NEW AT
SNAPE
MALTINGS
Aldeburgh Music purchased Snape
Maltings in 2015, thanks to the
extraordinary support of Arts Council
England. While further plans will be
announced in June 2017, you can already
see new developments on the site:
NEW SNAPE MALTINGS VISITOR CENTRE
Based in the outer foyer of Snape Maltings Concert Hall,
our new Visitor Centre has information on all aspects of
the site – from what’s on and where to eat, to walks and
wildlife and public transport timetables.
1
NEW CONCERT HALL CAFÉ
We have opened a new Concert Hall Café, replacing the
Oyster Bar and Kitchen. Open until the end of concerts on
concert nights, it will also be open every day through the
summer until the start of October (Monday – Saturday
10am–5.30pm, Sunday 10am–4.30pm). The Concert
Hall Café serves tea, coffee and pastries, a lunch menu
with an emphasis on fresh, healthy salads and a brunch
menu at weekends. The Concert Hall Café also serves hot
and cold pre-concert meals from two hours before the
start of evening performances. Visit www.aldeburgh.co.uk
to find out autumn, winter and spring opening times.
NEW SCULPTURES
A new sculpture, Myriad by artist David Rickard and architect
Germano Di Chello, has been installed on the Henry Moore
Lawn. Myriad holds an array of mirrors high above visitors’
heads, bringing views over the surrounding landscape
down to earth. The project, which is supported by the
Coastal Communities Fund, aims to attract more families
with children to the Snape Maltings site, offering a new
way of viewing the stunning landscape of the Alde estuary.
Meanwhile we have installed another Henry Moore
sculpture, Reclining Figure: Bunched (1961/69), on loan
from the Henry Moore Foundation, to replace Moore’s
Large Interior Form, which is now on tour.

String quartets from the Britten–Pears
Young Artist Programme
Presented by
Suffolk Music Education Hub
Together with a team of leading chamber
musicians, young quartets will spend
an intensive study period exploring
Bartók’s String Quartets – six
masterpieces which articulate the divide
between romanticism and modernism.
Quartets will be encouraged to explore
the historic roots and context of these
great works with internationally
recognised folk vocalist Márta
Sebestyén and world music specialist
Simon Broughton. Along with two
members of the Kelemen Quartet,
Broadcaster Rob Cowan will also lead
some of these sessions on the history
of the Bartók quartets on disc.

The English Patient. Márta gives a rare
UK recital alongside her contributions
to a workshop on the Bartók String
Quartets. With her trio of musicians on
violin, bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy, she
sings and performs the music as Bartók
might have heard it. She reveals the
extraordinary beauty and power of the
pure tradition. And also shows that it’s
sometimes hard to know where the
tradition ends and Bartók begins.

Viola Tunnard: A
Centenary Celebration
Bethan Langford mezzo soprano
Adam Sullivan tenor, Lana Bode piano
Pianist Viola Tunnard’s career was
distinguished by exceptional
musicianship and astonishing
versatility. Accompanist and repetiteur,
she was also a sensitive chamber
musician, arranger and music assistant
for many of Britten’s Aldeburgh Festival
projects. Her contribution to musical
life here was enormous. It continues
through the Viola Tunnard Trust; this
day of activity launches a new scheme
of bursaries for Viola Tunnard Scholars
participating in the Britten–Pears
Young Artist Programme and year-long
support at Aldeburgh for a single
exceptional pianist – the Viola Tunnard
Young Artist. Emerging singers and
pianists under the guidance of Roger
Vignoles create a day to remember a
remarkable musician and support a
new generation of young performers.

The inaugural recipient of the Viola

creates a programme of French song,
repertoire close to Tunnard’s heart.
That it is all written by female
composers who were her nearcontemporaries would surely have met
with her approval.
Some of Chaminade’s instrumental
music and song has established itself,
but the real discovery here may be Lili
Boulanger, younger sister of the noted
composer-teacher Nadia. Lili died in
1918 aged only 24 and her vividly
original settings of Symbolist poetry
leaves us not only with an ambitious
accomplished French song cycle but
also a tantalising glimpse into what
may have been.

