Udaleku comes back to San Francisco from June 20th - July 3rd, 2011. For Udaleku to be successful, we need your help. We are looking for volunteers to help with coordinating, housing, and transportation. If you are interested, please contact Valerie Arrechea at 415-859-1154 ([email protected]) or Lisa Etchepare ([email protected]) All volunteers are welcome, from those who can house a few children, to those who can help serve during dinner. V O LU M E 3 0 ISSU E 3 GU R E E U SK AL E TX E A P AGE 4 The BCC organized a Korrika and got together in Golden Gate Park on Saturday, April 16, 2011. There were approximately 50 people old and young, from here and from Euskal Herria (studying, working or on extended vacation). It was a really great ambiance and everyone was happy to participate remotely in korrika. Lots of euskara was heard and celebrated! The participants ran a lap around the park grounds with a bicyclist leading the pack. He had music attached to his bike, so the crowd shouted 'tipi tapa! tipi tapa! Korrika!' while listening to Gose . Afterwards, Juan San Mames prepared an incredible paella for everyone to enjoy. To see more pictures please check www.SFBCC.us, click “Programs & Activities”, then click “Korrika”or check out the photo display cabinet in the BCC lobby. Herri Urrats 2011 Following the biennial Korrika last month, which is a fundraiser for adult education in euskara, the annual event around the lake in Senpere (Lapurdi), Herri Urrats, is slated for May 8th, and will raise funds for the ikastolas (Basque immersion schools) in Iparralde (Northern Basque Country). To promote the event the premiere Basque Rock band, Berri Txarrak, will be the headline act and were enlisted to produce the theme song (Laku Bat Mundua), written by Bertsolari super-star Sustrai Colina (Urruña, Lapurdi). You can check it out at the bottom of the BCC website (www.SFBCC.us) and the lyrics are presented here with an English translation. Berri Txarrak will be returning to California this summer for the first time since their show here in 2005 to produce their next CD. LAKU BAT MUNDUAN ONE LAKE IN THE WORLD Nor garen ez dakite baina nor gara gu, nortasun agirian gezur bat daukagu. Folklore kulturaren, gasna ta piperraren inperioan bufoi gabiltz. Zer litzake mundua lau-buru bat balitz? They don’t know who we are, but who we are… there is a lie on your ID In the empire of cheese, peppers and folklore we look like clowns. What would the world be if it were a Basque cross? Ezin geldirik egon postaletarako, zaratatsuegiak museotarako... Ardi beltz zaurituak, labelez zurituak, ez gara diruz bazkatzen. Ez dugu izateko baimenik eskatzen. Laku bat munduan amets egiteko Mundu bat lakuan itsaso izateko. We can’t stand still to be in postcards, we are too noisy to be in museums… The wounded black sheep, is being whitened with a quality label, but you can’t buy us with money. We are not asking permission to exist. One lake in the world to dream a world in the lake to exist. Lyrics by Sustrai Colina Translated by Aitor Iñarra
