NEW SCULPTURES A new sculpture, Myriad by artist David Rickard and architect Germano Di Chello, has been installed on the Henry Moore Lawn. Myriad holds an array of mirrors high above visitors’ heads, bringing views over the surrounding landscape down to earth. The project, which is supported by the Coastal Communities Fund, aims to attract more families with children to the Snape Maltings site, offering a new way of viewing the stunning landscape of the Alde estuary. Meanwhile we have installed another Henry Moore sculpture, Reclining Figure: Bunched (1961/69), on loan from the Henry Moore Foundation, to replace Moore’s Large Interior Form, which is now on tour. 2 DISCOVER ALDEBURGH MUSIC Inspired by Benjamin Britten’s pioneering interests in the development of young artists and community participation, Aldeburgh Music today is an international performance centre whose creative engine is its year-round artist development, education and community work. Jerwood Kiln Studio, Snape 6pm Tickets £6 9 10 Saturday 1 October 10.30am – 5.15pm 10.30am Viola Tunnard: A Centenary Celebration Bethan Langford mezzo soprano Adam Sullivan tenor, Lana Bode piano Pianist Viola Tunnard’s career was distinguished by exceptional musicianship and astonishing versatility. Accompanist and repetiteur, she was also a sensitive chamber musician, arranger and music assistant for many of Britten’s Aldeburgh Festival projects. Her contribution to musical life here was enormous. It continues through the Viola Tunnard Trust; this day of activity launches a new scheme of bursaries for Viola Tunnard Scholars participating in the Britten–Pears Young Artist Programme and year-long support at Aldeburgh for a single exceptional pianist – the Viola Tunnard Young Artist. Emerging singers and pianists under the guidance of Roger Vignoles create a day to remember a remarkable musician and support a new generation of young performers. Britten Studio, Snape 10.30am, 2.30pm, 4pm Tickets £20 for all three events Under 27s half-price Masterclass with Roger Vignoles Britten Studio, Snape 10.30am (ends approx. 1pm) 2.30pm Viola Tunnard Remembered An informal discussion on Viola’s musical life with colleagues including Roger Vignoles, hosted by Roger Wright Britten Studio, Snape 2.30pm (ends approx. 3.15pm) 4pm Clearings in the Sky Bethan Langford mezzo soprano Adam Sullivan tenor, Lana Bode piano Marcelle de Manziarly Trois Fables de la Fontaine 5’ Lili Boulanger Clairieres dans le ciel.36’ and songs by Cécile Chaminade The inaugural recipient of the Viola Tunnard Young Artist Award Lana Bode creates a programme of French song, repertoire close to Tunnard’s heart. That it is all written by female composers who were her nearcontemporaries would surely have met with her approval. Some of Chaminade’s instrumental music and song has established itself, but the real discovery here may be Lili Boulanger, younger sister of the noted composer-teacher Nadia. Lili died in 1918 aged only 24 and her vividly original settings of Symbolist poetry leaves us not only with an ambitious accomplished French song cycle but also a tantalising glimpse into what may have been. And if you are a songwriter, you can also take part in a practical songwriting workshop earlier in the day. BBC Introducing in Suffolk launched on air in 2009, and has since featured hundreds of emerging artists. The aim of the show is to give an outlet for the musicians who are otherwise overlooked, and to celebrate the local music scene. Success stories include Ed Sheeran and DELS, while other acts have gone on to perform at festivals including Glastonbury, Latitude, Reading and Leeds. The show is broadcast on BBC Radio Suffolk, 8–9pm on Saturdays. BBC Introducing in Suffolk will select a number of exciting up and coming acts to perform at Snape. For line-up updates visit www.aldeburgh.co.uk. MOBO-nominated cellist and singersongwriter Ayanna Witter-Johnson has quickly emerged as an exciting voice, blending folk and soul. As an Open Space artist at Aldeburgh Music, she wrote and produced her third EP on the Suffolk coast, culminating in supporting Gabrielle at the Snape Proms. At Suffolk Songfest Ayanna brings her trio for a soulful and uplifting set. ‘The pressure at the top end of music today means that unless you can master your instrument, sing like an angel and write your own work you’re going to find it hard to reach the top! Ayanna is all these things and more and I’m her biggest fan!’ Gilles Peterson After building an established career in the classical world and two critically acclaimed EPs, composer Anna Meredith released her much-anticipated debut album Varmints on Moshi Moshi Records in March 2016. There’s been an incredible critical response with 4 and 5 star reviews across the board from The Wire, Sunday Times, Uncut, Q Magazine and the coveted Best New Music on Pitchfork. Aldeburgh Music has supported Meredith’s work for many years and much of the album was developed at Snape over a series of residencies. ‘One of the most innovative minds in modern British music…Varmints is a knockout, the kind that makes you see cartoon stars.’ Pitchfork For updated information on the evening line-up, visit www.aldeburgh.co.uk Britten Studio, Snape 5 – 11pm Tickets £15 Under 27s £10 Songwriting workshop with Ayanna Witter-Johnson Jerwood Kiln Studio, Snape 10am Tickets £12 Places are very limited and must be booked in advance. 13 Friday 21 – Sunday 23 October BRITTEN DANCES A Britten Weekend While Britten wrote just one ballet score, his music has inspired some of the world’s leading choreographers – none more so than Richard Alston, whose rich body of work features Britten as a recurring theme. ‘I discovered Britten’s music very young’, says Alston. ‘There is something very direct, pared-down and extraordinary about it. It reaches people.’ Richard Alston Dance Company and an enviable line-up of musicians provide the centrepiece of the 2016 Britten Weekend, including the world premiere of a brand new work and revivals of pieces made over an illustrious career. By contrast Joseph Toonga approaches Britten’s music from a background in urban dance and hip hop, an exciting fresh addition to the roster of Britten Dances. In addition to the dance performances, there is a Study Morning offering insights into the choreographer’s world and Britten Sinfonia, Leonard Elschenbroich, Pekka Kuusisto and Aldeburgh Voices perform more music by Britten alongside Bridge and Tavener. Britten Dances is presented by Aldeburgh Music and DanceEast Friday 21 October 7.30pm Britten Dances: Richard Alston Dance Company Richard Alston Dance Company Richard Alston choreographer Mark Padmore tenor Allison Cook mezzo soprano Andrew West piano Britten Sinfonia Pekka Kuusisto director Aldeburgh Voices Britten Rejoice in the Lamb 16’; Sechs Holderlin Fragmente 10’; Phaedra 15’; Les Illuminations 25’ Purcell arr. Britten Chacony 7’ (world premiere choreography) Aldeburgh Music and DanceEast present a compelling combination of Benjamin Britten’s music with choreography by Richard Alston, one of the most influential figures in dance, internationally recognised for his instinctive musicality. The programme features the world premiere of Alston’s choreography to Britten’s string orchestra arrangement of his beloved Henry Purcell’s Chacony. Britten Sinfonia, Pekka Kuusisto and Allison Cook resume their acclaimed collaboration with Richard Alston Dance Company, performing on-stage with one of the world’s leading tenors, Mark Padmore, Aldeburgh Voices and Andrew West. The taut drama of Phaedra (nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production), contrasts with his succinctly intimate Holderlin Fragments (‘choreography that dazzles’ – The Stage). Rejoice in the Lamb ‘matches the charm of the music and whimsy of the text, and suggests the filtering, imagistic quality of Smart’s imagination’ – The New York Times. And the sheer exhilaration of Les Illuminations takes wild imagery from the life of French poet Arthur Rimbaud and lifts it to the heights in Britten’s inspired setting. ‘If you were going to ask any choreographer to mark the Britten centenary, Richard Alston would be top of your list. For decades he has proved the most musical of our dancemakers and the one most attuned to the sensitivity and integrity of his chosen scores.’ The Times Snape 7.30pm (ends approx. 9.45pm including two intervals) Tickets £30, £26, £22, £18, £13 Under 27s half price Restaurant open Pre-performance talk with Richard Alston and Roger Wright Britten Studio, Snape 6.30pm Tickets Free but please book Marianna Krempeniou, Nancy Nerantzi and Elly Braund in Richard Alston’s Rejoice in the Lamb. Saturday 22 October 10am 15 Dancing Britten: A Study Morning Lucy Walker presenter with Richard Alston and others There is clearly something about Britten’s music that has attracted choreographers over the years. Even in his lifetime his scores were seized upon by dance companies, perhaps because of their rhythmic vitality and quicksilver changes of mood and tone. In a lively morning of discussion we will explore this attraction with speakers including the choreographer Richard Alston and other leading experts in the field of dance, watch examples of previously choreographed Britten works, and understand what makes Britten’s music so good to dance to. Britten Studio, Snape 10am – 1pm Tickets £12 Under 27s half price Photo: Pari Naderi 14 16 Orford Church 1pm & 4pm Britten Dances: Joseph Toonga Joseph Toonga choreographer Leonard Elschenbroich cello Bach Suite No.1 Kevin Volans Short Walk in the Garden of Solitude 7’ Lutoslawski Sacher Variation 4’ Britten Suite No.1 22’ An afternoon of ground-breaking dance and live music in the spectacular location of Orford Church. Charismatic, rising star cellist Leonard Elschenbroich performs Bach, Volans, Lutoslawki and Britten. Performing alongside Elsenbroich will be a group of dynamic dancers choreographed by Joseph Toonga, an award-winning, emerging dance-maker, working in a contemporary and Hip Hop fusion style, and