Suffolk Songfest
Marathon evening of exciting bands and
songwriters
Anna Meredith
Acts selected by BBC Introducing in Suffolk
Ayanna Witter-Johnson
Two of Suffolk’s leading champions of
new musical talent, Aldeburgh Music
and BBC Introducing in Suffolk, present
a Saturday evening marathon of
exciting bands and songwriters.
And if you are a songwriter, you can
also take part in a practical songwriting
workshop earlier in the day.
BBC Introducing in Suffolk launched
on air in 2009, and has since featured
hundreds of emerging artists. The aim
of the show is to give an outlet for the
musicians who are otherwise
overlooked, and to celebrate the local
music scene. Success stories include
Ed Sheeran and DELS, while other acts
have gone on to perform at festivals
including Glastonbury, Latitude,
Reading and Leeds. The show is
broadcast on BBC Radio Suffolk,
8–9pm on Saturdays. BBC Introducing
in Suffolk will select a number of
exciting up and coming acts to perform
at Snape. For line-up updates visit
www.aldeburgh.co.uk.
MOBO-nominated cellist and singersongwriter Ayanna Witter-Johnson has
quickly emerged as an exciting voice,
blending folk and soul. As an Open
Space artist at Aldeburgh Music, she
wrote and produced her third EP on the
Suffolk coast, culminating in
supporting Gabrielle at the Snape
Proms. At Suffolk Songfest Ayanna
brings her trio for a soulful and
uplifting set.
‘The pressure at the top end of music
today means that unless you can master
your instrument, sing like an angel and
write your own work you’re going to find
it hard to reach the top! Ayanna is all
these things and more and I’m her
biggest fan!’ Gilles Peterson
After building an established career in
the classical world and two critically
acclaimed EPs, composer Anna Meredith
released her much-anticipated debut
album Varmints on Moshi Moshi Records
in March 2016. There’s been an
incredible critical response with 4 and
5 star reviews across the board from
The Wire, Sunday Times, Uncut, Q
Magazine and the coveted Best New
Music on Pitchfork. Aldeburgh Music
has supported Meredith’s work for
many years and much of the album
was developed at Snape over a series
of residencies.
‘One of the most innovative minds in
modern British music…Varmints is a
knockout, the kind that makes you see
cartoon stars.’ Pitchfork

BRITTEN
DANCES
A Britten Weekend
While Britten wrote just one ballet score, his
music has inspired some of the world’s leading
choreographers – none more so than Richard
Alston, whose rich body of work features
Britten as a recurring theme.
‘I discovered Britten’s music very young’,
says Alston. ‘There is something very direct,
pared-down and extraordinary about it.
It reaches people.’
Richard Alston Dance Company and an enviable
line-up of musicians provide the centrepiece of
the 2016 Britten Weekend, including the world
premiere of a brand new work and revivals of
pieces made over an illustrious career.
By contrast Joseph Toonga approaches
Britten’s music from a background in urban
dance and hip hop, an exciting fresh addition
to the roster of Britten Dances.
In addition to the dance performances, there
is a Study Morning offering insights into the
choreographer’s world and Britten Sinfonia,
Leonard Elschenbroich, Pekka Kuusisto and
Aldeburgh Voices perform more music by
Britten alongside Bridge and Tavener.

Aldeburgh Music and DanceEast
present a compelling combination of
Benjamin Britten’s music with
choreography by Richard Alston, one of
the most influential figures in dance,
internationally recognised for his
instinctive musicality. The programme
features the world premiere of Alston’s
choreography to Britten’s string
orchestra arrangement of his beloved
Henry Purcell’s Chacony.
Britten Sinfonia, Pekka Kuusisto and
Allison Cook resume their acclaimed
collaboration with Richard Alston
Dance Company, performing on-stage
with one of the world’s leading tenors,
Mark Padmore, Aldeburgh Voices and
Andrew West.
The taut drama of Phaedra (nominated
for an Olivier Award for Best New
Dance Production), contrasts with his
succinctly intimate Holderlin
Fragments (‘choreography that dazzles’
– The Stage). Rejoice in the Lamb
‘matches the charm of the music and
whimsy of the text, and suggests the
filtering, imagistic quality of Smart’s
imagination’ – The New York Times.
And the sheer exhilaration of Les
Illuminations takes wild imagery from
the life of French poet Arthur Rimbaud
and lifts it to the heights in Britten’s
inspired setting.
‘If you were going to ask any
choreographer to mark the Britten
centenary, Richard Alston would be top
of your list. For decades he has proved
the most musical of our dancemakers and
the one most attuned to the sensitivity and
integrity of his chosen scores.’ The Times

