2015 Annual Report
By the Numbers
The Women’s Centre gathers feedback from women who use the Centre, volunteers, community
members, board members, and staff to inform our work. Feedback was collected throughout the
year using a variety of tools. In 2015, we collected input from 1,553 women.
Here are some of our indicators of success:
• 97% of women reported feeling safe at the Women’s Centre
• 88% of women reported feeling at home or a sense of belonging
• 86% of women reported receiving the support they needed when they needed it
• 80% of women reported increasing their community involvement
• 75% of women reported they knew more about women’s issues
In 2015, we responded to 87,052 contacts from women. 64% were made in person and 36% by phone and email.
That averages to 238 in person contacts and 135 phone calls a day. That is up 32% from 2014.
In 2015, we were a diverse community of women:
31% were Aboriginal, First Nations, Inuit or Métis
21% were immigrants or refugees
12% were visible minorities
5% were lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer
Many of us experienced the following challenges:
45% were dealing with poverty
29% had a chronic health issue such as mental health, disability, or chronic disease
29% were single mothers
25% were in a violent relationship, or had been previously

Communities Supporting Women
he Women’s Centre
has had a busy year of
growth, new programs, and
reconnecting with our goals.
The Centre is a space
where women can
get engaged in their
communities in ways that
match their interests and
skills. Women with different
capabilities can get to know
each other, work together,
and learn from each other.
Recently, we’ve heard
more stories from women
affected by the economic
downturn. Those who were
working in oil and gas and
let go last year are running
out of savings, while many
low-income women in
connected fields (cleaning,
laundry) are seeing their
contracts cut. Women are
looking for resources and
many are trying to find
more opportunities to be
involved in their community.
This is reflected in the
number of women we see
at the Centre.
While a woman may first
visit to get her taxes done
or a new ID card, she can
then learn about workshops
and events in the coming
weeks. She may hear about
a child care roundtable or
discussion group about
women and poverty. She
may sit down at a computer
and take a few minutes to
connect with old friends
online. Community is
strengthened by recognizing
that all women have
valuable experiences and
skills to contribute.
The Centre works in
three strategic areas: Get
Assistance, Connect With
Others, and Work for
Change. The most engaging
stories come from when
these areas intersect.

In a survey of over 700
workshop attendees, 89%
said they had met someone
new or connected with a
friend.
Get Assistance is what
brings many women
through the doors the
first time. Emergency
food packages, bottles of
shampoo, people to talk
to and legal advice clinics
are available to address
women’s basic needs.
Volunteers provided direct
assistance 14,585 times,
which is up 43% from 2014.
Referrals to the Calgary
Interfaith Food Bank,
Interfaith Furniture, Sleep
Country, Dress for Success
and other programs totalled
5,118 in 2015. Overall, we
spent 10,262 hours on Get
Assistance programs.
Work for Change has seen
some new developments
over the last year. The
Girl Power program
expanded from a series of
summer camps to a new
spring break camp and
an after school program.
Women’s Centre staff
and volunteers met with
several Calgary MLAs
about issues important to
women in our community.
City Councillors, MLAs
and representatives from
the Status of Women have
attended various events
at the Women’s Centre
this year. Social Issues
Committee volunteers
started a monthly issuesfocused discussion series.
Connect With Others is
where we shift focus to
learning new skills and
socializing with others.
Combatting isolation
through workshops and
groups like knitting, yoga,
practice English and
financial literacy has led to

workshops, and to provide
