57th Annual Choir Conference of the
Federation of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians — Metropolis of Chicago
October 10-12, 2014 — St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, St. Louis, MO
May 5, 2014
Warm greetings to our fellow church musicians!
St. Nicholas Church is honored and excited to host the 2014 annual conference of our Federation. We are pleased
that the Federation awarded this year’s conference to us. We are working diligently to make this a very special event both
for our parish and for all of you, OUR ESTEEMED GUESTS!
To that end we have lined up unique and fun-filled events each evening. Join us Thursday evening for
preregistration and hospitality at the hotel. Friday evening we will wine you and dine you. … Greek and American
dancing?....of course! Saturday afternoon includes a workshop you will find most intriguing. You will have lots of fun
Saturday evening as well!
But you know the weekend can’t be all fun and games … We will have plenty of rehearsal time to learn
Christopher Kypros’ Liturgy of Hope arrangement of the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. We will be singing under
Chris’s artistic and spiritually uplifting direction, and our very own Michael Doran will accompany us on the organ. What a
memorable liturgy this promises to be!
For your comfort and convenience, events will be held at our church facility with the exception of Friday dinner.
Round-trip shuttle service from church to our Family Life Center for Friday dinner will be available. The elevator in the
church complex makes navigating from one level to another seamless for those of us who don’t get around quite as well as
we used to. You will enjoy staying at the Parkway Hotel, located just one block east of our church. The hotel is offering us
premium rooms at a special flat rate of $ 114.77 per night ($99.00 + tax), complimentary hot breakfast included. Located in
the chic Central West End neighborhood of St. Louis and adjacent to our renowned Forest Park, featuring our world-famous
(and free!) zoo and prestigious art museum, both our church and the hotel are only steps away from restaurants, shopping,
and nightlife along pedestrian-friendly streets!
So … have we enticed you enough to join us for the 2014 conference? We hope we have! Enclosed, you will find
all of the information and forms needed to complete your registration process. Also, all of the forms are available in fillable
PDF format under the “Annual Conference” tab at the Federation’s website (www.chicago.churchmusic.goarch.org/). Just
fill out and save your forms on your computer, e-mail the completed forms to me, and make your secure payments online
by credit card using the link under the conference tab. Please do not delay in getting your packet to us or making your
hotel reservations. Please share this information with your choir and other interested parties. For those of you that may
not currently have an active choir, this is the perfect opportunity to meet with musicians and federation board members
willing to provide help and encouragement to new choirs , not to mention ideas for revitalizing existing ones. In any event,
we hope the conference we have crafted for you has kindled enough excitement to prompt record attendance.
We can’t wait to see you all in October!
Sincerely,
Denise Karras

University of Missouri-St. Louis. The son of an
Orthodox priest, he came from Greece as an infant
for his father’s mission. He received his BFA at
Washington University in St. Louis and was the
valedictorian of the School of Fine Arts at
graduation.
Dr. Valerie Karras is a scholar of early and
Byzantine Christianity with a a Master of
Theological Studies degree from Holy Cross Greek
Orthodox School of Theology, a Th.D. in patristic
theology from the Aristotelian University of
Thessaloniki, and a Ph.D. in church history from
The Catholic University of America. She has spent