Dancing Britten:
A Study Morning
Lucy Walker presenter
with Richard Alston and others
There is clearly something about
Britten’s music that has attracted
choreographers over the years. Even in
his lifetime his scores were seized upon
by dance companies, perhaps because
of their rhythmic vitality and quicksilver
changes of mood and tone. In a lively
morning of discussion we will explore
this attraction with speakers including
the choreographer Richard Alston and
other leading experts in the field of
dance, watch examples of previously
choreographed Britten works, and
understand what makes Britten’s music
so good to dance to.

Britten Rejoice in the Lamb 16’;
Cello Sonata 18’
Tavener Threnos 6’; The Lamb 4’;
Svyati 13’
The cello – perhaps above all
instruments – approaches the quality
of the human voice. Britten and
Tavener wrote brilliantly for it,
exploiting the richness of tone and
expressive extremes in music both
solemn and celebratory.
The quirky exuberance of Britten’s
sonata seems to reflect the whimsical
inspiration of his choral cantata, whilst
Tavener takes us to darker emotional
territory. Taverner’s exquisite miniature
The Lamb, which has become one of
the most popular choral works in the
repetoire, leads us toward Svyati, a
spiritual rhapsody where the cello’s
lyrical lines soar over voices intoning
words from the Russian Orthodox
funeral service – a yearning, achingly
beautiful stasis both profound and
uplifting.

Bridge Three Idylls 12’
Britten Prelude & Fugue 9’; Lachrymae 15’;
Variations on a theme of Frank Bridge 25’
The brilliance and bravura of Britten’s
writing for string orchestra is nowhere
better illustrated than in Pekka Kuusisto’s
programme of extremes. Light and
shade, wit and invention, rigour and
reflection abound, from the Bachian
vitality of the little-known Prelude and
Fugue to the sparkling variants Britten
conjures from his teacher’s modest but
curious melody. Variations of a different
kind as Kuusisto himself takes the solo
viola role for the John Dowland-inspired
fantasy Lachrymae, a compelling
‘slow-reveal’ of a 17th-century lute song
concealed by the mysterious, dark-hued
transformations that precede it.

Britten–Pears Young Artists Programme
A remarkable, intuitive musician,
founder of the Allegri Quartet, William
Pleeth’s lasting influence on the cello
world is incalculable thanks to his prolific
career as teacher and mentor, including
masterclasses at the fledgling Britten–
Pears Young Artist Programme. Amongst
scores of high profile former students
of his cellists Colin Carr, Paul Watkins
and Jacqueline du Pré.

The infatuation of Jove with the lovely

Handel’s preferred version of Acis and

Cannons version most often heard
today, but rather a three-act serenata,
performed in both Italian and English,

Italian choruses, and a cast of largely
Italian opera singers. Internationallyacclaimed countertenor Lawrence
Zazzo explores this rarely-performed
work with an outstanding team of
singers and instrumentalists from the
Royal College of Music in a short
Aldeburgh Residency, culminating in
a 90-minute workshop performance of
extracts of this enchanting and
fascinating masterpiece.

