACP celebrates 124 years
as an auxiliary in June. LACP welcomes as
members women who are descendants of
pioneers who came to California before the
end of 1854. Guests are welcome to attend
the monthly LACP presentations. Contact
president Patricia Hose at (209) 462-3278 one
week prior if you plan to attend.

The first stop on this trip will be a visit to the Rosie the
Riveter World War II Home Front. This is a National Historical
Park located in Richmond. The park preserves and interprets
the legacy of the United States home front during World War
II; including the Kaiser Richmond Shipyards, the Victory
ship Red Oak Victory, a tank factory, housing developments
and other facilities built to support America’s entry into
World War II. In particular, the role of women and African
Americans in war industries is explored and honored.
The final destination will be a visit to the Oakland
Museum of California where lunch is available at the Blue
Oak Café. The featured exhibit at this stop is Altered State:
Marijuana in California. The Oakland Museum is the first
museum to showcase an exhibition about the policies and
social issues surrounding marijuana in California today.
There will be time to explore the rest of the Museum’s three
stories including an exhibit about the impact of bees and tiny
insects. The permanent Gallery of California History is also
well worth a visit.
For additional information, contact tour escort Pam Arana
at 209-951-2498 or 209-601-2172. For reservations contact

Artifacts on the Move
Core Collection Enhancement Project Update
As part of repurposing the Pioneer Room from a
history gallery to an art gallery, it was necessary to relocate
a number of large historic artifacts to several of our other
galleries. Five of these items are now on view in the Holt
Memorial Hall and two are currently part of the Vehicle
Gallery displays.
The new “residents” of the Holt Hall relate to Stockton’s
storied manufacturing, agricultural and transportation
heritage. They include a Globe Iron Works’ Truax automatic
ore car, an H.C. Shaw sulky gang plow, Tillie Lewis’ copper
vacuum cooker that once rendered tomato juice into tomato
paste, a centrifugal irrigation pump made by the Sterling
Pump Corporation, and a mooring cleat from the early days
of the Port of Stockton.
The Vehicle Gallery, whose displays examine
Stockton’s firefighting heritage, now includes the
clockwork mechanism and bell from the first San Joaquin
County courthouse (1854-1888). For decades the town
clock and bell kept Stocktonians aware of the passing hours
and the bell summoned the city’s volunteer fire companies
into service. This building was razed to make way for the
second courthouse (1890-1961) and the clock and bell were
moved to a tower atop the Hunter Street Fire Station. When
that tower was condemned in 1933, the bell and clockworks
were donated to the Haggin.
On your next visit, be sure to include stops in the Holt
Hall and Vehicle Gallery to view some old friends in their
new homes.

COLLECTION NEWS
Haggin Collection Items on Loan to
Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan
The Haggin Museum’s art
collection is once again receiving
national attention as some of our
paintings are heading to Washington
D.C. We were recently approached
by the office of the Honorable Paul
Ryan, Speaker of the House of
Representatives, requesting that we
loan a painting for his office. The
Speaker was particularly interested
in borrowing a painting by Albert
Bierstadt because his work highlights some of the beautiful
landscapes of our country.
With our current project of reimagining our art collection
underway, we were unsure if we would be able to meet the
request. However, after providing the Speaker’s office with an
inventory of paintings that were available for a multi-year loan,
Speaker Ryan and his wife requested five paintings. We are
honored to be loaning the following works: In the Yosemite Valley
by Albert Bierstadt; Cloud Effect, Estes Park, Colorado by Albert
Bierstadt; Stagecoach by Edward Lampson Henry; Untitled by
William Hart; and Kneedeep in Summer by William Hart.
This is not the first request of this type for the Haggin. During
his first term as President of the United States, Ronald Reagan
requested Looking Up the Yosemite Valley by Albert Bierstadt,
which was displayed in the White House Roosevelt Room. The
painting reminded him of his home state of California.

photographs, sculptures, collages, mixed-media pieces
and digital short films.
This year's exhibition judge is Ruth Santee, an
Oakland-based artist and tenured professor at San Joaquin
Delta College. Santee is also the director and co-owner of
Transmission Gallery, a contemporary gallery located in

You won’t want to miss this exciting adventure to
the High Hand Conservatory in Loomis, California! The
Loomis Fruit Growers Association has been in continuous
operation since 1901. The oldest part of the historic High
Hand fruit sheds packing plant, built in 1926, now houses
various artisan vendors. The timeless principles of handmade craftsmanship and value are reflected throughout
the historic building.
Taste locally crafted wines, olive oils and vinegars
and visit the art gallery which houses work by local
leading painters, sculptors, ceramicists and glass jewelry
makers. Additionally, the site houses a Persian rug gallery,
Gladding McBean pottery, and The Tin Thimble, which
specializes in creative sewing and fiber arts. There is a
fashion boutique, and one-of-a-kind hand-made gifts, and
furnishings for home and garden. The Vintage Bricoleur
has a unique selection of antiques and collectibles. Across
the street and within two blocks in either direction
there are at least five more antique shops. The nursery
covers several acres with walking paths among specimen
trees, shrubs, succulents, topiary, statuary and pottery.
Check out the High Hand website for more details at
highhand.com.
Enjoy a brown bag lunch in the garden or visit the
the High Hand Café which specializes in farm fresh local
ingredients. There will be plenty of time for shopping,
meandering through the gardens or antiquing by foot as
the tour bus will stay parked in the same location from
10:30 to 3:30 p.m.
For more information contact tour leader Dot
Robinson at (209) 957-5427 or [email protected]. For
reservations contact administrative assistant Merylene
Marengo at (209) 940-6311. The last day to cancel and still
receive a refund is April 29. OLLI and SICL members are
invited to travel at the same cost as museum members.
Join the Department of Museum Travel for an
exciting day in Sacramento. The day begins with a stop at
the Crocker Art Museum to see the temporary exhibition
Andy Warhol: Portraits. This exhibit is organized by The
Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and
it includes a broad sampling of Warhol’s self-portraits,
and portraits of the diverse 20th-century iconic figures
who eagerly sat for him. In addition to the Andy Warhol
exhibit, tour members will have the opportunity to
view the Crocker Art Museum’s many other permanent
collections and exhibitions.
The group will reconvene around noon with a stop
in Old Sacramento for lunch and a little shopping, if time
permits. The final stop will be at the Leland Stanford
Mansion which has recently completed extensive
restoration and rehabilitation and serves as the official
state reception center for government use. You won’t want
to miss this stunning example of California splendor and
elegance in the Victorian era!