one of only a small number of guest choreographers to have been invited by Richard Alston to make work for his company. Britten and Tavener wrote brilliantly for it, exploiting the richness of tone and expressive extremes in music both solemn and celebratory. The quirky exuberance of Britten’s sonata seems to reflect the whimsical inspiration of his choral cantata, whilst Tavener takes us to darker emotional territory. Taverner’s exquisite miniature The Lamb, which has become one of the most popular choral works in the repetoire, leads us toward Svyati, a spiritual rhapsody where the cello’s lyrical lines soar over voices intoning words from the Russian Orthodox funeral service – a yearning, achingly beautiful stasis both profound and uplifting. Britten Studio, Snape 1pm (ends approx. 2.10pm) Tickets £16, £13 Under 27s half price Sunday 23 October 4pm Britten Sinfonia Pekka Kuusisto director/viola Bridge Three Idylls 12’ Britten Prelude & Fugue 9’; Lachrymae 15’; Variations on a theme of Frank Bridge 25’ The brilliance and bravura of Britten’s writing for string orchestra is nowhere better illustrated than in Pekka Kuusisto’s programme of extremes. Light and shade, wit and invention, rigour and reflection abound, from the Bachian vitality of the little-known Prelude and Fugue to the sparkling variants Britten conjures from his teacher’s modest but curious melody. Variations of a different kind as Kuusisto himself takes the solo viola role for the John Dowland-inspired fantasy Lachrymae, a compelling ‘slow-reveal’ of a 17th-century lute song concealed by the mysterious, dark-hued transformations that precede it. This performance by the distinguished American visitors the Fine Arts Quartet is an apt conclusion to a concert featuring other music dear to Pleeth – part of Beethoven’s peerless sonata cycle – and a work by 19thcentury cellist-composer David Popper that includes members of Pleeth’s family, professional cellists both. Cavalli’s La Calisto irreverently charts the relations between gods, men and women in a rich and heady score. Internationallyacclaimed countertenor Lawrence Zazzo explores this rarely-performed work with an outstanding team of singers and instrumentalists from the Royal College of Music in a short Aldeburgh Residency, culminating in a 90-minute workshop performance of extracts of this enchanting and fascinating masterpiece. Mark-Anthony Turnage has won over fans from a wide range of the musical genres with his idiosyncratic style inspired above all by jazz and the rhythmic modernism of Stravinsky. His concerto for percussion and orchestra is given its second performance by Colin Currie, hailed by The Telegraph as ‘among the top handful of percussionists in the world’. It is paired with two mythic works commissioned for the Ballet Russes in 1909–1913: the second suite of music from Ravel’s seductive, opulent ballet, and Stravinsky’s powerful, rhythm-led Rite. Bach’s serene chorale prelude is said to have been written contemplating his own death and is his last numbered work whilst Beethoven’s monumental late quartet is dominated by one of his most sublime and spacious slow movements, one the composer himself described as a hymn of gratitude to the Almighty. Glass’s quartet moves toward a gently ruminative conclusion, as stark and insistent gestures soften and coalesce into heartfelt melody. Orford Church 12 noon Tickets £13, £10, £5 Bach St John Passion 115’ Written in 1724 for the Good Friday service at Leipzig’s Nikolaikirche, Bach’s St John Passion was by far the most dramatic, rich and complex musical interpretation of the passion story the Leipzig audience – indeed, any audience anywhere – had experienced. The baroque collective Solomon’s Knot, one of the exciting ensembles supported by Aldeburgh Music’s Open Space programme, has quickly achieved acclaim for the vitality and invention of its chamber performances, of the great baroque oratorios. Making full use of the freedom enabled by singing without scores, they breathe freshness and new drama into one of Bach’s great large-scale masterpieces. ‘Solomon’s Knot…known as much for vigour and risk-taking as for historical authenticity and intelligent programming.’ The Financial Times Snape 7.30pm (ends approx. 9.30pm) Tickets £24, £21, £18, £14, £10 Under 27s half price Restaurant open Open Space at Aldeburgh Music is generously supported by Saturday 15 April 12 noon Eo Nomine A meditation on the crucifixion by Bach’s musical forbear Buxtehude Membra Jesu nostri 65’ Hearing Buxtehude’s cycle of sacred cantatas, we can only imagine the effect his music had on Bach. Ingeniously structured and finely attuned to the poetry, allegory and imagery of his biblical texts these contemplation of Christ’s body on the cross seems to contain the essence of the great Bach passions yet to come. Above all it is the vibrant immediacy of the music that draws us in – the richly sensual harmonies, its mix of florid rhetoric and intimate reflection has a cumulative power that overwhelms us still.