Chamber Music in Residence
For more than 25 years young string
quartets and chamber ensembles have
come to Aldeburgh for a series of
winter and spring residencies. They
study intensively and perform the
results of their work in the Jubilee Hall
to a loyal and enthusiastic audience.
These concerts remain a fixture of our
year and a unique opportunity to hear
chamber music stars of the future
approaching a range of repertoire, from
established masterpieces to less
familiar works, often for the first time.
‘The opportunity to work intensely
without the distractions and pressures of
everyday life was absolutely invaluable.
It gave us the chance to build a rapport
with our listeners and to reimagine works
we’d performed before alongside first
outings of repertoire we studied during
the residency.’

of organised resistance itself, from the
industrial revolution to universal
suffrage and the slave trade, and in

EASTER WEEKEND
AT SNAPE MALTINGS
Our Easter Weekend juxtaposes youthful energy and profound,
contemplative music. Bach’s great St John Passion is given a
dramatic chamber performance by Solomon’s Knot, the Marmen
Quartet play meditative works by Bach, Beethoven and Philip Glass,
while the cobwebs of winter are well and truly blown away by the
power of the Britten–Pears Orchestra under the baton of inspirational
American conductor Marin Alsop. They perform Bartók’s Concerto for
Orchestra and Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, which
is repeated in a family concert on Easter Sunday
Throughout the weekend there will also be a host of family-friendly
activities around the site, including a Farmers’ Market (on Saturday

Three works that allow musical space
for contemplation in that most personal
and intimate means of expression, the
string quartet. Bach’s serene chorale
prelude is said to have been written
contemplating his own death and is his
last numbered work whilst Beethoven’s
monumental late quartet is dominated
by one of his most sublime and
spacious slow movements, one the
composer himself described as a hymn
of gratitude to the Almighty. Glass’s
quartet moves toward a gently
ruminative conclusion, as stark and
insistent gestures soften and coalesce
into heartfelt melody.

Bach St John Passion 115’
Written in 1724 for the Good Friday
service at Leipzig’s Nikolaikirche,
Bach’s St John Passion was by far the
most dramatic, rich and complex
musical interpretation of the passion
story the Leipzig audience – indeed,
any audience anywhere – had
experienced.
The baroque collective Solomon’s Knot,
one of the exciting ensembles
supported by Aldeburgh Music’s Open
Space programme, has quickly
achieved acclaim for the vitality and
invention of its chamber performances,
of the great baroque oratorios. Making
full use of the freedom enabled by
singing without scores, they breathe

Eo Nomine
A meditation on the crucifixion by
Bach’s musical forbear
Buxtehude Membra Jesu nostri 65’
Hearing Buxtehude’s cycle of sacred
cantatas, we can only imagine the effect
his music had on Bach. Ingeniously
structured and finely attuned to the
poetry, allegory and imagery of his
biblical texts these contemplation of
Christ’s body on the cross seems to
contain the essence of the great Bach
passions yet to come. Above all it is the
vibrant immediacy of the music that
draws us in – the richly sensual
harmonies, its mix of florid rhetoric and
intimate reflection has a cumulative
power that overwhelms us still.
Vocal consort Eo Nomine are one of the
brightest recent additions to the British
early music scene and the latest
ensemble on Aldeburgh Music’s Open
Space scheme.

Aldeburgh Voices
Alexander Chaplin conductor
Vaughan Williams Valiant-for-truth 5’;
Mass in G minor 26’
Poulenc Salve Regina 5’
Martin Mass for double choir 28’
Blythburgh’s simple, lofty grandeur is
the perfect setting for some of the most
beautiful sacred music from the early
20th century in a programme where the
spirit of ancient plainchant and
polyphony seems embellished and
re-imagined. In Vaughan Williams’
mass for two choirs, the intricate
interlocking vocal parts and modal
harmonies of English Tudor music are
channelled into a work of serenity and
grace, whilst Frank Martin’s mass,
largely completed in the same year,
uses the spatial separation and richly
layered textures of his voices to
ravishing effect.

The partnership of the Britten–Pears
Orchestra’s brilliant young musicians
from around the world and one of the
world’s most inspiring interpreters of
orchestral music is an exciting
prospect. New York-born conductor
Marin Alsop has a remarkable ability to
get the best out of people, from the
world’s leading professionals to the
urban youth of Baltimore and
outstanding young female conductors.
Together Alsop and the BPO perform
two of the 20th century’s most popular
works – Britten’s great showpiece and
Bartók’s synthesis of East European
folk melody and rich orchestral
textures, a nostalgic love letter to his
homeland.
